  I want to replace the PERC S100 RAID Controller with a PERC6i to be able to use 4 SAS harddrives instead of only SATA drives. What exactly do I need for this, what I've got so far: PERC6i PCIe x8 card. 4 x SAS 300GB 15000rpm drives Some questions I have Do I need a different backplane to accomodate the SAS disks? • Unlimited and multi-computer online storage solutions with automatic backup

  As the title says, what are the existing online storage solutions that provide: unlimited storage automatic backup and allow for an unlimited number of computers (use not tied to a single computer)? There are several existing questions on this site related to online storage solutions, but none that is specifically targeted to what I want, so I thought I'd ask the question. This wikipedia article lists some of them, are there others? How do they compare in terms of price, feature set and ease of use? Update: Kinda disappointed no one has any answers to this so far. JungleDisk looks promising, anyone have experience with it? Update 2: To answer the comments, what I'm looking for definitely DOES exist. These solutions all seem to fit the bill: BackMii CrashPlan DataPreserve Humyo JungleDisk KeepVault SpiderOak And some of them are quite cheap (CrashPlan is $100 a year). For unlimited space and computers, I'd say that's pretty good. Does anyone have experience with CrashPlan or any other of the above solutions?

• Luminis and Google Apps Single Sign On

  We are a community college that is plodding forward with a Google Apps for Education implementation. There is support for Single Sign On and a fair amount of documentation for implementing it. We are looking to provide integration with our portal which is currently Luminis 3 (we are upgrading to Luminis 4 within a year). There is documentation available for Luminis specific integration, but apparently it is by request only. I have put the request in to SungardHE (where we license Luminis) and am waiting for a response. My questions are as follows... Is anyone here running Luminis? Have you tried to integrate it with a 3rd party email service like Google Apps for Education or Microsoft LiveEDU? If so, can you elaborate on implementation details above and beyond your Luminis installation and Google Apps setup? Looking for more of a general road map and differences between integration options with Luminis 3 and Luminis 4. Thanks!

  I am not a Linux admin, although I wish I was, and I have seen these questions Amazon EC2 Backup Strategy Amazon EC2 + EBS:: Regular backup plan? And this suggestion http://alestic.com/2009/09/ec2-consistent-snapshot I tried using command line + crontab (the command line works, but crontab for some reason, doesn't) But I'm still pretty lost, all I want is an automated, rolling backup of my amazon EC2 (EBS) data (by rolling I mean keep 3-4 weeks back, but delete old snapshots as new ones come for cost control) And as things usually go, if there is something that is hard and painful, someone creates a solution for it. My question is simple, is there a way using a tool like Puppet to do it without a painful learning curve? (or via other tools like http://ylastic.com) If yes, how?

• Are programmers bad testers?

  I know this sounds a lot like other questions which have already being asked, but it is actually slightly different. It seems to be generally considered that programmers are not good at performing the role of testing an application. For example: Joel on Software - Top Five (Wrong) Reasons You Don't Have Testers (emphasis mine) Don't even think of trying to tell college CS graduates that they can come work for you, but "everyone has to do a stint in QA for a while before moving on to code". I've seen a lot of this. Programmers do not make good testers, and you'll lose a good programmer, who is a lot harder to replace. And in this question, one of the most popular answers says (again, my emphasis): Developers can be testers, but they shouldn't be testers. Developers tend to unintentionally/unconciously avoid to use the application in a way that might break it. That's because they wrote it and mostly test it in the way it should be used. So the question is are programmers bad at testing? What evidence or arguments are there to support this conclusion? Are programmers only bad at testing their own code? Is there any evidence to suggest that programmers are actually good at testing? What do I mean by "testing?" I do not mean unit testing or anything that is considered part of the methodology used by the software team to write software. I mean some kind of quality assurance method that is used after the code has been built and deployed to whatever that software team would call the "test environment."

• Hot deploying with Tomcat Manager fails because file already exists

  Tomcat beginner question that I hope will help many. Could someone explain how TomCat hot deploy is supposed to work. We have a currently deployed 'TomCatTest', and we want to fix a small bug in 'TomCatTest' with no downtime for users. We are using the Tomcat Manager console, and just trying to upload a file there. • Rendering shadow sprites in cocos2d-x

  I am writing a 2D game with cocos2d-x. I want to put a "shadow" sprite on a background sprite using the equation: MAX(0, Cd*1 - Cs*S) where Cd is the destination color (that is, a background pixel), Cs is the source color (the shadow pixel) , S is the scale factor (between 0 and 1). The MAX() function is used to avoid negative results. This is a lighting effect: when the shadow sprite pixel is 0, there is no effect on the background pixel, otherwise, the background pixel becomes darker. Now, the only way that comes to my mind is to change the blending equation to GL_FUNC_SUBTRACT, but it doesn't compile with cocos2d-x (can't found it)... I would subclass the CCSprite class in order to implement the draw() method in order to change, when needed, the blending equation, call the original draw() method and restore the blending equation to its previous state at the end of the method. So my questions are two: how to use glBlendEquation() with cocos2d-x? Keep in mind that i am writing a game for iphone/android/windows. are shadows handled this way in 2D games? Thx

• Time Machine (OSX) doesn't back up files in Mount Point or Disk Image File

  I found this Q&A (http://superuser.com/questions/148849/backup-mounted-drive-of-an-image-in-time-machine) and this prompted me to ask the following question: I have two disk images which are scripted to be mounted on login. These two disk images are always mounted to the same location. These two disk images are encrypted TrueCrypt volumes. Time Machine (TM) will only back up the disk images the first time they are mounted, but not after that. As I modify documents within the volumes throughout the day, the modified timestamps are adjusted properly. However, TM does not back them up. TM never backs up the mount points which are two folders within my home directory. Any ideas as to why neither the mount point or the image files are backed up? Do the image files have to be closed (unmounted) after being modified for TM to back them up? Thanks, Chris

• Freelancing - Share the source code?

  I have developed a couple of form based windows application in vb.net for a client and they all work well and he paid me through a freelance site. I have handed over the executable and the setup to the client and all was well. Now the client wants the source code for the application. Is there a general practice on sharing the source code with the client? Please note - the client never mentioned he needs the source code and he is now asking for it after a week after the app was completed and he made the payment. I don't mind sharing the source code, but I am not sure if I should. This probably means the client would not hire me again and the bigger question is the source code really his property? This question may have been asked a few times, but I cannot still draw a conclusion on what is right. update To answer some of the questions: The source code was not mentioned at all. There was no exclusive contract signed except for the usual agreement of the freelance site. I am not sure if software development comes under work for hire and is it valid for users outside of the US? The reason for not sharing the source code was this was a very small project and I got paid for a mere few hours. So if I have an option then definitely I would want to keep the source code to myself as that gives a possibility of the client coming back. The application works flawlessly and the code is solid. Also, the task that the client wanted to achieve was very challenging and I would not like other programmers (competitors) to know how I achieved it. So unless I get the confirmation that the source code is purely the property of the client, I would not be willing to share it.

• ASP.NET Connections Fall 2011 Slides and Code

  Thanks everyone who came to my talks at ASP.NET Connections in Las Vegas!  There was a definite theme to my talks this year…taking advantage of JavaScript to build a rich presentation layer. I gave the following three talks: JsRender Templates – Originally, I was scheduled to give a talk on jQuery Templates.  However, jQuery Templates has been deprecated and JsRender is the new technology which replaces jQuery Templates. In the talk, I give plenty of code samples of using JsRender.  You can download the slides and code samples RIGHT HERE   HTML5 – In this talk, I focused on the features of HTML5 which are the most interesting to developers building database-driven Web applications. In particular, I discussed Web Sockets,  Web workers, Web Storage, Indexed DB, and the Offline Application Cache. All of these features are supported by Safari, Chrome, and Firefox today and they will be supported by Internet Explorer 10. Currently in my network we have a collection of linux fileservers, firewalls, etc. with all windows clients. I am looking for a network management tool, similar to lansweeper that would be able to run on linux servers. I know questions asking for software suggestions are typically frowned upon, but I have looked high and low, and I'm starting to think nothing like this exists. • How bad is it to use display: none in CSS?

  I've heard many times that it's bad to use display: none for SEO reasons, as it could be an attempt to push in irrelevant popular keywords. A few questions: Is that still received wisdom? Does it make a difference if you're only hiding a single word, or perhaps a single character? If you should avoid any use of it, what are the preferred techniques for hiding (in situations where you need it to become visible again on certain conditions)? Some references I've found so far: Matt Cutts from 2005 in a comment If you're straight-out using CSS to hide text, don't be surprised if that is called spam. I'm not saying that mouseovers or DHTML text or have-a-logo-but-also-have-text is spam; I answered that last one at a conference when I said "imagine how it would look to a visitor, a competitor, or someone checking out a spam report. If you show your company's name and it's Expo Markers instead of an Expo Markers logo, you should be fine. If the text you decide to show is 'Expo Markers cheap online discount buy online Expo Markers sale ...' then I would be more cautious, because that can look bad." And in another comment on the same article We can flag text that appears to be hidden using CSS at Google. To date we have not algorithmically removed sites for doing that. We try hard to avoid throwing babies out with bathwater. (My emphasis) Eric Enge said in 2008 The legitimate use of this technique is so prevalent that I would rarely expect search engines to penalize a site for using the display: none attribute.   I am preparing to deploy Office365 for my organization. We have an on premise Active Directory Domain Controller (Windows Server 2012 R2). We would like to leverage our Active Directory for: automatic user provisioning in Office365, and password synchronization, using the DirSync tool. Our Active Directory Domain is example.pvt. Email is currently Rackspace Exchange and email addresses follow the form [email protected]. Active Directory User Logon Name follows the form firstinitiallastname. My Questions are: What Active Directory Attribute(s) can be use in provisioning the email address in Office365? Is it possible to use the E-mail field in Active Directory to provision the email address in Office365? Will the fact that our Active Directory Domain has a different extension (.pvt vs. .com) cause a problem with our planned provisioning method?

  I've been using Text Expander for years. However, I found out today it doesn't work on my newly upgraded (to Snow Leopard) Macbook Pro anymore. I know that there are a lot of applications that are not compatible with Snow Leopard, and developers around the world are working on them to work again on our beautiful macs. My questions are: 1. • Windows 7 KSOD On Login

  For those that are unaware, KSOD means blacK Screen of Death. Essentially, when windows starts my computer shows only the cursor and a black screen. It seems like any and all shell elements are disabled (or perhaps not started). I have seen a number of these questions asked, none of which have matched my situation. CTRL + ALT + ... does not respond Restarting in safe mode, results in the same KSOD sfc /scannow seems to have no effect when typed at the command prompt that is accessed using the recovery tools via the install disk Update to item 3: sfc /scannow reports: There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again. However, Windows does not restart past KSOD. • Google indexing and ranking a custom domain served by Google App Engine

  I have a website served on the following URL : "http://www.plugimmo.com" which is a custom domain served by Google App Engine on the following URL : http://plugimmo.appspot.com Since a while I have tried to optimise the Google indexing and ranking with no success. The problem is that searching on Google the keywords in the title of my home page does not retrieve my website at all even not in the 1,000 first results : When checking the cached version of google ( cache:www.plugimmo.com), it says that the cached version is the one of 20-Aug-12 of "plugimmo.appspot.com". It looks there are several issues : 1 - The cached version is really old. I have made a lot of changes since the 20-Aug-12 and I saw the googlebot crawling my site several times. 2 - The cached version is for "plugimmo.appspot.com" 3 - When looking at the Google Webmaster tools, I see that the number of pages indexed for www.plugimmo.com is 0, but that can't be the case given the number of changes I made since then. My questions would therefore be the following : Why is the version of the cache so old although I saw the googlebot crawling the site many times since 20-Aug-12 ? Is there a problem with indexing a custom domain served by Google App Engine ? Why is the Google Webmaster tools showing 0 pages indexed although new pages have been crawled and that no errors have been reported in the indexing ? Also, the site has been developed with Google Web Toolkit. I have followed the guidelines regarding crawling Ajax sites. The home page when crawled by a robot is redirected to http://www.plugimmo.com/HomeSnapshot.html Thanks a lot for your help ! Hugues

The have managed to convince one of the head honchos from the Visual Studio product team to come to Scotland. • Serving static content from cookie less domain and mod_deflate

  I have two domain. One domain with my main website and the other with js/css/etc.. files, static content. mod_deflate is enabled for both domains, but when i run ySlow in FireFox it says none of my static content is compressed. When i bring back the js or css file to my normal domain it gets compressed right. Only when its served from the other domain is it not compressed. Do i have to do some more configuration for this to work? I am using this line in my .htaccess file AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript text/css text/html text/xml text/plain application/x-httpd-php I tried to but the line in my httpd.conf file but it gives me the same results. PS. If this is more of a serverfault question i am sorry for this. But i see a lot of questions here concerning mod_deflate and ySlow
