• What does Visual studio debugger do, when condition should give error

  I'm debugging some code and I need to break everytime, when character in string (const char *) is equal to something. So I put there breakpoint and attach condition like: s[0] == 'e'. But code I'm debugging is in CRT and there is possibility, that s == 0 is true. So "addressing empty pointer" should give some kind of error. Yes - I could give there condition s != 0, but it would not be such fun :) And I'm curious, what will debugger do when trying to evaluate this condition? How it will behave internally? Obviously it's not giving any error nor stopping on this breakpoint when s == 0 Thanks for your answer.

• What are my tool options to prototype a 2D multiplayer game?

  I'm looking for the best tool to allow me to quickly put together a 2D game that relies largely on networking. It's extremely likely that this game will require a server side program to constantly run. I have little experience with these things and since it's a prototype i'd like the easiest options for achieving this. I am looking to make this game for the web and mobile devices, although at present I only have access to ios hardware, (no android etc). I just want to get the bare bones of this set up so I can test it from the earliest opportunity to see if it's fun.

  It is almost and instantaneous whenever I talk to developers about Model View Controller (MVC) they say you make a request to a url the server builds a entity (MODEL) and provides you with visual representation of that model. • Can't install any Linux distro

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu on my step-son's netbook and I checked and his hard disk seems to be failing and i keep getting an error message that Ubuntu is unable to install due to hard disk failure. I was wondering how and if it is possible to install Ubuntu on this hard disk without it giving me an error message. I have tried the alternate install disk image and the regular desktop image and get basically the same error message. Is there a way to somehow override this and get it installed

• Software Architecture Analysis Method (SAAM)

  Software Architecture Analysis Method (SAAM) is a methodology used to determine how specific application quality attributes were achieved and how possible changes in the future will affect quality attributes based on hypothetical cases studies. Common quality attributes that can be utilized by this methodology include modifiability, robustness, portability, and extensibility. Quality Attribute: Application Modifiability The Modifiability quality attribute refers to how easy it changing the system in the future will be. This to me is a very open-ended attribute because a business could decide to transform a Point of Sale (POS) system in to a Lead Tracking system overnight. (Yes, this did actually happen to me) In order for SAAM to be properly applied for checking this attribute specific hypothetical case studies need to be created and review for the modifiability attribute due to the fact that various scenarios would return various results based on the amount of changes. In the case of the POS change out a payment gateway or adding an additional payment would have scored very high in comparison to changing the system over to a lead management system. I personally would evaluate this quality attribute based on the S.O.I.L.D Principles of software design. I have found from my experience the use of S.O.I.L.D in software design allows for the adoption of changes within a system. Quality Attribute: Application Robustness The Robustness quality attribute refers to how an application handles the unexpected. The unexpected can be defined but is not limited to anything not anticipated in the originating design of the system. For example: Bad Data, Limited to no network connectivity, invalid permissions, or any unexpected application exceptions. I would personally evaluate this quality attribute based on how the system handled the exceptions. Robustness Considerations Did the system stop or did it handle the unexpected error? Did the system log the unexpected error for future debugging? What message did the user receive about the error? Quality Attribute: Application Portability The Portability quality attribute refers to the ease of porting an application to run in a new operating system or device. For example, It is much easier to alter an ASP.net website to be accessible by a PC, Mac, IPhone, Android Phone, Mini PC, or Table in comparison to desktop application written in VB.net because a lot more work would be involved to get the desktop app to the point where it would be viable to port the application over to the various environments and devices. I would personally evaluate this quality attribute based on each new environment for which the hypothetical case study identifies. I would pay particular attention to the following items. Portability Considerations Hardware Dependencies Operating System Dependencies Data Source Dependencies Network Dependencies and Availabilities  Quality Attribute: Application Extensibility The Extensibility quality attribute refers to the ease of adding new features to an existing application without impacting existing functionality. I would personally evaluate this quality attribute based on each new environment for the following Extensibility  Considerations Hard coded Variables versus Configurable variables Application Documentation (External Documents and Codebase Documentation.) • Bricscad V12 on ubuntu 11.10!

  i tried to install bricscad from the deb file but is for 32bit systems.So i had problems and i downloaded the .tgz file and ran tar -xvf and i was in the directory /opt/bricsys/bricscad/v12 So i managed to run bricscad with the command sudo sh bricscad.sh in the directory this.So my question is, do you have any idea of how to make a launcher or smthing so i can run the program from an easier way?I cannot find it in dash(unity) or in the desktop. Any help will be great! Thanks

  Please look at this auth.log (from Ubuntu 14.04) I have provided and tell me who this gdm user is and why there are all these unauthenticated logins? I am freaked out; please help! But please look at the log there is more and tell me if my system is breached.

• Find directories that DON'T contain a file

  Yes, I'm sorting out my music. I've got everything arranged beautifully in the following mantra: /Artist/Album/Track - Artist - Title.ext and if one exists, the cover sits in /Artist/Album/cover.(jpg|png). I want to scan through all the second-level directories and find the ones that don't have a cover. By second level, I mean I don't care if /Britney Spears/ doesn't have a cover.jpg, but I would care if /Britney Spears/In The Zone/ didn't have one. Don't worry about the cover-downloading (that's a fun project for me tomorrow) I only care about the glorious bash-fuiness about an inverse-ish find example.

  I have developed a simple HTML5 webpage that uses a javascript file. This is a fun learning page so I wanted to know as to how will they show up on mobile devices like iPhone and Android smartphones. The pages are hosted on a server and i have tested the thing on my desktop. But, how can i test the same for these mobile devices. i.e. how the page will look on mobile and stuff. I don't have an iPhone or Android. There is no serious development going in here so i was thinking if there is some free website or tool that acts as a iPhone or android browser. • What Is .recently-used.xbel and How Do I Delete It for Good?

  If you’re reading this article, you’ve probably noticed the .recently-used.xbel file in the root of your User folder, and you’re wondering why it keeps constantly coming back even though you repeatedly delete it. So What Is It? The quick answer is that it’s part of the GTK+ library used by a number of cross-platform applications, perhaps the most well-known of which is the Pidgin instant messenger client. As the name implies, the file is used to store a list of the most recently used files. In the case of Pidgin, this comes into play when you are transferring files over IM, and that’s when the file will appear again. Note: this is actually a known and reported bug in Pidgin, but sadly the developers aren’t terribly responsive when it comes to annoyances. Pidgin seems to go for long periods of time without any updates, but we still use it because it’s open-source, cross-platform, and works well. How Do I Get Rid of It? Unfortunately, there’s no way to easily get rid of it, apart from using a different application. If you need to transfer files over Pidgin, the file is going to re-appear… but there’s a quick workaround! The general idea is to set the file properties to Hidden and Read-only. You’d think you could just set it to Hidden and be done with it, but Pidgin will re-create the file every time, so instead we’re leaving the file there and preventing it from being accessed. You could also totally remove access through the Security tab if you wanted to, but this worked fine for me… as you can see, no more file in the folder. Of course, you can’t have the show hidden files and folders option turned on, or the file will continue to show up. Want to get really geeky? You can toggle hidden files with a shortcut key. • Programming jobs for a science based degree [on hold]

  I am currently in my last year of a Masters in Physics at Uni and I am looking to go into a job that is mainly programming based. As part of my course we have learnt C++, Matlab and as a hobby I taught myself HTML, CSS, JAVA and a bit of JavaScript. After getting to this stage in my degree I've realised that its actually the programming side of Physics that I enjoy most. I've been working on a few Android apps & websites in my spare time but only things that utilize what I know in JAVA, HTML etc. Using Physics in programming is good fun but I don't want to limit myself just to Physics based jobs. I just want to know a few things: What kind of jobs can I apply for that would require the kind of skills I already posses/can work towards possessing in a year Can I compete with graduates who have had a lot more programming in their course for example Computer Science? Are there any specific extra things I need on my CV before I start applying for these jobs?

• Power manager keeps shutting down the display

  I'm probably missing something here. I'm using the default Ubuntu power manger, I set it up like this: On AC: no screen dimming when idle, never put computer to sleep, never put display to sleep. On battery: I kept the default settings. Still, Ubuntu does whatever it likes, and after 15 min it puts the display to sleep. Does anyone have the same problem and found a way to solve it? I'm using an Eee PC with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop.
