  • intel atom getting too hot

    - by user59565
I own an Asus 1215N which is getting very hot Intel Atom 525D dual core ION 2 (geforce 220 + GMA 3150) 4 GB RAM Ubuntu 12.04 it hits 86 C at idle. Some times (at load or turned on 1 hour) it shuts down due to heat, in Windows 7 it runs idle at 49 C. I tried an acpi call to shut down the nVidia chip which is cooled together with the Atom chip. That didn't solve the problem. To check up to see if it really turned off I checked how much power the laptop consumed, it only went from using 1400 mW to 860 mW, no changes in heat. I also tried reapply the standard heat adhesive, the old heat adhesive made it run at 97 (it couldn't even put up a useful install of Ubuntu). This really annoys me, as Ubuntu is the OS of choice to me. Should I try compile the kernel? Is it true that compile for a P4 is the better choice to the atom, when compiling the kernel for this processor architecture? Now I tried compiling the kernel for atom. Now temperature is 83 C (think the drop has more to do with ambient temp than the customized kernel) help appreciated

  • Uninstall ax88179 package

    - by jackbenny
I've installed the ax88179 package from the PPA (since the ax88179 driver isn't in the 3.8 kernel). But now I'd like to install kernel 3.11.6 and this module is already included here. So I'd like to uninstall the the module from the package but this fails with the following error message The following packages will be REMOVED: ax88179* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

  • Proprietary Driver missing after Kernel upgrade

    - by Chris
I recently upgraded my kernel to the Linux 3.4 kernel. Upon doing so, I found that it zapped my proprietary driver for my graphics card. As an alternative, I had saved Catalyst 12.8, but now it will not open through Software Center. I tried several other terminal methods, but it seems that many of these postings are bunk. They only work until you're almost done and then you get errors. I just need a little help from somebody who has been there, as I am new to Ubuntu. I'm kind of afraid to reboot because this is my 3rd full load of Ubuntu. Any ideas?

  • Computer crashed during 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade

    - by Z Swim
My computer crashed (due to heat) during the update process for the 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade. My computer will not boot ant all in 3.0.0.17 now and 3.0.0.16 is unstable (wireless networking doesn't work, also crashes often). I found the boot to previous versions tool at start up and the last stable version is 3.0.0.15-generic. However, my computer still thinks that it has 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic, even though both of these versions are broken. Is there anyway to force a reinstall of the 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic kernel updates from 3.0.0.15 and associated other updates?. (Without having to do a full reinstall?) I am running ubuntu 11.10. Thanks!

  • After Upgrading to 12.04 the Kernel won't Initiate

    - by Jeff
I had 11.10 and tried to upgrade recently, via the installer pop-up reminder. Afterwards it would not boot, citing an issue with the kernel. So I've setup a 12.04 installation USB, which appears to work fine. The problem is it doesn't provide an upgrade option, just format and install or install alongside the current broken kernel. I believe I should be able to still get the information from the broken OS after installing alongside, but if there is a way to fix this more directly that would be preferable.

  • Newly compiled (patched with -ck) 3.3 kernel won't boot up

    - by Shiki
Screen is garbled. Reaaaally garbled. Like some sort of scrambling image from a movie. I can upload some pictures if needed. To be short with the description. Here is my 3.3 + ck .config file: http://pastebin.com/aP2F9RcH The dmesg log of the failed kernel: http://pastebin.com/esc2Rtka The computer is a ThinkPad T500 laptop. I have selected everything needed for the computer (as far as I can tell, but check the .config). The normal generic Ubuntu kernel boots and works perfect!

  • Upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04, must maintain minimum kernel 2.6.38

    - by Steve
I have a machine running 10.04 and am using BTRFS with lzo compression. I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.38 to enable this (using a PPA). I have my /home folder on a separate (4 TB) BTRFS drive. / is on ext4. My only complaint with this setup is that it uses the old BTRFS tools. How can I upgrade first to 10.10, then 11.04 as required, when 10.10 uses 2.6.35? I don't want it to crash/choke on mounting /home. Will it just let me keep booting the newer kernel I have while upgrading?

  • Random process hangs after clean install

    - by Toshe
After installing fresh Kubuntu 11.04 Natty on my desktop PC, I experienced some issues with application and process hangs. There is also a problem with my USB 3 hard disk. These sort of problems did not happen on Kubuntu 10.10 installed on the same PC (on separate partition). The hangs manifest themselves with kernel log messages like these: [ 960.480151] INFO: task amarok:2505 blocked for more than 120 seconds. • 64-bit linux kernel only seeing 3 of 4GB after upgrade...

    - by Blaine
    Hey everyone. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit on my macbook. I had 2GB of ram before, and everything ran great. I just upgraded to 2x2GB (4GB), but my system only sees 3GB of it. OS X, which I am dual booting, sees all 4GB. Also, my video performance is incredibly lacking. Before the upgrade my compiz benchmark was full at 80fps, and now it is at 22fps with very choppy window dragging. Has anyone ever heard of this on a 64-bit kernel? I just don't quite understand what could be the issue. 10$ uname -a Linux macbook 2.6.28-15-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 18 19:25:34 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2953 1031 1921 0 114 427 -/+ buffers/cache: 489 2463 Swap: 7812 0 7812 9$ lsmod Module Size Used by i915 77960 2 drm 123232 3 i915 binfmt_misc 18572 1 ppdev 16904 0 btusb 21784 2 bridge 63776 0 stp 11140 1 bridge bnep 22912 2 vboxnetadp 109356 0 vboxnetflt 116972 0 vboxdrv 1721612 1 vboxnetflt uvcvideo 69640 0 compat_ioctl32 18304 1 uvcvideo videodev 45184 2 uvcvideo,compat_ioctl32 v4l1_compat 23940 2 uvcvideo,videodev lp 19588 0 parport 49584 2 ppdev,lp snd_hda_intel 557492 3 snd_pcm_oss 52352 0 snd_mixer_oss 24960 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm 99464 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss arc4 10240 2 snd_seq_dummy 11524 0 ecb 11392 2 snd_seq_oss 41984 0 snd_seq_midi 15744 0 snd_rawmidi 33920 1 snd_seq_midi snd_seq_midi_event 16512 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi snd_seq 66272 6 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event ath9k 310584 0 snd_timer 34064 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq snd_seq_device 16276 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq mac80211 251528 1 ath9k iTCO_wdt 21712 0 iTCO_vendor_support 12420 1 iTCO_wdt joydev 20992 0 video 29204 0 snd 78920 15 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device applesmc 37700 0 output 11648 1 video soundcore 16800 1 snd pcspkr 11136 0 cfg80211 43680 1 mac80211 appletouch 19972 0 isight_firmware 11520 0 input_polldev 12688 1 applesmc intel_agp 39408 1 snd_page_alloc 18704 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm led_class 13064 2 ath9k,applesmc hid_apple 15872 0 usbhid 47040 0 ohci1394 42164 0 ieee1394 108288 1 ohci1394 sky2 63364 0 fbcon 49792 0 tileblit 11264 1 fbcon font 17024 1 fbcon bitblit 14464 1 fbcon softcursor 10368 1 bitblit Some information from dmesg: [ 795.820163] ACPI: EC: GPE storm detected, transactions will use polling mode [ 1762.709516] [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6 [ 1763.078130] [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6 [ 2362.760889] [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6 [ 2416.352084] ACPI: EC: missing confirmations, switch off interrupt mode. • Mac OSX: Passing a link to file from user process to kernel module.

    - by Inso Reiges
Hello, I need to pass a link to file from a user process to the OSX kernel driver. By link i mean anything that uniquely identifies a file on the local filesystem. I need that link to do I/O on that file in kernel. The most obvious solution seems to pass a file name and use a VFS vnode lookup. However i noticed, that Apple Disk Images helper process passes a raw data array for image-path property to driver when attaching a disk image file: <2f 56 6f 6c 75 6d 65 73 2f 73 74 6f 72 61 67 65 2f 74 65 73 74 32 2e 64 6d 67> What is that diskimages-helper passes to the kernel driver? Some serialized type perhaps? If yes, what type is it and how can i use it?

  • Why do operating systems do low level stuff in C and C++? Why not just C++?

    - by Cole Johnson
On the Wikipedia page for Windows, it states the Windows is written in Assembly for the bootloader and task switcher, and C and C++ for kernel routines. This confuses me because AFAIK, you can call C++ functions from an extern "C"'d block as C++ is just C with extra features (all of which can be rewritten in C if you wanted to AFAIK). I can get using C for the kernel functions so pure C apps can use them (like printf and such), but if they can just be wrapped in an extern "C " block, then why code in C? So my question is: Why would a kernel be written in both C and C++ instead of just C++

  • unseen/unknown function definition in linux source

    - by Broncha
Can any one please explain this piece of code I found in the linux kernel source. I see a lots of code like this in linux and minix kernel but dont seem to find what it does (even if C compilers support that kind of function definition) /* IRQs are disabled and uidhash_lock is held upon function entry. * IRQ state (as stored in flags) is restored and uidhash_lock released * upon function exit. */ static void free_user(struct user_struct *up, unsigned long flags) __releases(&uidhash_lock) { uid_hash_remove(up); spin_unlock_irqrestore(&uidhash_lock, flags); key_put(up->uid_keyring); key_put(up->session_keyring); kmem_cache_free(uid_cachep, up); } I cannot find out if this reference __releases(&uidhash_lock) before the parenthesis starts is allowed OR supported. (It sure is supported as it is in the linux kernel)

  • I have neither grub.conf nur menu.lst

    - by chris
Hi, I just compiled my own kernel for the first time. At it is written in a tutorial I now want to check whether the kernel got written into the grub.conf file. Well, I did not find a grub.conf file. So I googled. Answer: Ubuntu does not have grub.conf, but rather has a menu.lst (also stored in /boot/grub). So I looked for that file. But I don't have that one either. So now the question: Where is my GRUB data stored? Im using Ubuntu 10.10 with Kernel 2.6.35-27

  • Ubuntu 12.04 booting into busybox after update

    - by Victor Alejandro Martinez
Every time the system updates the kernel from 3.5.0-24 to 3.5.0-34 I get dropped into a busybox prompt at boot, but I can boot just fine using the previous kernel. I've tried all I know. I did a fsck.ext3 -f /dev/sdb2 using the alternate install CD. I've used boot-repair but to avail, I've checked for bad blocks but there are none. Should I purge the new kernel and use the old one instead? This is the output from boot-repair the first time, no purge. http://paste.ubuntu.com/5809230/

  • Why ubuntu does not use the kernels installed by automatic update?

    - by Guillaume Coté
I used the script describe in this question to list the kernel installed on the computer : How do I to remove or hide old kernel versions, to clean up the boot menu? In the 3.2.0, I have 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 41, 43, 44, 45 and 48. I would expect to be running 3.2.0-48 after a reboot, but I am still running 3.2.0-32. Why the kernels installed by auto update are not used? [I am running 12.04 LTS] /boot/grub/menu.lst was modified for the last time June 16 2013, it contains 3.2.0-32-generic 2.6.32-45-generic 2.6.32-44-generic 2.6.32-43-generic A recovery for each of those and a memtest. I would have expected the kernel between 3.2.0-33 to 3.2.0-48 to be in this file before 3.2.0-32.
