• Microsoft Dev Days &ndash; Johannesburg 2010

  So I am half way through dev days in Johannesburg. It has been quite an interesting day… Maybe it is me, but this year it hasn’t been as OMG as at previous conferences. A few things that stood out though… 1) This is the first time I have had to queue in a line to use the gents toilets before – yes, a true sign that we are at a typically male dominated industry event in this country – the men’s toilets were jam packed – the ladies if there were any there didn’t have a problem. 2) Bart De Smet presentation still rocks – I am a fan of Bart’s and once again his presentation was great. Something that I am going to look into in more depth which I think is a new feature in .Net is called Code Contracts. 3) I have got to get into Silverlight more… I have known this for a long time and have dabbled in it for a while, but Silverlight in my opinion will become the main platform for “hosting” applications. So… 3 things so far, hopefully I get some OMG’s from the rest of the day…

• Suggestions for Troubleshooting WIndows 7 lockups

  I've got a Dell Latitude E6500 that was working fine under Vista x64. I got one of the new Seagate 500GB Hybrid SSD/HD 2.5 drives and thought.. hmm.. let's try Win 7 x64 on it. Bottom line: It works great for hours and then it will hard lock. I don't mean BSOD (or whatever the Win7 equivalent is). I mean my screen is displaying a static image (if there is a clock displayed, it will be frozen at the time the lockup occurred) and the mouse and keyboard do not work. Control-Alt-Delete will not work. I have to hold down the power button to reboot. The event log records NOTHING at the time the lockup occurs. Obviously something is happening to the system to cause the lockup, but the default Windows 7 x64 doesn't log it. How can I log the things Windows doesn't normally log in Event Viewer ?

• Problem installing Windows Server 2008 R2 on Xen 3.0

  Hi there folks, I've been googling this for a few hours now and not really getting anywhere. We have a Xen 3.0 host which I'm trying to install a copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition onto as a guest OS - but the install hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen when it starts running the installer. Is this is a known issue with the version of Xen we're running (I know it's positively ancient)? Is there a workaround for it at all? We've successfully got a great number of vanilla 2008 servers running on it, it appears it's an issue specific to R2. Bryan

• Office design and layout for agile development

  (moved from stackoverflow) I have found lot of discussions here on about which keyboard, desk, light or colored background is best - but I can't find one addressing the layout of the whole office. We are a company with about 20 employees moving to a new place, something larger. There are two main development practices going on here with regular combination, the back end people often needing to work with the mobile people to arrange web services. There are about twice as many back end people as mobile people. About half of the back end developers are working on-site at any time and while they are almost never all in the office at once at least 5-10 spaces need to be provided - so most of the time the two groups are about equal. We have the chance to arrange desks, partitions and possibly even walls to make the space good. There won't be cash for dot-com frills like catering or massages but now's the time to be planning to avoid ending up with a bunch of desks in a long line. Joel on Software's Bionic Office is an article I've remembered from way back and it has some good ideas but I* (and more importantly the company's owners) are not completely sold on the privacy idea in an environment where we are supposed to be collaborating. This is another great link - The Ultimate Software Development Office Layout - I hadn't even remembered enclosed meeting rooms until reading this. Does the private office stand in the way of agile development? Is the scrum enough forced contact and if you need to bug someone you should need to get up and knock on their door? What design layouts can you point to and why would you recommend them? *I'm not against closed offices at all but would be happy if some other solution can do just as well. If it can't... well, that's what this question is all about.

• Open World Day 2

  A Day in the Life of an Oracle OpenWorld Attendee Part III My second full day started with me waking up and realising that I was supposed to meet my friend Tejas Joshi (co-author of the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Handbook) at the station in 20 minutes!  Needless to say I didn’t make it, but then I felt better later when I found out he had caught the wrong shuttle bus and ended up at the airport instead of the BART! The morning was spent in the Authors Seminar arranged to give authors a whirlwind tour of Oracle Product updates and strategy plans.  It was useful to see what was happening in areas I knew little or nothing about.  In the afternoon I wandered around Java One, a very different show to OpenWorld with much more bleeding edge stuff and just plain blue sky thinking.  Of course who couldn’t love a show with a full size Duke wondering around and available for photographs. Attended a presentation on a highly available Weblogic JMS environment wich did a great job of laying out to architect a highly available solution. Dinner with customers and then collapsed exhausted into bed!

• A list of 'best practices' for extending the life between charges of a notebook battery.

  Hello Everyone, I'd like to compile a list of best practices for getting the most out of a single charge of a typical notebook battery (be it Li-Ion or Li-Poly). Sources would be great as well. I've heard, for instance, that the best things to do to improve battery performance (not the total lifetime of the battery, just single charge performance) are, in descending order of effectiveness: Turn your display all the way down. Turn off WiFi Turn off Bluetooth Spin down disks when they're not in use. etc… I'd like to get sources together for these and other tips for extending life-between-charge for any battery on any notebook (as these really are all about Demand Management rather than Life lime extension.   Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite places and tricks for finding new video games to play. It turns out the least of your problems was finding new games! From the comments it became apparent How-To Geek readers had absolutely no problem finding new games to add to their gaming stable. Buzz writes: I have quite an elaborate procedure in finding my next game:For free games i simply follow the feeds on a few websites like Freegamer, LinuxGames, HappyPenguin and Penguspy. Every now and them i browse Wikipedia articles on free/FOSS games. For commercial games the procedure depends on what i enjoyed the most in that game:- If i enjoyed the story or the general feel: i usually start with a game i like and look for sequels, prequels, mods or spinoffs. I even go out on a limb and give other platforms (than a PC) a try, even if it usually means emulation. • Bright Minds in Singapore: Oracle Graduate Hiring

   Last week I was in Singapore and had the opportunity to take part in our graduate interviewing that we are currently undertaking as part of our ASEAN hiring. I always feel fortunate to get the chance to meet and talk with students in the APAC region and taking time to meet some of the students we interviewed in Singapore last week is no exception. The excitement and enthusiasm of many of the students that I spoke to last week really stands out but what really brought some of them to the forefront for me was their creative ways of thinking and the level of professionalism that I saw in the students. Some of the presentation and communication skills that I saw displayed would rival experienced IT Consultants in the industry.  We still have more interviews to follow up from last week, but I am confident that of the students we had the chance to meet last week some of them will go on to have bright and successful careers here at Oracle.  To all the students that came in and spent the day with us, I want to thank you for giving us your time and for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us. From a business perspective I think you all will go on and do great things and from a personal stand point I enjoyed many of the conversations I had and feel lucky to meet with you. Best of luck with the remainder of your interviews and I hope to see some of you in the halls on my next visit to Singapore.

• If ssh connection fails using SOCKS then what? Automate switch to no proxy?

  Right now I am using plink in a batch routine that reconnects to my SSH server if I loose connection. I use my plink connection & socks proxy (firefox) to forward all my browser traffic. Works great EXCEPT for one thing! If I can't get to my ssh server for some ODD reason I have to go to options in firefox and revert back my settings to NO Proxy. It can be done, but its annoying! So how would I keep my SOCKS Proxy connection in firefox, but if I cant connect to my SSH Server, how can I automatically switch to the autodetect proxy/no proxy settings in firefox? I would think that I could use the Firefox command line arguments and a batch routine to do so, but I do not believe this is possible. I do see via this link where the proxy settings are stored, but does that mean I have to change the proxy settings depending on my senario above within the .js file? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/843340/firefox-proxy-settings-via-command-line

• What kind of website or coding is suitable and safe for an artist's website

  I have a web design project that is related to a singer, and I used Joomla for my previous project and designed good music websites. But for this project I cannot find a suitable template to edit and use. As the website is so simple and does not have any special functionality, I'm thinking about creating a website with just simple CSS, html and jQuery. I'm Good at them and can make a perfect look but I am not sure about the security. In Joomla I use different security plugins but do not know about a client-side scripting. So generally I need your ideas, about the following questions: - Is Joomla and generally CMS a good option for a music website? - How famous artists' website is base on? CMS or Client-side scripting? - Do you recommend to create it manually without using and CMS or template? - An do you suggest WordPress for this type of websites? (The website will have these pages: Biography, News, Music (with a music player), Photos, videos and contacts). That's it! Thank you for all your responds, I had a look at Joomla and the only template I chose is This One which seems very simple, and I am worry about module position, because it seems does not have any module position at all. I tried to contact the provider but did not get any respond. Does anyone know about its module position, I mean is there any way to find them? An is it possible to create a 2-3 module positions? Also I had a look at ThemeForest's WordPress templates and it has such a great template. I think WordPress is more active in creating artistic templates. But is it secure and professional to use this CMS for a singer who is kinda famous it his country? I am talking about a template like this. Share your opinions guys.

• Almost time to hit the road again

  I’ve had a few months of not much traveling, but now that the weather is improving… conference season is starting up again. That means it’s time for me to start hitting the road. In June, I have Tech Ed 2010 in New Orleans, LA. I lived in New Orleans for several years, both as military and civilian and I have a few friends still down there. I haven’t been there since before Hurricane Katrina, so I have mixed feelings about returning… but I am still looking forward to it. Also in June, I have Codestock in Knoxville, TN. Codestock is one of my favorite events, primarily because of the excellent people that speak there and also attend sessions. It’s a great mix of people and technologies. Sometime in July or August, I’m headed to Austin, TX for a couple days. I don’t know the exact date yet, but if you have an event down there in that timeframe, let me know and maybe we can sort something out. In September, I’m heading to Seattle for my first PAX (Penny Arcade Expo.)  I’m going strictly as an attendee and it looks like a LOT of fun. Really excited to check it out. Also in September, I’m headed to Omaha for the Heartland Developers Conference. This is a FANTASTIC event, and certainly one of my local favorites. (I guess local is relative, it’s about a 6 hour drive.) In addition to speaking on WP7, I’ll be doing a series of hands on labs on XNA they day before the conference starts, so that should be a lot of fun as well.   In addition to all this stuff, I have my own XNA User Group to take care of. In August, Andy “The Z-Man” Dunn is coming to speak and check out the various food on a stick offerings at the Minnesota State Fair!

• RHN Satellite / Spacewalk custom channels, best practice?

  Hi, I'm currently setting up RHN Satellite, and all works well. I'm in the process of creating custom channels, since we have certain software which should be available for all nodes of satellite, e.g. puppet, facter, subversion, php (newer version than present in base). I've tried to find documentation on best practices on this. How should they be set up, how to handle different arch, how to handle noarch packages. How to sync updates to dependencies when updating a custom package in a custom channel (e.g. php is updated, how to fetch all updated dependencies). The channel management documentation from RHEL (http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Network_Satellite/5.3/Channel_Management_Guide/html/Channel_Management_Guide-Custom_Channel_and_Package_Management.html) doesn't provide me with enough information on how to solve any of theese issues. All tips, tricks and information regarding this would be great!

• Lossless cutting of MPEG TS files in Windows

  I have several HD video files in transport stream (.ts) format, recorded with my satellite receiver. I want to cut them, as in simply remove a few minutes from the beginning, the end and sometimes a few minutes in the middle of it (remove early start of recordings, late ends and, for some seldom files, the ads). What is a good, ideally but not necessarily free, software with a GUI to do this? Best would be something where you could select points on a timeline and simply cut the elements out. As a resulting file, just the same .ts format would be great, but I could also live with putting the video contents into another container, as long as the video is NOT re-encoded / transcoded. The files have additional audio streams and subtitles. These should be retained in the process. My OS is Windows.

• How do you motivate peers to become better developers?

  In my experience there seems to be two kinds of developers (if we simplify matters a great deal of course). On the one hand we have the developers, who may do a perfectly acceptable job, but who do not really care about the computer science part of their craft. They usually know few languages / technologies and are happy to let things stay that way. For whatever reason, they don't try to improve their computer science skills unless this is required in their current position. On the other hand, we have the geeks or the pragmatic programmers if you subscribe to that idea. They play around with other languages and technologies and usually have knowledge about several topics outside the technical domain of their current job. I would like to see more developers, who are enthusiastic about software development. If you share this point of view, what do you do to push your peers in that direction? Edit: follow-up question inspired by one of the answers: As non-managers, should we really care about this? And why/why not?

• Decreasing the Height of the PinkMatter Flamingo Ribbon Bar

  The one and only thing prohibiting wide adoption of PinkMatter's amazing Flamingo ribbon bar integration for NetBeans Platform applications (watch the YouTube movie here and follow the tutorial here) is... the amount of real estate taken up by the height of the taskpane: I was Skyping with Bruce Schubert about this and he suggested that a first step might me to remove the application menu. OK, once that had been done there was still a lot of height: But then I configured a bit further and now have this, which is pretty squishy but at least shows there are possibilities: How to get to the above point? Get the PinkMatter Flamingo ribbon bar from java.net (http://java.net/projects/nbribbonbar), which is now the official place where it is found, and then look in the "Flaming Integration" module. There you'll find com.pinkmatter.modules.flamingo.LayerRibbonComponentProvider. Do the following: Comment out "addAppMenu(ribbon);" in "createRibbon()". That's the end of the application menu. • Anyone been successful changing their career without having to start over from scratch?

  I posted a similar question on careeroverflow, but stackoverflow is just way more active and has way more users, so hopefully someone out there can help answer. I am currently an embedded developer in the defense/aerospace world for a big company. While I like the benefits and the pay, it just isn't keeping me happy. The Paul Graham article: How To Do What You Love really struck home. The problem I face are my golden handcuffs. When I look at jobs out there, they all want 5+ years experience in that language with expertise in framework/tool/server A,B,C, etc... I have worked in C and C++ on the job (in a real-time embedded environment) with some small things in C# and Java. I'm learning Ruby now to expand my knowledge, but I don't consider myself an expert in anything right now. I'd love to work on desktop applications or web apps. Is it possible for someone like me to make the switch without going back to the start line? I'd love to leave the huge bureaucracy and work with some great developers. I'd be willing to work late and take a modest pay cut, but that isn't so clear just from a resume. For those that have altered their career path, how did you do it? For those people who are in charge of hiring, what can I do to help myself?

• How to display/add play button on youtube image ?

  Hi all I am working in one project in wordpress environment and I have the opportunity to work with youtube video, fancybox etc. I have embedded the youtube image from youtube server which is "http://img.youtube.com/vi/0.jpg", now there is no play button shows up on middle of the image as we see usually any youtube videos! I want youtube image will be shown in 180 x 150 size and play button image (play_button.png) will be display in middle of the youtube image in small size. • Help me select a "Simpler" target to create a new language: .NET, LLVM, Go, Own VM

  Lets define "Simple". This is my first language. I have no previous experience I will not dedicate +4 years to learn it properly. I'm a professional software [developer], but as an amateur in this area, I want instant gratification. If the idea shows a future, I could rewrite it. I don't want to do everything from scratch. In fact, if there exists a way to get GO (for example), change its syntax, add some sugar, give some extra functions and leave intact everything else, that would be perfect! From the example of coffescript/scala I think is better to build on top of some rich runtime like .NET/GO so I don't need to rewrite everything. HOWEVER, if is better other way, no problem for the first try! I want it in a week. I need it in a week so it will really take a month. Then it truly takes 3 months. But I don't want to put more that 3 months on this. I could reduce the scope of my language, but I hope the tools will help me a lot... I want to build a new language. Similar to python, but typed. I wonder what to build it on top of. I like the idea of building on top of GO. To get their sane (IMHO) OO paradigm (I plan to do the same, using interfaces, not inheritance), get goroutines and some other stuff. In my naive thinking I imagine that spit another language could help me to debug it more easily. However, look like everyone is building on top of something like .NET (don't like Java), LLVM or make it own VM. I read http://createyourproglang.com/ (great!) and the part of the VM look "easy" to me. So, what I need is the proper criteria and question I need to know in advance to have a fair shot at make this.

• Why is cpu power management not working in Server 2012 with Hyper-V?

  We've been using Server2008R2 with Hyper-V for a couple of years now and chose it at the time because of its ability to make use of Intel SpeedStep and AMD PowerNow! Now with Server 2012 and Hyper-V V3, all power management abilities seem to be gone. The CPUs are always at full speed and our servers need twice the energy as before while idling. (Yes, the CPU P-states are enabled in the BIOS) Is this by design? Is there a workaround to enable cpu power management again? Despite the great new features of Hyper-V 3, this would be a show-stopper for us since we are very concerned about energy consumption.
