• Ubuntu 11.10 on MacBook Air 2011 - problems with drivers

  I had just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my MacBook Air, and have a lot of problems. I used this tutorial, after executing script and rebooting some problems were solved, but now I have completely not working touchpad, keyboard & screen backlight works incorrect (screen brightness is not 100%, but it is 100% in settings, keyboard backlight turns on/off randomly). How to fix it? P. S. Script said that it's no such file or directory for some .icc file. Google says, that I should copy it from Mac OS X drive, but I completely replaced it with Ubuntu.

• What is so good about Linux? [closed]

  Self-explanatory question title. I've only ever used Windows OS's (except Mac OSX at friends etc, years ago occasionally) and when diving into the world of programming, Linux is a name that is coming up every other tutorial or article. All my web hosts run Linux and a lot of programming literature covers how to go about various tasks on Linux as well as Windows, but other than the odd raving I've read years ago about Linux being less resource-intensive, I haven't really given it much thought. Any article I read about Linux and whether it should be used for... 'regular' use, it's shunned since any windows applications I'm familiar with will usually require the windows API and there's no end of 'hacking' to get various programs working on Linux. As far as I understand a GUI is optional on Linux too? This all sounds very noobish I'm sure, but we all start somewhere, so: What is Linux good for? What should Linux be used for?

• Compiler Dependencies [closed]

  I'm a newbie researcher who's passion is programming languages (Web era). I'm wondering why all the Web frameworks and Web-based general purposes languages, have a huge number of dependencies when you want to install and then use (e.g., extend, alternate, etc.) their compilers. For example, Ruby on Rails or Scala. If I want to download their source code, and try to build it again, to me at least, feels like a can of worms. I have a MAC, so I need to install MACports, then update my XCode, then get the compiler source code that has bunch of other dependencies, then its hard to set things up; just to see the installed open-source compiler works fine.

• Web framework for IPad and common desktop browsers?

  We are developing a web-based, commercial point-of-sale application. We'd like the same web site to work well on an Ipad as well a desktop browsers. We're looking for a web framework that makes the site look good on an IPad, but also makes the site work well in a desktop browser such as Chrome, IE, or Firefox on Windows or a Mac. I found quite a few at 18 Mobile Frameworks and Development Tools for Creating iPhone Apps Most of them, such as JQTouch, help a web site look and act more like a native IPhone application but they don't emphasize the cross platform/browser experience. The exception seems to be Sproutcore, which seems to be a full-fledged javascript MVC application framework. I did have trouble getting some of the demos to work under Chrome, but what did work looks good. What framework(s) have you actually used to develop web sites to work on an Ipad and desktop browser? If you didn't use a framework, how did you get it to work well under both environments?

  I've setup Juju on a local VM inside VMWare running on Mac OSX. • How to Use Steam In-Home Streaming

  Steam’s In-Home Streaming is now available to everyone, allowing you to stream PC games from one PC to another PC on the same local network. Use your gaming PC to power your laptops and home theater system. This feature doesn’t allow you to stream games over the Internet, only the same local network. Even if you tricked Steam, you probably wouldn’t get good streaming performance over the Internet. Why Stream? When you use Steam In-Home streaming, one PC sends its video and audio to another PC. The other PC views the video and audio like it’s watching a movie, sending back mouse, keyboard, and controller input to the other PC. This allows you to have a fast gaming PC power your gaming experience on slower PCs. For example, you could play graphically demanding games on a laptop in another room of your house, even if that laptop has slower integrated graphics. You could connect a slower PC to your television and use your gaming PC without hauling it into a different room in your house. Streaming also enables cross-platform compatibility. You could have a Windows gaming PC and stream games to a Mac or Linux system. This will be Valve’s official solution for compatibility with old Windows-only games on the Linux (Steam OS) Steam Machines arriving later this year. NVIDIA offers their own game streaming solution, but it requires certain NVIDIA graphics hardware and can only stream to an NVIDIA Shield device. How to Get Started In-Home Streaming is simple to use and doesn’t require any complex configuration — or any configuration, really. First, log into the Steam program on a Windows PC. This should ideally be a powerful gaming PC with a powerful CPU and fast graphics hardware. Install the games you want to stream if you haven’t already — you’ll be streaming from your PC, not from Valve’s servers. (Valve will eventually allow you to stream games from Mac OS X, Linux, and Steam OS systems, but that feature isn’t yet available. You can still stream games to these other operating systems.) Next, log into Steam on another computer on the same network with the same Steam username. Both computers have to be on the same subnet of the same local network. You’ll see the games installed on your other PC in the Steam client’s library. Click the Stream button to start streaming a game from your other PC. The game will launch on your host PC, and it will send its audio and video to the PC in front of you. Your input on the client will be sent back to the server. Be sure to update Steam on both computers if you don’t see this feature. Use the Steam > Check for Updates option within Steam and install the latest update. Updating to the latest graphics drivers for your computer’s hardware is always a good idea, too. Improving Performance Here’s what Valve recommends for good streaming performance: Host PC: A quad-core CPU for the computer running the game, minimum. The computer needs enough processor power to run the game, compress the video and audio, and send it over the network with low latency. Streaming Client: A GPU that supports hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding on the client PC. This hardware is included on all recent laptops and PCs. Ifyou have an older PC or netbook, it may not be able to decode the video stream quickly enough. Network Hardware: A wired network connection is ideal. You may have success with wireless N or AC networks with good signals, but this isn’t guaranteed. Game Settings: While streaming a game, visit the game’s setting screen and lower the resolution or turn off VSync to speed things up. In-Home Steaming Settings: On the host PC, click Steam > Settings and select In-Home Streaming to view the In-Home Streaming settings. You can modify your streaming settings to improve performance and reduce latency. Feel free to experiment with the options here and see how they affect performance — they should be self-explanatory. Check Valve’s In-Home Streaming documentation for troubleshooting information. You can also try streaming non-Steam games. Click Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library on your host PC and add a PC game you have installed elsewhere on your system. You can then try streaming it from your client PC. I am trying to get my web service up using mac ports and I am just trying to configure all the files. • How to manage security cameras in Ubuntu?

  I am setting up a server of sorts and chose ubuntu for the OS as my dad has it on a few computers. I am unimpressed with Windows or MAC due to all the add-ons and complexity of it when all I want is something simple. The system will have 3 purposes, storing my wife's photography work (she is a professional photographer) storing music for quick access to our entertainment system (will be running the system through the tv in our living room and thus through our surround sound) and will also serve as a DVR unit for a home security system I am going to put together. My question is what sort of software options are there for the Ubuntu system as far as a DVR with frame by frame playback. It does not need to be fancy but of course a variety of options are a nice touch.

• PhpStorm theme installation

  I want to install PhpStorm color scheme from XML. Official PhpStorm's IDE website says To install a theme, download the corresponging xml file, copy to ~/Library/Preferences/RubyMine10/colors/ (Mac OS X) or C:\Users\%username%.RubyMine10\config\colors\ (Windows) and restart RubyMine. Then go to IDE Settings | Editor | Colors and select your theme. However, nothing is said about Ubuntu. I tried to find anything similar to "Library" folder inside of PhpStorm folder but failed. How can I install the theme?

• Battling Emacs Pinky?

  My problem is not so much emacs pinky as much as having to work with multiple machines, across 3 operating systems, both desktop and laptop, with differing keyboard layouts and different locations for Ctrl and Alt\Meta keys so I often have to pause and think about where is the Ctrl key on this machine. How do you deal with varying keyboard layouts, between Mac keyboards (mostly the laptops) and PC keyboards (mostly 101 keys in my case, yes the original PC keyboard)? I have turned the Caps lock Key into a Ctrl key (losing the Caps lock function completely rather than swapping with Ctrl) on most of them but still find myself hunting for the original Ctrl labeled key most of the time. How do you deal with this keyboard confusion? Suggestions, ideas and feedback welcome.

  I have setup wake on lan service on my server. Everything works fine on local area network: root@server$: poweroff user@local$ wakeonlan AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF and the server wakes up. AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF is a MAC address of my server, which has IP 192.168.1.2 and hostname: example.com. It is connected to the router, which has IP 192.168.1.1 (public: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) When the server is up, I can ping: ping example.com or login via ssh: ssh [email protected] So far, so good. Now I'm able to wake the server up from local area, but how to wake the server from the remote location? I tried: user@local$ wakeonlan -i xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF, but it does not work (nothing happens;). Do I have to configure my router somehow to forward magic packets? How?

  My laptop has Ubuntu 10.10 and is connected to my router with full internet access, yet I can't ping it from other computers on my LAN. I tried the following: I can successfully ping those other computers from my Ubuntu laptop, so I didn't accidentally connect to someone else's network. I can successfully ping my Ubuntu laptop from itself, though I don't know if that means anything. I haven't messed with iptables at all, so it currently doesn't have any rules set that would cause it to reject anything. I made a DHCP reservation for my laptop's MAC address in my router to make sure I was always using the correct IP address. Please note that I am using a "command line only" install of Ubuntu, so I can't use any GUI network config tools. The reason I want to ping it is because I am trying to run an NFS server on the laptop, yet despite correctly setting it up I cannot access the NFS volume on another computer because it isn't even visible on the network right now.

• Change language encoding for file uploading

  Previously we were running a Wordpress site on a Mac OS Server machine. We had several hundred images with Chinese characters for the image names. Now we're trying to migrate to a Ubuntu system and everything is fine except the images. Every time I try to upload an image with a Chinese name via FTP, I get the following message: "MyImage contains illegal characters. Please choose an appropriate text encoding" I have no idea how to solve this issue, do I need to somehow change the system language encoding in Ubuntu to allow for image uploading? Thanks

  Sorry if this is a repeat, I have been Googling possible answers and have not found one yet. I find my wireless signal is never 100%. Speed is fine, it's the actual signal strength that is the issue. I thought my router was the issue, but the problem was also present at the public library today. I asked the Windows and Mac users around me about their signal strength and they had full signal while mine was medium to low according to WiFiRadar. Is this a Dell problem (Realtek), or an Ubuntu problem I can fix in the terminal?

• How do I simulate overprinting in Adobe Reader?

  On both Mac and Windows when I print a document there is an advanced screen that allows me to select an option called Simulate Overprinting, however such an option doesn't appear on the Ubuntu version. Wikipedia on overprinting: Overprinting refers to the process of printing one colour on top of another in reprographics. This is closely linked to the reprographic technique of 'trapping'. Another use of overprinting is to create a rich black (often regarded as a colour that is "blacker than black") by printing black over another dark colour. This is an issue for us, as we're trying to print documents that need flattening (this is what overprinting does). Am I missing something here, is there a way to enable overprinting on printed PDFs? Note: Please don't confuse simulate overprinting with overprint preview, of which doesn't apply when printing. Just to show you what I'm looking for, this is the Print > Advanced screen... And this is what I see on the Ubuntu screen, not no option for overprinting

• Canon Mx772 printer recognized, drivers loaded...but all print jobs "Held"

  BRAND NEW to Ubuntu but loving it so far. I have a Canon MX772 wireless printing running on my network and am able to print fine from a PC and Mac. Using the printers IP, Ubuntu was able to find it and I accepted all of the "recommended" items (it found a Canon MX770 driver). Everything seems to load fine...but the test page does not print, nor does any print commands make it to the printer. If I open the print dialogue jobs are shown as "held" and when I look at the jobs attributes, I see "Job printer state message=cannot specify model number" and then a few lines down "job state reasons=aborted by system". If I try to "resume" it immediately goes back to "held". I can successfully ping the IP of the printer. Would be very appreciative of other ideas...printing is the last check in the box before I am all set up. Thanks!

For seasoned network professional having a MAC address of their own instead of a name :) this might not be that useful. However for a layperson like me this an invaluable resource. • How to efficiently preserve a really big navigation history in Firefox?

  When I was using Mac, my Firefox stored items in its history for really long times. Sometimes I needed to find a link to a site I have seen two years ago and it found it! Also, the autocomplete in the Firefox bar is really great, so a long history and the autocompleting yield a wonderful feature to me. Unfortunately, it seems this does not happen in Ubuntu's Firefox. I looked for solutions but I just got some Firefox developers saying the option of expanding history is out for performance issues and one is well advised to not try to change it (which read to me as saying "we cannot make it work well so we limit the scope"). Anyway, my question is: is there a way of efficiently expand the size of Firefox history? Sorry for my bitterness, but a solution with strings attached (mostly say that I should not do it, like this addon) is not solution for me. Does someone have the same need of mine and found a solution?

  what is the latest version of ubuntu i can run w/ WORKING wifi on my macbook 4,1(early 2008)? i dual booted my mac os x lion alongside 12.10 ubuntu but cant figure how to get the wireless to work? so i downgraded to 10.10 for now.. is 10.10 the latest version i can have on my macbook with working wifi? or is there another? or am i just missing a noobish terminal code to fix the drivers? help appreciated! thanks

• Issue with CSS font color in Webkit in Lion (#444 looks darker than #333)

  I have a strange issue with Safari and Chrome Mac (19.0.1084.54) in OS X Lion. Here it is, very simply put: When I display it in a Webkit browser, text set in Helvetica Neue and color Hex #444 looks a little bolder, and therefore darker, than the same text with an Hex color value of #333. This does not happen at all in Snow Leopard with the exact same browsers (same version). Happens on any website I tried, so I know it's not something related to the CSS of my website. I tried to change it live through the Inspector and it really shows up.   Apple takes 30% of revenue from app sales on the iPhone app store. Now Apple does the same with the Mac app store. Google also takes a 30% cut in the Android Market. These seem pretty steep. What percentage do you think would be fair and good for both you as a developer/vendor and Apple/Google? What's a happier middle ground? 20%? If the answer you give is less than 30% but you are selling apps in the app store or android market, please explain why you are willing to, and what benefits Apple and Google would see from reducing their cuts.

  This might be a tricky question but here is the objective: Manage to mount a disk/partition automatically without (or at least trying to avoid): Editing any Samba configuration file Editing the fstab file and to make it a little bit harder, this needs to be done with the options for "Mount Options" in the Disk Utility: Note that if left as it is, every time a user mounts a partition/disk and then tries to share a folder in it, Windows users can see the share but can not access it, with a permission warning appearing. The point of all of this is to find the most user friendly (Oriented towards a GUI) way of enabling a partition to be mounted, accessed by the local user (Read, Write, Execute) and to also be able to, when needed, share a folder and have no problems reading/writing on it from another Ubuntu/Windows/Mac remote computer (Assuming both are in the same LAN network).
