• Xenserver boot error

  I'm trying to get Xenserver 5.5 running on a spare computer here, hardware specs: Intel Q6600, 4GB Ram, and Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard Xenserver itself installs fine onto a 150GB sata hdd, however it fails to boot whatsoever, giving this garbled mess: http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/9918/biosi.jpg it's not frozen because if I press enter it just prints a different garble and it also says "could not find kernel image". The strangest thing is if I put that hdd in my desktop and assign it to a VMWare desktop vm (under the ESX profile no less) it boots perfectly... leading me to believe there are no problems with the install or the hdd itself. From what I can tell the error seems to be occuring completely seperately to Xenserver, in the bootloader extlinux?. If there was a motherboard compatibility issue I would think it would also have manifested during installation, and the fact the problem seems to be with the booting into Xen makes me doubt this. Any ideas guys? (I'm using Xen because it can do PCI passthrough without VT-d.)

• Path of md device wrong after reboot

  I have to set up a software raid (level1) on a Ubuntu server 12.04. It should serve files in the network via Samba. The server has the following disks: 250gb Sata hdd (Ubuntu is installed on that drive) 2 TB Sata hdd (first disk in raid array, data disk) 2 TB Sata hdd (second data disk) I created one partition on every data disk with the type Linux raid autodetect. In the second step I created the raid1 with the following command: mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 After that, I added the array to the mdconf: mdadm --examine --scan >> /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf The problem is: After a reboot the array is not available on the path /dev/md0. Instead of that it gets reassembled as /dev/md/0 but it is not very reliable. Has anybody a solution for this issue?

  I just changed my disk setup from: 1 SATA HDD Primary OS Disk 2x SATA HDD Backup Disks in RAID 1 TO: 1 SATA SSD Primary OS Disk 1 SATA HDD Backup Disk [No RAID] Everything worked great, no problem. So, since I don't have a RAID array anymore, I decided that I could change my BIOS setting to AHCI instead of RAID. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R v1.0 mobo. These are my steps: Settings Integrated Peripherals "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode" = RAID -- Changed this setting to AHCI Reboot Windows Start screen shows up, but as the color orbs are spinning into focus, BSOD and immediate restart Repeated reboot several times, same outcome Next Step: Launch BIOS settings Integrated Peripherals "Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode" = RAID -- Changed this setting to AHCI Reboot Windows Start screen shows up, but as the color orbs are spinning into focus, BSOD and immediate restart Repeated reboot several times, same outcome Switch both settings back to RAID, reboot, and Windows starts up just fine, no issues. What am I missing? Why can't I set it to AHCI mode without BSODs?

• Ubuntu not showing disk

  I have a laptop which had broken windows 7 installed on it. I created a ubuntu live usb and tried installing ubuntu over that win7. After a few minutes, I got an error message, so I needed to restart the computer. Now the laptop says that there is no bootable device - reasonable message given that there was an error during linux installation. But: Bios can see my hard drive, When I start ubuntu in live mode, and try either sudo fdisk -l or gparted, it doesn't show any hard disk drives. I am 90% sure that hdd is broken, but it is wierd that bios can see it, and ubuntu doesn't. How can I be 100% sure about that hdd? Is there any additional way of detecting my hdd from ubuntu?

  I had a Western Digital External 1TB drive, which I was accessing via USB. I decided one day, that I would prefer to mount the HDD in my case, and access it via SATA interface. So I took it apart, and the actual mounting was a breeze. The only thing is, I think the device has some default power saving features, which means the device tends to stop spinning when idle for (x) amount of time. This creates delays when I am accessing the HDD. Is there anyway I can turn off these power saving features for this HDD?

• partitioning problems

  I had on my laptop a dual system (Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7) and someway the partitions messed-up. Windows stopped from booting, I just got a blinking cursor, but Ubuntu worked fine. I tried to fix the windows boot (fixmbr, fixboot, bootsect /nt60 C:/....) but now grub was overwritten and I have no OS. Finally I formatted the hdd (low format), installed Windows, partition hdd with paragon partition manager and now I want to install Ubuntu, but Ubuntu sees an empty hdd, weird, can anyone tell me what can I do? EDIT: I have created: partition 1: 100MB ntfs - windows reserved (drive B) partition 2: 50GB ntfs win 7 (drive C) partition 3: 50GB ext3 linux partition 4: 'the rest' ntfs for data (drive E) (the swap i will create after)

• cannot move file: "file cannot be found" (Windows XP)

  I have some CR2 files in a subfolder of My Documents called My Photos on a Windows XP PC. I want to move them across a WIFI network to an external HDD attached to a Windows 7 PC. I have read/write permissions on the external HDD, as I mapped to this HDD using the Windows 7 user account. When I try to move a single CR2 file, I receive "Cannot copy IMG_3317: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name." If I refresh the source folder, the file is still there. It is not read only, and I have read/write access to the source file. I can view its properties. Why can't I move this file? I have been able to move similar files in the past.

• How to clone and deploy multiple machines?

  Hi, See what I wanna do is basically make bootable clones or disc images or whatever(let's call it "stuff" for now ) and store many of them in a single big HDD. Then, I wanna use that big HDD and the "stuff" in it to be able to deploy new machines without the hassle of reinstalling Windows and whatnot(i.e. I do not want to restore nor simply clone a same machine, I literally want to use clones to save time during machine set up). Obviously I'd deploy the "stuff" onto an HDD going into a machine that I know the hardware of to avoid driver issues and whatnot. I alos have enough Windows keys to deal with the multiple activations. I tried using Acronis True Image but it doesn't seem to do what I want(unless idk how to use it properly). Any advice is welcome thanks :)

  Question: Is getting a mini-PCIe worth investing in? Info: I have a an Acer Aspire 1 n270. It has this mini PCIe slot that is just sitting there empty. I would like to change this, and I would like to speed up my boot time. So I've been considering getting a mini-PCIe SSD. They are about the same price as faster same size drives of the 2.5" variation. The advantage of the mini-PCIe card is that I can have my HDD still. So I have good boot time, but still have the storage of my HDD. What I want to know is: will this allow me to spin down the HDD more often allowing me to save power? Will the OS (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) see them as separate drives? Is there anything that the mini-PCIe slot could be better used for? Thanks. ~n

• Access is denied while moving a file from different volumes

  i have a portable 500GB HDD plugged into my dell xps system. The system have windows 7 professional edition. the problem is that when i try to open a file(visual studio .sln file) it is saying that access is denied. I cannot copy this file to a different location(within my local HDD) it is saying that i need permission for the task to complete. I've checked and confirmed the following things 1) I've logged into an admin account before attempting these operations 2) My admin account have 'Full Control' 3) I've full control over the portable HDD 4) I changed the 'UAC' settings to 'Never notify' Please help.

  Hi! Im trying to get a raid0 setup going. I have a 750 gb hdd with the OS on it and two 80gb HDD. For right now, I just want to raid0 on the two 80Gb hdd. When I enable raid in my Bios, Win7 has a BSOD during boot. As far as I understand I need to install raid drivers. However how can I do this? The win7 DVD doesnt seem to have a driver install option. Any suggestions? Thanks EDIT: I saw that there was as seperate setting for the 4th and 5th sata ports. So I pluged in my OS drive into there and left it on IDE. Still didnt work though, am I miss understanding that idealogy?

  hi, i try to speed up boot time of my linux server box which uses removable HDD rack's the current boot time is around 2 min's but if i connect the hdd's directly to the mainboard its about 2 sec's the problem is that ahci's kernel implementation causes a timeout of around 30 seconds for each disk during boot which originates from the hdd-rack after the timeout the kernel prints that the disk is limited with speed to 1.5gbps and udma/133 is used so the question i have is: how can i set this in grub as a boot option so the kernel doesnt have to wait for a timeout and just hardcoded limits the speed of the disks? i read about a few options like pci=nomsi or such, which dont work thats why im asking for limiting precisely the disks during boot thx

• Bootable ISO to USB stick xp wuickest method

  My dog took a leak on my PC when I went out (ye funny), now it reandomly restarts - im convinced the HDD is failing because the Windows seagate diagnostic program fails on a few tests. I want to run this prior to windows in an attempt to try and recover sectors, the program includes an iso which can be written to cd and booted, but i dont have any cd's. I tried using unetbootin to create the bootable usb from the iso file (SeaToolsDOS222ALL.576.ISO) but it doesnt work. When i boot from the usb hdd unetbootin loads with "default" in the menu. No joy booting though. I checked the usb hdd in windows and all the files are there, extracted from the iso file, wont boot though. Any ideas? Im using windows xp, or

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now.   Need to clone and restore existing 64GB HDD onto a 256GB HDD, can't manage to gain access to the internals of this laptop. I checked with Samsung, they do not make manuals available nor will they help over the phone as to how to remove the bottom cover of this Samsung NP900X1A Laptop. They did offer to sell me a manual BUT they are out of stock for another 10-15 days. I saw the screws under the 4 rubber feet and 4 rubber grommets, all removed but the cover is still on.   I am completely out of ideas. I have 2.5inch HDD from my old laptop, I have tried with 2 different HDD enclosures but my desktop does not recognize it. Not even showing in the disk management or BIOS. The HDD works fine if I use in a 3.5 inch enclosure with external power. I have tried 3 different Y USB cables. I have also got a 7 port self powered 2A USB hub. I have updated my chipset drivers as well. The problem is with my desktop , the enclosures work fine with my new laptop. • Computer temporarily freezes and then resumes

  This happens on ALL operating systems (7, Ubuntu, etc.). What happens is everything for 1-3 seconds becomes unresponsive, I then hear what sounds like my other internal hard drive 'spinning up', and then viola everything is responsive again. Note: Already ran SMART tests, no issues at all. I think issue is that the HDD spins down and when need it gets 'turned-on' (OS settings turn off HDD's after 20 mins of inactivity) and because my pagefile is on the other HDD it causes OS to temporarily freeze.   I recently got an ASUS K55A series laptop with Windows 8 on it, and have been trying to load Windows 7 on it for days to no avail, and recently I discovered how to get my Windows 7 install DVD to boot from the BIOS, but I deleted all of my Windows 8 system information from both partitions of my HDD and Windows 7 setup says it cannot install on the disc because of a partition format issue. I did not delete the recovery HDD partition for Windows 8, but I can't get the HDD to show up in my boot menu in BIOS, and none of the F keys work to get to recovery mode (only DEL and F2 work to get me into BIOS)

  I have upgraded the HDD in a Samsung laptop and would like to restore the "Press F4 for recovery" partition. My new disk has three partitions, System, Windows, and Recovery. I did a dd of the recovery partition from the old HDD to the new. I also set the diag flag on the new HDD. • Windows Network copy and access denied randomly

  I have a windows 2008 R2 server and I now installed a new bigger HDD into it. I wanted to copy big AVI files to the new server hdd what is shared on the local network. I have write access to the servers hdd and I can successfully copy smaller files to it. But when I copy bigger files more than 500MB randomly on the copy I get Access Deny message. If I use RDP I can copy files through RDP client. I checked error messages at the server but I didn't found any error about this access deny. Because of RDP copy works I don't think that this could be hardware error. I think this is some kind of software setting error. Someone has faced this kind of error? Or somebody has idea what could cause or how to find the root of the problem?

  I have a 500GB HDD on my desktop, and there are two partitions as C and D. The computer would not start and shows me a error message. Notice - Hard drive self monitoring system has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends you that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard. So I took the hdd out of the desktop and made a USB external HDD. My laptop recognizes the hard drive as “I” drive and “J” drive. I am able to click “J” and see folders and files. But there is no response when I click “I” while it makes weird clicking sound. Can anyone explain why I drive doesn't work while J drive works on same physical hard drive? Is there anyway that I can fix?

• Computer loads BIOS, but won't load OS

  I have just purchased a brand new motherboard bundle, installed into the old case with the old PSU and the old HDD. I can get into the BIOS, but whenever I try to boot from the HDD, it just sits with the fans going, but nothing is displayed. The moniter works (tested with another machine), and I'd hope there are no problems with the motherboard, CPU or RAM because as I said I only brought them today. The only things I can think of are: The PSU's motherboard connector is a 20-pin, and the motherboard has a 24-pin connector (not a problem with the previous board) The OS is not supported (doesn't seem likly to me, but possible I guess) Here is my system configuration: Motherboard: ASUS F1A55-M le CPU: AMD APU A6 3500 HDD: 1Tb SATA RAM: 4Gb DDR3 OS: Ubuntu Satanic v666.9 PSU: Winpower ATX-400 (this thing is REALLY old) If anyone is able to offer a reason as to why this is not working, or a possible solution, it would be greatly appriciated.

• USB Permission - Write protection

  I have an external harddisk and my friends asked for it. The point is I don't trust in his anti-virus software. Is there anyway to allow some folders (I prepare hdd space for him) to write-able and all others is read-only ? or is there a software that can do like this ? And it would be great if I can have full access on my computer ONLY (may be with some specific software on my PC) and without having to modify anything. I don't ask for hdd-encryption since I only want to limit the area of write-able folder (and allow my friend to read through all my data), later I can scan for virus myself only in that area ... scanning entire hdd with 500gb/friend is not fun at all ! • Restore boot sector from a hard disc to another

  I have a win7 on my old Seagate HDD. Recently I installed one new SSD and setup win8 on it. So I have a boot table to choose win7 or win8 to startup. Now when I tried to remove the old one (the Seagate), I can't boot into windows any more. I just have a blinking underscore in boot screen, forever ang forever. I guess the reason is that the boot sector, or boot table (or something like that) was installed on the old HDD. So may someone show me how to boot into my win8 without reinstall the old HDD.
