• Flash browser game - HTTP + PHP vs Socket + Something else

  I am developing a non-real time browser RPG game (think Kingdom of Loathing) which would be played from within a Flash app. At first I just wanted to make the communication with server using simply URLLoader to tell PHP what I am doing, and using $_SESSION to store data needed in-between request. I wonder if it wouldn't be better to base it on a socket connection, an app residing on a server written in Java or Python. The problem is I have never ever written such an app so I have no idea how much I'd have to "shift" my thoughts from simple responding do request (like PHP) to continuously working application. I won't hide I am also concerned about the memory and CPU usage of such Server app, when for example there would be hundreds of users connected. I've done some research. I have tried to do some research, but thanks to my nil knowledge on the sockets subject I haven't found anything helpful. So, considering the fact I don't need real time data exchange, will it be wise to develop the server side part as socket server, not in plain ol' PHP?

• Dynamic control click event not firing properly

  I'm creating a next/previous function for my repeater using pageddatasource. I added the link button control dynamically in my oninit using the following code. LinkButton lnkNext = new LinkButton(); lnkNext.Text = "Next"; lnkNext.Click += new EventHandler(NextPage); if (currentPage != objPagedDataSource.PageCount) { pnlMain.Controls.Add(lnkNext); } So in my initial page_load, the next link comes up fine. There are 5 pages in my objPagedDataSource. currentPage variable is 1. The "NextPage" event handler looks like this public void NextPage(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (HttpContext.Current.Request.Cookies["PageNum"] == null) { HttpCookie cookie = new HttpCookie("PageNum"); cookie.Value = "1"; } else { HttpCookie cookie = HttpContext.Current.Request.Cookies["PageNum"]; cookie.Value = (Convert.ToInt32(cookie.Value) + 1).ToString(); } this.BindRepeater(); } So I am incrementing the cookie I am using to track the page number and then rebinding the repeater. Here is the main issue. The first time I click Next, it works, it goes to Page 2 without any problems. When on Page 2, I click Next, it goes back to Page 1. Seems like the Next event is not wiring up properly. Not sure why, any ideas?

  Hi, I don't understand why I'm not getting the message as "username already exits" if type the username which is already in database. If the username in a server, then it is returning the value as "1" otherwise empty, and despite of successfully getting the value from the server based on username is present or not, and assigning the value to variable "x", I'm unable to get message when I pass already exist username. • Should I still be using jquery .getJson in 1.4.2?

  Hi I was looking at the 14 days of jquery http://jquery14.com/day-01/jquery-14 and I saw this and it got me to wondering is there a point to use getJson anymore? JSON and script types auto-detected by content-type (jQuery.ajax Documentation, Commit 1, Commit 2) If the response to an Ajax request is returned with a JSON mime type (application/json), the dataType defaults to “json” (if no dataType is specified). Additionally, if the response to an Ajax request is returned with a JavaScript mime type (text/javascript or application/x-javascript) , the dataType defaults to “script” (if no dataType is specified), causing the script to automatically execute. First I can see such a huge benefit of this. In jquery 1.3 I came to a situation where in some cases I would return a partial view and some cases I would return a json result (asp.net mvc). It worked in firefox but in no other browser and one of the problems was I basically had to tell jquery to either do json or text/html. With it automatically detecting I could get away with this. Anyways I found a solution around this at that time. So now it just makes me wonder if there is any point to using GetJson. I am also unsure how to set these JavaScript mime types? I am assuming that if you return a JsonResult from asp.net mvc it will set it. but I am not sure if I was just sending a text result if it would be set( I am not sure if ContentResult would set this).

• help('modules') crashing? Not sure how to fix..

  I was trying to install a module for opencv and added an opencv.pth file to the folder beyond my sites.py file. I have since deleted it and no change. • How can I get a list of modified records from a SQL Server database?

  I am currently in the process of revamping my company's management system to run a little more lean in terms of network traffic. Right now I'm trying to figure out an effective way to query only the records that have been modified (by any user) since the last time I asked. When the application starts it loads the job information and caches it locally like the following: SELECT * FROM jobs. I am writing out the date/time a record was modified ala UPDATE jobs SET Widgets=@Widgets, LastModified=GetDate() WHERE JobID=@JobID. When any user requests the list of jobs I query all records that have been modified since the last time I requested the list like the following: SELECT * FROM jobs WHERE LastModified>=@LastRequested and store the date/time of the request to pass in as @LastRequest when the user asks again. In theory this will return only the records that have been modified since the last request. The issue I'm running into is when the user's date/time is not quite in sync with the server's date/time and also of server load when querying an un-indexed date/time column. Is there a more effective system then querying date/time information?

• how do I block my rails app from being hit by bots?

  I'm not even sure I'm using the right terminology, whether this is actually bots or not. I didn't want to use the word 'spam' because it's not like I have comments or posts that are being created/spammed. It looks more like something is making the same repeated request to my domain, which is what made me think it was some kind of bot. I've opened my first rails app to the 'public', which is a really a small group of users, <50 currently. That was last Friday. I started having performance issues today, so I looked at the log and I see tons of these RoutingErrors ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/portalApp/APF/pages/business/util/whichServer.jsp" with {:method=>:get}): They are filling up the log and I'm assuming this is causing the slowdown. Note the .jsp on the end and this is a rails app, so I've got no urls remotely like this in my app. I mean, the /portalApp I don't even have, so I don't know where this is coming from. This is hosted at Dreamhost and I chatted with one of their support people, and he suggested a couple sites that detail using htaccess to block things. But that looks like you need to know the IP or domain that the requests are coming from, which I don't. How can I block this? How can I find the IP or domain from the request? Any other suggestions?

• measure the response time of a link

  I am trying to create a simple load balance script and I was wondering if it is possible to find the response time of a server live? By that I mean is it possible to measure how long it takes for a server to respond after the request has been sent out? What I am trying to do is fairly simple, I want to send a request to a link/server and do a count down, if the server took more than 5 seconds to reply, I would like to fall on the backup server. Note that it doesnt have to be in pure php, I wouldnt mind using other languages such as javascript, C/C++, asp, but I prefer to do it in PHP. if it is possible to do the task, could you just point me to the right direction so I can read up on it. Clarification What I want to do is not to download a file and see how long it took, my servers have high load and it takes a while for them to respond when you click on a file to download, what I want to do is to measure the time it takes the server to respond (in this situation, its the time it takes the server to respond and allow the user to download the file), and if it takes longer than x seconds, it should fall back on a backup server.

  I am trying to create a web application which have a similar functionality with Google Alerts. (by similar I mean, the user can provide their email address for the alert to be sent to, daily or hourly) The only limitation is that it only gives alerts to user based on a certain keyword or hashtag. I think that I have found the fundamental API needed for this web application. https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/get/search The problem is I still don't know all the web technologies needed for this application to work properly. For example, Do I have to store all of the searched keywords in database? Do I have to keep pooling ajax request all the time in order to keep my database updated? What if the keyword the user provided is very popular right now that might have thousands of tweets just in an hour (not to mention, there might be several emails that request several trending topics)? By the way, I am trying to build this application using PHP. So please let me know, what kind of techniques I need to learn for such web app (and some references maybe)? • Adding property:value pairs from GooglemapsAPI to an existing json/javascript object

  I am trying to create a script that finds the closest store/location to a customer using googlemapsAPI. So I've got a json object which is a collection of store objects. Using Jquery's .each to iterate through that object, I am grabbing the driving time from the customer to each store. If it finds the directions, It copies the duration of the drive which is an object with the time in seconds and a human readable value. That appears to work, however when I try to sort through all of those store objects with the drivetime added, I cannot read the object copied from google. If I console.log the whole object, 'closest_store', It shows the values I'm looking for. When I try to read the values directly via closest_store.driveTime, Firebug is outputting undefined in the console. • Can't authenticate mobile client with node.js (using passport.js)

  I'm trying to build some CRUD application with node.js as a back-end API (express) and web-app (backbone) and mobile client (native android) as front-ends.(I'm node.js beginner) My server solution is based on the following great tutorial 'easy-node-authentication'. In my android app I have managed to get the user Google-Token after I completed the authentication step with Google Plus SDK.(mobile to google-plus directly request). I'm trying to understand and find right and elegant way to re-use a given google-token and authenticate again my android user through Google-Plus account to ensure the mobile client holds real token, then add a new entry (id, token, email, name) to my users table DB within my node back-end. The question is: what should be my next step in case I want to keep my back-end without changes? should I send a GET request with the token as a cookie to /auth/google? maybe to /auth/google/callback? another URL? Does this make sense at all? Please note: I'm aware to the fact the mentioned above 'easy-node-auth' solution is based on sessions and cookies. having said that, i'm still trying to understand if there is a convenient way to integrate both (android and node) as it works good for my web-app and node. • Error when using jquery webservice call to populate dropdownlist

• CSS file in a Spring WAR returns a 404

  I have a J2EE application that I am building with Spring and Maven. It has the usual project structure. Here is a bit of the hierarchy. MyApplication src main webapp WEB-INF layout header.jsp styles main.css I want to include that CSS file in my JSP. I have the following tag in place. <c:url var="styleSheetUrl" value="/styles/main.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="${styleSheetUrl}"> When I deploy the application, the CSS page isn't being located. When I view the page source, the href is /MyApplication/styles/main.css. Looking inside the WAR, there is a /styles/main.css. However, I get a 404 when I try to access the CSS file directly in the browser. I discovered that the reason for the issue was the Dispatcher Servlet mapping. The mapping looks as follows. <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>Spring MVC Dispatcher Servlet</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> I imagine the Dispatcher Servlet doesn't know how to handle the CSS request. What is the best way to handle this issue? I would rather not have to change all of my request mappings.

• Accepting a socket on Windows 7 takes more than a second

  Here's what I've done: I wrote a minimal web server (using Qt, but I don't think it's relevant here). I'm running it on a legal Windows 7 32-bit. The problem: If I make a request with Firefox, IE, Chrome or Safari it takes takes about one second before my server sees that there is a new connection to be accepted. Clues: Using other clients (wget, own test client that just opens a socket) than Firefox, IE, Chrome, Safari seeing the new connection is matter of milliseconds. I installed Apache and tried the clients mentioned above. Serving the request takes ~50ms as expected. The problem isn't reproducible when running Windows XP (or compiling and running the same code under Linux) The problem seems to present itself only when connecting to localhost. A friend connected over the Internet and serving the connection was a matter of milliseconds. Running the server in different ports has no effect on the 1 second latency Here's what I've tried without luck: Stopped the Windows Defender service Stopped the Windows Firewall service Any ideas? Is this some clever 'security feature' in Windows 7? Why isn't Apache affected? Why are only the browsers affected?

  I'm trying to use Qt to download the html code from the following url: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=nucleotide&cmd=search&term=AB100362 this url will re-direct to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/27884304 I try to do it by following way, but I cannot get anything. it works for some webpage such as www.google.com, but not for this NCBI page. is there any way to get this page?? • Trying to join two independent forms

  Hi, i'm trying to join two independent forms (login and register) in the same page. My idea is (just looking at the signin form): Create an action that shows both forms (partials): public function executeLoginAndRegister(sfWebRequest $request){ $this->form_signin = $this->getUser()->getAttribute('form_signin'); } Each partial calls to its action: form action="php? echo url_for('@sf_guard_signin') ?" method="post" In the actions i write this code public function executeSignin($request) { //... $this->form = new $MyFormclass(); if ($this->form->isValid()) { //... }else{ // save the form to show the error messages. $this-&gt;getUser()-&gt;setAttribute('form_signin', $this-&gt;form); return $this-&gt;forward('sfGuardAuth', 'loginAndRegister'); } } It works, but, for example, if i execute LoginAndRegister and submit incorrectly the signin form and I go to another page and then return to LoginAndRegister, i will find the submiting error messages... If i execute LoginAndRegister and submit incorrectly the signin form and open another browser tab, i will find the submiting error messages in the signin form of the second tab... Any idea? any better approach?
