• Looking for a CDN

  Most of the CDN's that I've seen require you to upload your content in advance. I'm looking for a CDN that, upon receiving a request for a resource it hasn't seen, will contact my application server. If the application server returns something, it should be sent to the user and then cached in the CDN. If not, it should just return a 404. If the user requests an unexpired item, the CDN should just serve it without bothering my app server. Does anything like this exist? Is there a way to get Cloudfront to work like this?

• Why Is Another Domain Resolving To My IP Address?

  I'm not really sure if this is something that I should worry about... I'm currently renting a dedicated server which is hosting a website I've created. The domain of the website was registered with GoDaddy. After submitting a sitemap to Google several months ago, I've noticed that another domain name is resolving to my IP address. This means that every page on my website is actually accessible from another domain. As far as I can tell, the other domain name is meaningless to me, so I'm not sure if this is something I should worry about or not. Is this a residual DNS record from another site that is probably no longer in use? Is it important from the standpoint of either security or SEO? My website is a .com which will later serve e-commerce purposes. The other domain has a top-level domain of st. It's the first one of those that I've encountered. Many thanks in advance!

• Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed"

  After 10+ years of java/c# programming, I find myself creating either: abstract classes: contract not meant to be instantiated as-is. final/sealed classes: implementation not meant to serve as base class to something else. I can't think of any situation where a simple "class" (i.e. neither abstract nor final/sealed) would be "wise programming". Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed" ?   About once every couple of months I need to write a bit of code that does one thing if a particular string is found within an array of strings and something else if it is not ignoring differences in case.   I'm relatively new to Web Development especially when it comes to infrastructure. I have AngularJS application build and served by brunch.io locally. It uses rails-api JSON data. I'd like to deploy my angular application separately from rails server. For now, JS app is placde inside public directory of backend server and deployed together. It isn't elegant nor effective so I want to use some other hosting service. I was thinking about VPS where I could place both Angular and Ruby applications. I read about NodeJS or Nginx that can serve static files, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with these technologies. How is the best way to provide separate frontend and backend applications communicating with each other?

• What's the best way to version CSS and JS URLs?

  As per Yahoo's much-ballyhooed Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Site, we serve up static content from a CDN using far-future cache expiration headers. Of course, we need to occasionally update these "static" files, so we currently add an infix version as part of the filename (based on the SHA1 sum of the file contents). Thus: styles.min.css Becomes: styles.min.abcd1234.css However, managing the versioned files can become tedious, and I was wondering if a GET argument notation might be cleaner and better: styles.min.css?v=abcd1234 Which do you use, and why? Are there browser- or proxy/cache-related considerations that I should consider?

• Is it better to define all routes in the Global.asax than to define separately in the areas?

  I am working on a MVC 4 project that will serve as an API layer of a larger application. The developers that came before me set up separate Areas to separate different API requests (i.e Search, Customers, Products, and so forth). I am noticing that each Area has separate Area registration classes that define routes for that area. However, the routes defined are not area-specific (i.e. {controller}/{action}/{id} might be defined redundantly in a couple of areas). My instinct would be to move all of these route definitions to a common place like the Global.asax to avoid redundancy and collisions, but I am not sure if I am correct about that.

• How to include high resolution version of thumbnail

  I'm running a tube site that has a thumbnail for each post/video (running via Wordpress, 500k posts). When I first created the thumbnails they were a fairly large size, around 640px in width each and because of that I was seeing a lot of traffic from Google Images. After streamlining the site and resizing all of the thumbnails down to 170px rather than scaling them down I'm worried that Google isn't going to rank the images as high as they would be at a larger resolution, so is there a way to include the higher res versions and serve them to be indexed instead of the smaller ones?

• Hacked by our own hosting company!

  OK, so our hosting company decided to clone our site and database onto a new serve. Without our knowledge or permission they then edited our code to point to the new database. The old server was left running, still pointing at the original database. The DNS was changed to reflect the new IP address of the server. Obviously during the propagation customers were hitting both the new and old servers, resulting in orders coming in to both databases, sometimes being split between the two. We're now attempting to reconcile the two databases. The question I have is is it still hacking if it was done by your own hosting company?! I'm fairly sure they shouldn't have edited our code! If they had left it as it was the site would have stayed pointed at the original database and we wouldn't be in this mess! I'm thinking that legal advice is need but just wanted to know if anyone had ever come across this situation before?!

• Is it possible to preview arbitrary formats in Nautilus?

  I recently found out that Nautilus (Ubuntu 12.04 at least) can show thumbnails of files of non-image formats, for example (data grapher) grace files (.agr) shows a small version of the graph contained in its data. Obviously, there some library or script that is processing the file, making the image, and allowing nautilus to show a small version of it. This made me think that in principle any file that potentially can be processed into an image can serve as a Nautilus thumbnail. For example, a .tex file (which can be converted to .pdf) or a gnuplot script can be displayed as a thumbnail when possible. In the case of .tex file, the correspoding .pdf can be created by the command pdflatex file.tex. The question is, how can I tell Nautilus to create a thumbnail for an arbitrary format and how do I specify the commands to do so within Nautilus?

• When acquiring a domain name for product xyz, is it still important to buy .net and .org versions too?

  I am buying a domain name for service xyz and obviously I have bought .com in the first place. In the past it was automatic to also buy the .net and .org versions. However, I've been asking myself, why would I do that? To serve customers who mistakenly enter a different TLD? (Would someone accidentally do that these days?) To avoid a chance that competition will acquire those TLDs and play some dirty game on my customers? If there is a good reason, or a few, to buy the .net and .org versions these days I'd like to see those listed. Thanks.

• Sync active wallpaper/background between KDE and Gnome/Unity

  Is there solution using a utility or folder shortcuts that would keep the active desktop wallpaper/background the same in KDE and Gnome/Unity. (Changing the background in one desktop would also change the other desktop's wallpaper) I use both desktops because they both serve me better for different tasks, and i'd like to match LightDM login background for KDE as well. Regardless of that it would just be nice to accomplish this for personal consistency and unity. This is no heart breaker if it's not possible. It's just an extra couple of steps when I want to change my background. note: in KDE I disable ksplash

• International TLD's vs. duplicate content

  Hey all, I currently work at a pretty big website that has visitors from around the globe. My job is to help out on the SEO, and one thing we've been discussing lately is the use of international TLD's. The ones we use range between: (partly) translated websites like .es and .de that serve most of the content in the country's language non-translated (english) websites for non-english languages (due to a lack of translations) like .ro and .cz english websites for english speaking countries with localized TLD's (.co.nz, .co.uk) On one hand I really have the feeling this is causing a lot of duplicate content, especially for the last two categories of TLD's. On the other hand though it seems a lot like country-specific TLD's tend to score a lot better in that country's Google. Would it be advisable to keep on using these domains, or should we canonicalize them all to the .com version?

• CDN virtual subdomain causes duplicated content

  I have created a subdomain and a CNAME record which points to the domain root. The subdomain www.static.example.com is actually a copy of the entire website www.example.com and it is supposed to act as an CDN and serve static content in order to improve speed. However, all of my content can be accessed via subdomain aswell, so Google has indexed it all and now I am dealing with duplicated content. How could I deny access to crawlers for the subdomain baring in mind that I do not have different subfolder for subdomain, so I can't create a separate robots.txt file?

• Port numbers appended to anchor tags

  I've built a static site. Locally, when I serve the content with python -m SimpleHTTPServer everything behaves normally, but when I copy the HTML onto the server and browse the site at the server's URL, some links will have a port number appended to the domain. For example: url.com:84/path where the correct path is url.com/path. The port number is usually different, always between 81-85. It is an Apache server. I'm not experienced with web server configuration, and I'm not the admin of the server. • Hosting advice for a write-heavy dynamic website

  I have built a website using PHP and MySQL and now I am looking for a hosting service. I am expecting about a 1000 users registering and about 5-10k pageviews/day in a week's time. So which host should I opt for? It will let users submit contents of type blobs and submit around 10 pictures per users. I hope that traffic will increase so can justhost's or bluehost's shared hosting serve that purpose or should I go for more dedicated ones. • SEO for images: can I use a different (cookieless) domain?

  Hello, We want to increase the value of some of our important images by means of SEO, and we want to start serving them from a different, i.e. cookieless, domain. We want to go from http://www.example.com/images/1234.jpg to http://www.example.com/germany/bavaria/landscape.jpg which can easily be done via URL rewriting. Then on the other hand, we would like to serve the image from a completely different domain, let's say http://www.examplestatic.com/germany/bavaria/landscape.jpg, to save the overhead of sending the cookie from www.example.com. Somehow I feel that this is not a good idea because I move the image away from the content by putting it on a different domain. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Naturally, I would just use a different subdomain, e.g. img.example.com, but we already use subdomains for languages and our cookies are valid for all subdomains of example.com, so this won't help. • Identify "non-secure" content IE warns about [on hold]

  As many know, if you serve a page over https and the content loads resources (images, stylesheets, js, SWF objects, etc) over http, older versions of Internet Explorer will show the user a warning saying "This page contains both secure and non-secure items". This is discomforting to many non-technical users. Usually, I can look at the HTML source and identify which item(s) are triggering this error. Sometimes a Flash object will load something else or some embedded javascript will put a new object in the DOM and trigger this. What tools are good for quickly tracking down the source of the warning?

  I am looking for a book about the Unix command-line toolkit (sh, grep, sed, awk, cut, etc.) that I read some time ago. It was an excellent book, but I totally forgot its name. The great thing about this specific book was the running example. It showed how to implement a university bookkeeping system using only text-processing tools. You would find a student by name with grep, update grades with sed, calculate average grades with awk, attach grades to IDs with cut, and so on. If my memory serve, this book had a black cover, and was published circa 1980. Does anyone remember this book? I would appreciate any help in finding it.

• tomcat serving static content with directory listings

  I have tomcat 7 configured to serve static contents from a directory: <Host appBase="webapps" name="localhost"> ... <Context docBase="/var/projectA/static" path="/projectA/" /> </Host> This is available at localhost:8080/projectA/. Is it possible to somehow enable directory listings for this context? I know it's possible to do this with apache in front of tomcat, but that's not what I'm looking for. p.s. there's no 'tomcat' tag and my rep doesn't allow me to create tags...
