• How can I change the color of the pane separator for my Ambiance theme modification?

  I am currently messing around with Ambiance, trying to give Nautilus a dark sidebar (because I think it looks much better that way, especially with the current look having the dark-colored breadcrumbs clashing horribly with the light-colored sidebar). I have zero experience and knowledge of how to create GTK+ themes, and I couldn't find any documentation online, so I just made a copy of the folder for Ambiance under /usr/share/themes, renamed it "Ambiance Dark Sidebar" and just started messing with color values. As shown below, I found the value in nautilus.css needed to be tweaked to create the dark sidebar, but there is still one part that stubbornly stays light gray. This is the pane separator, and I want to change it so it matches the rest better (marked in red). Does anyone know what I need to do to change the color of this part so it matches the rest of the sidebar better? I already know from seeing themes like Adwaita Dark that this should be possible, but even after poking around in that I didn't find anything that seemed to help. • apt-get failed install of libg15, all package management is failing

  I was trying to get my Logitech G510 keyboard's back-lights working so I went into the Synaptic Package Manager and marked LibG15, G15daemon, and all the other associated packages. Synaptic reported a failed install. Now all Package management is failing due to libg15 being "halfway installed." • Ideal data structure/techniques for storing generic scheduler data in C#

  I am trying to implement a generic scheduler object in C# 4 which will output a table in HTML. Basic aim is to show some object along with various attributes, and whether it was doing something in a given time period. The scheduler will output a table displaying the headers: Detail Field 1 ....N| Date1.........N I want to initialise the table with a start date and an end date to create the date range (ideally could also do other time periods e.g. hours but that isn't vital). I then want to provide a generic object which will have associated events. Where an object has events within the period I want a table cell to be marked E.g. Name Height Weight 1/1/2011 2/1/2011 3/1/20011...... 31/1/2011 Ben 5.11 75 X X X Bill 5.7 83 X X So I created scheduler with Start Date=1/1/2011 and end date 31/1/2011 I'd like to give it my person object (already sorted) and tell it which fields I want displayed (Name, Height, Weight) Each person has events which have a start date and end date. Some events will start and end outwith but they should still be shown on the relevant date etc. Ideally I'd like to have been able to provide it with say a class booking object as well. So I'm trying to keep it generic. I have seen Javasript implementations etc of similar. What would a good data structure be for this? Any thoughts on techniques I could use to make it generic. I am not great with generics so any tips appreciated.

• How do I (quickly) let people know that software I am providing for free is not abandon-ware?

  As an independent, individual programmer: How do I let people very quickly know that I have not abandoned the software I've written and given away for free? That I am putting in the effort required to maintain and support my software to a professional level? When software written by one or two developers is available for free, or marked as open-source, usually the default assumption is that it's abandon-ware. This is usually a safe assumption - check out the answers to this question if you doubt it: Why do programmers write applications and then make them free?. There are lots of programmers who provide free and/or open-source tools which are not abandon-ware, though. If we're talking about large companies, ie Google, there's no real problem telling the difference between supported, live tools and software, and those which are abandoned or discontinued. A lively git repository isn't quick - users will have to be savvy enough to understand the repository and know where to look for it. Consistent marketing and community management take more time and effort than I can put in on my own. Also, if my software becomes popular/successful, I assume those will grow on their own, and be supported by power users in the community.

• Lost WiFi after 12.10 upgrade

  I received my new Dell Vostro 2420 last week, and just got around to upgrading from 11.10 to 12.10. Unfortunately, like many others (after researching the issue), I no longer have WiFi. I have tried every sudo command given that worked for others, and still can't get my wireless to function. I am new to Linux, so any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance! Edit: I can connect via ethernet, just not via wifi. • Go/Obj-C style interfaces with ability to extend compiled objects after initial release

  I have a conceptual model for an object system which involves combining Go/Obj-C interfaces/protocols with being able to add virtual methods from any unit, not just the one which defines a class. The idea of this is to allow Ruby-ish open classes so you can take a minimalist approach to library development, and attach on small pieces of functionality as is actually needed by the whole program. Implementation of this involves a table of methods marked virtual in an RTTI table, which system functions are allowed to add to during module initialization. Upon typecasting an object to an interface, a Go-style lookup is done to create a vtable for that particular mapping and pass it off so you can have comparable performance to C/C++. In this case, methods may be added /afterwards/ which were not previously known and these new methods allow newer interfaces to be satisfied; while I like this idea because it seems like it would be very flexible (disregarding the potential for spaghetti code, which can happen with just about any model you use regardless). By wrapping the system calls for binding methods up in a set of clean C-compatible calls, one would also be able to integrate code with shared libraries and retain a decent amount of performance (Go does not do shared linking, and Objective-C does a dynamic lookup on each call.) Is there a valid use-case for this model that would make it worth the extra background plumbing? As much as this Dylan-style extensibility would be nice to have access to, I can't quite bring myself to a use case that would justify the overhead other than "it could make some kinds of code more extensible in future scenarios."

• Track sales and commission with third-party tool

  I have a clothing website where I link to various clothing retailers. I have reached an agreement with one of the retailers whereby they will pay a commission to us for every sale they make from traffic that was referred by our site. I need a mechanism for tracking how much commission should be paid to us, that involves as little work as possible to implement from their side. We both have Google Analytics. Option 1: They record a goal in their GA account whenever someone makes a purchase on their site. They see how many completed goals are marked as referral traffic from our site and calculate commission accordingly. The problem with this is that the whole process of calculating and paying commission will be manual. They will need to frequently check how many sales were generated by referral traffic from our site, and probably we will have to chase them for commission payments. Also - since we won't have access to their GA data - we will need to trust that they report all sales accurately. Option 2: Sign them up to an affiliate network like Commission Junction or Google's Affiliate Network, and connect to them through this network. The problem with this solution is that it seems too heavyweight; ideally we don't want to ask a retailer to go through the whole sign up process just to deal with us and pay us commission. I am assuming that there must be some lightweight service that tracks the number of sales by one site and pays commission accordingly to the other site, where the sign up and installation procedure is simple and fast.

• What are the hard and fast rules for Cache Control?

  Confession: sites I maintain have different rules for Cache Control mostly based on the default configuration of the server followed up with recommendations from the Page Speed & Y-Slow Firefox plug-ins and the Network Resources view in Google's Speed Tracer. Cache-Control is set to private/public depending on what they say to do, ETag's/Last-Modified headers are only tinkered with if Y-Slow suggests there is something wrong and Vary-Accept-Encoding seems necessary when manually gziping files for Amazon CloudFront. When reading through the material on the different options and what they do there seems to be conflicting information, rules for broken proxies and cargo cult configurations. Any of the official information provided by the analysis tools mentioned above is quite inaccessible as it deals with each topic individually instead of as a unified strategy (so there is no cross-referencing of techniques). For example, it seems to make no sense that the speed analysis tools rate a site with ETag's the same as a site without them if they are meant to help with caching. What are the hard and fast rules for a platform agnostic Cache Control strategy? EDIT: A link through Jeff Atwood's article explains Caching in superb depth. For the record though here are the hard and fast rules: If the file is Compressed using GZIP, etc - use "cache-control: private" as a proxy may return the compressed version to a client that does not support it (the browser cache will hold files marked this way though). Also remember to include a "Vary: Accept-Encoding" to say that it is compressible. Use Last-Modified in conjunction with ETag - belt and braces usage provides both validators, whilst ETag is based on file contents instead of modification time alone, using both covers all bases. NOTE: AOL's PageTest has a carte blanche approach against ETags for some reason. If you are using Apache on more than one server to host the same content then remove the implicitly declared inode from ETags by excluding it from the FileETag directive (i.e. "FileETag MTime Size") unless you are genuinely using the same live filesystem. Use "cache-control: public" wherever you can - this means that proxy servers (and the browser cache) will return your content even if the rest of the page needs HTTP authentication, etc.

• Collision checking problem on a Tiled map

  I'm working on a pacman styled dungeon crawler, using the free oryx sprites. I've created the map using Tiled, separating the floor, walls and treasure in three different layers. After importing the map in libGDX, it renders fine. I also added the player character, for now it just moves into one direction, the player cannot control it yet. I wanted to add collision and I was planning to do this by checking if the player's new position is on a wall tile. Therefore as you can see in the following code snippet, I get the tile type of the appropriate tile and if it is not zero (since on that layer there is nothing except the wall tile) it is a collision and the player cannot move further: final Vector2 newPos = charController.move(warrior.getX(), warrior.getY()); if(!collided(newPos)) { warrior.setPosition(newPos.x, newPos.y); warrior.flip(charController.flipX(), charController.flipY()); } [..] private boolean collided(Vector2 newPos) { int row = (int) Math.floor((newPos.x / 32)); int col = (int) Math.floor((newPos.y / 32)); int tileType = tiledMap.layers.get(1).tiles[row][col]; if (tileType == 0) { return false; } return true; } The character only moves one tile with this code: If I reduce the col value by two it two more tiles. I think the problem will be around indexing, but I'm totally confused because the zero in the coordinate system of libGDX is in the bottom left corner of the screen, and I don't know the tiles array's indexing is similair or not. Here are some photos of me doing the soldering. Software engineers should not be afraid of a little soldering work. It's all good. See: Skynet Big Data Demo (Part 2) One thing to watch out for when you open the remote is that there may be some glue covering the contact points. Make sure to use an Exacto knife or small screwdriver to scrape away any glue or non-conductive material covering each place where you need to solder. And after you are done with your soldering and you gave the solder enough time to cool, make sure all your connections are marked so that you know which wire goes where. Give each wire a very light tug to make sure it is soldered correctly and is making good contact. There are lots of videos on the Web to help you if this is your first time soldering. • How can I mark a pixel in the stencil buffer?

  I never used the stencil buffer for anything until now, but I want to change this. I have an idea of how it should work: the gpu discards or keeps rasterized pixels before the pixel shader based on the stencil buffer value on the given position and some stencil operation. What I don't know is how would I mark a pixel in the stencil buffer with a specific value. For example I draw my scene and want to mark everything which is drawn with a specific material (this material could be looked up from a texture so ideally I should mark the pixel in the pixel shader), so that later when I do some post processing on my scene I would only do it on the marked pixels. I didn't find anything on the internet besides how to set up a stencil buffer and explaining the different stencil operations. I was expecting to find some System-Value semantics like SV_Depth to write to in the pixel shader (because the stencil buffer shares the same resource with the depth buffer in D3D11), but there is no such thing on MSDN. So how should I do this? If I am misunderstanding something please help me clear that up.

• Why can't I run any Android NDK commands?

  I had been running Mint 12 before, and everything was working there. I switched to Ubuntu 12.04, and now I am very frustrated. When I run ndk-build, I get /home/buzz/ndk/prebuilt/linux-x86/bin/make: not found So, I changed to that folder directly. When I type in ./make, I get bash: ./make: No such file or directory Typing ls clearly shows the file where I am! I did some hacking around (pointing to external tools) to get past each error (just to experiment), and I ran into this! /home/buzz/ndk/toolchains/arm-linux-androideabi-4.6/prebuilt/linux-x86/bin/arm-linux-androideabi-gcc: Command not found Why? Why are all these files unable to be found? As I said above, this was all working just fine in another distro. What changed? What's extra frustrating is that if I push TAB to auto-complete, it works. So, the file is clearly there (and clearly marked with execution permissions). So, why can't it be found?

• TechEd 2012: Windows Phone Exam Cram

  Usually speakers take offence if you wear headphones in their talk.  For the exam cram session it was a requirement.  This was because it was a cubical walled room with an open top next to a study hall. While no-one was going to come out of this session ready to take a test, I am glad that I took the time to attend it.  There was a fair amount of material that you should know already if you have ever taken a certification test before.  This was packed around a mix of key concepts and some tidbits that marked where some of the pitfalls are for this particular test.  The biggest warning was that the test is based on Windows Phone 7.0 and not Mango meaning that you have to be careful that you don’t answer a question in the wrong context.   I was working on a data view web part recently and i had  to filter the data based on dates.Since the data source was web services i couldn't use  the Offset which i blogged about earlier.When using web services to pull data in sharepoint designer you would have to use xpath.So for example this is the soap that populates the rows<xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/soap:Envelope/soap:Body/ddw1:GetListItemsResponse/ddw1:GetListItemsResult/ddw1:listitems/rs:data/z:row/>But you would need to add some predicate [] and filter the date nodes.So you can do something like this (marked in red)<xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/soap:Envelope/soap:Body/ddw1:GetListItemsResponse/ddw1:GetListItemsResult/ddw1:listitems/rs:data/z:row[ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@ows_Created),1033,'yyyyMMdd') &gt;= ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(substring-after($fd,'#')),1033,'yyyyMMdd')]"/>For the filtering to work you need to have the date formatted  above as yyyyMMdd.One more thing you must have noticed is the $fd variable.This variable is created by me creating a calculated column in the list so something like this [Created]-2So basically that the xpath is doing is get me data only when the Created date  is greater than or equal to the Created date -2 which is 2 date less than the created date.Also not that when using web services in sharepoint designer and try to use the default filtering you won't get to see greater tha or less than in the option list comparison.:(Hope this helps.

  I'm still working on my window cleaning game from one of my previous questions I marked a contribution as my answer, but after all this time I can't get it to work and I have to many questions about this so I decided to ask some more about it. As a sequel on my mentioned previous question, my question to you is: How can I check whether or not a bitmapData contains non transparent pixels? Subquestion: Is this possible when the masked image is a movieclip? Shouldn't I use graphics instead? Information I have: A dirtywindow movieclip on the bottom layer and a clean window movieclip on layer 2(mc1) on the layer above. To hide the top layer(the dirty window) I assign a mask to it. • Which Ubuntu linux kernel tree matches my installed kernel?

  Answering a recent question, and before that, trying to see if a patch which is fundamental for my machine had been included in a kernel release, I have found the following problem: How can I match the kernel version I have for my kernel, which is [:~] % uname -a Linux samsung-romano 3.13.0-29-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 4 21:00:20 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux with the exact kernel source, which I suppose should be stored in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/linux.git;a=summary? In that page there are quite a lot of tags, for example: But none of them correspond to 3.13.0-29 which is my running kernel right now. The mapping should be in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Dev/ExtendedStable, where it is said that the 3.13 Ubuntu kernel is based on 3.13.11 --- I think. But from there to finding the tree I have installed is not straightforward. Notice: I know I can install the kernel source corresponding with my installed kernel. But I do not want to install them; I would like ti have a pointer to the git tree to be able to browse it online (and check for commits, patches, etc.). The best options seems to go to linux3.13-y.review or linux3.13-y.queue, but I am unable to find where this tree are marked for the release - if I understand well the policy, in -review the patches are accumulated for testing, and in -queue accumulated for the next minor release/update --- but I am unable to find the exact release tree. I mean, a tag equivalent to 3.13.0-29 was cut here.

• Why not commit unresolved changes?

  In a traditional VCS, I can understand why you would not commit unresolved files because you could break the build. However, I don't understand why you shouldn't commit unresolved files in a DVCS (some of them will actually prevent you from committing the files). Instead, I think that your repository should be locked from pushing and pulling, but not committing. Being able to commit during the merging process has several advantages (as I see it): The actual merge changes are in history. If the merge was very large, you could make periodic commits. If you made a mistake, it would be much easier to roll back (without having to redo the entire merge). The files could remain flagged as unresolved until they were marked as resolved. This would prevent pushing/pulling. You could also potentially have a set of changesets act as the merge instead of just a single one. This would allow you to still use tools such as git rerere. So why is committing with unresolved files frowned upon/prevented? Is there any reason other than tradition?

• 404s on password protected content

  I'm new to WordPress and SEO, generally, but we've been running into problems with our site that don't seem to make sense to me. The problem is that our editor likes to schedule posts and/or mark them private until she is ready to make them public, but somehow Google is crawling these posts and getting 404s (because they are password protected). How does Google know they exist in the first place? I checked the sitemap.xml file and don't see a record of the post. One of the offending posts was marked public, but is scheduled for a future date. Could that have something to do with it? I've tried to Google the answer, and I came up with a good amount of reassurance that this won't hurt the site, but I'm still wondering how it's happening in the first place. It's hard because I don't know exactly what the editor's workflow is. Is it possible she's posting publicly first and then revising it to be private only after it's too late? Does anyone know how Google finds WordPress URLs it shouldn't have access to?

• design an extendible and pluggable business logic flow handler in php

  I am working on a project where I need to allow a pluggable way to inject business processes in the normal data flow. eg There is an ordering system. The standard flow of the application is A consumer orders an item. Pays for it and card is authorized. Admin captures the payment. Order is marked as complete and item is shipped. But this process may vary (extra steps in between) for different clients. Say a client would need to validate the location of the consumer before he is presented with a credit card form, OR his policies might require some other processes in between. I am thinking of using State Pattern for processing orders, saving the current state of the order in database, and initializing the state of order from the saved state. I would also need some mechanism, where a small plugin would be able to inject business specific states in the state machine. Am I thinking the right way? Are there already implemented patterns for this kind of situation? I am working with Codeigniter and basically this would mean for me, to redirect to proper controller according to the current state of the order. Like, if the state of the order is unconfirmed then redirect the user to details page and then change the state to pending. If some client would need to do some validation, then register an intermediate state between unconfirmed and pending Please suggest.

• Ubuntu black screen after Installation of 12.10 Live USB

  My computer was made in 2004, but I'm sure it doesn't matter since it's a durable machine. So recently, I decided to breathe new life to it with Linux. I tried Lubuntu 12.10, Nope. Black screen after install. So I tried Ubuntu 12.10 when I gave up, and same exact thing. Except, this time I'm fighting for it, since Ubuntu is the best OS I've ever seen. So back on-topic, when I start the installation, it says that something is already mounted (Sda or something of the sorts) So I just figure that it's the Live USB I'm using. So I let it ignore it, and move on. The rest of the installation goes smooth, all looks fine. Then I get to the screen with the introductory to Ubuntu. Meanwhile, it's still installing, but finishing up. I'm not sure if the install actually finishes, but I do know that after a bit, the screen goes back to the desktop. The install closes and I'm back at the desktop, and the cursor is showing the "loading" symbol, as if it were still working. Then the screen goes black, with the same cursor. After that, nothing. I left it over night like that thinking it was doing something, in the morning it was still black with the cursor circling or whatever. So what could be causing this? One concern I have is that I have a Nvidia graphics card (7300 GT). I heard that Nvidia isn't compatible with Linux? I did notice that it was marked as unreconigsed by Ubuntu, so is that the problem perhaps?
