• Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

  Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview?   The Arduino IDE is based on a java application called processing. While typing text into processing, it refuses to accept any of the characters under dead keys like " ' ^. As a work around I: Open another window (usually my browser or mail client); I type the character I need; Select and copy the character onto my clip board; Copy the character into processing. What do I have to do to make processing accept characters under dead keys? Disabling dead keys is not an option.

  I have a site which runs phpBB, on this site I have enabled user authentication through email when registering enabled captcha However I still get spam users every 20 to 30 minutes. Is there anything I can do to prevent this with the ucp.php file? I have already loaded a large list of IP addresses yet there are spam users registering all the time. One thing I can do is I can check the bounce mail to find the username and can pipe bounced mails to a php script and immediately delete that user, but I have not got any bounce back from hotmail or some other email clients. So this way it will catch hold of a certain percent of spam users but there are still a huge amount of users spamming. What else can I do to prevent spammers abusing my phpBB site?

• Synchronizing (updating) published files

  How can I update a published file and maintain the same URL? After saving an update of a published file on my desktop, it will automatically "synchronise" with the corresponding files at UbuntuOne (and it does). Problem is that the "new file", actually the updated file with the same name, is no longer published. Pressing the publish button results is a new URL. I now have to mail new URL's and change embedded links, as old URL will result in a failure to find the updated file (or indeed any file). I am not sure if it is a bug or a design flaw (maybe intentional?), but it seems strange to me.

  I'm on ubuntu 12.04. Recently I bought a cheap apple style bluetooth keyboard. It pairs OK. I paired it with the current 102 key still attached. Anyway I noticed that the character mapping is incorrect. Most keys do not type anything - some keys on the right (k, l, ;') etc give numbers, but that's about it. So I rebooted, with 102 kbd unattached, and the bluetooth keyboard on, ready to connect. After boot at the login screen, the bluetooth keyboard had paired. I typed my password, and it logged in fine!! However after the user login was complete it reverted to the broken behaviour. A glance at the layout chart shows ubuntu thinks I still have the 102 layout, even though it remained disconnected. Any ideas? Thanks, Dave

  My app uses a tab bar controller. In the user documentation, I'm not sure what name to use for a view that lives under a tab. For example, the app has a Settings tab. In the user documentation, I have a sentence that goes something like this: This threshold can be adjusted in the Settings tab. "Settings tab" is not terribly user-friendly. What would be a better term than "tab"? I've looked though Apple's Human Interface Guideline, but I can't find what would be the official user-friendly term for "view that lives under a tab".

• Temporary R+W CIFS share for non-root accounts?

  I want to set up a cross platform mail client (Thunderbird), and so far I want to use NAS as a profile store. The NAS is CIFS based, and can be mounted on both Windows and Ubuntu. Also the locking works fine for mutex, and setup seems to work as a proof of concept. The problem is the Linux mount. Since I'm using a laptop, I'm not always connected to network, hence, I can't use the /etc/fstab to set up CIFS share with a modified group id. And the share has to be mounted using mount -t cifs ..., which causes it to be owned by root, and owned so badly, that it can't be chowned to the regular user account. This causes read only issues for Thunderbird, which seem to be solved if Thunderbird is launched via sudo. But I would like to avoid that and use a script to mount the share on-demand to a profile location, with profile based privileges and access rights. Is there a way to achieve that?

• Override Built-In Maverick Keyboard Shortcuts

  Having used the Command+M keyboard shortcut to minimize windows in OS X, I'd like to use the same functionality in Ubuntu 10.10. When I try, though, it only brings up the "communications" section of the indicator applet; like so: In the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences, I have set as the minimize shortcut Mod4+M, which I got by capturing the Apple Command key and the M key. I find no other shortcut using this key combination in Keyboard Shortcuts, and yet I cannot get the window to minimize when using it. Does anyone know how to override Ubuntu's default usage of this key combination? Thanks!

• Grub failure after cat removed USB drive

  I had a perfectly working Ubuntu Server system with U12.4 and Server installed and was setting up the mail system. When I was absent from my computer room my cat (furry type) apparently got to play with a USB dongle on an extension cable and removed it. The system went berserk and now will not boot. I ran Ubuntu 12.4 on the install disk and the directory structure and every thing appears to still be on the drives. How do I recover the GRUB boot section without the system repartitioning everything and wiping everything else? Please I am a total newb when it comes to Linux errors and fixing them.

  I am designing a trading card game for mobiles, with the possibility to add cards to your collection using Gems, aquired through victories and inapp purchases. I am thinking to increase the spread of the game with a tracking system on game invites, enabling the user to invite a friend to play the game. If the friend doesn't own the game client (which is free) he will be offered to download it. If he joins the game, the original player earns X amount of gems as an reward. There can only be one player per mobile device, which should rule out some harvesting. My question is, how do you think the structure of this would be recieved ? All invites are mail based, unless the player already exists in the game world (then he gets a ingame invitation.) I have set a flood filter, so a player can only invite a friend (without the client installed) once a month.

  May 31, 2014 was the official deadline for U.S.-listed companies to disclose use of conflict minerals to the SEC. Of the estimated 6,000 companies that were required to file audits of their tin, gold, tungsten or tantalum in their products, only 1,300 filed reports, and these results have revealed the ongoing challenges that many manufacturers are having complying with this legislation. An article authored by IDC analyst Heather Ashton,"Conflict Minerals Reporting Passes a Notable Milestone" notes that many leading companies such as Intel, Apple and HP filed their reports ahead of the deadline, but other companies are struggling with trying to trace their supply chain back to raw materials, especially as many non-U.S. based suppliers have no legal requirement to comply with the law since they are not U.S.-listed companies.   In my first iPad Gen1 and iPad Gen2 I received a 10W charger.  When you plugged in your devices to a lower rated source It would display a msg box telling you the device could not charge from that source.It seem now the latest update for the iPad minis permits the larger brother iPad2 to charge from the 5w charger.I will take longer!  However you are no longer stranded by a limited division of which charger can charge the apple devices -  as they all can, just at different rate now.Try it yourself and let me know if you charge the 3 and 4 with the 5w iphone ipod adapters.Peace,Kosher Koder.
