What would be some possible ways to find openings? How should I contact them? (E-mail, phone, etc.) Should I prepare and submit a CV? I feel it might be a little dull as it would have no experience or references. After contacting someone about an internship, should I follow up, or just wait for them to contact me? I've been told that if I wanted to learn how to develop iPhone/iPad applications, I should buy a Mac since Apple has all it's development tools for iPhone/iPad on Mac. Now, what about Android phones / tablets? Are the development tools better on Mac or PC? I need to buy a new laptop, and I would like to factor in mobile development in my choice of PC or Mac.

• Opensource package for securly allowing users to log in and provide information

  I have a site written in mostly php and html. I also have a sql database of personal information like names and addresses. I would like my users to be able to log in to my website with a login I can email or snail mail to them, and view and edit their information on my database. Users can currently enter information online I and store it in my database but they can't view or edit stored information. I can add the code to do this, but when I give users the ability to view information I suddenly have a lot more security concerns. Is there an open source package to deal with allowing users to do something like this? Or is there an established convention for this? I know this is a pretty basic question, and there might be some good literature about it that I have yet to find, so if someone can just point me in the direction of some of that information, or better yet give me firsthand some information about this that would be great.

• Numlock doesn't work after logging in

  I've a strange problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 The Numlock of my Apple Keyboard (white, wired) doesn't work anymore. Strange thing because it works with the guest account but not with my user account. I did change the lightdm.conf to get the numlock working for the login and it works, but nor in my user account. Even stranger, pushing zero effects a right click? I also tried different keyboard layouts, but it shows Numlock on (stuck on) but doesn't work. Any idea which config file stores information about this?

  I'd like to find a definitive solution to automatically keep my Thunderbird profile in sync between my laptop and my desktop computer. I'm using IMAP, so keeping the e-mail itself in sync is not an issue I can use Ubuntu One for the contacts, so that should not be an issue, either. However, there are a bunch of other files and folders in the Thunderbird profile, and I'm not sure which ones I should keep in sync and which ones I shouldn't bother about. Ideally, I'd like to use Ubuntu One to mark the required ones for syncing, but I would appreciate any help in deciding which ones exactly need to be synced.

• Override Built-In Maverick Keyboard Shortcuts

  Having used the Command+M keyboard shortcut to minimize windows in OS X, I'd like to use the same functionality in Ubuntu 10.10. When I try, though, it only brings up the "communications" section of the indicator applet; like so: In the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences, I have set as the minimize shortcut "Mod4+M", which I got by capturing the Apple "Command" key and the "M" key. I find no other shortcut using this key combination in Keyboard Shortcuts, and yet I cannot get the window to minimize when using it. Does anyone know how to override Ubuntu's default usage of this key combination? Thanks!

• Why is Android VM-based? [closed]

  By about 2004, it was clear that ARM is the clear winner for mobile CPUs, beating out MIPS, SH3, and DragonBall. PocketPC (Windows Mobile) applications was natively-compiled (at least most of them - except for .NET compact and its competitors). Likewise, Apple's iOS (named iPhone OS at the time) prefers natively-compiled applications. Then why Android chose a virtual machine based system stack? (the Dalvik VM). Wouldn't it be simpler to just compile applications down to ARM code using GCJ or something? Is the decision influenced by the J2ME-way of doing things, or was just because it's "cool"? Perhaps like most things Java, the culture that prefers multiple levels of indirection and abstractions, they just added another layer of abstraction for "just in case"?

• Do employers hiring for software jobs care about the classes you took in a Computer Science Masters program?

  I'm torn between two classes right now for next semester (Software Design and Advanced Computer Graphics). I would enjoy Advanced Computer Graphics more, but I feel the software design class would help me when approaching anything I ever build for the rest of my career. I feel though I could just buy the book (I already have both books actually) of the Software Design class and go through it, if I wanted. But think it would be a bit tougher to pick up the Advanced Computer Graphics class on my own. So do employers look at the graduate classes you've taken to decide if you would be a good fit or not? I think, more importantly, what I'm wanting to know is if I wanted to work for a high-end software company like Apple or Google would a company like that be more impressed by someone that took software engineering classes or hardcore CS classes?

  I noticed that every developer implements a somewhat different flowchart for solving programming problems. By flowchart I mean a defined system of techniques that the developer goes through in a certain sequence, trying to solve the problem at hand. Some examples for techniques: Google "how to..." or "... tutorial". Search the java/msdn/apple/etc API doc for the specific class or method. Search in stack overflow the exact problem with some tags like [iphone]/[java] etc. Take a nap and let the subconscious work. Debug. Draw the algorithm or system. Google the logged error message. Ask a colleague or manager. Ask a new question in stack overflow. From your experience, what is the best flowchart for solving a programming problem?

  We recently ordered a laptop for an employee.  It was delivered yesterday and we realized it had no web cam and wasn’t the 1080p resolution.  He wasn’t happy. So, this morning, I sent an e-mail to our rep and asked him what we could do.  Within an hour or two, he called me, arranged a replacement laptop with the corrected specs, set up a return and had everything arranged and charged us only for the difference.  No pain, no silly questions.  We won’t loose use of the laptop either.  The return and the new laptop will overlap so that we can just pack up the old laptop in the box of the new one, slap some labels on and away we go. • How can I access profile fields with a % variable in Drupal Actions?

  I have an action setup in drupal to e-mail me when a new user registers for the site. Right now it is only telling me their user name (%username). Is there a variable that can access added fields so I can get their real name (First Last), or another way to add this info to the action message? So instead of my new user action having a message like: "%username created an account" - "jschmoe created and account" I could have: "%first_name %last_name (%username) created an account" - "Joe Schmoe (jschmoe) created an account". I'm using Content Profile module for the first and last name fields, though have few enough users at the moment that I could switch to Profile module fields.

  I just upgraded to 12.10. Everything appears to go well but I am unable to connect to the Internet. The LAN is fine and I can view my shared files but no e-mail or access to web pages. We are in the same time zone, but definitely remote. I have not met the team yet, but will be flying up there soon. What is your best advice for integrating and developing with this team? It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate? • Floppy Drive not recognised

  I am a newbie with Ubuntu during the past two weeks, and I believe, that I have made good progress so far. Current setup tasks are completed, like: "Wireless Network, Printer, Thunderbird + Firefox, e-mail", also my local weather station - all setup. Updated files and rearranged the desktop to my liking. The problem I have now is my floppy drive which is not recognized, but the activity light is shown on constantly. I have downloaded the "MakeFloppyDriveAvailableToEveryone" and i am confident that I can follow the instructions to change the floppy drive. However, I do not have an existing fd0 file in /dev/???, but only /dev/fd/ files 0 to 46. Please advise.
