  • Best Methods for Dynamically Creating New Objects

    I'm looking for a method to dynamically create new class objects during runtime of a program. So far what I've read leads me to believe it's not easy and normally reserved for more advanced program requirements. What I've tried so far is this: // create a vector of type class vector<class_name> vect; // and use push_back (method 1) vect.push_back(*new Object); //or use for loop and [] operator (method 2) vect[i] = *new Object; neither of these throw errors from the compiler, but I'm using ifstream to read data from a file and dynamically create the objects... the file read is taking in some weird data and occasionally reading a memory address, and it's obvious to me it's due to my use/misuse of the code snippet above.   • Best way to create 100% width middle column with css

    Hey everyone, I have a pretty standard css layout where I use a container div that is 980px wide to hold everything. The only problem is that I want to have a 1900px wide banner half way down the page that is centered in the middle and is 100% width of the page. Is there any way to do this without getting rid of the container div? so I am wanting ____________________ | | | | | | | | | | | | |___| |___| | | | | |___ ___| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |___|___________|___| < 980px > container < 100% page width > Anyone know how to get that 1900px banner centered in the middle without deleting my container div?   • How to Force Graphics Options in PC Games with NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel Graphics

    PC games usually have built-in graphics options you can change. But you’re not limited to the options built into games — the graphics control panels bundled with graphics drivers allow you to tweak options from outside PC games. For example, these tools allow you to force-enabling antialiasing to make old games look better, even if they don’t normally support it. You can also reduce graphics quality to get more performance on slow hardware. If You Don’t See These Options If you don’t have the NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Catalyst Control Center, or Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel installed, you may need to install the appropriate graphics driver package for your hardware from the hardware manufacturer’s website. The drivers provided via Windows Update don’t include additional software like the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Catalyst Control Center. Drivers provided via Windows Update are also more out of date. If you’re playing PC games, you’ll want to have the latest graphics drivers installed on your system. NVIDIA Control Panel The NVIDIA Control Panel allows you to change these options if your computer has NVIDIA graphics hardware. To launch it, right-click your desktop background and select NVIDIA Control Panel. You can also find this tool by performing a Start menu (or Start screen) search for NVIDIA Control Panel or by right-clicking the NVIDIA icon in your system tray and selecting Open NVIDIA Control Panel. To quickly set a system-wide preference, you could use the Adjust image settings with preview option. For example, if you have old hardware that struggles to play the games you want to play, you may want to select “Use my preference emphasizing” and move the slider all the way to “Performance.” This trades graphics quality for an increased frame rate. By default, the “Use the advanced 3D image settings” option is selected. You can select Manage 3D settings and change advanced settings for all programs on your computer or just for specific games. NVIDIA keeps a database of the optimal settings for various games, but you’re free to tweak individual settings here. Just mouse-over an option for an explanation of what it does. If you have a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus technology — that is, both NVIDIA and Intel graphics — this is the same place you can choose which applications will use the NVIDIA hardware and which will use the Intel hardware. AMD Catalyst Control Center AMD’s Catalyst Control Center allows you to change these options on AMD graphics hardware. To open it, right-click your desktop background and select Catalyst Control Center. You can also right-click the Catalyst icon in your system tray and select Catalyst Control Center or perform a Start menu (or Start screen) search for Catalyst Control Center. Click the Gaming category at the left side of the Catalyst Control Center window and select 3D Application Settings to access the graphics settings you can change. The System Settings tab allows you to configure these options globally, for all games. Mouse over any option to see an explanation of what it does. You can also set per-application 3D settings and tweak your settings on a per-game basis. Click the Add option and browse to a game’s .exe file to change its options. Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel Intel integrated graphics is nowhere near as powerful as dedicated graphics hardware from NVIDIA and AMD, but it’s improving and comes included with most computers. Intel doesn’t provide anywhere near as many options in its graphics control panel, but you can still tweak some common settings. To open the Intel graphics control panel, locate the Intel graphics icon in your system tray, right-click it, and select Graphics Properties. You can also right-click the desktop and select Graphics Properties. Select either Basic Mode or Advanced Mode. When the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel appears, select the 3D option. You’ll be able to set your Performance or Quality setting by moving the slider around or click the Custom Settings check box and customize your Anisotropic Filtering and Vertical Sync preference. Different Intel graphics hardware may have different options here. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see more advanced options appear in the future if Intel is serious about competing in the PC graphics market, as they say they are. These options are primarily useful to PC gamers, so don’t worry about them — or bother downloading updated graphics drivers — if you’re not a PC gamer and don’t use any intensive 3D applications on your computer.   • Windows 7 Change internet time settings tells me I have no permissions.

    LS, While trying to solve my computer clock always running ahead (even when on, not just on every boot), I apparently broke some security settings. All I did (as far as I can remember) was stop and start the w32time service. Now, whenever I go to the "Internet time" tab, and click "Change settings..." Windows tells me I don't have permissions to do so. Facts I am a member of the Administrators group. In gpedit.msc, I checked that the Administrators group is allowed to change the system time.   • How to transfer files and settings from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 2008 R2?

    If I want to re-install Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit (or any other edition of Windows 7), I'd typically use "Windows Easy Transfer" utility built in the OS to backup and restore my files and settings. But in my case, I'm migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2. If I remember well -having worked on both Windows 2008/2008R2 before- "Windows Easy Transfer" is NOT installed on Windows server, and it doesn't even understand the format of the backup file it generates (".MIG" file). I can't remember for sure whether this is true, is it? And if it's true, what is the alternative for transferring the files and more importantly program settings to Windows 2008 R2? Of course I'm aware of the "manual" option and that automatic transfer sure will not transfer everything. Options??

  • How can I recover Google Chrome extensions, settings after a Linux crash?

    I'm running Google Chrome 5.0.307.11 (Official Build 39572) beta on Debian Linux (lenny) kernel version 2.6.26-2-686. The machine is a laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad X300) and sometimes it freezes, usually shortly after wakeup from sleep. The only cure is the power button, but when I restart my Google Chrome web browser after such an event, Settings on the Options menu revert to defaults. Chrome removes all the extensions from ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Extensions, leaving me with no extensions. The set of "pages last open" is lost. I'd love to know how to poke at the file system in order to recover any or all of this information, especially my extensions. It is a pain to re-do everything by hand each time. How can I recover Google Chrome's extensions and settings after a Linux crash?

  • What is the best file system and allocation size for a USB flash drive?

    I'm considering using my 4 GB Kingston DataTraveler USB stick to store my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles for my laptop and desktop PCs. I want to maximize performance when using Firefox. The question is: what is the best file system and allocation size for the fastest Firefox profile operation on a USB flash drive? I'm using Windows 7 on both machines and I don't care about compatibility or the drive's lifetime. I just want to maximize performance. I could even use ext2 with the Ext2 IFS driver if that means it'll be faster. I'm assuming (perhaps I'm wrong) that putting a Firefox profile on a USB stick would be a "lots of small files" usage. In that case, it seems that NTFS would perform best, but I'm not sure. Besides I found nothing regarding the best allocation size to use. Considering that the default allocation size is designed for hard drives (which have different characteristics), I'm assuming that the default allocation size is not the best.

  • Why can't connect with second computer in same LAN and settings?

    I'm trying to connect to WLAN with notebook. The notebook works fine with other WLANs. It can authenticate, signal is "very good" but it says "can't access internet". (On Windows it's small yellow exclamation mark on the signal). With other computer exactly in the same location, with the same settings, it's possible to connect. Both are configurated to get IP dynamically. One difference is that the other computer is using "Ralink wireless" instead normal windows client to connect. But does this make a difference? the settings are the same. What could be the reason?

  • What settings to use for fastest reloading of a MySQL backup?

    I have a MySQL database which dumps to a 3.5 GB backup (mysqldump) in about 10 minutes. But reloading this backup on a standby / test server takes upwards of 12 hours. What are some settings that would maximize reloading performance? The most promising appear to be innodb_buffer_pool_size, innodb_additional_mem_pool_size, and innodb_log_buffer_size... but I'm reaching the limits of my trial-and-error approach. Which of these settings "should" be the most important? Through trial-and-error I was not able to get more than 70% CPU utilization and 63% memory utilization. I'd like both at 100% during a reload. All tables are InnoDB.

    I share my VIM configuration file between several computers. However, I want some settings to be specific for certain computers. For example, font sizes on the high-res laptop should be different to the low-res desktop. And more importantly, I want gVIM on Windows to behave more windowsy and MacVim on OSX to behave more maccy and gVIM on Linux to just behave like it always does. (That might be a strange sentiment, but I am very used to switch mental modes when switching OSes) Is there a way to make a few settings in the .vimrc machine- or OS-dependent?

  • How can I let my users set PHP.ini settings for wordpress?

    I set up a wordpress server from a fairly standard Ubuntu 9.10 for a class and they're constantly running into problems with the default PHP.ini settings. First memory settings were too low, then the file upload limits were too small, etc. And more concerning was a wordpress wide blank page that I suspect was killed for ram consumption but turning on php errors in php.ini didn't reveal anything! I'm not familiar with shared hosting, but I feel there's a way such places allow users to edit such things without needing me to intervene and restart Apache.

  • Best way to "stream" music / video to my HDTV from my pc?

    My requirement is simple: I have a laptop and a desktop at home that I often use for various media (music, videos etc.) and I want to know what the best (quickest, most seamless, best quality etc) solution for sending this media to my HDTV (and connected sound system). An example would be I'm listening to some music from youtube on my laptop in my living room and want to quickly send it to my tv (which has a sound system) so that I don't have to listen to it through my laptop. I mainly use linux (but a windows dependent solution would be ok too if its the best option). I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Oh and a wireless solution would be best.

  • nvidia ignores the resolution listed in xorg.conf, even though I have 'nvidia-settings --load-config-only' on startup

    when my machine boots, I see a nice 1920X1080 resolution screen, but the minute I login to my user, it's reverted to an ugly 720Xwhatever. When I run nvidia-settings and select 1920X1080, it's ok again. What am I missing??? my /etc/X11/xorg.conf contains: Section "Screen" ... Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0; 1920x1080 +0+0" ... EndSection I'm using unity 3.8.16 on ubuntu 11.04, and when I check on gnome-session-properties I see that I have sh -c '/usr/bin/nvidia-settings --load-config-only on my startup.

  • How get OSX Lion to save Modifier Key Settings (i.e. swap Ctrl and Cmd)

    I use Lion at work with an MS Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Every single time I log in I have to go into settings and swap the command and control keys. This is really annoying. Is there a way to get these settings to stick? Beyond that, I'd also like to remap a few other keys and I'm interested in tools for doing that. I think I need to work out the first issue first though. Thanks for any help.

  • Jump handling and gravity

    I'm new to game development and am looking for some help on improving my jump handling for a simple side scrolling game I've made. I would like to make the jump last longer if the key is held down for the full length of the jump, otherwise if the key is tapped, make the jump not as long. While it works okay for simple use, I'm looking for a better way handle jumping and gravity. It's a bit buggy if the gravity is increased (which is why I had to put the last y setting in the last if condition in there) on keyup, so I'd like to know a better way to do it. Where are some resources I could look at that would help me better understand how to handle jumping and gravity? What's a better approach to handling this? Like I said, I'm new to game development so I could be doing it completely wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Best practices for team workflow with RoR/Github for designer + coder?

    My friend and I have started to try to collaborate on some projects. For background, I come from a PHP/Wordpress/Drupal coding background, but recently I've become more experienced with the RoR framework, while he is more experienced as an HTML/CSS designer, working with PHP and WordPress. We're both relatively new to RoR I think, and so we're trying to figure out our collaborative workflow, but we have no idea where to start. For instance, we were trying to figure out how he could do some minor edits to the CSS file without having to do a full RoR deploy on his box. We still haven't figured out a solution, so I think it's best if we start to set some sort of workflow based on best practices. I was wondering if you guys have any insight or links to articles/case studies regarding this topic?
