• NO-SQL reliable for small bussines app?

  I'm deciding between go for a NON-SQL engine or a regular SQL one for a document managment system for small bussines. I have experience with firebird/sql server and found a good track of reliability (specially with firebird). This market is full of crappy "servers" (clon-made PC, the mayority), cheap harddisk, rarely use of RAID or anything like that, some are in locations where a power-off is normal, some not have a UPS, etc... (I will include off-site auto-backup to external servers, but that no change the internal setup). (I know about end-user education about such proper setups, but is stupid depend on that, so stick to te point) From the desing point of view, a schema-less database is the way to go for my system, but, I worry if any of the actual solutions (MongoDb, Tokyo Cabinet, etc) are like firebird and survice crash, malfunctions & abuse so data corruption is very rare. The plan is store the office documents there & provide a central repository.

• Body of email breaks distribution list in exchange?

  Hi, I have a very odd problem that I'm not sure is a programming issue or a server issue :-p. Basically I'm sending an email to an exchange distribution list that includes a PHP stack trace; during certain faults the trace includes really high level information such as the machine's environment variables (during file reads, etc.). I went through a copy of the email line by line until the email sent and it appears the line: [SUDO_COMMAND] => /etc/init.d/httpd restart is the culprit. Adding a string replacement in before the email is sent allows a successful send. What I don't understand is WHY these stream of characters are causing the issue ONLY on the distribution email. If I send the email to myself as well, i.e. "[email protected]; [email protected]", then I get the email fine. Re-ordering the list doesn't make a difference the group never gets the email. Because the individual gets the email and not the group I'm assuming the fault is with exchange and some rogue filtering - I've gone through it with the sysadmins and there's no filtering of any sort on that group... so maybe it's a bug? I can't find anyone else having recorded this specific fault so I figured I'd open it here. For now I'm just not using the distribution list but it'd be nice to eventually find the solution. • Javascript Back Button - Stop the initial load of back button from working

  Hi, I'm using a javascript back button link and forward button link to control the user's history inside a modal/lightbox window. The challenge I have is when the modal window is launched, and the "back" and "forward" buttons are present for the user to click, if the initial javascript back button is clicked when the window opens, it actually closes the modal window, because the javascript history is taking the user back to the page PRIOR to the opening of modal window. So, in essence, I'm trying to disable the "back" button from working on the initial load of the modal/light box. <a href="javascript:history.go(-1)">Back Button</a> <a href="javascript:history.go(1)">Foward Button</a> Is this possible?

• How to bind a List of a DataObject to a Grid with BindingSources?

  In an assembly I created a class like the following: [DataObject(true)] public class A { public int Foo{get;set;} [DataObjectMethod[DataObjectMethodType.Select)] public static List<A> GetAllA(string ConnectionString) { // return filled List<A> } } Now I want to display this List with a Gridcontrol under Winforms. I though of a DataGrid. Though I'm coming from ASP.net I'd first think of this.dataGridView1.DataSource = A.GetAllA(ConnectionString) Works, but I'd prefer a better databinding with BindingSources. (Because I've always heard that thats the way to go) I managed to drop a BindingSource onto the form and set the DataSource property to class A. But where can I set the SelectMethod and its parameters? If I set DataSource property of the dataGridView to the BindingSource, it will only display an empty line. Is this the right way to go? Will it only require some additional clicks in the wizard, or do I need to read tons of documentation to get this working?

  I would like to use a GroupTemplate to separate a list of items into groups. However, I need each Group to be numbered sequentially so I can link to them and implement some JS paging. • Create new field in a table that already exists - flex/air sqlite?

  I've got a flex/air app I've been working on, it uses a local sqlite database that is created on the initial application start. I've added some features to the application and in the process I had to add a new field to one of the database tables. My questions is how to I go about getting the application to create one new field that is located in a table that already exists? this is a the line that creates the table stmt.text = "CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS tbl_status ("+"status_id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT,"+" status_status TEXT)"; And now I'd like to add a status_default field. thanks! • Bash: how to interrupt this script when there's a CTRL-C?

  I wrote a tiny Bash script to find all the Mercurial changesets (starting from the tip) that contains the string passed in argument: #!/bin/bash CNT=$(hg tip | awk '{ print $2 }' | head -c 3) while [ $CNT -gt 0 ] do echo rev $CNT hg log -v -r$CNT | grep $1 let CNT=CNT-1 done If I interrupt it by hitting ctrl-c, more often than not the command currently executed is "hg log" and it's that command that gets interrupted, but then my script continues. I was then thinking of checking the return status of "hg log", but because I'm piping it into grep I'm not too sure as to how to go about it... How should I go about exiting this script when it is interrupted? (btw I don't know if that script is good at all for what I want to do but it does the job and anyway I'm interested in the "interrupted" issue)

• MVVM - RaisePropertyChanged turning code into a mess

  New to MVVM so please excuse my ignorance. I THINK i'm using it right but I find my ViewModel has too many of these: RaisePropertyChanged("SomeProperty") Every time I set a property I have to raise that damned property changed. I miss the days where I could just go: public int SomeInteger { get; private set;} These days I have to stick the "RaisePropertyChanged" in everywhere or my UI does not reflect the changes :( Am I doing it wrong or are other people getting annoyed with the excessive number of magic strings and old school property setters? Should I be using dependency properties instead? (I doubt that would help the code bloat anyway) Despite these problems I still think MVVM is the way to go so I guess that's something.

• Connecting to MySQL Server from PHP Command Line (MAMP)

  First of all, I'm using Mac OSX 1.6, MAMP 1.9, PHP 5.3.4, and MySQL 5.1.44. I'm in the process of setting up a video encoding service for a site using Chris Boulton's PHP-Resque and Redis. Once the worker process is fired and the videos have been encoded, I need to save their locations to a mysql database. The php script is being run from the shell, so that is where the issue begins. I even ran a search on my machine for "3306" to find where it's being set, but because that's the normal default, I'm guessing it's not being set explicitly. Any clues on how to fix this rather challenging error?

  Hello, I'm currently trying to create a report using Crystal Reports that comes with Visual Studio 2008. I would like to include a field of type boolean on my report that shows a string rather than true or false. The string should contain either contain a € or a % sign. How would I go about doing this in the Formula Workshop? I've tried things like e.g. if {tblAankoopDetails.SoortKorting} = true then "€" else "%" However this never seems to work and results in warnings such as "The formula result must be a number". This should be fairly simple but this is my first go at using Crystal Reports. Help would be much appreciated. Jay

Now I have been given the task to re-write an existing ERP application in C# (Winforms). I have been reading about Domain Driven Design, scrum, extreme programming, layered architecture etc. Its quite confusing and really hard (because of time limitations) to go and try each and every method and then deciding which way to go. Its very hard for me to understand the bigger picture and see which pattern and agile methodology to follow. To be more specific about what I want to know is that: Is it possible to follow Domain Driven Design and still be agile. Should I choose Extreme programming or scrum in this specific scenario Where does MVP and MVVM fits, which one would be a better option for me

• Spry Collapsible Panel within Collapsible Panel, inconsistent errors.

  Hello everyone it is me again with another question. The booking system located here http://www.divethegap.com/scuba-diving-programmes-dive-the-gap/divemaster-training.php?cat=16 There are 3 main collapsible panels controlled by the spry framework. There are then over a dozen more inside the first collapsible panel as you can see on that page. When you open one of those by pressing one of the 'learn more' buttons you will see that the main collapsible panel that it is in also expands to fit that content and the contracts if you close the smaller panel again. However as soon as you go to the next main collapsible panel 'summery and quote' and then go back to the first main panel by pressing the button that says 'back' there are problems. Now if you open up one of the smaller panels inside the first main panel you will see that the main panel does not expand to fit the contents and in fact the content of the smaller panels spreads over the other content, floating above it.   Hi everyone! I am stuck! Can`t get Nutch to crawl for me by small patches. I start it by bin/nutch crawl command with parameters -depth 7 and -topN 10000. And it never ends. Ends only when my HDD is empty. What i need to do: Start to crawl my seeds with possibility to go further on outlinks. Crawl 20000 pages, then index them. Crawl another 20000 pages, index them and merge with first index. Loop step 3 n times. Tried also with scripts found in wiki, but all scripts i found don't go further. If i run them again, they do everything from beginning. And in the end of script i have the same index i had, when started to crawl. But, i need to continue my crawl. Some help would be very usefull!

  Please help, I used to be running xampp and it was working perfectly. Then I wanted to try something out and I ran IIS instead of xampp. Now I want to go back to using xampp, but whenever I try to run the apache server it says: Busy... Apache started [port 80] If I go to http://localhost/ then it just says that it can't establish a connection to the server. I have turned off IIS, so I don't see why it shouldn't work. Any suggestions?

• Find and replace string in MySQL using data from another table

  Hi, sorry for formatting this wonky but hope you can understand it. I have two MySql tables, and I want to find and replace text strings in one using data in another. Texts - one column: messages 'thx guys' 'i think u r great' 'thx again' ' u rock' Dictionary - two columns: bad_spelling, good_spelling 'thx' 'thanks' ' u ' ' you ' ' r ' ' are ' I want SQL to go through and look at every row in messages and replace every instance of bad_spelling with good_spelling, and to do this for all the pairs of bad_spelling and good_spelling The closest I have gotten is this: update texts, dictionary set texts.message = replace(texts.message, dictionary.bad_spelling, dictionary.good_spelling) But this only changes 'thx' to 'thanks' (in 2 rows) and does not go on to replace ' u ' with ' you' or ' r ' with ' are '. Any ideas how to make it use all the rows in dictionary in the replace statement? -- PS forgot to mention that this is a small example and in the real thing I will have a lot of find/replace pairs, which may get added to over time.

• How do I design the file storage issue?

  I am working on an application that creates video files and stores them in a folder in the C:\ drive. I speculate that there will be a large number of these files in the future and we would run out of disk space at some point of time (on our VPS). When the time comes that we have to upgrade, we either plan to use one of the Cloud providers to store files or our existing provider can add another disk (say D:\ drive). Either way, I would want to design the app now in a way that in future, moving to different locations would not be an issue and would be transparent to the end user. The code that creates these files supports 2 ways: myObj.SetOutputToDisk(<path to store>); or myObj.SetOutputToMemoryStream(ms); If we go with the Cloud architecture, I assume we might have the following combination: Cloud Files + Existing VPS or Cloud Files + Cloud Windows Server Given the unknowns at this time, how would I go about designing this?

  class << self attr_accessor :n, :totalX, :totalY end The syntax above is used for defining class instance variables. But when I think about what syntax implies, it doesn't make any sense to me, so I'm wondering if this type of syntax is used for any other types of definitions. My point of confusion here is this: class << self The append operator normally means "add what's on the right to the object on the left". But in the context of this block, how does that add up to "put the contents of this block into the definition of the class instance rather than the instance"? For the same reason I'm confused as to why in one context class << self can define class instance variables while in another it seems to create class variables such as here: class Point # Instance methods go here class << self # Class methods go here end end
