• Cannot install or remove packages

  I tried to install the openoffice.org package but it gave an error. Now i cannot repair, remove or install nothing. The Software center of xubuntu gives this error log. Nothing seems to solve this. I tried apt-get install -f but it does not solve the problem either. Any suggestions? installArchives() failed: (Reading database ... • Banshee encountered a Fatal Error (sqlite error 11: database disk image is malformed)

  I am running ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, and recently I am helping in testing out indicator-weather using the unstable buids. However there was a bug which caused my system to freeze suddenly (due to indicator-weather not ubuntu) and the only way to recover is to do a hard reset of the system. This happened a couple of times. And when i tried to open banshee after a couple of such resets I get the following fatal error which forces me to quit banshee. • Ubuntu 11.04 and 10.04 hang with black screen while installing from USB disk

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 from a USB flash stick and each time I try to boot from the USB key one of two things happen: A) The screen that asks you what you would like to do (e.g. run Ubuntu from the USB key or install it) shows up and the countdown to the default option starts to count down but as soon as I either touch the keyboard (sometimes I press enter or the arrow keys to select an option) or the countdown gets to zero the screen just locks up and nothing happens no matter how long I wait. B) When I boot from the USB key the screen will flicker for a second and then go black with a flashing white underscore at the top left corner of the screen. Again it doesn't matter how long I wait, nothing happens and pressing keys doesn't do a thing. The very first time I tried to install it I got a terminal-like screen that said something about a directory called 'casper' having an error of some sort. I have tried installing from USB using both 11.04 and 10.10. I'm about to try 10.04. I have read tons of forum posts about this but so far I haven't seen anything in the solutions that apply to me. My intention is to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I must keep Windows as I am required to use Visual Studio for one of my college courses. Right now I'm using Wubi but I really want a full install. I can't use LVPM because it doesn't work with the version of Wubi I used. So now I'm thinking my best bet is to try to get a clean install working. I'd also convert Wubi to a full install too but there's no solution as far as I've read. So could someone tell me a reason why this is happening or if there's something I can do to get around the problem? I'm using a Gateway LT2802u netbook with and Intel Atom N455 processor, 1GB RAM, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 graphics card, and a 250GB HDD. I don't have anything on my current Wubi install that I can't replace so keep in mind when answering that I don't care if I lose my current settings and files from Wubi. Thanks everyone! UPDATE I just answered my own question so in case anyone else is having this same problem using similar hardware, do the following: When I first tried installing 11.04 I used the recommended universal installer tool to create the USB live/installation disk. That caused the original problem. Note that I had already downloaded the 11.04 ISO and did not use the included downloader from the USB creator. After that failed I used the same USB creator but had it download 10.10 for me. It also failed with the same issue. I repeated this process with unetbootin as well for both versions. Finally, I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 ISO and used the recommended USB creator once again. There was an error while creating the USB live install so I reformatted the USB key as FAT32 and tried again. It created the USB key. I then booted from the USB flash drive and selected "Install Ubuntu" (exact wording was different). It worked! It took me through the process that you see shown in pictures on the Ubuntu website. I let it create the appropriate partitions for me and it simply worked. I did get a few errors while the system tried to restart after it installed. It hung on a terminal-like screen but I pressed ENTER and it restarted. I booted into Windows 7, it checked the disks as it sensed that I messed with a partition, then it booted into Windows normally. Now I'm going to uninstall Wubi and update my new full install of Ubuntu! I'm excited to get the benefits of a full install now. So in the end, hopefully someone can learn from what I did.

• How to Get All the Windows 8 Editions on One Install Disk

  There are a lot of different versions of Windows, but you probably didn’t know that short of the Enterprise edition, the disc or image that you own contains all versions for that architecture. Read on to see how we can use them to make a universal Windows 8 install disc. Things You Will Need A x86 Version of Windows 8 A x64 Version of Windows 8 A x86 Version of Windows 8 Enterprise A x64 Version of Windows 8 Enterprise A Windows 8 PC Note: While we will use all the images above you don’t really need the Enterprise Edition. You could always leave out parts of the tutorial if you know what you are doing, if you are not comfortable with that and still want to follow through you could always grab the Enterprise evaluation images that are available for free to the public, on MSDN. Getting Started To get started you will need to Download the Windows 8 ADK from Microsoft. Once downloaded go ahead and install it, you will only need the Deployment tools so be sure to uncheck the rest of the options. Lastly you will also need to create the following folder structure on the root of your C:\ drive to make things a bit easier. C:\Windows8Root C:\Windows8Root\x86 C:\Windows8Root\x64 C:\Windows8Root\Enterprisex86 C:\Windows8Root\Enterprisex64 C:\Windows8Root\Temp C:\Windows8Root\Final OK lets get started. Making The Image The first thing we need to do is create a base image, so mount the x86 version of Windows 8 and copy its files to: C:\Windows8Root\Final Now move the install.wim file from: C:\Windows8Root\Final\sources To: C:\Windows8Root\x86 Next go ahead and copy the install.wim file from the other 3 images, Windows 8 x64, Windows 8 Enterprise x86 and Windows 8 Enterprise x64 to the respective folders in Windows8Root, the install.wim file can be located at: D:\sources\install.wim Note: The above assumes that the images are always mounted at drive D. Remember that each install.wim is different so don’t copy them to the wrong directories or the rest of the tutorial wont work. Next switch to the Metro Start Screen and open the Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment. • Still about SSD potentials...write and read speed

  I have been working on SSD (solid state disk) for several months..Problems and Questions hit my head unexpectedly..Coz i am a virgin in ssd... Especially these days I was testing the write-read speed of ssd, which I was always caring.... however result turned out not good as I expected, or even worse Three kinds of read-write were implemented in my test read and write directly from and into ssd, with openning ssd as a whole device. in windows: _open("\\:g", ***).. It can be very tricky and hairy that you'd write a data with size of folds of 512, at the disk position of folds of 512bytes... So, If you wanto write just a byte or 4 bytes, you'v to write at least a whole sector one time. Read and write data from and into files located in SSD... Read and Write data from and into files in mechanical Disk I compared the pratices below...I found ssd sucks...the ssd performs worse than mechanical disk... so i am wondering where i can get the potential performance of ssd, since ssd is said to a substitute for mechanical disk in the future.. Nevertheless, I test ssd with a pro-hard-disk tools..ssd is like twice speedier than mechanical disk. So, why?

  I have a Corsair R60 ssd disk which is a disk with both sata and usb connectors. But the usb thing seems to be a bit non-standard, or maybe its just my fedora linux. When I insert the disk using a usb cabel to a running Fedora 14 linux system, a device called /dev/sg3 is added but that is all. No new /dev/sd* device is created so I can't mount the disk. If I look at cat /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs I get ATA Hitachi HTS54321 FB2O HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N RP05 Seagate Desktop 0130 Corsair CSSD-R60GB2 So the disk is there. (The last entry) but my linux will for some reason not see it as a usb hard disk. When I insert other usb disks they work fine. It is only this specific disk which causes problems. I have tried on 3 different computers with the same result. A hint to the problem may be that if I add the disk to a windows system(With usb) the disk is called "A fixed disk" and not a portable disk as expected. The disk works fine with linux If i connect it with the sata cabel, but I would really like to have it working with usb too. (To mount it on computers without sata).

  The PGP Whole Disk Encryption for Mac OS X Quick Start User Guide version 10.0 contains the following remarks: PGP Corporation deliberately takes a conservative stance when encrypting drives, to prevent loss of data. It is not uncommon to encounter Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) errors while encrypting a hard disk. If PGP WDE encounters a hard drive with bad sectors, PGP WDE will, by default, pause the encryption process. This pause allows you to remedy the problem before continuing with the encryption process, thus avoiding potential disk corruption and lost data. To avoid disruption during encryption, PGP Corporation recommends that you start with a healthy disk by correcting any disk errors prior to encrypting. and As a best practice, before you attempt to use PGP WDE, use a third-party scan disk utility that has the ability to perform a low-level integrity check and repair any inconsistencies with the drive that could lead to CRC errors. • Where's my free space gone? (on my mac) [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Something’s slowly eating my HD space Somehow part of my files from my USB disk, 40GB of it (exactly the space I was missing), were copied to /Volumes/ and when I mounted the disk it was called "600GB Disk 2", while "600GB Disk" was filled with duplicated data. All that happened at once, slowly, just this morning when I turned on my macbook. I could notice that thanks to Disk Inventory X. I could actually see those on GrandPerspective, but I thought it was just scanning my USB limited to that folder for whatever reason. On Disk Inventory I could see the /Volumes/ listing one folder as a folder and the second one as a link, like it should be. Well, looking at that folder, I quickly associated what was in it with my scheduled backup on Carbon Copy Cloner. I'm still not sure why the USB disk was mounted with wrong name, but what happened was CCC store the full path information of the source and destination, so when it tried to do the schedule backup it created the path that didn't exist, and copied everything there - while it should be copying into the mounted volume. While this is solved this time, what else could I have done to diagnose this kind of issue, for the next time?

• How can I create a 4TB partition on my software RAID5 device?

  I have set up a RAID5 device with three 2TB hard drives using mdadm. The device was successfully created, but I cannot seem to create a partition on the device. When I try to make an ext3 or ext4 partition via Disk Utility, I get the following error Error creating partition: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_add_partition: device_file=/dev/md0, start=0, size=4000526106624, type= Entering MS-DOS parser (offset=0, size=4000526106624) MSDOS_MAGIC found found partition type 0xee => protective MBR for GPT Exiting MS-DOS parser Entering EFI GPT parser GPT magic found partition_entry_lba=2 num_entries=128 size_of_entry=128 Leaving EFI GPT parser EFI GPT partition table detected containing partition table scheme = 3 got it got disk new partition guid '' is not valid type '' for GPT appear to be malformed I have seen this question, but that seems to suggest using gparted to do the partitioning. I'm fine with doing that, but my RAID device doesn't show up in the list of gparted devices. I suspect because this is a RAID and not a regular disk. I have already created a GPT partition table on the device. How can I add a partition to my device?

• Diagnose PC Hardware Problems with an Ubuntu Live CD

  So your PC randomly shuts down or gives you the blue screen of death, but you can’t figure out what’s wrong. The problem could be bad memory or hardware related, and thankfully the Ubuntu Live CD has some tools to help you figure it out. Test your RAM with memtest86+ RAM problems are difficult to diagnose—they can range from annoying program crashes, or crippling reboot loops. Even if you’re not having problems, when you install new RAM it’s a good idea to thoroughly test it. The Ubuntu Live CD includes a tool called Memtest86+ that will do just that—test your computer’s RAM! Unlike many of the Live CD tools that we’ve looked at so far, Memtest86+ has to be run outside of a graphical Ubuntu session. Fortunately, it only takes a few keystrokes. Note: If you used UNetbootin to create an Ubuntu flash drive, then memtest86+ will not be available. We recommend using the Universal USB Installer from Pendrivelinux instead (persistence is possible with Universal USB Installer, but not mandatory). Boot up your computer with a Ubuntu Live CD or USB drive. You will be greeted with this screen: Use the down arrow key to select the Test memory option and hit Enter. Memtest86+ will immediately start testing your RAM. If you suspect that a certain part of memory is the problem, you can select certain portions of memory by pressing “c” and changing that option. You can also select specific tests to run. However, the default settings of Memtest86+ will exhaustively test your memory, so we recommend leaving the settings alone. Memtest86+ will run a variety of tests that can take some time to complete, so start it running before you go to bed to give it adequate time. Test your CPU with cpuburn Random shutdowns – especially when doing computationally intensive tasks – can be a sign of a faulty CPU, power supply, or cooling system. A utility called cpuburn can help you determine if one of these pieces of hardware is the problem. Note: cpuburn is designed to stress test your computer – it will run it fast and cause the CPU to heat up, which may exacerbate small problems that otherwise would be minor. It is a powerful diagnostic tool, but should be used with caution. Boot up your computer with a Ubuntu Live CD or USB drive, and choose to run Ubuntu from the CD or USB drive. When the desktop environment loads up, open the Synaptic Package Manager by clicking on the System menu in the top-left of the screen, then selecting Administration, and then Synaptic Package Manager. Cpuburn is in the universe repository. To enable the universe repository, click on Settings in the menu at the top, and then Repositories. Add a checkmark in the box labeled “Community-maintained Open Source software (universe)”. Click close. In the main Synaptic window, click the Reload button. After the package list has reloaded and the search index has been rebuilt, enter “cpuburn” in the Quick search text box. Click the checkbox in the left column, and select Mark for Installation. Click the Apply button near the top of the window. As cpuburn installs, it will caution you about the possible dangers of its use. Assuming you wish to take the risk (and if your computer is randomly restarting constantly, it’s probably worth it), open a terminal window by clicking on the Applications menu in the top-left of the screen and then selection Applications > Terminal. Cpuburn includes a number of tools to test different types of CPUs. If your CPU is more than six years old, see the full list; for modern AMD CPUs, use the terminal command burnK7 and for modern Intel processors, use the terminal command burnP6 Our processor is an Intel, so we ran burnP6. Once it started up, it immediately pushed the CPU up to 99.7% total usage, according to the Linux utility “top”. If your computer is having a CPU, power supply, or cooling problem, then your computer is likely to shutdown within ten or fifteen minutes. Because of the strain this program puts on your computer, we don’t recommend leaving it running overnight – if there’s a problem, it should crop up relatively quickly. Cpuburn’s tools, including burnP6, have no interface; once they start running, they will start driving your CPU until you stop them. To stop a program like burnP6, press Ctrl+C in the terminal window that is running the program. Conclusion The Ubuntu Live CD provides two great testing tools to diagnose a tricky computer problem, or to stress test a new computer. While they are advanced tools that should be used with caution, they’re extremely useful and easy enough that anyone can use them. • Ubuntu 11.10 on MacBook Air 2011 - problems with drivers

  I had just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my MacBook Air, and have a lot of problems. I used this tutorial, after executing script and rebooting some problems were solved, but now I have completely not working touchpad, keyboard & screen backlight works incorrect (screen brightness is not 100%, but it is 100% in settings, keyboard backlight turns on/off randomly). How to fix it? P. S. Script said that it's no such file or directory for some .icc file. Google says, that I should copy it from Mac OS X drive, but I completely replaced it with Ubuntu.

• SQL SERVER – Concurrancy Problems and their Relationship with Isolation Level

  Concurrency is simply put capability of the machine to support two or more transactions working with the same data at the same time. This usually comes up with data is being modified, as during the retrieval of the data this is not the issue. Most of the concurrency problems can be avoided by SQL Locks. There are four types of concurrency problems visible in the normal programming. 1)      Lost Update – This problem occurs when there are two transactions involved and both are unaware of each other. The transaction which occurs later overwrites the transactions created by the earlier update. 2)      Dirty Reads – This problem occurs when a transactions selects data that isn’t committed by another transaction leading to read the data which may not exists when transactions are over. Example: Transaction 1 changes the row. Transaction 2 changes the row. Transaction 1 rolls back the changes. Transaction 2 has selected the row which does not exist. 3)      Nonrepeatable Reads – This problem occurs when two SELECT statements of the same data results in different values because another transactions has updated the data between the two SELECT statements. Example: Transaction 1 selects a row, which is later on updated by Transaction 2. When Transaction A later on selects the row it gets different value. 4)      Phantom Reads – This problem occurs when UPDATE/DELETE is happening on one set of data and INSERT/UPDATE is happening on the same set of data leading inconsistent data in earlier transaction when both the transactions are over. Example: Transaction 1 is deleting 10 rows which are marked as deleting rows, during the same time Transaction 2 inserts row marked as deleted. When Transaction 1 is done deleting rows, there will be still rows marked to be deleted. When two or more transactions are updating the data, concurrency is the biggest issue. I commonly see people toying around with isolation level or locking hints (e.g. NOLOCK) etc, which can very well compromise your data integrity leading to much larger issue in future. • Multiple problems using BOINC in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Berkeley's BOINC software in Windows and I loved it, however I'm having the following problems using it in Ubuntu 12.04: 1) The software doesn't appear in the systray, only in the Unity dock (left side) 2) I can minimize BOINC to the dock but when I open and close other program it maximizes again, wich is very annoying 3) The software can't be closed, it only minimizes to the Unity dock, and nothing happens using right click and close either 4) The software doesn't start at startup or as a startup application 5) It doesn't have a screensaver like in Windows I know it's a lot a problems, but I hope they can be fixed, because I love to use this software, and knowing it's open-software it would be a shame it didn't run on Ubuntu like it should.

• Problems installing 13.10 inside VMWare Player 4

  In the past I had no problems installing Ubuntu 12.04 inside VMWare Player 4.0.4 on my Windows 7 Pro machine. Now I installed Ubuntu 13.10 and have a couple of problems: the default screensize (even during the installation) is gigantic I've told Ubuntu to automatically login - after reboot the gigantic screen occurs without showing anything, without doing anything on mouse clicks, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does not work switching to console using Ctrl+Alt+F1...F6 works, but is incredible slow invoking 'sudo reboot now' does not succeed, it prints Killing all remining processes... [fail] Restoring resolver state... [ OK ] Will now switch to single-user mode root@ubuntu1310:~# invoking now 'shutdown now' will soon show the same error. What I need to do to get Ubuntu 13.10 up and running in VMWare Player?

  please help me fix these problems because i really like ubuntu 12.04 and i have replaced my windows 7 ultimate for this everytime i turn on my ideapad it hangs, but when i insert my usb device that i used for the installation and restart my ideapad, it works. How can i open my lenovo without my usb device? my keboard doesn't work. i pressed each key and none of it work. those are the first two problems, i haven't tried the microphone, speaker and webcam yet because I really hate that i can't even type a single letter. please do fix this problem.

  I am not sure if i have posted it to right place, so if no please don't judge me, I am a newbie. I installed Ubuntu 13.04 and I am happy with it. I have two OS's in dual boot. Ubuntu and Windows 7. in Ubuntu I have 2 problems. The first one is when I suspend my system I cannot resume it again. It sometimes show me the password screen (user names and etc. (sorry i don't know the exact name of it)) and sometimes just a blank screen. what can be the problem? The second one is this: When I hit ALT+F2 it looks like this ( but not always. when I restart the system everything is OK till about 30-40 minutes. and then it looks like this. Please help, I really like Ubuntu but these 2 problems ruin my plans about it. Thanks

I know the os has problems with Nvidia stuff but if i can get the dual screens working, that is one thing out of the way. • I`ve got some problems with new Acer Aspire S3

  I just got a new Acer Aspire S3 Laptop, and I've installed Ubuntu on it. Here is some problems: 1. Bluetooth (AR3012) can't find any devices. rfkill shows that everything is fine, but I still can't connect to any device. (Maybe it was turned off in stock windows?) 2. Can't change screen brightness (I've tried Timex's solution with new 3.2-rc kernel and some grub options, touchpad works fine,but I still can`t use Fn+Right/Left) 3. 720p video in all players(VLC, mplayer and totem) works wrong. I found some similar problems on intel video chips with vblank sync or something like that. Video plays as it should, but i always see a line which appears on action scenes (looks like some parts of a screen updates faster) Maybe there are some solutions from similar laptops that I can find? PS I've tried ubuntu 11.04 with old kernel and linux mint 12-rc with 3.2-rc2 kernel.

• Graphics problems: noise-like glitch, and screen freezes in Ubuntu 13.04

  I have recently upgraded to 13.04 and am using unity. I am experiencing two intermittent problems with the graphics: 1) All or part of the screen is taken up by 'noise', which lasts for about a second, see screenshot: 2) The launcher panel freezes. I can still move the mouse and the keyboard responds to function keys (I can dim the screen), but I cannot select anything. At the moment I recover by ctr-alt-f1, and restarting lightdm. My computer is a Samsung Chronos 7 laptop, model NP700Z5C, with Intel HD 4000 graphics The same problems occur with lightdm and gdm. I have attempted to install the intel drivers (as the screenshot hints) but these are not indicated as additional drivers in software & updates so I'm not sure whether they are in use. Any suggestions?

• Installing Ubuntu 11.10 on HP Envy 15 - Partition Problems

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 on my HP ENVY 15, however I am getting some problems. When I come to the partitioning section of the installation I am given my 4 partitions that I have. I change the partition of my 450 gb to 420 gb, so that I can use that 30gb space that I free up to install Ubuntu on it. After I do this step, instead of seeing the keyword to the 30gb I see unusable. I have read that there can not be more than 4 partitions somewhere for a UBUNTU installation, but that is not true, because I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Lenovo which has the same amount of partitions as my ENVY ( I do get problems on my lenovo with installing ATI drivers but that is a completely different story). Does anybody have an idea of why I am getting an unusable notification next to my freed up space?

  Ive always had problems with skype ususally with audio, trying to keep the usb headphones set correctly. Wha tive found is that when i see the Pulseaudio server in the audio list in Skype, and thats my only option, Skype works good,...stable and reliable. Second issue: Its been crashing a bit, just locks up and the only thing to free it up is a reboot,.. These problems are under the new release 13.10. so concider this a bug report. DEVELOPERS: You all need to make a good channel for people to report bugs,.... OK thats all/

• Will using FAT32 provide better pagefile performance than NTFS?

In http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc938440.aspx , says that FAT32 is faster when using smaller volumes. Ok separate disk, will give more performance than same disk. But did anyone test this? Scenario 1 : Separate hard disk FAT32 (small volume) Scenario 2 : Separate hard disk NTFS which one will win? minimum gain?
