ergonomics: what's better; trackball, ergonomic mouse or some other pointing device (a-la touchscree

So I bit into the hype and recently purchased an apple wireless keyboard and that evil bar-of-soap thing apple makes for a mouse. Couple of hundred dollars later and this is where I begin to worry about RSI. Go figure. Don't get me wrong, this apple mouse is genius and looks pretty as hell, but my right wrist feels tired after a full day's worth of work, so i'm thinking of switching. Anyone out there use a trackball? is this worse? should I get a super-ergonomic mouse instead? I've seen mouse-trackball combos but am not sold, they still elicit the same end-finger behaviour detrimental for RSI, right? I also have a wrist-rest mousepad, but couldn't find one suitable for my keyboard. I've even considered having a small touchscreen where the mousepad should go, no mouse (or alternatively, a usb trackpad). Just looking for ideas, is the trackball better than the mouse? /mpRead the article

Using a Generic Repository pattern with fluent nHibernate

I'm currently developing a medium sized application, which will access 2 or more SQL databases, on different sites etc... I am considering using something similar to this: http://mikehadlow.blogspot.com/2008/03/using-irepository-pattern-with-linq-to.html However, I want to use fluent nHibernate, in place of Linq-to-SQL (and of course nHibernate.Linq) Is this viable? How would I go about configuring this? Where would my mapping definitions go etc...? This application will eventually have many facets - from a WebUI, WCF Library and Windows applications / services. Also, for example on a "product" table, would I create a "ProductManager" class, that has methods like: GetProduct, GetAllProducts etc... Any pointers are greatly received.Read the article

authbind, privbind or iptables REDIRECT (port 80 to 8080)?

Hi, I'd like to run Glassfish v3 as a non-privileged user on Linux (Debian), but make it available on port 80. I'm currently doing this with iptables: iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp -d x.x.x.x --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 8080 This works, but I wonder: If this has any significant performance impact compared to binding directly to port 80 If I could make a similar setup also work for HTTPS (or if that must run on 443) If there's a way to avoid other users from binding to port 8080 (in case my server crashes) - maybe block that port permanently to other users somehow? ...or if I should use authbind/privbind instead? Problem: I couldn't make it work with authbind or privbind so far. For authbind, I edited asadmin's last line to: exec authbind --deep "$JAVA" -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -jar ... For privbind: exec privbind -u glassfish "$JAVA" -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -jar ... (Only) with these settings, I can successfully perform a create-domain --domainport 80. This proves, that authbind and privbind actually work (the authbind version of the script is called by the glassfish user; the privbind version is called by root of course). However, in both cases I get the following exception, when starting the domain (start-domain): [#|2010-03-20T13:25:21.925+0100|SEVERE|glassfishv3.0|javax.enterprise.system.core.com.sun.enterprise.v3.server|_ThreadID=11;_ThreadName=FelixStartLevel;|Shutting down v3 due to startup exception : Permission denied: 80=com.sun.enterprise.v3.services.impl.monitor.MonitorableSelectorHandler@1fc25e5|#] I haven't found a solution for that yet (after searching the web, it seems, that this isn't so easy?) Debugging FLEX/AS3 memory leaks

I have a pretty big Flex & Papervision3D application that creates and destroys objects continually. It also loads and unloads SWF resource files too. While it's running the SWF slowly consumes memory til about 2GB when it croaks the player. Obviously I am pretty sure I let go of reference to instances I no longer want with expectation the GC will do its job. But I am having a heck of a time figuring out where the problem lies. I've tried using the profiler and its options for capturing memory snapshots, etc - but my problem remains evasive. I think there are known problems using debug Flash player also? But I get no joy using the release version either. How do you go about tracking down memory leak problems using FLEX/AS3 ? What are some strategies, tricks, or tools you have used to locate consumptionRead the article

How to Redirect Visual Studio F12 Shortcut Key to Object Browser in C# Project

For C# projects, I would like to have the F12 "Go to Definition" shortcut key to open the Object Browser and select the type under the cursor position. This is the behavior for VB.NET projects, which I really like. I think the Object Browser is more helpful than IntelliSense in some cases. I really do not need a text representation of the metadata. How do I duplicate the F12 / "Go to Definition" functionality in a C# project? Is there a different shortcut key for C#? I am not talking about the Alt+Ctrl+J shortcut key that displays the Object Browser.Read the article

Workflows for User Profile properties

Hi Guys, I have a requirement from a client with regards to user profile properties. The requirement is as follows: We would like to setup custom user profile properties such that these values are editable by individuals via their my site. When a user edits this user profile property value, it should not be immediately visible to other users that happen to go to the individual's my site, but rather go through an approval workflow. If the value submitted is approved the user profile property value is updated. As far as I know this is not possible. iphone settings disappear

I have created an app which uses Application Settings and user defaults following the example in the book "Beginning iPhone Development". In some cases my settings seem to disappear. If I launch the simulator I can go into settings and see it, I can then open my app and my settings can be read from within the app. If I then leave my app and go back into the settings screen I can no longer see the settings for my app! I'm new to iPhone dev, is there something obvious that I'm overlooking? Thanks.Read the article

I am trying to configure my message endpoint mapping in my NServiceBus configuration by sending messages from different namespaces to different endpoints. As such, I have configured the following in my web.config: However, when my application starts, I receive the following exception: Spring.Objects.PropertyAccessExceptionsException: PropertyAccessExceptionsException (1 errors); nested PropertyAccessExceptions are: [Spring.Core.TypeMismatchException: Cannot convert property value of type [System.Collections.Hashtable] to required type [System.Collections.IDictionary] for property 'MessageOwners'., Inner Exception: System.ArgumentException: Problem loading message assembly: Company.Messages.Payments --- System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Company.Messages.Payments' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. File name: 'Company.Messages.Payments' What I find interesting is that it seems to have found Company.Messages.Accounts but failed on the second configured line. I thought that maybe it didn't like have them all go to the same endpoint, but changing this configuration to have them go different endpoints didn't change the error message I received. Is it easier to write a recursive-descent parser using an EBNF or a BNF?

I've got a BNF and EBNF for a grammar. The BNF is obviously more verbose. I have a fairly good idea as far as using the BNF to build a recursive-descent parser; there are many resources for this. I am having trouble finding resources to convert an EBNF to a recursive-descent parser. Is this because it's more difficult? I recall from my CS theory classes that we went over EBNFs, but we didn't go over converting them into a recursive-descent parser. We did go over converting BNF's into a recursive-descent parser. The reason I'm asking is because the EBNF is more compact. From looking at the EBNF's in general, I notice that terms enclosed between { and } can be converted into a while loop. Where to start on creating finger swipe navigation in an collection of items

Lets say I want to make a control to select any integer number by dragging on a "bar" with numbers: (156 is selected) Mousedown on "159" and dragging towards the left and then doing mouseup changes the control to this: (160 is selected) I've been experimenting for the past 3 hours but I'm inexperienced in Silverlight so I'm having problems getting started. My current guess is I should seperate this into 2 steps: Step 1: Build this control without swiping behavior. Just 2 buttons to go up a number or go down a number Step 2: Replace the buttons by handling mouse events. With my limited knowledge I think I would manage building a crappy control that does this, with very messy xaml and c# and lots of headaches when trying to apply styling and fancy state transitions, but I was hoping some xaml wizards could get me started with the basic approach? How to construct a flowchart/storyboard in a Func Spec

Hey I'm a bit embarrassed to write a post on this topic, but I would appreciate the help. At my school, the CS kids (myself included) have created a nice, little program that is built for incoming Chem/Bio students. It consists of several modules that reviews topics they should have a firm grasp on before they start their classes. It's a nice tool since it cuts down on reviewing the material in class but also allows the students to do a quick diagnostic to fix any problems. Now, I'm in charge of constructing a simple interface that reports on the progress of the group and individual students. The interface is pretty simple. It's just a window that pops up, and it has three tabs: the first tab is a "cumulative" report of all of students. The secnod tab has a drop down box that lists the students and once a student is selected, a report for him/her comes up. And the third tab is simply a description of all of the terms used in the 1st and 2nd tabs. Now, I'm trying to be a good CS student and write a func. spec for my interface. My problem comes with the fact that I'd like to insert a little flowchart using Visio. Problem is, and I'm quite embarrassed to admit this, I don't know how to construct the flowchart/storyboard. For instance, I know I start with a "Start/Click Icon" in a rectangle. Then where do I go? Do I draw three arrrows (one going to each tab) and then describing what goes on? In tab one, the only thing that happens is that the user will select a "sort" method in the drop down box. This will sort the list. The End. Similarly, if the user selects the second tab, then he will go to a drop down box with the student names. Selecting a name will bring up student info. And the third tab is just a list of unfamiliar terms coming from the first or second tab. I wanted to storyboard/flowchart what I'm doing, but I'm unclear how to go about it. Any help would be appreciated! (Just to clarify, I'm not having trouble with using Visio, but I don't know how one goes about construct a storyboard or determining the procedure for constructing one)Read the article

Apache httpd Problem

Hey, I am getting intermittent issues with my site. Pages often hang with huge loading times and sometimes fail to load. Validation plugin hijacks click function?

Absolute newbie question, any help is highly appreciated :) I am using curvycorners (http://www.curvycorners.net/) in combination with the jQuery validation plugin (http://bassistance.de/jquery-plugins/jquery-plugin-validation/), and I'm having problems getting the div to redraw the rounded corners when I do like this: $("input[type='submit']").click(function(e) { curvyCorners.redraw(); }); When I click the submit-button the first time the form validates, the validation error-message pops up and expands the div, causing the layout to go ugly. However when I click on it the second time the rounded corners redraw nicely. Could it be that my validation plugin hijacks my initial click? How do I go about this? log4net: what am I doing wrong?

Being a log4net newb / boob I just copied lines from an NHibernate example project where I can see the log.txt file is updated. Is there a quick answer why mine isn't creating the file? Language Design: Combining Gotos and Functions

I'm designing and currently rethinking a low-level interpreted programming language with similarities to assembler. I very soon came across the functions/loops/gotos decision problem and thought that while loops like while and for would be too high-level and unfitting, gotos would be too low level, unmaintainable and generally evil again. Functions like you know them from most languages that have return values and arguments aren't fitting in the language's concept either. So I tried to figure out something between a function and a goto which is capable of Recursion Efficient loops After some thinking I came up with the idea of subroutines: They have a beginning and an end like a function They have a name but no arguments like a goto You can go into one with jump and go out of it again before its end with return (doesn't give back any result, only stops the subroutine) Handled just like normal code - Global scope like goto So I wanted to know: Is the idea above good? What are the (dis)advantages? Would there be a better combination of function and goto or even a completely new idea?Read the article

PhantomJS not exactly rendering HTML to PNG

I'm having trouble adjusting PhantomJS to create a PNG file that matches the original browser presentation. Here is the entire sample html file. It's a sankey diagram creating using rCharts and d3-sankey. (You'll need to save the file to your hard drive and view it from there.) My company has a project to create a magazine style site with user profile functionality. We need: CMS for the article publishing. SEO Friendly urls. Commenting capability for the published articles. User profile system with limited social networking functionality (friends,friend messages,blog,account tweaking/personalization, article commenting) My area of expertise is asp.net, particularly MVC. I have read similar posts on this site regarding CMS with MVC and I'm surveying the landscape (N2, Kooboo, MvcCms, etc). What I am really interested in knowing is whether there are any platforms out there (WAMP or LAMP) that provide this functionality out of the box. I may be willing to go the LAMP route if it requires little development work. If I have to crack open any code then it probably needs to be .net unless there are compelling reasons to go another route.Read the article

Proper way to bind WCF webservice to both HTTP (for dev) and HTTPS (for production)

Seems like this would be fairly straightfoward but I can't figure it out. In lieu of using an ASMX web service, I'm trying to go with WCF.. and finding it hard to figure out bindings. I would like to be able to use HTTP to connect to the WCF service for local development (and on our "staging" server), but require HTTPS on our production server. Should this be possible with two bindings? I cannot get it to work. If someone could provide an example of just a very basic HTTP and HTTPS WCF setup, I'd be eternally grateful. Or point me to a book/website/etc. which solves all the mysteries of WCF.. that'd be great. Because right now it's looking easier to just go back to ASMX.Read the article
