• accessing files on a shared folder via IIS

  Im not sure if this suits stackexchange, serverfault or here... so i'll go with here for a start. I'm having issues setting up a network share to be accessed by IIS, all I need to do is read/write files on the Other server. We have 2 servers set up (Both 2008 R2 & IIS 7.5), one is the WEB server, which is externally accessible and NOT part of the domain. We also have an Intranet server which has no internet connectivity and is part of the domain. These 2 servers can talk to each other happily, I have the SQL server on the WEB server shared across to the intranet server so that the web content is editable from the intranet. I can share a folder on the web server (say, wwwroot/Images/) and connect to it from the intranet server, even have it as a mapped drive (but i know thats not going to work for IIS to access it), So there seems not to be a connectivity issue. I can also set up a Virtual folder in IIS on the Intranet server - this is where it gets annoying - I cant connect using pass-through authentication because there is no suitable user on the web server (which is not on the domain). If i set up a user on the web server, eg Intranet_USR, and give it appropriate rights to the folder, files and share, i can connect, but only view folder contents in IIS, not read, although that user has read privileges!! Any help much appreciated!

• High shmmax value in Redhat 6.3

  We are using Redhat 6.3 with 30G RAM to host our Postgres server. The (default) shmmax value is 68,719,476,736 In some forums I have read that having an shmmax value larger than the RAM causes extensive paging, but in the Redhat forums it warns against changing a kernel parameter that is already configured to a value larger than the minimum requirements for an environment. In ServerFault I've read that this probably has no impact. So is there any impact of having shmmax value RAM in a DB server, or the kernel understands this and handles it appropriately? Thanks

• Windows VPN - NO internet access

  I host a network of servers behind a Fortigate 200a firewall in the DC. I connect to those servers via a VPN connection. The problem is that when i connect to the VPN, I lose my internet connection on the local PC (windows 7). I would like to be connected to the VPN and still surf the web. i guess this means to only forward a range of ip to the VPN connection. I've read other answers on serverfault, talking about "un-check the 'Use default gateway on remote network' option in your Windows 7 PPTP network connection settings". When i do that , i get internet access but no access to the servers in the VPN. Any idea how to get both working? Should i change something on the fortigate 200a config? Do i need two networks cards? Is there a place in windows to define ip range for the vpn connection?

• Standalone server setup for compute capacity

  I'm developing an application for my company that will require a lot of compute capacity (running some very big mathematical calculations), and looking for some form of server setup to do this. For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

• log execution of certain commands on linux

  I have to maintain a system (debian) on which several users are allowed to install programs - so I would like to log, for example, if anyone executes "apt-get install" or "apt-get purge", so I can keep track of manually installed packages.. • Direct Access on Server 2012

  Scenario: Windows Server 2012 with the Remote Access role installed. IP set to static, registered DNS. 3 domain controllers, all running Server 2003 (I suspect this may be the issue) Done so far: DNS registered, firewall turned off after IPsec was applied. Able to ping all 3 DC's with no issues Problem: Going through the DA wizard generates this error. I am logged in as a domain admin, verified that I can ping the DC, verified IPsec allows me to contact it. Since this version hasnt been readily deployed yet, there isnt much help available online from what I can find. Any assistance ayone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am still new to the server world as far as things are considered. I would fit, user wise, between Superuser.com and serverfault.com (junior admin) Thanks to anyone who may be able to assist!

I can't seem to find a defenitive yes / no answers so I thought I'd ask the ServerFault community this simple question: Does XenServer (in any version) support Storage migration such as VMWare's Storage VMotion capability, or Hyper-V's storage migration ? I'm trying to do a comparative study of all platforms but I can't find a website (preff. Citrix supported or any other "legit" source) where it say's a defenitive yes or no. • Where can I learn about managing domain names for my websites? [closed]

  [I originally asked this question on serverfault.com, where it was closed as 'out of scope.' Hopefully it is appropriate for this forum] I am a developer who doesn't understand how to effectively manage Internet domain names. Say I registered a name with namecheap and host a website on linode. Now what is an a-record? What is a name server and do I host it with namecheap of linode? Why would I pay amazon when others are free? Does any of this matter in terms of website latency or reliability? I feel like a script kiddy, copying and pasting others' and hoping it works. Is there a book or other resource that explains all this? I know amazon is full of books about DNS, but afaik they are about setting up DNA servers for local networks, not the Internet. p.s. To emphasize, I'm asking for books or long write-ups which explain this to technically competent people, who just haven't had to think about the role of commercial registrars, name servers, commercial hosts, commercial websites and how all parts play together on the real internet (not local networks).

How would someone go about doing this on IIS7.5 for a ASP.NET MVC site? The plan so far: Register domain eg static.com, create a new website in IIS Manually copy the js / css / images folders from MVC as is so that they have the same paths on the new server Enable IIS gzip settings (js/css = high compression, images = none) Set caching with far future expiry dates <clientCache cacheControlCustom="public" /> in the web.config Never set any cookies on the static.com site Combine and minimize js / css Auto deploy changes in static content with WebDeploy Is this plan correct? And how can you use WebDeploy to deploy the whole web app to one server and then only the static items to another? • How can I make sharepoint use a small URL (e.g. http://internal.com instead of http://internal.com/sites/osfc/Pages/Default.aspx)

  Hi all, I'm new to sharepoint 2007, currently the home page is htp://internal.com/sites/osfc/Pages/Default.aspx but I would like to use htp://internal.com or have htp://internal.com redirect to the long URL. How can I do this? I thought of using a 301 redirect but the permissions on the site in IIS don't allow users to view files placed in the root and I don't want to mess with the permissions. Currently if I visit http://internal.com I see a sharepouint Access Denied page (htp://internal.com/_layouts/AccessDenied.aspx?Source=%2f). Note: I've used htp:// above as serverfault doesn't allow more than 1 https:// link. Many thanks Steven

• Where to set java heap options (e.g. -Xmx) for Tomcat 6 under Ubuntu 9.04?

  I'm running Tomcat using the tomcat6 package from Ubuntu 9.04, which makes a daemon out of Tomcat using jsvc. I'd like to know the proper way to set Java heap options like -Xmx for Tomcat. I'd like to put the configuration wherever is most stylistically correct, and wherever is least likely to be overwritten by Ubuntu package updates. The options I see right now: Hard-code them somewhere in /etc/init.d/tomcat6. Hard-code them somewhere in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/catalina.sh. Create a line in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/startup.sh to set CATALINA_OPTS to have the desired flags, and then export CATALINA_OPTS as an environment variable. (This looks like it will get picked up by catalina.sh.) The last option sounds like the best one, and it's advocated (without explanation of why) at http://serverfault.com/questions/121038/increasing-javas-heapspace-in-tomcat-startup-script. But I wanted to get a second opinion. Anyone want to confirm that there isn't a better way?

• rsync without password, none of google (server fault) tutorials worked

  I need to use rsync for a daily backup operation and in the past (on different servers) I managed to just use a rsa key etc, but now none of google (serverfault) tutorials work at all. It keeps asking me for a password. I have webmin and ssh/root access to both servers. My steps: create a key on server 1 send key.pub to server 2 add key.pub to .ssh/authorized_keys chmod 700 .ssh/authorized_keys go back to server 1 and try rsync and it keep asking for password... rsync command: rsync -avz -e ssh file.txt root@server2:/root EDIT: well, I cleaned up everything and this time, instead of inserting a custom name to the key I used the standard one on server1. sent the .pub to server2 and it worked as a charm... So the answer is that server1's ssh wasn't even using the right key...

  I am getting the following error when attempting to activate the Sharepoint Server Publishing Infrastructure. There are only about 140 columns defined in the entire site collection. I had previously activated and subsequently deactivated this feature. I don't know whether this might be causing the problem. But I really have no idea. I am a developer and this is my first question on serverFault. Please be gentle. Error Message: Column Limit Exceeded. There are too many columns of the specified data type. • Window 7 not recognizing printer for driver (re)installation

  OK I am having this printer problem. I had a user delete her printer. Please don't ask, I don't know. She is using an HP deskjet 6940 printer, and for her desktop she has an HP dx2400, with Windows 7. When I plug in the USB cable it should install the new drivers, but it does not. I believe you guys don't need to know my network setup. I could be wrong. If you guys here at serverfault could help that will be great. :)

• Remote access and local access same hostname

  Hi serverfault, I have a server in a clients network, seperated from theirs with a router/firewall, the intention is to have this server available through one hostname (example.com) My idea is to have (at least) a DNS server in the outside, to have outside (out of the clients' network) access the internal server. The problem would at that point be the internal client (PC A) My question: What would I have to do to make something like this work? Is it even possible or already done? The goal is to not have to change anything on either PC A or PC B, while both should access the same "internal server" while surfing to "example.com" Perhaps adding logic to the DNS server would work (Detect the external IP of internal client [PC A] is the same as the IP for example.com - Give the local IP as reply?) • Cisco 2950 Express Setup

  I've been donated a Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch by the company I work for to have a play with. I've reset it back to Factory Defaults, but having an issue with getting to Express Setup. I've followed the Express Setup (And Factory Reset) guide as listed here: Catalyst 2950 Switch Getting Started Guide Everything goes fine, until I get to step 10, I enter 10.0.0.1 into the browser, but I just get a Error 324 response. • Windows 2008 Enterprise License can't activate Standard Edition

  We have downloaded and installed the Windows 2008 Standard R2 edition months ago. Now the server is in production. We signed up the Microsoft Partnership Action Pack subscription last week and get a license for Windows 2008 Enterprise edtion. I am trying to activate the standard edition with Enterprise key as advsied here:http://serverfault.com/questions/318968/upgrade-domain-controller-sku-from-server-2008-r2-standard-to-enterprise , but failed. • Debugging COM+ applications

  I have a number of separate COM+ applications that I have to figure out; The COM+ applications respond to a number of scheduled tasks, and I need to know which COM components within which applications are being used when I execute each of these tasks. It is easy to figure out what (if anything) goes wrong in the event log, but as I am working on testing each components compatibility with the others; I need to know which ones I have actually tested by executing the scheduled tasks. Does anyone have some useful tips here? I've been looking into the sysinternals tools, and specifically processmonitor, but I have not found a way to make it monitor the COM+ applications yet. (I initially started this question here, but realized it's probably more suited for serverfault)

  Hi - first question on serverfault - pls excuse if asked elsewhere. I have a Dell Precision 690 with one 73GB (15000RPM) SAS drive in it. Running Windows 7 (x64) with a bunch of apps means it is running out of space. I have on order a 147GB (15000RPM) SAS drive (same GB/s, same make) which I want to put into the machine. Not knowing anything about SAS, do I need to replace the 73GB with the 147GB and restore from a backup, or can I put the drive in the machine and get the controller to treat the two drives as one large one? (The original paperwork for the machine says 73GB SAS (No RAID) if that is relevant.) Thanks in advance.

• Dealing with employees that use Hotspots? [closed]

  Recently a consultant revealed to me and my superiors that a particular department in my company had a tremendous decline in productivity over the past year. This department happened to mostly work with laptops and tablets and thus had wireless. Our barracuda did not display any vast amounts of internet entertainment and so I was initially puzzled by his statement. However he explained that more and more employees are using "hotspots" that when not broadcasted, become invisible to our network. So basically these people could connect to hotspots and watch youtube all day and we would never know it. The consultant also said that this was becoming an issue for many companies. So my question is, how can I detect invisible hotspots? I was browsing google and there are several different programs that can scan for such access points. But I am hoping to get a recommendation from the serverfault community. Thank you.

  We restart an apache server every day because RAM usage reaches its limit. Though of value See this serverfault answer, I dont think lowering the MaxClients in the apache configuration is a solution to the unknown root problem. Can you make sense out of the below data? Below is an extract of what $top with M returns: 20839 www-data 20 0 1008m 359m 22m S 4 4.8 1:52.61 apache2 20844 www-data 20 0 1008m 358m 22m S 1 4.8 1:51.85 apache2 20842 www-data 20 0 1008m 356m 22m S 1 4.8 1:54.60 apache2 20845 www-data 20 0 944m 353m 22m S 0 4.7 1:51.80 apache2 and then investigating a single process with $sudo strace -p 20839 returns only this one line, which is cryptic, for me: restart_syscall(<... resuming interrupted call ...> <unfinished ...> Any insights? • Updating solr on a ColdFusion 9 install?

  I'm thinking about upgrading the solr install included with ColdFusion 9 to the latest Apache release. This raises a few questions: Is there a compelling reason not to upgrade to 3.6 (is it slower than, more cumbersome than, or backwards-incompatible with 1.4) altogether? The solr install included with CF9 is customized. Is there a way to customize it myself, or to at least fool CF into treating it like its predecessor? Will all of my existing indexes work as-is (are?) with the new version? Has anyone out there on ServerFault done the upgrade? I'm especially interested in hearing about unforeseen or unexpected effects from the upgrade.

• 64-bit Hardware Virtualization on VirtualBox

  I am trying to set up a SQL Server practice lab using VirtualBox and a trial copy of Windows Server 2K8 R2 in ISO format. I received an error message that states my processor does not support 64-bit hardware virtualization. Although I "Enabled" Intel ardware virtualization in the BIOS that still doesn't work. According to the Intel website, the processor does support VT-x, however the accelerated tab in VirtualBox is greyed out and no references to VT-x are mentioned in the settings options available to me. Any ideas on how I can get around this? I checked around ServerFault and couldn't find anything but if I missed an applicable post a link is great too.
