• How to have internet connection over VPN while "Microsoft Firewall Client for ISA server" is running

  I have the software mentioned in the title running on my machine. When I connect over VPN to my company's network, my internet connection gets borked, because somehow the ISA firewall blocks it. This is completely idiotic, because my work involves extensive use of the internet, so having to disconnect and reconnect continuously seriously cripples my productivity. (Meaning: I'm tearing my hair out here.) Can I have my VPN connection and somehow still have my internet connection too? I'm open to any solution.

• Unexpected server restart - Windows 2003 SP2 fully patched

  I'm having problems with a server that has been restarting itself randomly for the past 3 months. The server is windows 2003 with SP2 Domain Controller and it is fully patched. I have seen the following errors in event log: Source: USER32 Category: None Type: Information Event ID: 1074 User: Domain\Administrator The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of computer (server name) on behalf of user domainname\Administrator for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found Reason Code: 0x840000ff Shutdown Type: restart I have ran out of ideas as to what might be causing this issue. The system is clean and not infected. There are no scheduled tasks responsible for the restart either. I'm considering moving the backup (Backup Exec 12.5) to a different server but I'm almost certain that this is not the issue as the restart times vary and do not match the scheduled backup jobs. Any suggestions to help me resolve this issue would be appreciated, thanks.

  My parents' pc has windows 7's boot manager installed at MBR and grub2 is installed on /dev/sda2 (booting linux on /dev/sda2). I want to make a bootable cd so that when booted from it just chainloads into the boot manager on the second partition. I assume using grub rather than grub2 for this will be simpler, using the configuration timeout=0 hiddenmenu default=0 title grub2 (/dev/sda2) rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader (hd0,1)+1 I know I can make a bootable linux cd in various ways, but that is not what I want. I just want to put grub/grub2 on the cd, no kernels or programs. The question is how do I make the iso file? I have found some references to installing on a floppy or usb disk, but all those assume the device is present when running the grub install commands. A iso file is different.

  When I try to zip files containing unicode characters in their names, such as © or ™, I get the following error: [Window Title] Compressed (zipped) Folders Error [Content] 'C:\Asd™.txt' cannot be compressed because it includes characters that cannot be used in a compressed folder, such as ™. You should rename this file or directory. [OK] This only became a problem when I reinstalled Windows 7. I probably had some resources necessary from this error to be resolved automatically, but it's almost clean installation now and I can't zip files. How do I fix this? UPD: Some time passed since I posted this question, I installed some of my usual applications, but the problem still exists and I'm not sure if it can be fixed by installing some specific application from before.

• How can I get Virtual Server 2005 R2 running on Windows Server 2008 R2?

  For various reasons (old VT-less hardware, and .vhd support) we need to still run Virtual Server 2005 R2. It's just for lab/demo work but we'd like to run the host on the newest Windows OS possible. It's documented and at least partially supported to run the old Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 (non-R2). I've done that before. I'm wondering if anyone has gotten the scenario in the title above to work.   The title of the question might be misleading because I'm not an expert and I'm trying to learn the proper terminology. That being said, I'm wondering if it's possible to setup a wildcard DNS record for any number of dot separation in domain names and have them all point to the network root. This is for WordPress multisite, users will have the option of choosing a mapped domain name, I want to configure my DNS so that both mysite.co.uk.network.com and mysite.com.network.com are valid (I realize this is a but ugly, but WordPress multisite requires that each site have a unique site_url and I'd prefer to preserve the period-delimited appearance if it's possible).

• Getting ERR_DNS_FAIL when loading a local webserver page?

  When I go to a page hosted on a machine on a local network, I get a "The page cannot be found" error with "ERR_DNS_FAIL" in the title. Any ideas what this is or why I am getting it on my computer? I've tried in Firefox, IE and Chrome. Other computers on the network load the page just fine. I'm pretty sure it is from the hostname. I am able to access the page if I browse to it using the IP of the machine. However, it has two hostnames and both are giving the ERR_DNS_FAIL error. I tried restarting the browsers or rebooting the machine, but neither helped. EDIT: ISSUE RESOLVED ON ITS OWN!

• Remote Desktop closes with Fatal Error (Error Code: 5)

  We have one PC (Windows XP SP3) that we can not log onto using a Remote Desktop session. Logging on to the PC directly (sitting in front of it using the connected keyboard and monitor) work fine. From a second PC (tried a number of different ones but all Windows XP SP3) I run 'mstsc' and type in PC name to connect to. This shows the login box which we can enter the correct login details and click OK. Within a few second we get an error: Title: Fatal Error (Error Code:5) Error: Your Remote Desktop session is about to end. This computer might be low on virtual memory. Close your other programs, and then try connecting to the remote computer again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support. None of the computers we are using are low on memory (2Gb+) and we let windows manage the virtual memory side of things. We do not see this with any other PC and do use Remote Desktop in meeting rooms to connect to user PCs with no problems.

  Hey there, I've just moved to a new server and I can't seem to get FrontPage extensions to work with Mircosoft Expressions. I like to edit my site Live rather then local to server. But Now, when I access my domain.. eg: http://domain.com It'll come up with: Access Denied. And if I click details it returns 501 Method Not Implemented Method Not Implemented GET to / not supported. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. If I define (in .htaccess): ErrorDocument 404 /404.php The Details returns the Title and contents of 404.php. And if I define (in .htaccess): ErrorDocument 404 /404.php ErrorDocument 501 /501.php The Details return nothing. What Am I doing wrong? Thanks.

  Title pretty much says it all, but here's what I'm doing... ls -l produces this... drwx------ 1 brian brian 4096 2010-12-28 14:19 foldername -rw------- 1 brian brian 0 2010-12-28 15:54 index.html after typing something like chmod o=rx index.html the output of ls -l is the same. This happens whether or not I'm in the original location or the symlink location. However, as a further twist, the output of chmod -v o=rx index.html is the following: mode of `index.html' changed to 0605 (rw----r-x) The location is also being symlinked to by apache. What's going on with my permissions?

  I am working in google spreadsheets and I am trying to do some counting that takes into consideration cell values across multiple cells in each row. Here's my table: |AUTHOR| |ARTICLE| |VERSION| |PRE-SELECTED| ANDREW GOLF STREAM 1 X ANDREW GOLF STREAM 2 X ANDREW HURRICANES 1 JOHN CAPE COD 1 X JOHN GOLF STREAM 1 (Google doc here) Each person can submit multiple articles as well as multiple versions of the same article. Sometimes different people submit different articles that happen to be identically named (Andrew and John both submitted different articles called "Golf Stream"). Multiple versions written by the same person do not count as unique, but articles with the same title written by different people do count as unique. So, I am looking to find a formula that Counts the number of unique articles that have been submitted [4] (without having to manually create extra columns for doing CONCATS, if possible) It would also be great to find formulas that: Count the number of unique articles that have been pre-selected (marked "X" in "PRE-SELECTED" column) [2] Count the number of unique articles that have only 1 version [4] Count the number of unique articles that have more than 1 of their versions pre-selected 1 Thank you so much! • Outlook receives winmail.txt attachment instead of Excel, PowerPoint or Word attachments from Lotus notes senders

  Ok so the title pretty much says it all. We are offering a Hosted Exchange solution for our customer. Everything is working fine except for one customer complaining that he is receiving winmail.dat or winmail.txt attachments instead of the actual Word Excel or PowerPoint attachments he should be receiving, only when these messages come from a specific European senders, that is using Lotus Notes. I know that usually the problem is coming from Outlook senders to other mail clients, but this is not the first they inform me of this but I can't find anything on the matter so far. Has anyone ever gotten and solved this problem? If not, does anyone have any idea regarding this? I had solved this problem a few months ago, by upgrading Outlook to SP2 and then uninstalling it using the Service Pack removing tool of Microsoft. It seems that only the latest SP1 version could work but not the SP2. The problem is that now nothing is working at all. Thank you for your help, Philippe

  After downloading this file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/315/hon/hon_update.exe before it actually copies to my computer I get this error: File Access Denied <title of box> You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file. Within this box are to buttons: Try Again or Cancel I have searched other similar "permission" type questions, but they seem to all refer to existing files or folders. How do I give permission to a file which doesn't exist yet? (since it is in the process of downloading and hasn't finally copied over yet) I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I would be happy to supply any other information to help clarify.

One thing that I stumbled on just now was exactly what the title says, running: weee@my-server:~$ sudo echo "hello" > some-file.txt weee@my-server:~$ ls -lh total 4.0K -rw-rw-r-- 1 weee weee 6 Dec 5 21:21 some-file.txt The file is owned by me, whereas touch works like one would expect: weee@my-server:~$ sudo touch other-file.txt weee@my-server:~$ ls -lh total 4.0K -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Dec 5 21:22 other-file.txt How can I force the file to be created by root? Do I simply have to create the file in my homedir, then sudo chown root... and sudo mv ... move it to /var where I need it to be? I was hoping there'd be a single step to accomplish this.

  My friend is a Skin specialist (Tricologist) and she has a computer with WinXP in her office. She asked me if I can recommend a hardware which would enable her to write on a graphics tablet that would appear on the screen. Her requirement is thus: There is a prescription paper, a sheet of paper (A4 size) which has a letter head (With the title of the Clinic, Doctor's name etc). The exact image of the paper is available on the Computer. She takes the pictures of the patient's head with a camera and pastes the photo over the sheet of paper. So the top half of the prescription paper will have the photo of the patient's head. In the second half, she wants to write the medication required. I have heard of Bamboo graphics tablet and I saw video in Youtube. But I am not sure if it would be the right solution for her. Can anyone please advise me on this?

  I am trying to revitalize an old Thinkpad R31 that has the Intel 82830 graphics and only 256 MB of RAM. I have tried a Xubuntu 9.10 Live CD. After booting the screen blinks so much that it is practically unreadable. I have searched for updated IBM Thinkpad drivers but I only found drivers for Windows on the Thinkpad support web site. EDIT: I have changed the title and the description. It is not a problem of the drivers. It seems to be a problem with the kernel. See my own answer below.

  I apologize in advance for the confusing title, not sure what the best way to describe this action is. Basically, I am holding down the mouse wheel and then moving the mouse itself up and down to scroll (not actually rotating the mouse wheel forward or backward). This is often the most convenient way to scroll for me. Unfortunately, when I scroll in this way, and then let up the mouse wheel again, it performs a click action, so if the arrow happens to land on a link when I let up the mouse wheel, I end up inadvertently clicking that link. How can I prevent the mouse from performing a click action when I use the mouse wheel to scroll by holding it down and then letting it up when I am done scrolling? • How to disable Chrome themes/skins and get default window decorations

  Is there a way to disable Chrome's custom window skinning such that it lets the OS draw standard window title bars, borders, etc, in the style I have configured the OS to draw such things with? I didn't spend all that time with the control panel setting a window style that pleases me just to have applications decide that they know better than me how I want my windows to look. As a practical matter, having each application decide for itself which color cues to use to show "this is the active window" becomes very confusing. Alternatively, is there a tool somewhere that reads the Windows 7 color and window style settings and produces a Chrome theme that imitates them?
