• Using TDD: "top down" vs. "bottom up"

  Since I'm a TDD newbie, I'm currently developing a tiny C# console application in order to practice (because practice makes perfect, right?). I started by making a simple sketchup of how the application could be organized (class-wise) and started developing all domain classes that I could identify, one by one (test first, of course). In the end, the classes have to be integrated together in order to make the application runnable, i.e. placing necessary code in the Main method which calls the necessary logic. However, I don't see how I can do this last integration step in a "test first" manner. I suppose I wouldn't be having these issues had I used a "top down" approach. The question is: how would I do that? Should I have started by testing the Main() method? If anyone could give me some pointers, it will be much appreciated.

• What are the best practices for importing large datasets into MongoDB?

  We are just giving MongoDB a test run and have set up a Rails 3 app with Mongoid. What are the best practices for inserting large datasets into MongoDB? To flesh out a scenario: Say, I have a book model and want to import several million records from a CSV file. I suppose this needs to be done in the console, so this may possibly not be a Ruby-specific question. Edited to add: I assume it makes a huge difference whether the imported data includes associations or is supposed to go into one model only. Any comments on either scenario welcome.

• Application crashes when popViewControllerAnimated is called while scrolling

  In one screen I have a custom toolbar with a "close" button in it, and a UIScrollView. In the screen that preceded this one I had pushed the current screen into the navigation stack. I had also disabled the navigation toolbar for a larger display area and so the close button would instead be used to call: - (void)doClose { [self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES]; } Now here's the problem: the application crashes when the close button is pressed, while the UIScrollView is moving. Here's the debugger stack trace: 0 __forwarding__ 1 __forwarding_prep_0___ 2 -[UIToolbarButton setHighlighted:] 3 -[UIControl(Static) _unhighlight] 4 __NSFireDelayedPerform ... and I do have the following line in the debugger console: *** -[CALayer setOpacity:]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x718d250 (sometimes setOpacity would be setNeedsDisplay or something related) There won't be any crashes while the scrollview is at rest. What is happening?

• Objective C: App freezes when using a timer

  It took me hours to figure out how to implement a timer into my program, but when it runs, the app doesn't load completely as it did before the timer. It will if I comment out the code I added to int main though

• Mongoose Not Creating Indexes

  I have been trying all afternoon to get my node.js application to create MongoDB indexes properly. I am using the Mongoose ODM and in my schema definition below I have the username field set to a unique index. The collection and document all get created properly, it's just the indexes that aren't working. All the documentation says that the ensureIndex command should be run at startup to create any indexes, but none are being made. I'm using MongoLab for hosting if that matters. I have also repeatedly dropped the collection. • C# Dataset usage necessary before passing to GridView datasource?

  Scenario Lets say for example I have a series of events that fire continually every half second presenting me with an object containing some bits of information. There are always between 10 and 15 objects that are being updated constantly. Since these bits of information are changing continually I want to display them in a GridView. When I do so, I want the user to see the data displayed in the gridview and actually be updated as opposed to just a continually extending list being printed and incrementing (like writeline on the console). Question Is the best way to achieve this to map my objects to a dataset and have the dataset mapped to the gridview? Thoughts Will this allow the gridview to just be "UPDATED" as opposed to being added to? Any implementation suggestions would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: it MUST be windows forms (I use DevExpress too)

• how can I have a teammate restart heroku server from his machine

  I have a rails app up on heroku. Sometimes the server bombs out and I have to go to the console and execute heroku restart so that servers get restarted. This seems to fix the problem. However, I am not on my machine all the time. I would like to have a team member have this capability as well. For this to happen...what does he need to do? Does he need to first have access to the github repository so that he can push and pull code to the repository and then install heroku on his machine? Can this be done without git hub? can he just install heroku?

• Maintain a variable value between program runs

  I have a simple c# console application that is scheduled after every 5 mins. Every invocation of the program requires the output of the last run. What I am doing right now is using a text file and store the result in it. next time when it runs it opens the text file and know the output of the previous run. Is there any other way to do it that wont require any such text file ? Like maintaining a session variable etc ?

• Leaving SQL Management open on the internet

  I am a developer, but every so often need access to our production database -- yeah, poor practice, but anyway... My boss doesn't want me directly on the box using RDP, and so we decided to just permit MS SQL Management Console access so that I can do my tasks. So right now we have the SQL box somewhat accessible on the internet (on port 1433 if I am not mistaken), which opens a security hole. But I am wondering, how much of an uncommon practice is this, and what defaults should I be concerned about? We use MSSQL2008 and I created an account that has Read-Only access, because my production tasks only need that. I didn't see any unusual default accounts with default passwords on the system, so I would be interested to hear your take. (And of-course, is there a better way?)

• Implementing a client for ActiveMQ events

  I can listen to events from a certain topic in an ActiveMQ server using a simple asynchronous listener and print the incoming events to the console (code to that actually comes as an example in the activemq-cpp library). I would like to create clients on other machines that will listen to these events and update their displays. My question is: how to best go about doing this? Are there any Ajax examples you can point me that implement similar functionality? Or is there another technology (comet?) that is better to use for this scenario? How can I display the events in teh browser window as they are received by the client, should I use JQuery?

• Flexible string handling in Visual Studio 2008 C++

  I'm slowly starting to get the hang of the _T stuff in Visual Studio 2008 c++, but a few things still elude me. I can see the benefit of the flexibility, but if I can't get the basics soon, I think I'll go back to the standard way of doing this - much less confusing. The idea with the code below is that it scans the parameters for -d and then stores the text that follows that in the string variable fileDir. It also ignores any other parameters.   Is it possible, to control the mouse pointer from the R console? I have something like this in mind: move_mouse(x_pos=100,y_pos=200) # move the mouse pointer to position (100,200) mouse_left_button_down # simulate a press of the left button move_mouse(x_pos=120,y_pos=250) # move mouse to select something mose_release_left_button # release the pressed button In MATLAB, something like this is possible with the following code import java.awt.Robot; mouse = Robot; mouse.mouseMove(0, 0); mouse.mouseMove(100, 200); Is something similar possible for the keybord?   I have a has_many and belongs_to association. class Link < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :categories belongs_to :property end class Property < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :links end In the index and show I have <%= link.property.name %> and it will show the Property that I assigned to the link with the console just fine. I have a problem with figuring out how to show check boxes in the _form that assign a property to the link (a drop down would work as well). It seems everyone who has had this question before has ether a has_many :through or a HABTM relationship and I can't seem to adapt their answers.

• Javascript function returning number with two decimals...?

  I have a function to return points along a line and my return comes back with two decimal points...? For example, a return of my variable px will be something like -88.4029.032940598. vx is the x vector and mult is the distance of the line plus distance to calculate the point. Here is the operation that is returning these values: var mult = parseFloat(mag + theUnit); var px = coord_one.x_point + (vx * mult); console.log(px); Never have seen this before- I appreciate any and all help!

• WebClient - The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden.

  Opening a public page from browser works fine. Downloading same page using WebClient throws - (403) Forbidden. What is going on here ?   I got three UTF-8 stings: hello, world hello, ?? hello, ?rld I only want the first 10 chars so that the bracket in one column: [hello, wor] [hello, ? ] [hello, ?r] In console: width('??')==width('worl') width('? • Pushing UIViewController onto a UINavigationController

  The other day I asked about using a UINavigationController as a child of a UIViewController. I got that working via the answer. Now what I'm trying to do is push a controller onto the nav stack. • How to find which method makes my iPhone app slow ?

  Currently I am working on a production app. One function acts like the settings.app on iPhone. When the user click a cell of a tableView, as shown below http://www.penguintech.net/images/stackoverflow/1.png It will push another view, which includes a textfield to let user input something. However, on both simulator and device, after the app just loaded, the delay between clicking and showing the second view takes around 2 seconds. Then if user get back to previous view and click again, it will be no delay at all. To detect which method makes the delay, I put a NSLog() in every involved methods, but when I was inspecting the console while running the app, all NSLog() message showed in 0.1 seconds, and then still a delay on the app. Is there any other way to trace the performance footage of a app? The Instruments shows only CPU usage in Mac OS not in iPhone.

  Hi all, I have been working on a shopping cart that the user can add/remove order items as they please and am returning an updated sub-total via a webservice using jQuery $.ajax Here is how I am calling the webservice and setting the sub-total with the response. //perform the ajax call $.ajax({ url: p, data: '{' + s + '}', success: function(sTotal) { //order was updated: set span to new sub-total $("#cartRow" + orderID).find(".subTotal").text(sTotal); }, failure: function() { //if the orer was not saved //console.log('Error: Order not deleted'); } }); The response I am getting seems perfectly fine: {"d":"128.00"} When I display the total on the page it displays as 128 rather than 128.00 I am fully sure it is something very simple and silly but I am so deep into it now I need someone with a fresh brain to help me out!! • Why in the hell is this happening?

  I just can't understand why is my database (mysql) behaving like this! My console shows that the record is created properly (please, notice the "remote_id" value): Tweet Create (0.3ms) INSERT INTO `tweets` (`remote_id`, `text`, `user_id`, `twitter_account_id`) VALUES (12325438258, 'jamaica', 1, 1) But when I check the record, it shows that the remote_id is 2147483647 intead of the provided value (12325438258 in the example above)... This table has many entries, but this field is always written with 2147483647... It was supposed to fill this space with an unique id (which I guarantee you is being generated properly).

• errorPage directive works, but error-page in web.xml doesn't?

  I get jsp exceptions causing a forward to my error page when I put this at the top of my JSPs... <%@ page errorPage="/error.page" %> but when I try to do it globally with web.xml like so: <error-page> <exception-type>java.lang.Throwable</exception-type> <location>/error.page</location> </error-page> I just get a blank page... I've also tried putting /error.jsp in the location element.. but no love with that either.. I am triggering an exception with a jsp that just contains this: <%if(true)throw new RuntimeException("test exception");%> I do see the exception in the console from tomcat but I just can't get that error page to show without a directive on every jsp... am I missing something simple here?
