• Who makes software validation? What are the steps of its?

- by uzay95
Fill in the X,Y,Z please. Software validation has X,Y,Z steps. Client have to provide X,Y,Z to the developer before starting to write software. When software finished, validation completes with doing X,Y,Z (sign, approval, test pictures, logs etc.). If we buy a general software like invoice management tool or SAP module which can modify/change for every customer, who should make the software validation?

• How did Perl gain a reputation for being a write-only language?

- by Andrew Grimm
How did Perl gain a reputation (deserved, undeserved, or used to be deserved, no longer so) of being a "write only language"? Was it The syntax of the language Specific features that were available in the language Specific features not being available in the language (or at least old versions of it) The kind of tasks Perl was being used for The kind of people who use Perl (people who aren't full-time programmers) Criticism from people committed to another language Something else? Background: I'd like to know if some aspects that gave Perl the reputation of being write-only also apply to other languages (specifically ruby). Disclaimer: I recognise that Perl doesn't force people to do write-only code (can any language?), and that you can write bad code in any language.

• Best way to explain to someone that software developers need to install tools (mainly build integrat

- by leeand00
I work at a software company where most of the people are afraid to install new tools to increase productivity. They give me excuses like: I don't need to install something else. I can do this myself. etc...many other baseless arguments. In an ecommerece business, the end-users should not have to install anything, everything should be managed by them from the web, and the developers should be the ones installing things to increase productivity and teamwork i.e.: Version Control Systems Build Tools (ANT, NANT, Maven, continuous integration, CSS Frameworks) Integrated Development Environments Frameworks (Unit testing, etc) Etc... How else can I get my point across without sound crass?

• What are some commonly used source code check-in policies?

- by rwmnau
I'm curious what code review policies other development shops apply to their source code when it's checked into the source control repository. I'm setting up a TFS (Team Foundation) server, and I'd like to apply some check-in policies to start to stamp out bad practices. For example, I was thinking of starting with the following couple, so this is the kind of stuff I'm looking for: Prohibit empty "Catch" blocks. This would prevent applications from swallowing any exceptions without at least requiring a comment explaining why it's not necessary to do anything with the exception. Prohibit "Catch ex as Exception" generic exception handling. Instead, require code to catch specific types of exceptions and deal with them appropriately, instead of just building catch-all handling. Require a check-in comment. This one should be self-explanatory, though it seems that TFS (and most other source-control systems) don't require a comment by default. While these are just examples, they're where I'm thinking of starting, and while I'd like some additional examples of what's popular, I'm open to feedback on these. Also, though we're a mostly .NET shop, I imagine the popular policies are universal across languages and IDEs (we have some Java development and a few people who will use the repository develop with Eclipse).

• Does software testing have a future?

- by Firas
Hello everybody. My current career is in software testing, but I feel that I am wasting my time, maybe because I don't know the future path of this career, and where I will arrive in the future if I continue in this career. And I don't know how can I develop myself in this career. Can I have my own job in this field? Please give me good suggestions and opinion. Many thanks.

• Are there free, low cost, or open source tools for matching name/address data?

- by luiscolorado
This question is related to Tools for matching name/address data. There is a number commercial tools provided by SAS, Oracle, Microsoft, etc., that allow to de-duplicate or merging names of individuals or companies coming from multiple sources. However, after reading the answers to the question mentioned before, I wondered why a seemingly interesting problem didn't receive any answers mentioning open source projects that could tackle the problem. Are you aware of any open source projects or algorithms to implement the so called "record linking", "record merging", or "clustering"?

• How to bring coordination between file system and database?

- by Lock up
I am working on a online file management project. We are storing references on the database (sql server) and files data on the on file system. We are facing a problem of coordination between file system and database while we are uploading a file and also in case of deleting a file. First we create a reference in the database or store files on file system. The problem is that if I create a reference in the database first and then store a file on file system, but while storing files on the file system any type of error occur, then the reference for that file is created in the database but no file data exist on the file system. Please give me some solution how to deal with such situation. I am badly in need of it. This case happens also while we deleting a file?

• Using macro to check null values

- by poliron
My C code contains many functions with pointers to different structs as parameters which shouldn't be NULL pointers. To make my code more readable, I decided to replace this code: if(arg1==NULL || arg2==NULL || arg3==NULL...) { return SOME_ERROR; } With that macro: NULL_CHECK(arg1,arg2,...) How should I write it, if the number of args is unknown and they can point to different structs?(I work in C99)

• php:: apply backticks to first word in sentence

- by Hailwood
Hi guys, basically what I am trying to do is, I have an array that looks something like this: array( array( 'select' =>'first string', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'second', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'the third string', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'fourth string', 'escape' => false ), ) I am looping over it and I want to end up with this output array( array( 'select' =>'`first` string', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'`second`', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'`the` third string', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'fourth string', 'escape' => false ), ) so basic rules are backticks are only applied if escape is true backticks are only applied to the first word in a sentence if there is only one word backticks are applied to the word My plan was to use if($item['escape']) { $pos = (strpos($item['select'], ' ') === false ? strlen($item['select']) : strpos($item['select'], ' ')); $item['select'] = '`' . substr($item['select'], 0, $pos) . '`' . substr($item['select'], $pos, strlen($item['select'])); } but the $item['select'] = line seems rather long winded, is there a better way to write it?

• Why do some games randomly turn my screen a random solid color?

- by Emlena.PhD
When playing some games my computer will randomly have an error that I cannot fix without turning it off and back on again. The screen changes to one solid color, which varies (off the top of my head I can remember seeing solid green, magenta, etc..) and the sound blares a single tone. The sound sometimes briefly restores and I can still hear the game sounds and even hear and still be heard by people in my Mumble channel, but the screen doesn't right itself so I'm still blind. What's more is this happens in some games but not in others. While the game is actually running, not while I'm still in the menu. However, it does happen if I'm afk or idle but the game world is still rendering. Games where the error occurs: League of Legends World of Warcraft Trine The Sims 2 Dungeon Defenders Safe games: games where it has never occurred: Tribes: Ascend Star Wars: the Old Republic Battlefield 3 So relatively older games cause the problem while newer games do not? I cannot predict when it will happen, it just seems random. However, if it happens and I try playing the same game further after restart it does appear to occur more frequently after the first time. But if I switch to a safe game it doesn't continue happening. Both of my RAM sticks appear fine, flipped position or either one on their own and games still run, computer still boots. I would think over-heating, but then why not all games? ALso, sometimes it happens immediately after I start playing, within seconds of the 3D world booting up. I'm looking to upgrade very soon so I want to figure out what component or software is fubar and replace/repair it. Any suggestions or recommendations of tools would be helpful. Below is some system information. Dxdiag does not detect any problems. • When running Adobe Acrobat's OCR on a PDF document, which downsampling produces a higher quality: 600 dpi or 72 dpi?

- by Ricardo Altamirano
I have a large PDF document that consists of scanned pages of a textbook. I want to run Adobe Acrobat 9's text recognition function on it, but I'm presented with this menu when I do. I'm confused by the options in the highlighted menu. What option will produce the highest quality/most readable text? I thought 600 dpi implies a higher quality image than 72 dpi, so I'm confused by "High (72 dpi)" and "Lowest (600 dpi)."

• How do I make my page respect h1 css addition? [migrated]

- by Adobe
I add h1 { margin-top:100px; } to the end of the css, but the page doesn't change. But if I add to the html of some h1: <h1 style="margin-top:100px;"><a class="toc-backref" href="#id4">KHotKeys</a><a class="headerlink" href="#khotkeys" title="Permalink to this headline">¶</a></h1> Then it does. • What is the fastest and best way to convert an rmvb video to mp4/mkv without losing any quality?

- by Eric Leung
the file will be played in a popbox3d. my old method was to convert the video using vidcoder (an offshoot of handbrake) using normal settings, but i've recently confirmed that this significantly reduces video and audio quality. i bumped up the conversion quality to 'high profile' and this produced a higher quality video but raised the conversion time to about twice the video length (95 minutes to convert a 45 minute video) on a core2duo laptop. this is less than ideal when a large number of videos need to be converted. i have tried a direct remuxing using mkv toolnix but this produced a video that refused to display video on the popbox3d, which is consistent with the reported:
it is possible to put RealMedia A/V in MKV container (used MKVtoolnix) - however, it is awkward to play later. RV40 is only suspected to be based on H.264 - simplify, is not consistent with MPEG-4 AVC specification.
i have read that ...
Under normal circumstances, [ffmpeg] should convert the video to .video.mp4 and the audio to (.wav then to) .audio.mp4, then mux the video and audio into a new .mp4 file and delete the temporary video-only and audio-only files.
and i am currently attempting to discover how this is done. help? PS: i download a lot of series from asia and for some strange reason, rmvb is a really popular format over there. sometimes, it's the only format that's available. unfortunately, it's a format that is incompatible with the popbox3d, so i have to convert the files before i can watch them on my tv.

- by PrateekSaluja
Hello Experts, We have designed a face book page.It is working fine in all browser including IE7 but it is not working in IE8.We checked then we got if we run our code outside the face book page it works in IE8 but when we put our code into face book page its not working.Here is the css code what we are using for IE8. <!--[if lt IE 8]> <style> .nv_a { width:90px; height:27px; float:left; text-align:center; padding-top:8px; } .nvt_a { width:66px; height:27px; float:left; text-align:center; padding-top:8px; } .nv_a a { width:90px; height:27px; float:left; padding-top:8px; text-align:center; color:#000; display:inline-block; text-decoration:none; background-color:#e0e0e0; border-top:solid 1px #999; border-left:solid 1px #999; border-right:solid 1px #999; border-bottom:solid 1px #999; } .nv_a a:hover { width:90px; height:27px; padding-top:8px; float:left; color:#000; text-align:center; background-color:#ccc; } .nvt_a a { width:66px; height:27px; float:left; padding-top:8px; text-align:center; color:#000; display:inline-block; text-decoration:none; background-color:#e0e0e0; border-top:solid 1px #999; border-left:solid 1px #999; border-right:solid 1px #999; border-bottom:solid 1px #999; border:1px solid red; } Please help us to solve the issue.

• How do I tell if my solid state hard disk is bad?

- by Guy
I have a Windows 7 Ultimate computer (Shuttle) that I built myself and in it I put a Solid State Drive (SSD). It's been working well for a number of months but now when I start it there are problems. I have 2 users setup on the computer and when I try and sign in with either user it claims that the password is incorrect. I could understand the odd typo but I've had my wife try it as well and we've got the passwords correct. On top of that it will remain at the login screen for 1 minute and 20 seconds and then spontaneously reboot without shutting down. So I'm trying to work out if this is a hard disk problem or something else. Any ideas? (I have a nightly backup to a WHS so it will be easy to recover but I don't want to do that unless I have to and don't want to waste time putting in a new HD just to discover it's something else.)

• Expire windows user (license) after some time according to first login instead of a solid expiration date

- by smhnaji
In a project, we have lots of Windows user that have bought licenses for 1 month, 2 month,... 1 year and so... CURRENT SITUATION (WHAT I DON'T WANT): When users are created and added to the OS, a solid expiration date is given. WHAT I WANT: Users' expiration date should be calculated automatically after first login. The user might not need his account right when purchases the license. In another words: When a license is purchased at Jan 1, he should use the license until Feb 1. No matter whether he really logs in or not. He cannot come Feb 5 and begin using his license because that has expired then. What I want is that when he comes at Feb 5 and begins using, the license update until March 5. Environment: Windows Server 2012

I am looking for solid non-console examples of how to use ASP.NET MVC1 or MVC2, NHibernate, Fluent NHibernate & Castle. I looked at Sharp Architecture and its just too much to digest for my newbie mind. I need a clean, clear, concise Step A, Step B, Step C tutorial or a solid example that is a web application and not a console application. I have searched and searched and searched and I have found incomplete examples (examples with just enough information to make me say where does that code go), console applications and no good web application examples. Does anyone know of a COMPLETE web example? If I see another console example, I'm going to scream....

• Inactive users in windows server after some time according to first login instead of defining a solid expiration date

- by smhnaji
We want to give access to some Windows Server users so they can remotely have access to our server and download from a special folder of the server. The licenses we give to users, are time base. There should be 1 month, 2 month, ..., 1 year, ... licenses. CURRENT SITUATION (WHAT I DON'T WANT): When users are created and added to the OS, a solid expiration date is given. WHAT I WANT: Users' expiration date should be calculated automatically after first login. The user might not need his account right when purchases the license. In another words: When a license of the user we create is purchased at Jan 1st, he should use the license until Feb 1st. No matter whether he really logs in or not. He cannot come Feb 5th and begin using his license because that has expired then. What I want is that when he comes at Feb 5th and begins using, the license update until March 5th. CLARIFICATION (Update after MDMarra's comment) Working environment is Windows Server 2012. By the word 'user', I mean Native Windows Server Users. Whenever a new person purchases a license with me, I create them manually using net user command like this: net user ali pass /add /expires:2013-12-25
