• How do you plan for starting a new web system?

  I've been creating more and more systems recently and I find more and more planning and preparation I do before starting the project. I determine what libraries or frameworks I will be using, what languages, the basic architecture of how the site will flow, etc. I've also heard of other design processes such as hanging styrofoam balls to show where classes are and how they relate, which is a process I've never heard of nor do I know how it works. Is there any software that helps with this process? Are there any guidelines or steps or do you have a recommended set of steps or guidelines that you follow when designing a new project?

• How to create a web framework in C# without ASP?

  I've managed to get a C# asp page running under ubuntu/apache/mono, but I don't want to write my framework in these ASP pages, I want to use straight C# and then I'll use a templating language for my views. But I don't know where to begin? C# is a compiled language, so... how would I do this? Would I compile everything and then have apache hook into the (single) executable and pass in the the request URL? Could I request specific .cs pages and then have apache tell it to compile and then "display" it only if it's been updated? Can the "view" files be compiled individually to avoid having to recompile everything every time there's a change? Is there some "base" I can work from, or am I going to have to reinvent accessing GET and POST variables (by reading header info) and all sorts of other stuff we take for granted in languages like PHP?

• Problem with configure script

  I am running into a problem with the ./configure script for ffmpeg. My linux environment uses busybox, which only allows for limited set of linux commands. One command which is used in the ffmpeg ./configure script is mktemp -u, the problem here is the busybox for linux does not recognize the -u switch as valid, so it complains about it and breaks the configure process. Thanks. btw... simply removing the -u switch does not work. Nor does replacing it with -t, or -p. I believe the mktemp has to be bypassed completely.

• Regular Expression

  Ohh! this regular expression thing is eating my brain up. I have been reading it from Introduction to Automata Theory, Languages and Computer by Hopcroft, Motwani and Ullman. I have solved a few exercises too but could not solve the following even after trying for almost one hr. The problem is to write a regular expression that defines a language consisting of all strings of 0s and 1s except the substring 011. Is the answer (0+1)* - 011 correct ? If not what should be the correct answer for this?

• Python as your main language. Possible?

  I am currently attending college and the languages that I will 'know' by graduation are C++ and Java. That being said, i am also in the process of teaching myself Python. I know that every programming language has its own pros and cons, but would it be possible to become a python developer out of school? I always have more 'fun' programming in Python than i do in C++ or Java, and I am also in love with Pythons documentation. I know C++ will always be on top in terms of speed, but what would be the benefit of memorizing every javadoc against focusing on Python instead? are there good jobs to be had with Python? edit: also, would it be beneficial for me to look at C# as well? Microsoft is really throwing their support at it so that could be a decent career path as well.

• Why and How to avoid Event Handler memory leaks ?

  Hey There, I just came to realize, by reading some questions and answers on StackOverflow, that adding event handlers using += in C# (or i guess, other .net languages) can cause common memory leaks... I have used event handlers like this in the past many times, and never realized that they can cause, or have caused, memory leaks in my applications. How does this work (meaning, why does this actually cause a memory leak) ? How can I fix this problem ? Is using -= to the same event handler enough ? Are there common design patterns or best practices for handling situations like this ? Example : How am I supposed to handle an application that has many different threads, using many different event handlers to raise several events on the UI ? Are there any good and simple ways to monitor this efficiently in an already built big application ? Thanks in advance!

• Easy one? Access an object's property by using a variable in C# [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Property Name and need its value Hi, This one should be easy for most people. I'd like to access a normal variable in an object (let's say example) by using a variable value. E.g.: I have a an array with a list of variable names and I want to get the information from the object by using them. Obviously this is wrong: string[] variable_names = new string[] {"name", "surname"}; myObject.variable_names[0] = 1; myObject.variable_names[1] = 1; In other languages (not C#) I use: myObject[variable_names[0]] = 1; I know the example looks stupid but it was just a way of explaining it.   I know very well about the traditional arguments about why Interface Inheritance is prefered to multiple inheritance, there has been already a post here : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/191691/should-c-include-multiple-inheritance But according to Stroustrup the real reason why Microsoft and Sun decided to get rid off multiple inheritance is that they have vested interest to do so: instead of putting features in the languages, they put in frameworks so that people then become tied to their platform instead of people having the same capability at a language standard level. What do you think ? Why Sun and Microsoft consider developers too immature to just make the choice themselves ?

• Class decorator to declare static member (e.g., for log4net)?

  I'm using log4net, and we have a lot of this in our code: public class Foo { private static readonly ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(Foo)); .... } One downside is that it means we're pasting this 10-word section all over, and every now and then somebody forgets to change the class name. The log4net FAQ also mentions this alternative possibility, which is even more verbose: public class Foo { private static readonly ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger(System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType); ... } Is it possible to write a decorator to define this? I'd really like to say simply: [LogMe] // or perhaps: [LogMe("log")] public class Foo { ... } I've done similar things in other languages, but never a statically-compiled language like C#. Can I define class members from a decorator?

For integers values(like users putting in prices), i just: is_numeric(). --How should I use htmlspecialchars? Should I use it only when echoing and displaying user data? Or should I also use this too when inputting data to a dbc? --When should I use strip_tags() or htmlspecialchars? • Learn C++ after learning C#

  I'm developing a library in C# at the moment and recently bought a great book to help me out but the code snippets are in C++. Does anyone have a link to a site/PDF that'll give me a crash course in C++? (mainly the syntax rather than pros/cons etc) because I'll be developing in C# but things like -, ::, &, **, are giving me the shivers. Obviously the languages aren't 100% compatible but if I know what the C++ is doing from a 'theoretical' point of view I can make a stab at rewriting it in C#. I've had a Google to find the answer but all the sites seem to be "Should I use C++ or C#?", which isn't any good to me. Thanks in advance.

• What is your favorite colorscheme FOR PROGRAMMING in Vim?

  I think this is a relevant question for programmers and I'd like to hear other people's answers because some syntax highlighting color schemes are better on the eyes than others. This can affect productivity as much as ergonomic keyboards or anything else on here. It's about comfort and productivity. So, I'm curious. Do you find some color schemes better adapted for some languages over others? At the other end of the spectrum, I think coding without syntax highlight is awful and slow going. • Recommended ways to install USB drivers with a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project?

  I need to install a USB driver with an application, and I'm using a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project to create the installer. The driver only needs to be installed sufficient enough so that when the USB device is plugged in, Windows will go off doing it's "installing device" routine and do the rest of the job. It would be okay also to have the setup finish and then the user connects the device when required with the driver install completing then. However the user shouldn't be prompted to find a driver location. The USB drivers I have are available either as plain .sys / .inf files, or as a full installer (.msi together with a setup.exe wrapper). The full installer deals with combinations of operating systems and languages, but the application is for internal use and I can limit the target OS to Windows XP. Would it be better just to run the available installer via a custom action, or to install via the .inf file somehow (I'm not sure how to do that)?

• C++ corrupt my thinking, how to trust auto garbage collector?

  I use to program mainly with C/C++, that's make me dealing with pointers and memory management daily. This days I'm trying to develop using other tools, such as Java, Python and Ruby. The problem is that I keep thinking C++ style, I'm writing code as C++ usually written in almost every programming language, and the biggest problem is the memory management, I keep writing bad code using references in Java and just get as close as I can to the C++ style. So I need 2 thinks here, one is to trust the garbage collector, let's say by seeing benchmarks and proofs that it's realy working in Java, and know what I should never do in order to get my code the best way it can be. And the second think is knowing how to write other languages code. I mean I know what to do, I'm just never write the code as most Java or Python programmers usually do, are there any books for C++ programmers just to introduce me to the writing conventions? (by the way, forgive me for my English mistakes)

For e.g. I am having the following 3 records and my search string is 'Cal' 1)University of California 2)Pascal Institute 3)California University If I try string.Contains, all 3 are returned. • SWIG interface file questions

  I am writing a C/C++ extension module for other languages and I am using SWIG to generate the bindings. I have two questions Can I include more than 1 header file in the declaration part of the interface file e.g.: /* Declarations exposed to wrapper: */ > %{ > #define SWIG_FILE_WITH_INIT > #include "a.h" > #include "b.h" > #include "c.h" %} In all of the examples I have seen so far, after the header include declaration (as shown above), the functions declared in the header are then declared again in the interface file. Is this really necessary, as it means there are two copies of the function declarations that need to be maintained. Note: I can appreciate that some functions/methods declaration may need to be 'decorated' with the 'newobject' declaration so these obviously need to be in the interface file, to avoid memory leaks - however, I would have though that it would be sufficient to include the headers and then ONLY the declarations of the functions/methods that need to be declared with 'newobject' - is this recommended way of doing things?

  Hi I'm adding support for right-to-left languages for the UITableView. now I need to move the AccessoryDisclosureIndicator and AccessoryCheckmark from the right corner to the left. I'm taking the UIImageView path and Now I'm looking for 2 png icons: one for the AccessoryDisclosureIndicator arrow to the left and the second for the AccessoryCheckmark. Does anyone know where I can get those 2 icons? Is it possible when the user clicks on some cell to switch to the other view to the left and not to the right? Thanks

• Why do C# and Java require everything to be in a class?

  It seemed like this question should have been asked before, but searching found nothing. I've always wondered what's the point of making us put every bit of code inside a class or interface. I seem to remember that there were some advantages to requiring a main() function like C, but nothing for classes. Languages like Python are, in a way, even more object oriented than Java since they don't have primitives, but you can put code wherever you want. Is this some sort of "misinterpretation" of OOP? After all, you can write procedural code like you would in C and put it inside a class, but it won't be object oriented.

• How do I delete duplicates between two excel sheets quickly vba

  I am using vba and I have two sheets one is named "Do Not Call" and has about 800,000 rows of data in column A. I want to use this data to check column I in the second sheet, named "Sheet1". If it finds a match I want it to delete the whole row in "Sheet1". I have tailored the code I have found from a similar question here: Excel formula to Cross reference 2 sheets, remove duplicates from one sheet and ran it but nothing happens. I am not getting any errors but it is not functioning. • Looking for an approach to program a mobile website for any device. Are there any?

  My wish is to know how I can program a mobile website, that fit to all mobile phones. Are there any special approaches to recognize a device and render the code according to it? Which tools and coding languages are required? My first thought was to hold the website in XML, which would be parsed depending on the device. You have to consider old phones, even devices with only wap support. For example: The mobile website has to recognize Nokia N75 and render/send the code that looks optimal for this device. Same thing with an iPhone or a Motorola Razr.

  I develop applications/programs in C/C++. I am more versed in these two languages and love being a C++ developer. I am wondering how to create a Java program that contains all my C++ code. I mean, I would like to wrap all my C++ code (that is already developed) inside Java class. But clueless how to do it. Please post your responses or methods/steps on integrating C++ inside Java.   Beginners and professional, on blogs, in forums and chatrooms - people say it everywhere: C++ oh dear god no The short form of the question: For what reason is C++ so widely disliked and people are horrified by the imagination of using it for some project? I have been using a lot of different languages, including C++ by now, and I can only say that I really like it. I'm far more horrified by Delphi than by C++. Actually, I find it's an almost perfect, compiled language! I've been doing a lot of different projects in C++ as well, ranging from 3D video games to webservers and emulators for old video game consoles. And I still do not see the problem everyone else seems to have with it!

• Simple Hash that is always equal between C# and Java

  I have a C# WebService and a (Java) Android Application. Is there a SIMPLE hash function that produces the same result between these two languages? The simplest C# hash is a String.GetHashCode(), but I can't replicate it in Java. The simplest Java hash is not simple at all. And I don't know if I can replicate it exactly in C#. In case it's relevant, I'm hashing passwords before sending it across the internet. I'm currently using Encode64, but that's obviously not secure since we can reverse it.
