• Which Linux OS should I use?

  I have use Ubuntu 10.04 & 12.04 but my problem is disk space, I just have 4GB of HDD! awesome considering all hardware that exists nowadays! Notebook Asus eeePC 900 with 2Gb of ram, intel inside CPU. So, which is the best OS should I use? I need one that have no problems with compatibily also that's not be so old. I've tried some of lightly versions like Puppy, slax, LPS us army OS, Precise.... BUT I don't like any of them. What do you think about Debian or Linux Mint?

• Help recovering broken OS (permissions issue)

  (At the bottom there is an important update.) I was doing experiments in order to backup a remote account to my local system, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I'm not confident with duplicity and probably, due to wrong syntax, some local files have been replaced with remote files. This is just a supposition, I'm not sure this is the real cause of OS corruption. The corruption happened after experimenting with backups, so I think I did something wrong at this regard. I was aware there was a problem when I tried to access a command using sudo: $ sudo ls sudo: unable to open /etc/sudoers: Permission denied sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting sudo: unable to initialize policy plugin This is how /etc/sudoers looks like: $ ls -ald /etc/sudoers -r--r----- 1 root root 788 Oct 2 18:30 /etc/sudoers At this point I tried to reboot and now this is the message I get: The system is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself. I tried to follow the wizard to configure these settings, but without luck (the system prevents me going on when I press "Next"). The thing that makes me a bit less worried is that all the data on the disk seems readable and I'm able to access them using a live cd. I run memtest and RAM seems to be OK. Do you have any idea about how to recover my system? I'm very glad to provide further information, just let me know what info could be helpful. UPDATE. The issue is about wrong permissions and this is how I discovered: I mounted the root partition of the broken OS on /mnt/broken/ (live CD) and did ls /mnt/broken/. I got a permission denied error, while I expected to have the directory listing. I had to do sudo ls /mnt/broken/ and this worked. Thus without having root permission via sudo it's impossible to access the root of broken os. The current output of ls -ld /mnt/broken/ is: drwxr-x--- 29 1000 812 4096 2012-12-08 21:58 /mnt/broken Any thoughts on how to restore the old (working) set of permissions?

• Changing OS from Windows to Ubuntu

  So my computer has 2 operating systems on it, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. When I downloaded Ubuntu i had a ton of trouble booting windows 7 up again, then I downloaded GRUB and switched my default OS back to Windows. Sadly though, I'm trying to get into writing php with Apache. I Downloaded WAMP (windows Apache MySQL php) but for some reason, php doesn't work. I though i would try downloading LAMP (Linux apace MySQL php) but whenever I boot up my PC, I don't get a chance to enter the Ubuntu OS. How could I get back to running Ubuntu? Actually, it doesn't prompt me for a boot menu or anything. It just goes straight to the windows symbol

• Timing related crash when unloading a DLL?

  I know I'm reaching for straws here, but this one is a mystery... any pointers or help would be most welcome, so I'm appealing to those more intelligent than I: We have a crash exhibited in our release binaries only. The crash takes place as the binary is bringing itself down and terminating sub-libraries upon which it depends. Its ability to be reproduced is dependent on the machine- some are 100% reliable in reproducing the crash, some don't exhibit the issue at all, and some are in between. The crash is deep within one of the sublibraries, and there is a good likelihood the stack is corrupt by the time the rubble can be brought into a debugger (MSVC 2008 SP1) to be examined. Running the binary under the debugger prevents the bug from happening, as does remote debugging, as does (of all things) connecting to the machine via VNC. We have tried to install the Microsoft Driver Development Kit, and doing so also squelches the bug. What would be the next best place to look? What tools would be best in this circumstance? Does it sound like a race condition, or something else?

• How to populate a core data store programmatically?

  I have ran out of hairs to pull with a crash in this routine that populates a core data store from a 9000+ line plist file. The crash happened at the very end of the routine inside the call to [managedObjectContext save:&error]. While if I save after every object insertion, the crash doesn't happen. Of course, saving after every object insertion totally kills the performance (from less than a second to many minutes). I modified my code so that it saves every K insertions, and the crash happens as soon as K = 2. The crash is an out-of-bound exception for an NSArray: Serious application error. Exception was caught during Core Data change processing: *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (1) beyond bounds (1) with userInfo (null) Also maybe relevant, when the exception happen, my fetch result controller controllerDidChangeContent: delegate routine is in the call stack.   I installed Python 2.7 in my mac. The Python version is correct here. But when I try to easy_install some modules. The system will install the modules with python version 2.6 which are not able be imported to Python 2.7. And of course I can not do the functions I need in my code. • How do I reset the $PATH variable on Mac OS X?

  I've messed up my path variable, and now some apps that I run raise errors saying Command Not Found (error 127) for commands like 'date' and 'sleep'. These commands work fine when executed directly in the shell. I'm guessing this has something to do with a malformed $PATH variable, and need to know how to reset it. I've deleted the files ~/.bashrc , ~/.bash_profile, /etc/bash.bashrc, and ~/.bashrc and ~/.profile. What other files could hold my $PATH? Is there some simpler way to reset the Path than dig into the myriad files which could hold my path? Note, this path problem is only with my user. I made a test user on my system, and the path was fine, back to normal.

• OS X (10.6) Apache Sudden Death, Nginx not working either...

  Hi, I turned on my computer today and apache wasn't working. This is weird as its been working for the last 6 months without issue. The only thing I did which may of caused a problem, is I uninstalled a bunch of gems. This shouldn't be the issue though as apache doesn't rely on gems. I decided to give nginx a try to see if it would work and have the exact same issue. The symtoms are: I go to http://localhost and get the browsers default 404 page (not rendered by apache/nginx) No error is found anywhere (I checked all logs) Apache is rinning (also tried with Nginx) How can I debug this to find the root of the problem? I can't think of why this would be happening. I've tried repairing permissions in case this was the issue, apparently it wasn't. Everything was working the other day, and nothing changed in the apache config.   Hello, I am trying to learn python and am making a program that will output a script. I want to use os.path.join but am pretty confused (I know I am very bad at scripting/programming) See, according to the docs ( http://docs.python.org/library/os.path.html ) if I say os.path.join('c:', 'sourcedir') I get C:sourcedir as it's output. According to the docs, this is normal (right?) • Custom iPad keyboard backspace method last character crash

  I'm making a custom UI iPad keyboard app, and I'm doing something similar to this post for the backspace method: custom backspace button crashes iPhone app However, the app will always crash when I "backspace" for the last character in the UITextView. I know -substringToIndex won't work for an empty string, but I tried using a temporary mutable string then using -deleteCharactersInRange, and that crashed it too. I'm guessing the crash is due to me manually setting the -selectedRange property for the text view after deleting a character? But even if I do: textView.selectedRange = NSMakeRange(0, 0); the app will crash. Any ideas?

• Storage drives is causting system crash

  I'm running Centos 5.4 with 750GB(ntfs) and 2TB drives for storage. Originally I installed the 750, everything seemed fine and then I installed the 2TB drive with NTFS already partitioned. I noticed when I would copy a lot of videos it would crash (no mouse or response from server) about 20min into it. After doing some troubleshooting I noticed the 750 would also crash when doing the same task so I decided that NTFS may be the problem. I unmounted the 2TB drive and tried to partition and format it using ext2 but when using parted it would crash at this point "writing inode tables". Looking at the dmesg logs I believe this is the error "mtrr: type mismatch for e0000000,10000000 old: write-back new: write-combining". Any idea as to what could be causing this?

• When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

  I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too. At this point the machine completely locks up - I'm unable to even toggle Num Lock and have to hold in the power button for 5 seconds to kill it. Interestingly if I manage to launch some applications before it goes blank, they will usually crash... sometimes explorer.exe will crash too. When I reboot, the system is fine and stable. I've installed the latest graphics drivers and run memtest86+ for 6 passes (and counting) with no errors. The system specs are: CPU: Intel I7 2.66 @ 3.4GHz RAM: 6GB (3 * 2GB DDR3) HDD: 128GB Crucial M225 SSD Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Gfx: ATI Radeon Sapphire 5870 1GB Note: There are a few similar questions but I haven't found one that matches my symptoms

• Has anyone else experienced page fault crashes with Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro?

  I bought a Macbook Pro computer on Sept 3rd from MacMall. As I was using it to learn Snow Leopard (this is my first Mac, I am a long time Windows developer), it would crash every one or two hours. After calling Apple support, I dropped it off at the Apple store for diagnostic testing and repair. WhenI picked up the computer from Apple, they told me that it did not crash while they had it. They suspected a software problem, so they had done a fresh install of Snow Leopard for me. At home I went through the start up procedure with the newly installed Snow Leopard. Then I downloaded the iPhone SDK, and the computer crashed again while I was away waiting for the download to finish. I was using a USB mouse, which was the only device attached. No other software installed. I was presented with a dump that mentions terms like "panic", Kernel trap", and "page fault". Does anyone have any idea what this problem might be? I really can not use this MacBook under these circumstances.

• Help trying to figure out why IIS7 is crashing / locking up / denying connections

  Hi folks, I've got a pretty busy website that is running on a single web front end machine, on W2K8 + IIS7. Every now and then - eg. maybe monday at 3am or something, then a few days later .. some early morning time .. then nothing for 2 weeks ... etc - the website fails to respond to any client connections. ie. no one can connect to the website. I can remote desktop to the machine, etc no probs. I restart the app pool (the website is running in intergrated mode), still nothing. I try and get a crash dump of the process (it's around 600 mb maybe even more) ... that fails after about a min of trying (and i have plenty of HD space). The only way to fix this issue, is to manually stop the www service and then start it again. The stopping takes a while (a minute?) while starting is nearly instant. I'm at a loss to figure out what part of my code is causing this. At first, I thought it might be a stack overflow because of some error that might be going to the error page, which in turn errors .. rinse repeat boom. But i've had a look at the error page and it feels ok. So, I'm hoping someone might be able to help and say how I can correctly get a proper dump of the IIS process so i can then do some more autopsy on it. I would email Tess Ferrandez (the goddess of crash debuging) but I thought I'd try here before I spam her. Can anyone have any suggestions to how I can figure out how to start to debug this issue?

• Host system resets (crashes) when using VMWare or VirtualBox and 64-bit guest systems

  I have been trying to install virtual systems on VMWare for a while now and encountered strange behaviour from my PC. The behaviour is as follows: On "automatic" virtualization mode it either outputs a cryptic error message (can MAYBE give later, if I can reproduce) right on startup (before even the BIOS) or it resets the complete HOST system (blackscreen, bios...) If I install a Windows XP on it it works well on "binary translation" mode. If I try installing Linux on it, in "binary translation" mode it crashes 1 or 2 seconds after I hit enter on the GRUB selection screen (after the first page of kernel messages rolled in) Using VirtualBox it crashes right in the BIOS. It gave me a Bluescreen though! 0x00000101: CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT: a clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval NEWS: I tried VirtualBox again and it did not completely crash the computer this time. It gave me a critical error and a log file: http://pastebin.com/yKZSDs91 In conclusion, it will crash instantly if VT-x is activated. If not, it seemingly only crashed if I try to install something with 64 bits. Another update: Yes, it ONLY crashes when the guest is 64 bit! What I tried: Reinstalling Windows (my Windows installation was quite broken so it seemed natural. Didn't work though.) • Share Files and Folders and Internet between Guest OS and the Host in Hyper-V

  For those who are familiar with the VirtualPC, vmWare and VirtualBox environments will be quite irritated to find out that there is no direct way to share files from the Host machine to the Virtualized guest environment. This is a good thing from a CIO perspective because there’s excellent isolation for the virtualized environments this way, but for the developer junkies like us, this is an irritant, especially for those who have nuked their Windows 7 OS and installed Windows Server 2008 R2 for all the the SharePoint friendliness that it offers. Here’s a quick 5 minutes howto on Enabling Shared Folders and Internet Access for the Hyper-V images, for those who are still struggling with this. Step 1: Add a Virtual Network Adapter to your Guest OS For this, shut down the guest machine, go to its settings and add a Virtual Network Adapter as given in the images below     Step 2: Enable Virtual Networking in Hyper-V   Setting this up is very easy. In the Hyper-V Manager, under Actions (right panel), click the Virtual Network Manager. In the Virtual Network Manager in the Create virtual network panel, select Internal and click the Add button.        At this point if you open Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections you will be able to see the new Network Adapter, Now name it to something meaningful other than Network Adapter X. Now you can add this network to each of your virtual machines, but at this point, unless you assign an IP address in each connection, you won't be able to do much.   Step 3: Enable Internet Connection Sharing so that Guest OS’es also can connect to the internet. To enable ICS follow these steps: Click on the network icon in the tray of your host machine and select Network and Sharing Center. From there click Manage network connections. Select the network adapter that you use to access the Internet. Right click it and select Properties. In the properties dialog select the Sharing tab. On this tab check the box that says "Allow other network users..." and then set the Home networking connection to be the network adapter that was created above (now you see why I said to rename it to something useful). Now your virtual machines that have this network connection will automatically get an IP address and will be able to connect to the Internet (provided your internet connection is working). Because each adapter also gets an automatic address you can now share files and folders between your host and your virtual machines which is important since you can't just drag-and-drop files like you can with Virtual PC.   Step 4: Create a Shared Folder in the Host Machine and use it in the Guest machine. Right click on the folder that you want to Share and select ‘Share with\Specific People’ and specify who all can access the share. Open the Guest OS from Hyper V Navigate to Start > Run and type in the Address of the Share (Or Map a Drive to the Share) Bingo! The Share opens!! :)   Now you can share as many files and folders as you want between the host and the guest, and you also have internet access inside the Virtual machines. • GRUB 2 problem after Mac OS X update

  I have a MacBook Pro in dual boot Mac OS X / Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin). When I boot it I have a rEFIt menu, and I can chose between Mac OS X and Linux. A few days ago I have updated Mac OS X from 10.7 (Lion) to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) using a .dmg image provided by my company. Since then when I select Linux in rEFIt it says: No bootable device --insert boot disk and press any key I have tried going to rEFIt partitioning tool. This is what I got: As suggested in Mac OSX Mavericks update rEFIT broken I wanted to fix the issue the same way as AndrewM, but I don't have the option "MBR table must be updated". Then I booted on Ubuntu 12.04 CD, chose repair broken system, chose root patition /dev/sda6 as this is where my Ubuntu file system is. I got a shell, but I don't really know how to repair the poblem since if it was just Windows dual boot. A GRUB update would solve the issue, but here I don't know where the GRUB 2 is installed. Here are results from Parted, and it is a bit confusing for me as the Mac partition is the one with boot: As you can see the entry 1 is an EFI system partition and is the boot partition, so I wonder if I should install GRUB there or in sda6, which is the Ubuntu filesystem. I am not sure should I work on rEFIt shell or Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I don't remember where GRUB was before update. UPDATE: using same link above I have tried RoundSparrow hilltx answer and installed rEFInd, but the result is same.... still no bootable device when I select Linux. UPDATE 2: just used alternate CD again, mounted on /dev/sda6 and the ran update-grub. It seemed to wok and started listing all my kernels. But after rebooting several times still no bootable device when I select Linux in rEFInd. UDATE 3: Have tried to boot from Ubuntu cd and select "boot from first available filesystem. I got error and dropped to grub rescue shell.
