  • What Is The Best Scripting Language To Learn?

    I have been learning C and C++ for sometime now. But, they do not allow me to do a lot of things like writing a script/program to get a bunch of files from the internet easily. So, I want to learn a scripting language which is fun and which is useful for everyday chores. Which one would you recommend, and why? Other information that might be useful: References to tutorials / helpful information on how to learn the language. References to implementations of the language.     I have a search engine that searches albums. For each music album, I have a page. So, the work flow goes like this: People search for music titles The search engine displays a list of albums. People click on an album to go to a details page. I want google to index my front page and the details page. I want the details page to be highly ranked. How can I build a sitemap for this? By the way, I have about 5 million albums (but I want the top 1000 ones to be highly ranked on google)

  • Best strategies for reading J code

    I've been using J for a few months now, and I find that reading unfamiliar code (e.g. that I didn't write myself) is one of the most challenging aspects of the language, particularly when it's in tacit. After a while, I came up with this strategy: 1) Copy the code segment into a word document 2) Take each operator from (1) and place it on a separate line, so that it reads vertically 3) Replace each operator with its verbal description in the Vocabulary page 4) Do a rough translation from J syntax into English grammar 5) Use the translation to identify conceptually related components and separate them with line breaks 6) Write a description of what each component from (5) is supposed to do, in plain English prose 7) Write a description of what the whole program is supposed to do, based on (6) 8) Write an explanation of why the code from (1) can be said to represent the design concept from (7). Although I learn a lot from this process, I find it to be rather arduous and time-consuming -- especially if someone designed their program using a concept I never encountered before. So I wonder: do other people in the J community have favorite ways to figure out obscure code? If so, what are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods?

I'm looking for some help inserting tr elements mid-way through a simple table like the one below: <table id="content"> <tr class="item"> <td><p>header content</p></td> </tr> <tr class="item"> <td><p>footer content</p></td> </tr> </table> I am adding elements using jQuery with the following code: $('<tr class="item" />').insertAfter('#content tr:first'); However after adding an element using this command, I would like to add some more (but after the last added item, not at the top of the list) Im sure there are simple ways of doing this (by assigning an id to the footer element, and using .insertBefore('#footer') for example) but it would be interesting to know some different techniques that could be used.     I need to generate some passwords, I want to avoid characters that can be confused for each other. Is there a definitive list of characters I should avoid? my current list is il10o8B3Evu![]{} Are there any other pairs of characters that are easy to confuse? for special characters I was going to limit myself to those under the number keys, though I know that this differs depending on your keyboards nationality! As a rider question, I would like my passwords to be 'wordlike'do you have a favoured algorithm for that? Thanks :)

  • best way to make this app/website combo?

    I have an idea for an app that lets different bars upload drink specials via a webpage to that app. They would log in the website, and the website would prompt them with a box to input the drink specials. When they are done, the app pulls the information and creates a card for that bar. The app would launch into a week view where you select the day you want to see specials for. After the day is selected, it brings you to a scroll view with different bars' cards laid out vertically, each taking up the width of the screen, allowing the user to scroll through the deals for that day of the week. How should I go about doing this if I have very little programming experience? Is there any convention in doing an app like this? Can anyone suggest any reading material that would help? Thank you!

  • Passing enum or object through an intent (the best solution)

    I have an activity that when started needs access to two different ArrayLists. Both Lists are different Objects I have created myself. Basically I need a way to pass these objects to the activity from an Intent. I can use addExtras() but this requires a Parceable compatible class. I could make my classes to be passed serializable but as I understand this slows down the program. What are my options? Can I pass an Enum? As an an aside: is there a way to pass parameters to an Activity Constructor from an Intent?

    The question says it all really, I'm looking for book recommendations, video tutorials etc. I've been programming since I was about six so I don't need a book that spends 4 pages on for loops (thought that might be a Bad example in terms of javascript). Also I'm learning ASP.net at the moment so anything on interoperability features/issues would be welcome, though I'm guessing I just showed my ignorance with that question.

  • Replace umlaute (äüö) for SEO link in rails - best way

    Hi, I'm using the permalink_fu plugin to create permalinks from titles. My problem is: If the title contains german characters, they are just replaced with '_'. What I need is something that replaces ä with ae ü with ue ö with oe I fount String.tr but the problem here is that it replaces 1 character with 1 replacement, so it would work for replacing é with e ø with o etc. Does anyone have a nice and clean solution for that? Thanks

I thought at one point I could create a Select Statement to build my custom data and use that as the datasource for my Insert Into statement. i.e. something like INSERT INTO MyCustomData (ColumnKey, Column1, Column2) From (Select Top 50000 Row_Count(), 'Custom Data 1', 'Custom Data 2') I know this doesn't work, but its the only thing I can show that seems to provide an example of what I'm after. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

    Ok i have an issue i want to resolve. I have the following log file, and i want to parse it and find the errors and then compare them to user expected results and if it doesnt match then error or else pass.... the part that i am having trouble with is finding error within the log.... So in this example, within the log starting point is MASTER EXCLUSIONS:[ALL_EXCLUSIONS] errors: Then error can be in two format as show below. what the regular expressssion orcode that i can use to parse this and get pull out these error from count of 1 to end and i will just be able to take the array value for exammple results[1] - compare if == myresults[1] as an exmple.... outputting it in a file is ok too
