  • New Whitepaper: Planning Your E-Business Suite Upgrade from Release 11i to 12.1

    - by Steven Chan
[Editor:  This guest article has been contributed by Anne Carlson]Premier Support for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i ends in November 2010.  At Oracle OpenWorld last fall, it was standing room only at several EBS upgrade sessions.  Responding to the increased interest in upgrades, I set to work on a new Release 12.1 version of our popular whitepaper, Best Practices for Adopting E-Business Suite, Release 12 (Note 580299.1). Here is that new whitepaper, which features the latest Release 12.1 upgrade planning advice from Oracle's Support, Consulting, Development and IT organizations:Planning Your E-Business Suite Upgrade from 11i to Release 12.1 (Note 987516.1)The paper is directed at IT professionals who are planning, managing, or running a Release 12.1 upgrade project.  After briefly reviewing the Release 12.1 value proposition, the paper launches into specific upgrade planning tips to help you:

  • 'Unblock' / 'Yellow Out' game questions

    - by pimvdb
I would very much like to build a game that is known as 'Unblock' or 'Yellow Out'. It is a puzzle game in which the task is to move a car out of a parking space by moving other cars in certain directions. These are links where the game can be played: Yellow Out Unblock My questions concerning this game are: Is this game actually licensed? I see it's available under two names (perhaps even more). Does this mean the game idea can be used freely? Is there an article about it? I have not been able to find it on Wikipedia. I would like to gather some information about the game so as to understand more details of it. Is there some database with puzzles available? I can just check the puzzles of existing games, but that's a pain because I have to finish a level to get on to the following one. I was wondering whether there is a general list of puzzles somewhere. Thanks!

  • Reminder: Premier Support for EBS 11i ends November 2010

    - by Steven Chan
Apps sysadmins are going to have a busy year.  If you're still running your E-Business Suite environment on the 10gR2 database, I hope that you're aware that Premier Support for 10.2 ends in July 2010.  But if you're still on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i version 11.5.10, the impending end of Premier Support this year on November 30, 2010 is even more important.  Support windows for Oracle E-Business Suite are listed here:Oracle Lifetime Support > "Lifetime Support Policy: Oracle Applications" (PDF)Premier Support runs for five years from a product's first release.  In the case of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10, that window was increased to six years in recognition of the challenges that some of you face in justifying major upgrades in today's economy. Here's a graphical summary of the EBS 11.5.10's support stages:First year of Extended Support fees for EBS 11.5.10 waivedRegular readers may recall that fees for the first year of Extended Support for EBS 11.5.10 are waived.  There is nothing that customers need to do to remain fully supported other than keep your support contracts current.  Higher fees for Extended Support will start December 1, 2011 for most platforms.  This is formally documented here:Technical Support Policies > "Oracle's Technical Support Policies" (PDF)

  • WebCenter .NET Accelerator - Microsoft SharePoint Data via WSRP

    - by john.brunswick
Platforms in the enterprise will never be homogeneous. As much as any vendor would enjoy having their single development or application technology be exclusively adopted by customers, too much legacy, time, education, innovation and vertical business needs exist to make using a single platform practical. JAVA and .NET are the two industry application platform heavyweights and more often than not, business users are leveraging various systems in their day to day activities that incorporate applications developed on top of both platforms. BEA Systems acquired Plumtree Software to complete their "liquid" view of data, stressing that regardless of a particular source system heterogeneous data could interoperate at not only through layers that allowed for data aggregation, but also at the "glass" or UI layer. The technical components that allowed the integration at the glass thrive today at Oracle, helping WebCenter to provide a rich composite application framework. Oracle Ensemble and the Oracle .NET Application Accelerator allow WebCenter to consume and interact with the UI layers provided by .NET applications and a series of other technologies. The beauty of the .NET accelerator is that it can consume any .NET application and act as a Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) producer. I recently had a chance to leverage the .NET accelerator to expose a ASP .NET 2.0 (C#) application in the WebCenter UI (pictured above) and wanted to share a few tips to help others get started with similar integrations. I was using two virtual machines for the exercise - one with Windows Server 2003, running SharePoint and the other running WebCenter Spaces 11g. For my sample application data I ended up using SharePoint 2007 lists and calendars (MOSS 2007) to supply results using a .NET API for SharePoint.

  • OS Analytics with Oracle Enterprise Manager (by Eran Steiner)

    - by Zeynep Koch
Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center provides a feature called "OS Analytics". This feature allows you to get a better understanding of how the Operating System is being utilized. You can research the historical usage as well as real time data. This post will show how you can benefit from OS Analytics and how it works behind the scenes. The recording of our call to discuss this blog is available here: https://oracleconferencing.webex.com/oracleconferencing/ldr.php?AT=pb&SP=MC&rID=71517797&rKey=4ec9d4a3508564b3Download the presentation here See also: Blog about Alert Monitoring and Problem Notification Blog about Using Operational Profiles to Install Packages and other content Here is quick summary of what you can do with OS Analytics in Ops Center: View historical charts and real time value of CPU, memory, network and disk utilization Find the top CPU and Memory processes in real time or at a certain historical day Determine proper monitoring thresholds based on historical data Drill down into a process details Where to start To start with OS Analytics, choose the OS asset in the tree and click the Analytics tab. You can see the CPU utilization, Memory utilization and Network utilization, along with the current real time top 5 processes in each category (click the image to see a larger version):  In the above screen, you can click each of the top 5 processes to see a more detailed view of that process. Here is an example of one of the processes: One of the cool things is that you can see the process tree for this process along with some port binding and open file descriptors. Next, click the "Processes" tab to see real time information of all the processes on the machine: An interesting column is the "Target" column. If you configured Ops Center to work with Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, then the two products will talk to each other and Ops Center will display the correlated target from Cloud Control in this table. If you are only using Ops Center - this column will remain empty. The "Threshold" tab is particularly helpful - you can view historical trends of different monitored values and based on the graph - determine what the monitoring values should be: You can ask Ops Center to suggest monitoring levels based on the historical values or you can set your own. The different colors in the graph represent the current set levels: Red for critical, Yellow for warning and Blue for Information, allowing you to quickly see how they're positioned against real data. It's important to note that when looking at longer periods, Ops Center smooths out the data and uses averages. So when looking at values such as CPU Usage, try shorter time frames which are more detailed, such as one hour or one day. Applying new monitoring values When first applying new values to monitored attributes - a popup will come up asking if it's OK to get you out of the current Monitoring Policy. This is OK if you want to either have custom monitoring for a specific machine, or if you want to use this current machine as a "Gold image" and extract a Monitoring Policy from it. You can later apply the new Monitoring Policy to other machines and also set it as a default Monitoring Profile. Once you're done with applying the different monitoring values, you can review and change them in the "Monitoring" tab. You can also click the "Extract a Monitoring Policy" in the actions pane on the right to save all the new values to a new Monitoring Policy, which can then be found under "Plan Management" -> "Monitoring Policies". Visiting the past Under the "History" tab you can "go back in time". This is very helpful when you know that a machine was busy a few hours ago (perhaps in the middle of the night?), but you were not around to take a look at it in real time. Here's a view into yesterday's data on one of the machines: You can see an interesting CPU spike happening at around 3:30 am along with some memory use. In the bottom table you can see the top 5 CPU and Memory consumers at the requested time. Very quickly you can see that this spike is related to the Solaris 11 IPS repository synchronization process using the "pkgrecv" command. The "time machine" doesn't stop here - you can also view historical data to determine which of the zones was the busiest at a given time: Under the hood The data collected is stored on each of the agents under /var/opt/sun/xvm/analytics/historical/ An "os.zip" file exists for the main OS. Inside you will find many small text files, named after the Epoch time stamp in which they were taken If you have any zones, there will be a file called "guests.zip" containing the same small files for all the zones, as well as a folder with the name of the zone along with "os.zip" in it If this is the Enterprise Controller or the Proxy Controller, you will have folders called "proxy" and "sat" in which you will find the "os.zip" for that controller The actual script collecting the data can be viewed for debugging purposes as well: On Linux, the location is: /opt/sun/xvmoc/private/os_analytics/collect If you would like to redirect all the standard error into a file for debugging, touch the following file and the output will go into it: # touch /tmp/.collect.stderr   The temporary data is collected under /var/opt/sun/xvm/analytics/.collectdb until it is zipped. If you would like to review the properties for the Analytics, you can view those per each agent in /opt/sun/n1gc/lib/XVM.properties. Find the section "Analytics configurable properties for OS and VSC" to view the Analytics specific values. I hope you find this helpful! Please post questions in the comments below. Eran Steiner

  • [Blog] N'utilisez jamais try {} catch {}

C'est en somme le conseil donn? par Karl Seguin sur son blog. Pour lui, l'utilisation du try/catch pour g?rer une exception est une mauvaise pratique : "If an exception happens, you need to know about it. If a truly unexpected exception happens, you're better off (most of the time) crashing than letting the application continue (...) The best way to achieve both is let the exception go unhandled and log the exception in a global exception handler". Pour paraphraser une ?mission c?l?bre, ?a se discute ...

  • Monitor SQL Server Replication Jobs

    - by Yaniv Etrogi
The Replication infrastructure in SQL Server is implemented using SQL Server Agent to execute the various components involved in the form of a job (e.g. LogReader agent job, Distribution agent job, Merge agent job) SQL Server jobs execute a binary executable file which is basically C++ code. You can download all the scripts for this article here SQL Server Job Schedules By default each of job has only one schedule that is set to Start automatically when SQL Server Agent starts. This schedule ensures that when ever the SQL Server Agent service is started all the replication components are also put into action. This is OK and makes sense but there is one problem with this default configuration that needs improvement  -  if for any reason one of the components fails it remains down in a stopped state.   Unless you monitor the status of each component you will typically get to know about such a failure from a customer complaint as a result of missing data or data that is not up to date at the subscriber level. Furthermore, having any of these components in a stopped state can lead to more severe problems if not corrected within a short time. The action required to improve on this default settings is in fact very simple. Adding a second schedule that is set as a Daily Reoccurring schedule which runs every 1 minute does the trick. SQL Server Agent’s scheduler module knows how to handle overlapping schedules so if the job is already being executed by another schedule it will not get executed again at the same time. So, in the event of a failure the failed job remains down for at most 60 seconds. Many DBAs are not aware of this capability and so search for more complex solutions such as having an additional dedicated job running an external code in VBS or another scripting language that detects replication jobs in a stopped state and starts them but there is no need to seek such external solutions when what is needed can be accomplished by T-SQL code. SQL Server Jobs Status In addition to the 1 minute schedule we also want to ensure that key components in the replication are enabled so I can search for those components by their Category, and set their status to enabled in case they are disabled, by executing the stored procedure MonitorEnableReplicationAgents. The jobs that I typically have handled are listed below but you may want to extend this, so below is the query to return all jobs along with their category. SELECT category_id, name FROM msdb.dbo.syscategories ORDER BY category_id; Distribution Cleanup LogReader Agent Distribution Agent Snapshot Agent Jobs By default when a publication is created, a snapshot agent job also gets created with a daily schedule. I see more organizations where the snapshot agent job does not need to be executed automatically by the SQL Server Agent  scheduler than organizations who   need a new snapshot generated automatically. To assure this setting is in place I created the stored procedure MonitorSnapshotAgentsSchedules which disables snapshot agent jobs and also deletes the job schedule. It is worth mentioning that when the publication property immediate_sync is turned off then the snapshot files are not created when the Snapshot agent is executed by the job. You control this property when the publication is created with a parameter called @immediate_sync passed to sp_addpublication and for an existing publication you can use sp_changepublication. Implementation The scripts assume the existence of a database named PerfDB. Steps: Run the scripts to create the stored procedures in the PerfDB database. Create a job that executes the stored procedures every hour. -- Verify that the 1_Minute schedule exists. EXEC PerfDB.dbo.MonitorReplicationAgentsSchedules @CategoryId = 10; /* Distribution */ EXEC PerfDB.dbo.MonitorReplicationAgentsSchedules @CategoryId = 13; /* LogReader */ -- Verify all replication agents are enabled. EXEC PerfDB.dbo.MonitorEnableReplicationAgents @CategoryId = 10; /* Distribution */ EXEC PerfDB.dbo.MonitorEnableReplicationAgents @CategoryId = 13; /* LogReader */ EXEC PerfDB.dbo.MonitorEnableReplicationAgents @CategoryId = 11; /* Distribution clean up */ -- Verify that Snapshot agents are disabled and have no schedule EXEC PerfDB.dbo.MonitorSnapshotAgentsSchedules; Want to read more of about replication? • BCS with Visual Studio 2010

    - by Sahil Malik
Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). BCS or Business Connectivity services is a new and much improved, and much much enhanced version of what used to be BDC in SharePoint 2007. It allows external data to be surfaced inside of SharePoint. But compared to BDC, it comes with much richer a) Presentation options – in both server and client. b) Tooling support – In SharePoint designer and Visual Studio c) Connectivity options – in conjunction with the secure store service. In my newest article on BCS, I talk about BCS in SharePoint 2010 with Visual Studio 2010. Hope you like it. There is also a whole chapter (Chapter #9) devoted to BCS in my book. • Friday Spotlight - October 25, 2013

    - by Chris Kawalek
Happy Friday, everyone! Our spotlight this week is on a really cool technical tip on the Oracle Technology Network from Yuli Vasiliev called "How to Launch Linux Utilities from Oracle Database". From Yuli's introduction: "By wrapping a Linux utility in a script and using an external database table's preprocessor directive, you can launch the utility from within Oracle Database and have the utility's output be inserted into the external table. This allows you to do things such as query operating system data and then join it with data in Oracle Database." Head on over to OTN to read the full article. -Chris

  • Oracle Linux Friday Spotlight - November 8, 2013

    - by Chris Kawalek
Happy Friday, everyone! This week, I want to highlight a really wonderful resource, the Oracle Linux Wiki on wikis.oracle.com. You can find a lot of in-depth technical information there and it’s probably worthy of a bookmark to check in on occasionally. One of my favorite types of content on the wiki is the do it yourself hands on labs. We do these at in person events like Oracle OpenWorld and also online for our Virutal SysAdmin Days, and those are great because you can get real-time assistance if you have any questions. But, if you’re eager to learn more about Oracle Linux and don’t want to wait for one of those events, you can step through these labs in your own time. All of the information you need is on the wiki. We’ll see you next week! -Chris

  • Article on Disruptives vs [something else]? [closed]

    - by cmcculloh
Within the last week or so, there was a long article I saw linked to from Twitter that discussed innovation and disruptive programmers (and how today's disruptives become tomorrows... something else, I can't remember what they called them). It was about how a good manager is responsible for continually hiring disruptives and pitting the two against each other, because both are important. I read the article on my iPhone in the twitter ios app and forgot to star it or retweet it and now I can't find it anywhere. Anyone else read this article? Could you please give me the link?

  • Trimming articles' lengths in Google Reader

    - by Dov
I'm considering switching to Google Reader from Safari's RSS reader. One feature that I would absolutely miss from Safari is its Article Length slider it gives you for each feed, so you can choose to show more or less content. Is there any way to achieve this in Google Reader's Expanded view? PS I also posted this question on Google's Help forum here.

  • Printing All Changes to MediaWiki Series of Articles

    - by Jason
I have a MediaWiki site that I am responsible for. My management has recently asked to see the changes to a specific series of documents within MediaWiki (AKA, they basically want to see the output of the "changes" log). I was wondering two things: Is there a way to "nicely" print out this log so it easily shows the various changes that were made to a document. The information I need to print out is spread across multiple pages. Utilizing whatever information in step 1, is it possible to specify that I print out a subset of pages? (I'm talking about a lot of pages - ~135 of them or so.) Please let me know if you need clarification. Thanks!

  • Expensive HDMI Cables Make No Difference

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
While we’re no strangers to spreading the news that expensive HDMI cables are a ripoff, we’re happy to share yet another study that shows there’s zero difference between a $5 cable and a $95 one. Over at the British hardware review site Expert Reviews, they subjected a wide selection of HDMI cables to extensive tests in a bid to produce the end-all examination of whether or not a premium HDMI cable could actually produce a better signal. They used capture cards, pixel-by-pixel comparison of output, and other techniques to pick over individual frames until they ultimately reached the same conclusion everyone outside of the Monster sales staff had already reached: you’re getting absolutely no benefit to spending $100 on cable that can be had for under five bucks. Hi, My company have a 40 sites with different domains that some of their articles appears in my main website with reference to their source. Our articles write by high level processionals in the field that they write about - we also pay them high salary. In recent google algorithm change my main site rating down very seriously. What should we do to restore company main site google rating? our solution and ideas that not working well: rel="canonical" to source website (we already have it before google change without results) meta "original-source" but not have rating influence (we already have it before google change without results) Edit:: maybe we should delete rel="canonical" from main website articles that refer to our other small websites (because this articles in main website not indexed in google)? Thanks in advance

    Hello, I have a thing blog application, and I would like to shorten my routes. Here there are: Blog::Application.routes.draw do resources :categories do resources :articles do resources :comments end end A rake routes command build the following lines: GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"index"} category_article_comments POST /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"create"} new_category_article_comment GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/new(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"new"} GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"show"} PUT /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"update"} category_article_comment DELETE /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"destroy"} edit_category_article_comment GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id/edit(.:format) {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"edit"} GET /categories/:category_id/articles(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"index"} category_articles POST /categories/:category_id/articles(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"create"} new_category_article GET /categories/:category_id/articles/new(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"new"} GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"show"} PUT /categories/:category_id/articles/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"update"} category_article DELETE /categories/:category_id/articles/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"destroy"} edit_category_article GET /categories/:category_id/articles/:id/edit(.:format) {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"edit"} GET /categories(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"index"} categories POST /categories(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"create"} new_category GET /categories/new(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"new"} GET /categories/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"show"} PUT /categories/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"update"} category DELETE /categories/:id(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"destroy"} edit_category GET /categories/:id/edit(.:format) {:controller=>"categories", :action=>"edit"} As can be seen, each resource is ordered in a tree. So I believe that, it's could be interesting to simplify my routes such as for example: /categories/ => / /categories/:id => /:id /categories/:category_id/articles/ => /:category_id/articles /categories/:category_id/articles/:id => /:category_id/:id /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/ => /:category_id/:article_id/comments /categories/:category_id/articles/:article_id/comments/:id => /:category_id/:article_id/:id It's more DRY, is't it? :) Does Rails 3 provides a easy way to do so, with an HTTP verbs mapping to controller actions automatically? Thanks anyone.

    - by wonsungi
A few days ago, I saw this video for a screen capture application. I'm pretty sure I followed a link from Hacker News, possibly to a Life Hacker article. The video was very short, but demonstrated how the application could be used: The application was basically a movable/resize-able view port with a button. When the button is pressed, the contents of the view port are saved to an image (basically a screen capture.) The interesting thing is what you could do after that point. One of the specific examples from the video browsed to Google maps street view, grabbed a photo of an intersection, then scribbled notes about where to meet and where the restaurant was in colored "marker." Another example shown was grabbing a house layout from from CAD tool, then scribbling notes on it. The last part of the video showed several possible uses being scrolled through the application's view port. Now, it seemed it was very easy to share these images with other people because there was some type of integration, either with their own site and/or common social websites/chat services. The application was shown running on both Windows and Mac. edit: I think there was an iPhone app, as well. Anyone know what this application is? I tried searching Google, Hacker News, and Life Hacker already. It is not Jing.
