• What are best monitoring tool customizable for cluster / distributed system?

  I am working on a system having multiple servers. I am interested in monitoring some server specific data like CPU/memory usage, disk/filesystem usage, network traffic, system load etc. and some other my process specific data. What are available open source that can serve my purpose? If it provides to customize the parameter to be monitored and monitor your own data by creating plugin / agent. Any suggestions? I heard of Nagios, Zabbix and Pandora but not sure if they provide such interface.

• Hyper-V CPU Utilization, Good Tools?

  I just learned a ton from this post: Host CPU% doesn't include child VM CPU%, specifically I learned that both the 'host OS' and 'child VM' are siblings within the HyperVisor layer. Are there good utilities for 'watching' the total CPU and other resource counters at the HyperVisor (hardware) layer? I know perfmon (watching special Hyper-V CPU counters) is the standard answer, but I've stayed away from perfmon for ad-hoc monitoring. Is there a good OSS or free tools to 'watch' the resource utilization as I create multiple new VMs running on the server? I'm a developer, so if there aren't any good UI tools to surface this data I'd consider creating one, but only if needed. P.S. My specific scenario is I'm creating new web, SQL and back-end server VMs for new Windows 8 Server and SQL 2012 (entire application stack). I need to monitor them for utilization and know when I need to grow beyond 1 host (I'll need to split the VMs into separate hosts as I hit hardware limits of the 1st host, and diagnose problems).

• Monit send alert to nagios NSCA

  I want to monitor a web with monit check host function and if the site is down then alert it to nagios nsca so it sends the info to nagios and nagios marks it as status OK or host down for example. The problem is that how can I make the monit alert fuction send the info to nagios nsca. I am not sure that this will work, but what I came up with is: set alert exec 'echo -e "nagios nsca format" | /usr/local/nagios/bin/send_nsca -H serveraddress -c /usr/local/nagios/etc/send_nsca.cfg' Would this work and is it the best solution to work with or can it be done some other way?

  Hi, we have an SBS2003 server. Recently I decided to switch to hmailserver as i feel it's better than exchange 2003, so i disabled it. Of course i don't receive the Monitoring and Reporting emails from my server anymore, there is a way to change the setting? I think it directly interacts with Exchange, but maybe there is an smtp option out there Otherwise there is an alternative? I tried the paessler monitor on a vm, but i feel it's too much for my use: i just need to get a daily report of the security violations in the event log and something else

• Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? • Need help with Drupal bulk mail low open rate for legitimate mailing list

  I've moved from constant contact to Drupal Simplenews/Mimemail/SMTP. Previously the open rate was around 50% for constant contact, but now it's 4-5% for the same list via the mentioned setup. Mail is getting out from the server, but it's having an issue anyway. Here's the setup: -The e-mail list consists of approximately 80,000 addresses which is queued at 10,000 e-mails per cron run (which runs hourly). -The server is a Dual Core2Quad machine with 2GB of RAM. -When mail is being sent, the mail queue will usually go up to ~1000 at the beginning of the hour before reducing to ~250 by the time the next cron occurs. -Newsletter is themed to display custom style for newsletter on send -Newsletter is received by some, but appears to be bounced by many (based on low open rate_ -I've added SPF, domain keys, and a PTR record to the DNS -Server hostname (listed in ptr) is different from hosted domain -Very low spam number via Spamassassin -IP and domain are not blacklisted -Mail goes out via SMTP module on delivery. Any ideas?

  I'm trying to monitor disks on windows 2008 R2 system, but I'm getting wrong values returned from hrStorageSize and hrStorageUsed for one of the 2 disks the system has. Local disk C: is returning correct values, whereas D: disk, which is an SAN disk, is reporting 32G instead of 500G.   Recently i installed GRUB2, everything is working fine. When my system is started my monitor is showing something like the following "Minimal BASH-Like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename." Press "Esc" key to enter the menu. Boot windows... and when i press the Esc key it then shows the GRUB2 menu showing list of operating systems installed on my system How the remove "Minimal BASH-Like line editing ...." text. I only need this line Press "Esc" key to enter the menu. Boot windows... Note: Both my WindowsXP and Fedora12 are working fine and loading with no problem.

• building a new pc - no display, no beeps

  Hi Building a new pc using this motherboard: GA-MA785GMT-UD2H and a 500W power supply (1 x 20 pin & 1 x 4 pin connectors). The CPU fan, hard drive and power supply all spin up but no display on the monitor and no beeps. Have tried: taking out all of the memory and still no beeps used a different power supply and still no display I only have the Motherboard, memory, CPU, heat sink & fan & power supply connected. Any ideas? Do I have a faulty motherboard?

• Display Resolution Getting Changed Automatically (sometimes) - Win7x64 - Asus M3A78-EM

  AMD PC Motherboard - Asus M3A78-EM (installed VGA drivers from Asus website - AMD_VGA_V863200_XPVistaWin7.zip) It has VGA and HDMI inbuilt ports (ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 256MB) VGA is connected to my ViewSonic Monitor. HDMI is connected to LG LCD TV OS - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Sometimes, when I reboot/start my PC, my ViewSonic display resolution changes and does not show the recommended value(1440x900) in Resolution Settings. The HDMI display works well always. But after multiple reboots/starts, the problem gets fixed automatically and I get back my recommended resolution on ViewSonic display. I am not making any changes to the existing drivers. It sometimes work well, and sometimes doesn't work. Can someone assist me resolving this permanently.

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • Terminal Server 2003 Performance Troubleshooting

  Let me get your thoughts on terminal server performance problems. The server hosts average 25 users which, after running some numbers, on average use 600MB memory with their main applications running (web browser, adobe reader, IP phone client). All users are on the same LAN as server. We constantly experience slow response and short session lockups. Combined CPU usage is on average 10%. What appears strange to me is that the system shows 29GB physical memory with 25GB of it free. The page file usage is about 50% averaging 9GB used. Some server specs OS: Server 2003 32bit Enterprise with /PAE flag RAM: 32GB CPU: 2xQuad Core @ 2.27Ghz HD: RAID5 1.2GB After doing basic troubleshooting using performance monitor it leads me to believe that the performance problems are caused by the 32bit OS limitation in addressing full 32GB of physical memory even though the /PAE flag is used. Can anyone suggest something, troubleshooting steps that can lead to a more conclusive answer? Thanks

• How do I lower idle cpu usage in ubuntu linux? Gnome or KDE Variants

  My question comes from a kde desktop currently, but it also happens with the gnome instance. When just sitting there, with only the cpu monitor widget running. no open windows, no background processes other than the desktop, my cpu is at ~20%. I wanna know how to fix this, and possibly get better performance out of it. When running my windows side, the cpu will sit at zero, and i generally load new programs about 400ms faster. With windows 7 being as slow as it is, this is not acceptable. and the widget is only set to check every 500ms, so im almost completely sure its not the widget. My system is a Gateway nv 53 amd 2.0 ghz turion with 4 gb of installed ram, and 500 gb hd. both linux and windows are 64 bit. average ram use on either system is about 1.4 gb for just the os

  Is there a way to tell xrandr "this space intentionally left blank"? I have a laptop that drives its internal display at 1920x1080, but the external monitor I'm using, due to its different aspect ratio, doesn't have that mode. It runs at 1920x1200. (Update 2: changed it to an answer, per suggestion -- workaround doesn't answer the underlying question of leaving space blank.)

• Frame rate upsampling codec/player/software?

  Hello, I recently noticed that when I play both HD and SD videos on my HDMI TV at 1080p 60Hz from my computer, the motion is not fluid as I would expect. As far as I know, it could be because the 24fps video needs to be upsampled by the codec to match the 60Hz output of the monitor. But, as far as I know, the upsampling is done by simply repeating each photogram for a certain amount of frames. I usually play MKV videos with VLC. Do you know if there is a player or codec that performs the upsampling by interpolation like some 100Hz TVs do? I recently saw an LG led TV play a 24fps 720p video at 100Hz with an incredible motion fluidity, and I simply wonder why can't my computer do! I have an NVidia card. Does PureVideo help? I'm a noob with these things. Thank you.

  Hello, I have a Windows Server 2008 machine with IIS installed which is hosting a webapp that is sending some notification mails once-in-a-while. What I'd like to do is to monitor the email sent by the application. For this I need a dummy SMTP server which intercepts messages but won't send them further but save them locally on the hard disk.I've already found some of them like Papercut, SMTP4Dev. The problem with these that I have to be logged on the server all the time which is not suitable because the server has only 2+1 TS connections. • How to locally resume a session that has been started remotely using xrdp?

  Can I connect to a RD session that has been started (and abandoned) from a remote machine using xrdp? Also I'd like to be able to do the exact opposite: to remotely login to a session that has been initiated locally. I'm trying to get as close as possible to how Windows RS behaves. (Which also includes that the session would use my terminal machine/monitor resolution. I wasn't able to achieve that using VNC.) Suggestions to a better alternative to xrdp are welcome please. I was wondering if there can be any improvement in above code. Because in the statistics that program prints says: Parallel GC work balance: 1.01 (16940708 / 16772868, ideal 2) and SPARKS: 2 (1 converted, 0 overflowed, 0 dud, 0 GC'd, 1 fizzled) What are these converted , overflowed , dud, GC'd, fizzled and how can help to improve the time.

• Finding Locked Out Users

  Active Directory up to 2008 network (our servers are a mix of 2008, 2003...) I'm looking for a quick way to query AD to find out what users are locked out, preferably from a batch or script file, to monitor for possible issues with either user accounts being attacked by an automated attack or just anomalies in the network. I've Googled and my Google-fu has failed; I found a query off Microsoft's own knowledgebase that cites a string to use on Server 2003 with the management snap-in's saved queries (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555131) but when I entered it, the query returned 400 users that a spot-check showed did NOT have a checkmark in the "Account is locked out" box under "account." In fact, I don't see anything wrong with their accounts. Is there a simple utility (wisesoft bulkadusers apparently uses this method behind the scenes, since it's results were also wrong) that will give a count of users and possibly their user object names? Script? Something?

• MS-DOS application sending screen output to LPT printer

  We have a MS-DOS application(coded in FoxPro), and recently had this glitch: the screen menu of the application without reason starts printing in an LPT Panasonic KX-1150 printer. It's a never ending print of all the screens of the application, as if the main output instead of sending it to the monitor, sends it to the printer! It creates a unnamed document with N/D pages and keeps printing forever. We have to turn the printer off and then kill the document in the spool to stop it... The printer is installed with a Generic/Text driver, and has happened to us both in WindowsXP and Win7. What can this be? Thanks in advance

  I have a not-so-small number of computers (say, 5) which I want to access with a single keyboard, USB and monitor. I can get an 8-port KVM switch, which is a pretty expensive piece of hardware; however, in theory, I should be able to cascade KVM switches: Have one 4-port KVM switch between 2 other KVMs (a 2-port and a 4-port). Is this doable (with typical off-the-shelf switches and cables)? Has anyone had experience doing this? Note: I'm interested in USB-only for the keyboard and mouse, and either VGA or DVI for the display. Audio and PS/2 connections are irrelevant for me..

• Are there any tools for monitoring individual Apache virtual hosts in real-time?

  I'm looking for a way to monitor and record Apache traffic, separated by virtual host. I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly. Does anyone know of a reliable way to determine real-time traffic per vhost? If I can find this it should be easy enough to write a new Munin plugin.

• Hide Win 8.1 "tip" about "Switch between apps"?

  I've just installed Win8.1 and I'm trying to set up IIS. When I open Add remove programs from the start menu I get the pc-settings app. In the pc-settings app I get a "tooltip" or whatever we should call it, that hints me to "Switch between apps" by swiping from the edge. Well fine, but I don't want to do that right now, and I can't get that tip to dissapear. The tip lingers on even into Visual Studio, covering my code. I can't swipe because I don't have a touch screen, and also I'm on a multimonitor system that shows this tip in the middle of the screen. Here's a screenshot for you, where I put the web browser slightly over the left monitor. So, besides rebooting, how am I supposed to kill this very informative tip? EDIT When I kill the app by alt-f4 it dissapears right until I open the settings app again, then it's back. What I'm asking about is how to dismiss items like this in general.
