• Lubuntu: Sceen looks like in negative all the time

  I've just installed Lubuntu 12.10 on an old laptop (IBM ThinkPad 600X). However, after booting Lubuntu, everything looks like in negative (eg. colors are inverted, like there's some assistive technology enabled). During installation (using alternative installer), colors were OK. Before installing Lubuntu, I had windows installed, it was showing colors OK as well. So, I believe it's something with Lubuntu. Is there any way I can fix that?

• How can I centralise MySQL data between 3 or more geographically separate servers?

  To explain the background to the question: We have a home-grown PHP application (for running online language-learning courses) running on a Linux server and using MySQL on localhost for saving user data (e.g. results of tests taken, marks of submitted work, time spent on different pages in the courses, etc). As we have students from different geographic locations we currently have 3 virtual servers hosted close to those locations (Spain, UK and Hong Kong) and users are added to the server closest to them (they access via different URLs, e.g. europe.domain.com, uk.domain.com and asia.domain.com). This works but is an administrative nightmare as we have to remember which server a particular user is on, and users can only connect to one server. We would like to somehow centralise the information so that all users are visible on any of the servers and users could connect to any of the 3 servers. The question is, what method should we use to implement this. It must be an issue that that lots of people have encountered but I haven't found anything conclusive after a fair bit of Googling around. The closest I have seen to solutions are: something like master-master replication, but I have read so many posts suggesting that this is not a good idea as things like auto_increment fields can break. circular replication, this sounded perfect but to quote from O'Reilly's High Performance MySQL, "In general, rings are brittle and best avoided" We're not against rewriting code in the application to make it work with whatever solution is required but I am not sure if replication is the correct thing to use. Thanks, Andy P.S. I should add that we experimented with writes to a central database and then using reads from a local database but the response time between the different servers for writing was pretty bad and it's also important that written data is available immediately for reading so if replication is too slow this could cause out-of-date data to be returned. Edit: I have been thinking about writing my own rudimentary replication script which would involve something like having each user given a server ID to say which is his "home server", e.g. users in asia would be marked as having the Hong Kong server as their own server. Then the replication scripts (which would be a PHP script set to run as a cron job reasonably frequently, e.g. every 15 minutes or so) would run independently on each of the servers in the system. They would go through the database and distribute any information about users with the "home server" set to the server that the script is running on to all of the other databases in the system. They would also need to suck new information which has been added to any of the other databases on the system where the "home server" flag is the server where the script is running. I would need to work out the details and build in the logic to deal with conflicts but I think it would be possible, however I wanted to make sure that there is not a correct solution for this already out there as it seems like it must be a problem that many people have already come across.

• How to diagnose "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage"

  Our web site is working great for 99.99% of our users, but a few people (all of whom use Internet Explorer) are running into an error. Most pages on the site load fine, but for one specific page (the same page for all affected users), all they get is: Internet explorer cannot display the webpage It doesn't matter whether the page is accessed over http or https - it fails to load either way. Every other page on the site, as far as I can tell, works fine for them. Not only that, the same users can load that specific page fine in Firefox. I've checked the web server logs and I can't find any smoking guns there. The site is running IIS on Windows Server 2003. Is there any way to get IE to give the user more information than just "cannot display the web page"? There's a "More information" button, but all it tells you is to make sure that your DNS servers are working, make sure you're not working offline, etc. :(

  I have been trying to find the necessary command line switches for automating the upgrade for my Windows 8 clients to Windows 8.1. I have the ISO extracted and I've run setup.exe /? but that doesn't tell me enough. I can't find any relevant information from search engines. Can anyone point me to some documentation or information on how to automate the upgrade so that it keeps user data, programs, etc? I know how to do it when running the installer manually, but I obviously do not wish to do that with 100+ machines.

• Victor Grazi, Java Champion!

  Congratulations to Victor Grazi, who has been made a Java Champion! He was nominated by his peers and selected as a Java Champion for his experience as a developer, and his work in the Java and Open Source communities. Grazi is a Java evangelist and serves on the Executive Committee of the Java Community Process, representing Credit Suisse - the first non-technology vendor on the JCP. He also arranges the NY Java SIG meetings at Credit Suisse's New York campus each month, and he says it has been a valuable networking opportunity. He also is the spec lead for JSR 354, the Java Money and Currency API. Grazi has been building real time financial systems in Java since JDK version 1.02! In 1996, the internet was just starting to happen, Grazi started a dot com called Supermarkets to Go, that provided an on-line shopping presence to supermarkets and grocers. Grazi wrote most of the code, which was a great opportunity for him to learn Java and UI development, as well as database management. Next, he went to work at Bank of NY building a trading system. He studied for Java certification, and he noted that getting his certification was a game changer because it helped him started to learn the nuances of the Java language. He has held other development positions, "You may have noticed that you don't get as much junk mail from Citibank as you used to - that is thanks to one of my projects!" he told us. Grazi joined Credit Suisse in 2005 and is currently Vice President on the central architecture team. Grazi is proud of his open source project, Java Concurrent Animated, a series of animations that visualize the functionality of the components in the java.util.concurrent library. "It has afforded me the opportunity to speak around the globe" and because of it, has discovered that he really enjoys doing public presentations. He is a fine addition to the Java Champions program. The Java Champions are an exclusive group of passionate Java technology and community leaders who are community-nominated and selected under a project sponsored by Oracle. Nominees are named and selected through a peer review process. Java Champions get the opportunity to provide feedback, ideas, and direction that will help Oracle grow the Java Platform. • Should you disable page file with SSD?

  I've been reading this question, and it has a lot of great information. But assuming you have more than enough ram, I think page file should be disabled on SSD to extend the life time. I know you would lose the core dump on crash, but not many people need that information. From my understand without a page file as you reach the limit of your ram that might trigger thrashing on disk. But for SSDs there is no concept of thrashing, reads are fast. What do you guys think?

• What is Causing this IIS 7 Web Service Sporadic Connectivity Error?

  On sporadic occasions we receive the following error when attempting to call an .asmx web service from a .Net client application: "The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." By sporadic I mean that it might occur zero, once every few days, or a half-dozen times a day for some users. It will never occur for the first web service call of a user. And the subsequent (usually the same) call will always work immediately after the failure. The failures happen across a variety of methods in the service and usually happens between 15-20 seconds (according to the log) from the time of the request. Looking in the IIS site log for the particular call will show one or the other of the following windows error codes: 121: The semaphore timeout period has elapsed. 1236: The network connection was aborted by the local system. Some additional environment details: Running on internal network web farm consisting of two servers running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 OS. These problems did not occur when running in an older IIS6 web farm of three servers running on Windows Server 2003 (and we use a single IIS6/2003 instance for our development and staging environments with no issues). EDIT: Also, all of these server instances are VMWare virtual machines, not sure if that is a surprise anymore or not. The web service is a .Net 2.0/3.5 compiled .asmx web service that has its own application pool (.Net 2.0, integrated pipeline). Only has Windows Authentication enabled. We have another web service on the farm that uses the same physical path as the primary service, the only difference being that Basic Authentication is enabled. This is used for a portion of our ERP system. Have tried using the same and different application pool - no effect on the error. This site isn't hit as often as the primary site and has never had an error. As mentioned, the error will only happen when called from the .Net client - not from other applications. The client application is always creating a new web service object for each request and setting the service credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. The application is either deployed locally to a client or run in a Citrix server session. Those users running in Citrix doesn't seem to experience the issue, only locally deployed clients. The Citrix servers and the web farm are located in the same physical location and are located in the same IP range (10.67.xx.xx). Locally deployed clients experiencing the error are located elsewhere (10.105.xx.xx, 10.31.xx.xx). I've checked the OS logs to see if I can see any problems but nothing really sticks out. EDIT: Actually, I myself just ran into the error a little bit ago. I decided to check out the logs again and saw that there was a Security log entry of "Audit Failure" at the 'same' time (IIS log entry at 1:39:59, event log entry at 1:39:50). Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, I'll have to check out the logs of previous errors. I'm probably grasping for straws but the details: Log Name: Security Source: Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing Date: 7/8/2009 1:39:50 PM Event ID: 5159 Task Category: Filtering Platform Connection Level: Information Keywords: Audit Failure User: N/A Computer: is071019.<**.net Description: The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a bind to a local port. Application Information: Process ID: 1260 Application Name: \device\harddiskvolume1\windows\system32\svchost.exe Network Information: Source Address: 0.0.0.0 Source Port: 54802 Protocol: 17 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 0 Layer Name: Resource Assignment Layer Run-Time ID: 36 I've also tried to use Failed Request Tracing in IIS7 but the service call never actually gets to where FRT can capture it (even though the failure is logged in the web service log). The network infrastructure group said they checked out the DNS and any NIC settings are correct so there is no 'flapping'. Everything pans out. I'm not sure that they checked out any domain controller servers though to see if that could be an issue. Any ideas? Or any other debugging strategies to get to the bottom of this? I'm just the developer in charge of the software and don't really have the knowledge on what to investigate from the networking side of things - although it does sound like a networking issue to me based on what is happening.   I tried to install minidlna on my machine but it appeared to me that it's not in repositories anymore. Well then I decided to compile it myself. After downloading version 1.1.3 I tried to compile but I needed libav headers which I couldn't install via apt - no idea why there has been a lot of broken packages: $ sudo apt-get install libavcodec-dev Reading package lists... Even in the install log I can see : ...   The sys.dm_db_stats_properties Dynamic Management Function returns information about the statistics that are currently on your database objects. This function takes two parameters, an object_id and a stats_id. Let’s have a look at the result set from this function against the AdventureWorks2012.Sales.SalesOrderHeader table. To obtain the object_id and stats_id I will use a CROSS APPLY with the sys.stats system table. SELECT sp.* FROM sys.stats s CROSS APPLY sys.dm_db_stats_properties(s.object_id, s.Stats_id) sp WHERE sp.object_id = object_id('Sales.SalesOrderHeader') The first two columns returned by this function are the object_id and the stats_id columns. The next column, ‘last_updated’, gives you the date and the time that a particular statistic was last updated. The next column, ‘rows’, gives you the total number of rows in the table as of the last statistic update date. The ‘rows_sampled’ column gives you the number of rows that were sampled to create the statistic. The ‘steps’ column represents the number of specific value ranges from the statistic histogram. The ‘unfiltered_rows’ column represents the number of rows before any filters are applied. If a particular statistic is not filtered, the ‘unfiltered_rows’ column will always equal the ‘rows’ column. Lastly we have the ‘modification_counter’ column which represents the number of modification to the leading column in a given statistic since the last time the statistic was updated. Probably the most important column from this Dynamic Management Function is the ‘last_updated’ column. You want to always ensure that you have accurate and updated statistics on your database objects. Accurate statistics are vital for the query optimizer to generate efficient and reliable query execution plans. Without accurate and updated statistics, the performance of your SQL Server would likely suffer. • Unknown MySQL server host - connection problem

  I am new to databases and I have been asked to look at a few tables and see how many records they have and some other information. I cannot access phpMyAdmin through cPanel, which is how I've always done it on my own server. I decided to download MySQL Workbench. I enter in all the information is asks: Hostname: mysite.startlogicmysql.com Port: 3306 Username: user. I press connect and get this Unknown MySQL server host 'mysite.startlogicmysql.com' (11004) Am I using the wrong hostname? I've seen a server name, a hostname in the server variables list which is something like custsql.eigbox.net and the server itself is custsql.eigbox.net In both cases the custsql is a little different than what I posted. I am not sure which one to use. If there is anything else anyone needs to know I can tell you. Tanks.

• Run Logstalgia on Remote Global Apache Log On a WHM System

  I work for a small web development shop. We have a dedicated Linux server running WHM. For fun we want to run Logstalgia on a machine in our office. We'd really like it to display information about all the traffic on our server. Logstalgia use Apache's access logs to generate its visuals, the problem I have is that by default WHM does not have an access log for all sites combined. How can I safely configure our server to output a combined/global Apache access log in a place accessible by a non-root SSH user? I am also concerned that this file could get quite large so I think I'd also need to know how to have it automatically shed old information. • SQLAuthority News – Presented Soft Skill Session on Presentation Skills at SQL Bangalore on May 3, 2014

  I have presented on various database technologies for almost 10 years now. SQL, Database and NoSQL have been part of my life. Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to present on the topic Performing an Effective Presentation. I must say it was blast to prepare as well as present this session. This event was part of the SQL Bangalore community. If you are in Bangalore, you must be part of this group. SQL Bangalore is a wonderful community and we always have a great response when we present on technology. It is SQL User Group and we discuss everything SQL there. This month we had SQL Server 2014 theme and we had a community launch of SQL Server. We have the best of the best speakers presenting on SQL Server 2014 technology. The event had amazing speakers and each of them did justice to the subject. You can read about this over here. In this session I told a story from my life. I talked about who inspired me and how I learned to speak in public. I told stories about two legends  who have inspired me. There is no video recording of this session. We had over 250 people showed up at this event and had a grand  time together. I personally enjoyed a session of Amit Benerjee, Balmukund Lakhani and Vinod Kumar. Ken and Surabh also entertained the audience. Overall, this was a grand event and if you were in Bangalore and did not make it to this event. You did miss out on a few things.
