• How to disable discrete GPU using NVIDIA drivers?

  I have a DELL studio XPS 13 (aka 1340) as of 12.04 most things run smoothly out of the box, but I have some power draining and warmness issues (if not to be called terrible heat issues) The system came with a NVIDIA GeForce 9500M (which has Hybrid SLI) and it shows up in "lspci" as these 2 cards 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G98 [GeForce 9200M GS] (rev a1) 03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400M G] (rev b1) I had to install nvidia-current over noveau driver 'cause noveau does freeze the system after suspension. By installing nvidia-current and running nvidia-xconfig the resume process after suspension is fixed. By the way both with nvidia-current and noveau the system drains a lot of battery and heats up a lot. I suppose this is because the discrete GPU is always on. I don't really need 3D graphics on this system, if not the minimal to run unity and compiz for window management. So my question is: How do I disable, using nvidia-current, the discrete GPU 9200M and use only the integrated one 9400M? notes: In BIOS I have no option to disable discrete GPU This I think is not applicable because of the suspension-freeze issue (with noveau): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics I've found this but I don't know which --sli option I should choose to fit my needs: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man1/nvidia-xconfig.1.html My system has not optimus or cuda, but anyone can tell me if bumblebee can work for me?

• Dell Dimension 8400 Startup error

  Hello all, thanks first for taking the time to read this and possibly help me...... now I am pretty decent of a computer tech...but not enough. I am having an issue with my computer which is running windows xp and as I mentioned it is a dell Dimension 8400. as soon as I power the system up the fan goes into hyper drive (spins like crazy and is very loud) then the start up screen with dell comes up and the loading bar gets stuck on the process of "Bios Revision A00" and never loads beyound that. I have read alot about it and think that the main problem was that it can not locate the file (which does have an updated version) I think it is A09. I can not enter safe mode, Bios mode or anything. I do have the file on my other computer and I was wondering if there is a way that I can use a usb flash drive (as I have read on other sites) to create a bootable MS-Dos diskette but I am failing at creating as such....is this possible? or is there anything else I can do? I tried to remove the battery from the system for about 10 minutes while it was completely unplug and tried then to reboot it and go into the bios menu but the same thing keeps happening....can anyone help me :-(

  which graphics driver will solve my laptop screen display problem? Recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS on my laptop and upgraded it to 12.10, through 12.04.1 LTS. I am not able to get the display right, from the beginning. During boot laptop screen is all green, and images / videos are not getting displayed properly when logged in. Actual problem started last week, when this laptop was with Windows Vista (preloaded), and I tried to update Nvidia graphics drivers. something went wrong and I couldn't find a way to fix, so decided to install Ubuntu. Over last week, installed / re-installed Ubuntu many times with various drivers with no success. Laptop : Dell Inspiron 1420 Installed OS : ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Current, Ubuntu 12.10) Nvidia driver : GeForce 8400M GS (tried in previous installations; not installed now) Print-screen was not able to catch this issue as mentioned in the comment, so I am posting screen photos.

  after much research ang googling, my web cam is still not recognized. In the time of Ubuntu 11.04 it was working fine. I did a fresh install of 11.10 and not more web cam. All the cheese and camera monotor and V4L tests and all failes with "cannot connect to /dev/video0" or equivalent. The output of 'lsusb' shows the webcam Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV2640 Webcam What I noticed is that neither /dev/v4l nor /dev/video* exists. If I re-install the v4l package all the /dev/video* are created, but no /dev/v4l If I reboot the /dev/video* are NOT created. I think the trouble is that the device are not created at boot time. I have a DELL Inspiron 1525 and until this fresh install the web cam worked fine. Can somebody help ? Thanks a lot Richard

  I use Dell Studio 1555, after update to maverick my fan started spinning full speed allways. I use xserver-xorg-video-ati/radeon drivers because fglrx messes with my desktop resolution when connecting external screen. Processor is mostly idle. U use some desktop effects. On the same configuration on Lucid my fan worked slower. • Why does my Ubuntu freeze in the middle of something with a blank screen?

  I am facing a serious problem as my Dell Optiplex 745 loaded with Ubuntu 12.04 32bit freezes with a blank screen no mouse cursor no keyboard activity in many occasions. Sometimes when I open firefox, or software center, I really can't tell what the main problem is, but what i am certain about is it i have to do a hard reset to reboot. I tried to use a live-cd to boot but it did the same, tried the recovery console but couldn't find a way to fix from there (I am a new user) suspected a hardware problem but windows runs flawlessly so I believe its something related to ubuntu. Specs: Intel Celeron D 3.06 GHZ 3.0 GB ram Intel built in graphics Q965 1 TB HDD Bios Phoenex 2.6.4 Please help I really love ubuntu and I don't want to go back to windows!

  I'm a complete Ubuntu and even Linux newbie. I'm learning here, so I'm grateful for any info to help me learn more about this. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with a Pentium 4 and 1GB of RAM. It's older but it's only going to be doing some small stuff for me when I get it up and going. I've tried installing several versions of Linux (but I really, really want Ubuntu) and I keep getting a similar kernel panic message.   I started using Ubuntu 32 bit last week. I love it but I recognized there was a problem with the cooling system. the fan doesn't stop and slightly loud all the time (that wasn't the case while running with windows 7). I told a friend who claimed that it should be a drivers problem. My machine is dell inspiron n5110 and the official site recommends win 7 64 bit only. there's no support for linux. (the page showing the machine drivers and system recommendation I tried to fix the problem using the "additional drivers", it opens but it shows nothing (no drivers to activate, just the help and the close buttons) is there a way to fix this?

• Why is the Touchpad tab missing?

  So my Dell Vostro 3360 came out of the box with an Alps touchpad which was detected as PS/2. Through these steps, I was able to get as far as it appearing to be recognized as a touchpad. Howevver, I do not get the Touchpad tab in the Mouse/Touchpad settings. Two-finger scrolling appears to work, and the Fn-F3 does disable the touchpad, but the settings are so brutal that it is almost impossible to work with. Very difficult to scroll at all accurately. I'm hoping there's some settings which can be tweaked which will help with this. Any ideas? My xinput listing is as follows: ? Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? • How reliable is the battery data in ubuntu the power statistics?

  Right now the power statistics show that: Energy when full: 25.5 Wh Energy (design): 93.2 Wh And indeed the battery doesn't seem to be lasting as long as it used too. My question: Is this data reliable? Does it really indicate that I should replace the battery, or could it be the charger, laptop, or OS that is stopping the battery from fully charging? Is any way of validating the battery is indeed to blame? I'd like to be sure before shelling out 90$ for a new battery. (If it helps, the battery is a 3 year old dell 9 cell rated at 90 Wh).

  My laptop was running smoothly until yesterday. Today, I can't connect to the Internet at home anymore. I am only able to access the router, but no Internet access. A have a Dell Latitude E6320 with Ubuntu 12.04. At my job, I don't have any problems connecting this laptop both via Wireless and Ethernet. At home, if I try connecting it through Windows, it does work fine. I even checked the MAC address and it's OK. My other laptop, which also runs Ubuntu, is not facing this problem.   I have an Intel corporation core processor integrated graphics controller (rev 18), and I am trying to get a proprietary driver for my graphics card so I can play Amnesia from the Humble Bundle. I am a female that can easily follow directions but doesn't know much about Linux yet. If you give me precise directions, I will follow them so you can help me fix the problem. I would really appreciate it! My laptop is a Dell n7010. Additional info: I believe that it is the graphics card that is causing Amnesia to crash, but I am unsure. • Alps touchpad detected as a mouse, can't enable/disable multitouch

  Now I know that this has been asked several times here but I couldn't find any decent solution to it. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my DELL N5110 and my touchpad is detected as a mouse, So I don't have the touchpad options availiable. Can't use multitouch and can't disable it either. I have tried the dkms driver from this link. But when I tried to install it with dpkg -i command, dpkg returns the following error: ERROR (dkms apport): unable to determine source package for psmouse-alps-dkms Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.2.0-25-generic-pae (i686) Consult /var/lib/dkms/psmouse-alps/0.10/build/make.log for more information. I have installed all the updates as well. When I open the BIOS setup and enter the System Info, it shows that my machine got 8GB of RAM installed but only 6GB is available (yes this is from the BIOS only). In Windows 7 (64bit Pro) it shows only 6GB of RAM are available. But if I run CPU-Z then it can detect all 8GB RAM. The machine came pre-configured and I have never opened the case before.

  Can hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login but no fixes work. Tried nomodeset and everything else appears to have upgraded but can't see anything. I really need this computer to work. It is an old Dell with 1.6 processor with old school monitor. I don't know why people are giving my question negative votes. If you know how to fix this, then please help me, as I have read and tried all the solutions that I've found. Just for the record reformatting is not fixing it, and I can't get a boot CD to load either. If you know how to use the blank screen fix tutorial, please explain cos I'm lost. Most people don't understand this stuff and an easy "how-to" fix would be nice.

• CentOS - Add additional hard drive raid arrays on Dell Perc 5/i card

  We have a Dell Poweredge 2900 system with Dell Perc 5/i card and 4 SAS hard drives attached, with NTFS partitions on them. We installed CentOS on one raid array on this controller with a different controller and it is working fine. We are now trying to access the drives shown above and they are not being shown in /dev as sdb, etc. sda is the drive that we installed centos on and it has sda1, sda2, sda3, etc. The CDROM has been picked up as well. If I scan for scsi devices then the perc and adaptec controllers are both found. sg0 is the CDROM and sg2 is the centos installed, however I think sg1 is the other drive but I cannot see anyway to mount the partitions, as only the drive is listed in /dev. • SSD seems dead after wakeup from Windows Sleep, BIOS stalls but doesn't find it anymore

  The morning, the following scary scenario happened: I woke up my Windows system Typed in my username and got an error (something like "could not load security xxx", but unsure of exact wording) System auto-restarted after cliking OK It didn't boot up anymore to the SSD with Windows 7 OS (I have another disk I can boot to, but that doesn't see the disk either). Obviously, this happened right after I instantiated a backup procedure, which hasn't succeeded either. The BIOS can't find the drive when I connect to SATA. And it can't find the drive when I connect it to SAS. I have a Dell Workstation T7400, most recent BIOS (version A06), version of SAS Host Bus Adapter BIOS (HBA) is MPTBIOS 6.14.10.00 (2007.09.29) from LSI Logic Corp. Other findings: When connecting to SATA, the DELL Logo screen stays really long (5 minutes) and then at the end of POST it says that a drive is not found When connecting to SAS, the SAS HBA initializing phase takes long (2 minutes, against normally 15 seconds) When running Dell Diagnostics, it doesn't finish and gives the error Exception occurred in module MPCACHE.MDM file "IOAPICSP.ASM" line 1645. I contacted Dell. On their advice I tried different slots and different cables to no avail. I use an APIC battery power, spikes in the power are thus unlikely. My conclusion so far: the disk is dead. I need this disk very badly because it contains the last few days of important development of which not all code was checked in the moment this happened.   First some background: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R M050, it is still under the Dell limited warranty and the Best Buy Extended warranty. I am currently dual booting Debian Squeeze and Windows 7, the only reason I go into Windows is to play video games specifically steam games. Issue: When I play my games in Windows I am capable of playing for anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours before I suffer a hard-lock. I cannot alt-tab, ctrl-alt-delete, ctrl-shift-escape do anything for 2-3 minutes. After this hard-lock period everything runs fine, I can continue the game for probably another hour at least before I suffer another lock. Games: Borderlands, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Starcraft 2, Garrys Mod What I have tried: Running the diagnostic suite in the dell bios, restoring the OEM Windows recovery partition on the HD, fresh installing Windows 7 Professional, updating BIOS, Calling tech support and having them run a software Hardware Diagnostics suite. The question: I think from the research that I have performed that it might be a lack of thermal paste on the CPU, would I be able to go to Best Buy and have them do a hardware diagnostic from the hardware level then have them be able to tell Dell that there is a hardware issue? Or would there be a different problem?

• How do I force Windows 7 to recognize my Projector?

  I have a new Dell XPS with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M and an old (several years) Epson PowerLite Cinema 550 projector. Windows 7 refuses to recognize that the projector is connected under normal conditions (I'll get to the strange condition in a moment). Here are some things that I have already tried: Confirm that the projector continues to work well on my old Windows XP laptop. Confirm that the video cable (HDMI to HDMI) is connected Make sure the Dell laptop is plugged in to wall power at all times Reboot both the computer and the projector Click "Detect" under the "Connect to an External Display" Windows dialog (no reaction) Click "Rigorous Display Detection" under NVIDIA Control Panel (dialog: none found) Checked "Force Television Detection on startup" under "My display is not shown..." in NVIDIA Control Panel (no effect) Here's where it gets weird... My projector has three states: off, standby and on. Standby means the power switch on the back is on, but the projector is effectively off (no picture, no access to menu or controls). When I plug in the HDMI cable while the projector is in standby, Windows detects the projector! It lets me switch to Duplicate, Extend, or Project Only mode, and adjusts the resolution appropriately. A new Generic Plug-n-Play monitor shows up in my device manager. A "Seiko EPSON PJ" display shows up in my NVIDIA control panel. Then if I turn my projector on, Windows no longer recognizes the display. This is true whether I turn the projector on while the HDMI cable is plugged in, or if I unplug the HDMI cable while turning on the projector. Anyone have any ideas, because I'm completely stumped...?

  How do you get better than 1024x768 resolution? Just installed MS Server 2008 64bit on a Dell PowerEdge 64bit box (works OK - Previously running MS Server 2003 32bit) After install - gives a a max resultion of 1024x768 I want to change the reslution to 1280x1024 (Same LCD Worked OK on server 2003) When I down load a driver I get a messeage "Radeon 7000 does not recognise driver" Also have Have a new LG W1042 I'd like to use. This goes up to 1440
