• Do employers hiring for software jobs care about the classes you took in a Computer Science Masters program?

  I'm torn between two classes right now for next semester (Software Design and Advanced Computer Graphics). I would enjoy Advanced Computer Graphics more, but I feel the software design class would help me when approaching anything I ever build for the rest of my career. I feel though I could just buy the book (I already have both books actually) of the Software Design class and go through it, if I wanted. But think it would be a bit tougher to pick up the Advanced Computer Graphics class on my own. So do employers look at the graduate classes you've taken to decide if you would be a good fit or not? I think, more importantly, what I'm wanting to know is if I wanted to work for a high-end software company like Apple or Google would a company like that be more impressed by someone that took software engineering classes or hardcore CS classes?

• Where to hire a scenario writer for a small interactive story game?

  I need a scenario for a small dialog-based game / interactive story. The game would be used as an example for a middleware tool we're developing. I would like to buy an existing story (it should be dynamic of course — with branching dialogs etc.), or hire someone to write a new one. Please advise, where to go to find such person / service? We're based in Russia, so getting a talented enough native English writer locally is a bit of a problem. Update: To be extra clear: We must get all necessary rights to reuse the story and make a derived work (i.e. the game we're talking about) from it. This is a commercial product. Borrowing someone else's work at random and using it just not going to work.

• sell applications that run only on a GPL v2 Server

  I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. • Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 - 100% CPU usage alternating between cores

  I've noticed my Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 has been getting a bit sluggish lately - things like Gnome Shell overview animation are jerky where they were lightning fast, Elder Scrolls Online is stuttering and dropping to low FPS where I previously had a solid 50-60 fps. Out of interest I looked at the CPU History, and when running nothing but the system monitor, I was getting this: That was 15 minutes ago. The 100% load seemed to be alternating between the cores. PC specs: i3 2130 processor. 8gb DDR3 RAM. ASUS P8-Z77M motherboard. Samsung 128gb SSD I've been trying to reproduce the problem, and while I'm not getting the 100% any more at idle, the system monitor is showing an average load of about 20-30%, that's with just Chrome and the System Monitor open. Oddly, if I touch nothing, it'll average out to about 20% - if I start moving the mouse around and do some typing, it's closer to 40%. Is this normal? Any help appreciated, I wouldn't even know where to start here..

• Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

  Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through. • 12.04 indicates filesystem check on next boot, but never does one

  Just installed 12.04 32 bit on my machine, with 3 drives. However, if I reboot, I never see it doing a disk check on boot up, like I used to see with 10.10. Note, after install, I was not seeing the grub menu on boot. I made a ISO disk with BootRepair and now I get the normal grub menu. Any idea as to why the disk check is not happening on boot (I know I can boot a Live CD and then check the disk - I just want the check on boot working)?

• So with HTML5 what exactly.....is "supposed" to become phased out.

  So I know HTML5 is the "replacement" for Flash...however it's obviously not mainstream just yet......but what else is it supposed to replace. I ask this because web-dev has always been a secret kinda side-passion of mine (even though I a firmware programmer mostly doing C/Java stuff). And anyway I want to pursue a side thing at doing web design (I know basic XHTML/CSS + some CSS3) But what exactly is I guess...."pointless" to study? JavaScript I assume will always be a huge part of web design? (HTML5 isn't replacing that is it?) What about Ajax and CSS itself?) And then there's Flash....not sure if thats really worth putting effort into? Also there's Adobe Flex/Air......I'm a bit confused if you can't tell.

• Earning extra cash as a programmer

  I work as fulltime programmer and have a pretty well paid job for the country where I live, but I could do with a bit of extra cash at the moment (wife nagging about new kitchen etc.). I'd be interested in taking on small projects in my spare time. I'm not interested in writing malware or get rich quick schemes. I've checked out a few sites programmer freelance sites, but the projects all see to be very poorly paid or people that want malware creating (or both). Are there any good freelancing sites that I may have missed? Are there any other ways to find small freelance projects?

• What is a good method for coloring textures based on a palette in XNA?

  I've been trying to work on a game with the look of an 8-bit game using XNA, specifically using the NES as a guide. The NES has a very specific palette and each sprite can use up to 4 colors from that palette. How could I emulate this? The current way I accomplish this is I have a texture with defined values which act as indexes to an array of colors I pass to the GPU. I imagine there must be a better way than this, but maybe this is the best way? I don't want to simply make sure I draw every sprite with the right colors because I want to be able to dynamically alter the palette. I'd also prefer not to alter the texture directly using the CPU.

• Unbuntu stuck at boot after update

  Well, I installed Ubuntu 11.10 via Wubi on my MSI U270. Everything was running fine, I even got fglrx working after I manually downloaded a .run and executed it. Then I thought of running the complete updates that were on the update manager. I did run it, it took a whole night to complete, I waited a bit as the part came where I had to click on "Restart now". I clicked it, after that I'm stuck at the purple screen with all dots lighted orange. I've been waiting for it to start up for more than half an hour, and there used to be occasional HDD blinks which isn't happening now. Should I reboot? Edit: After the restart not while restarting, forgot to mention that and by the way, is there a way to see anything that's happening just so I know that it ain't stuck?

• Letting go of a project

  I've been the sole developer of a niche product for my company for nearly 6 years. I've grown quite attached to the project and I enjoy working on it. However, it was the decision of management to take the project out of my hands and move it under the wings of another team. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time letting go of the project. I'm sad to see it leave my hands since I've put so much time into it and enjoyed working on it, but it also allows me to work on new things. I've even caught myself being a bit hostile to the other team, which is poor on my part. How can I convince myself to just let it go?

• Rhythmbox iPod Issues?

  basically, when I try and drag a song from my library to any one of my iPods (Classic (2.0.4 Mac), Touch (3.1.2. (7D11)) and Shuffle), nothing happens. It would appear that everything went ok, but... when I go to the iPod's library, the song is not there. When trying to transfer the file, there is no error etc. to suggest something that went wrong, and so I can't file a bug report on Launchpad etc. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Cheers guys! EDIT: I forgot to add that I'm running a 64-bit install of Ubuntu 12.04LTS and that Amarok and gtkpod don't even recognise that any devices are plugged in. Thanks.

• Pppoe wireless connection, Ubuntu 12.4

  I recently bought a new computer (Asus 1015 cx) with Ubuntu (12.4) as preinstalled system. My problem is with the internet. The computer connects just fine to the free wifi we have at home, but in college, we have a little bit different system. There is wifi, but it is not free - everyone receives a user name and a password. I cant manage to estabilish this Pppoe connection - the computer "sees" where can it connect, but I dont know where to write my username and password. It is not the DSL connection, what I have already tried. Can you help me?

• Guide to installing a fully encrypted file system?

  I have a little Netbook on which I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 (32-Bit) on. However, since it is a portable PC I want to completely encrypt the file system (in case of theft). Currently it runs Windows 7 Starter and I use TrueCrypt which installs a custom boot loader that asks for the password. I remember from the past that Linux can do that as well by putting /boot on it's own, unencrypted partition. Since it's been ages since I last worked with file system encryption (I remember setting up LVM and a custom patched grub to ask for the password) I wonder how that would work nowadays and if there is a step-by-step how-to for it?

• How do I get my RTL8192ce based wireless device working properly?

  I am using the rtl8192cu chipset (on a Belkin wireless USB adapter N300) combined with 64 bit architecture and the 3.8 kernel. Some of you may know that this doesn't work. I tried this fix - RTL8188CU USB Network Adaptor on ubuntu 13.04 and now my internet is super slow. I am totally new to Ubuntu and I am concerned I do not have the right driver. The "stock" driver was the RTL8192cu, but it didn't connect 99% of the time and if it did the upload speed was higher than the download. Right now I am connecting through my laptop with a crossover cable, so my internet connection is just fine in my apartment. Relevant output from lsusb is here: Bus 002 Device 002: ID 050d:2103 Belkin Components F7D2102 802.11n N300 Micro Wireless Adapter v3000 [Realtek RTL8192CU] (bonus question: is that [050d:2103] the actual physical address straight from the hardware? • How to support tableless columns with WYSIWYG editor?

  On the front page of a site I'm working on there's a small slideshow. It's not for pictures in particular, any content can go in, and I'm currently setting up the editing interface for the client. I'd like to be able to have one/two/more columns in the editable area, and ideally that would be via CSS - does anyone know of a WYSIWYG editor that supports this? I'm using Drupal (would prefer not to involve Panels as it would require a bit of work to make it a streamlined workflow for content entry) in case that matters to anyone. To start the ball rolling, one way would be to use templates. I know CKEditor supports templates, and it looks like TinyMCE might have something similar. I don't know how well these work with tableless columns (the CKEditor homepage demo uses tables to achieve its two column effect). Holding out for a cool solution!

• Boot time seems unusually long on MSI GX660R (bootchart included)

  After upgrading (clean install) to Ubuntu 12.04, the speed issue when running programs has reduced on my MSI GX660R laptop. However, the boot time is still much longer (over a minute, even after BIOS) than on the many less powerful laptops I have encountered running the same OS, and I was wondering if anyone could help me improve it. I use the FGLRX driver, if that makes any difference. I have uploaded a boot chart, it can be found here http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/bootchartl.png/ As you can see, the boot time is over a minute even after BIOS. A 'designed for Vista' laptop from ages ago which I installed Ubuntu on boots in around thirty seconds, so I think it's a bit strange. • How to run Java application in KDE with Qt-like UI?

  Continuing my question in Install Ubuntu or Kubuntu? I have tried Kubuntu (KDE), and it was very cool as cool as Ubuntu (GNOME). but there is little problem with its user interface when we start Java application (LimeWire, Netbeans, Eclipse). User interface changed to Metal, (which I think is a bit old school). Can we run it with Qt like UI?, such as when we start Java application in Gnome (run with GTK like UI/emulation GTK like UI)? I hear there is a class for Java in order to make Java application UI like Qt, called the Qt/Jambi bindings for Java. How can we integrate it in KDE when we start Java application? My other question is if not wrong, OpenOffice was built in Java,so why OpenOffice can run with Qt like UI in KDE?

• ecommerce options for 5-6 products [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Ecommerce Script Should I Use? We're looking to develop a simple e-commerce solution to sell 5-6 products. We'd rather not have to use PayPal's buttons (buy it now!) if there's an existing alternative, but would also for budget/time constraints don't want to roll our own. Are there any small, basic ecommerce solutions available that would allow this? I did look at Foxy Cart but the monthly fee was a bit of a turn off. (I must sound extremely fussy I'm aware!) Something like Zen would just be overkill for our needs. Thanks for any suggestions.

  Since I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 I'd only missed one thing. A program which could launch typewriter sounds while typing. For instance, in Windows I used this: http://www.colorpilot.com/soundpilot.html for a long time. I learned then that this writing program: http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/ had the sounds but only for the program itself. However, sometimes I'm writing an email, writing on the web or doing more complex writing tasks in LibreOffice - all places where these long missed typing sounds don't apply. Does any of you know of any plans in the community of the sound bit - typing sounds - as an independent program or applet to be fetched in the Ubuntu Software Center soon? The Rhythm Of Creative Writing would really be helped then! ;-)
