• Helping install mrcwa and solve problems with f2py in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

  I am sorry if this is the wrong section but I am starting to get desperate, please someone help me... I need to install the program mrcwa-20080820 (sourceforge.net/projects/mrcwa/) because a summer project that I am involved. I need to use it together with anaconda (store.continuum.io/cshop/anaconda/), I already installed Anaconda and apparently it is working. When I type: conda --version I got the expected answer. conda 3.5.2 If I tried to import numpy or scipy with python or simple type f2py there are no errors. So far so good. • Optimizing AES modes on Solaris for Intel Westmere

  Optimizing AES modes on Solaris for Intel Westmere Review AES is a strong method of symmetric (secret-key) encryption. It is a U.S. FIPS-approved cryptographic algorithm (FIPS 197) that operates on 16-byte blocks. AES has been available since 2001 and is widely used. However, AES by itself has a weakness. AES encryption isn't usually used by itself because identical blocks of plaintext are always encrypted into identical blocks of ciphertext. This encryption can be easily attacked with "dictionaries" of common blocks of text and allows one to more-easily discern the content of the unknown cryptotext. This mode of encryption is called "Electronic Code Book" (ECB), because one in theory can keep a "code book" of all known cryptotext and plaintext results to cipher and decipher AES. In practice, a complete "code book" is not practical, even in electronic form, but large dictionaries of common plaintext blocks is still possible. Here's a diagram of encrypting input data using AES ECB mode: Block 1 Block 2 PlainTextInput PlainTextInput | | | | \/ \/ AESKey-->(AES Encryption) AESKey-->(AES Encryption) | | | | \/ \/ CipherTextOutput CipherTextOutput Block 1 Block 2 What's the solution to the same cleartext input producing the same ciphertext output? The solution is to further process the encrypted or decrypted text in such a way that the same text produces different output. This usually involves an Initialization Vector (IV) and XORing the decrypted or encrypted text. As an example, I'll illustrate CBC mode encryption: Block 1 Block 2 PlainTextInput PlainTextInput | | | | \/ \/ IV >----->(XOR) +------------->(XOR) +---> . . . . | | | | | | | | \/ | \/ | AESKey-->(AES Encryption) | AESKey-->(AES Encryption) | | | | | | | | | \/ | \/ | CipherTextOutput ------+ CipherTextOutput -------+ Block 1 Block 2 The steps for CBC encryption are: Start with a 16-byte Initialization Vector (IV), choosen randomly. XOR the IV with the first block of input plaintext Encrypt the result with AES using a user-provided key. The result is the first 16-bytes of output cryptotext. Use the cryptotext (instead of the IV) of the previous block to XOR with the next input block of plaintext Another mode besides CBC is Counter Mode (CTR). As with CBC mode, it also starts with a 16-byte IV. However, for subsequent blocks, the IV is just incremented by one. Also, the IV ix XORed with the AES encryption result (not the plain text input). ECB encryption/decryption can be parallelized because it does more than plain AES encryption and decryption, as mentioned above. CBC encryption can't be parallelized because it depends on the output of the previous block. However, CBC decryption can be parallelized because all the encrypted blocks are known at the beginning. CTR encryption and decryption can be parallelized because the input to each block is known--it's just the IV incremented by one for each subsequent block. So, in summary, for ECB, CBC, and CTR modes, encryption and decryption can be parallelized with the exception of CBC encryption. How do we parallelize encryption? By interleaving. Usually when reading and writing data there are pipeline "stalls" (idle processor cycles) that result from waiting for memory to be loaded or stored to or from CPU registers. Since the software is written to encrypt/decrypt the next data block where pipeline stalls usually occurs, we can avoid stalls and crypt with fewer cycles. This software processes 4 blocks at a time, which ensures virtually no waiting ("stalling") for reading or writing data in memory. Other Optimizations Besides interleaving, other optimizations performed are Loading the entire key schedule into the 128-bit %xmm registers. This is done once for per 4-block of data (since 4 blocks of data is processed, when present). The following is loaded: the entire "key schedule" (user input key preprocessed for encryption and decryption). This takes 11, 13, or 15 registers, for AES-128, AES-192, and AES-256, respectively The input data is loaded into another %xmm register The same register contains the output result after encrypting/decrypting Using SSSE 4 instructions (AESNI). Besides the aesenc, aesenclast, aesdec, aesdeclast, aeskeygenassist, and aesimc AESNI instructions, Intel has several other instructions that operate on the 128-bit %xmm registers. Some common instructions for encryption are: pxor exclusive or (very useful), movdqu load/store a %xmm register from/to memory, pshufb shuffle bytes for byte swapping, pclmulqdq carry-less multiply for GCM mode Combining AES encryption/decryption with CBC or CTR modes processing. Instead of loading input data twice (once for AES encryption/decryption, and again for modes (CTR or CBC, for example) processing, the input data is loaded once as both AES and modes operations occur at in the same function Performance Everyone likes pretty color charts, so here they are. I ran these on Solaris 11 running on a Piketon Platform system with a 4-core Intel Clarkdale processor @3.20GHz. Clarkdale which is part of the Westmere processor architecture family. The "before" case is Solaris 11, unmodified. Keep in mind that the "before" case already has been optimized with hand-coded Intel AESNI assembly. The "after" case has combined AES-NI and mode instructions, interleaved 4 blocks at-a-time. « For the first table, lower is better (milliseconds). The first table shows the performance improvement using the Solaris encrypt(1) and decrypt(1) CLI commands. I encrypted and decrypted a 1/2 GByte file on /tmp (swap tmpfs). Encryption improved by about 40% and decryption improved by about 80%. AES-128 is slighty faster than AES-256, as expected. The second table shows more detail timings for CBC, CTR, and ECB modes for the 3 AES key sizes and different data lengths. » The results shown are the percentage improvement as shown by an internal PKCS#11 microbenchmark. And keep in mind the previous baseline code already had optimized AESNI assembly! The keysize (AES-128, 192, or 256) makes little difference in relative percentage improvement (although, of course, AES-128 is faster than AES-256). Larger data sizes show better improvement than 128-byte data. Availability This software is in Solaris 11 FCS. It is available in the 64-bit libcrypto library and the "aes" Solaris kernel module. You must be running hardware that supports AESNI (for example, Intel Westmere and Sandy Bridge, microprocessor architectures). The easiest way to determine if AES-NI is available is with the isainfo(1) command. For example, $ isainfo -v 64-bit amd64 applications pclmulqdq aes sse4.2 sse4.1 ssse3 popcnt tscp ahf cx16 sse3 sse2 sse fxsr mmx cmov amd_sysc cx8 tsc fpu 32-bit i386 applications pclmulqdq aes sse4.2 sse4.1 ssse3 popcnt tscp ahf cx16 sse3 sse2 sse fxsr mmx cmov sep cx8 tsc fpu No special configuration or setup is needed to take advantage of this software. Solaris libraries and kernel automatically determine if it's running on AESNI-capable machines and execute the correctly-tuned software for the current microprocessor. Summary Maximum throughput of AES cipher modes can be achieved by combining AES encryption with modes processing, interleaving encryption of 4 blocks at a time, and using Intel's wide 128-bit %xmm registers and instructions. • Compiz/Unity doesn't start at login

  Out of a sudden after I logging in to the 'Ubuntu' session Unity or maybe Compiz doesn't start anymore (actually I'm not sure wether it is Compiz or Unity). I can start Unity manually with setsid unity & and put the command as a startup script but that's not how it should be. I also tried a lot of "solutions" but none of them helped: checked for activated 'Unity' module in ccsm reinstalled lightdm reset Compiz and Unity reinstalled all Compiz/Unity packages many more... The question now is, how do I get Compiz/Unity to be started propperly at login again? I'm on 12.10 with Intel graphics.

  I am referring here to the design patterns found in the GOF book. First how I see it, there are a few peculiarities to design pattern and knowing multiple language knowledge, for example in Java you really need a singleton but in Python you can do without it you write a module, I saw somewhere a wiki trying to write all GOF patterns for JavaScript and the entries where empty, I guess because it might be a daunting task. If there is someone who is using design patterns and is programming in multiple programming languages supporting the OOP paradigm and can give me a hint on how should I approach design patterns that might help me in all languages I use(Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby): Can I write good application without knowing exactly the GOF design patterns or I might need some of them which might be crucial and if yes which one, are they alternatives to GOF for specific languages, and should a programmer or a team make its own design patterns set?

  From the unity-panel-service manpages: DESCRIPTION The unity-panel-service program is normally started automatically by the Unity shell (which gets started as a compiz module) and is used to draw panels which can then be used for the global menu, or to hold indicators. How can the unity-panel-service be non-automatically started abnormally? In other words, how is it arbitrarily manually started and/or stopped? The manpage implication is that this can be done without stopping the Unity shell. This answer seems promising: Is it possible to restart the unity panel without restarting compiz? but ... not. It's a clean install and I didn't get any log errors on install. I haven't added or removed any python versions. Can someone set me straight on how to fix this?

  Nowadays browsers and content management systems all have the plugin/module/addon/theme systems for users to extend at their own will. Developers can also submit plugin to share the plugin with others. The most famous examples are Firefox Addon and Wordpress Plugin Directory. I want to ask that if there is an open source web system specifically designed for this need - to host plugins? Not just one plugin, but all plugins for one software? Ideally it should allow developers to upload the plugin, have a public version for each update, and client software can check if there are any plugin available through the directory's API. As an example, a CMS can have one such directory to host/display theme files. Also is there a better keyword to describe this kind of system?

  I have many times seen various benchmarks that show how a bunch of languages perform on a given task. Always these benchmarks reveal that Python is slower then Java and faster than PHP. And I wonder why is that the case. Java, Python, and PHP run inside a virtual machine All three languages convert their programs into their custom byte codes that run on top of OS -- so none is running natively Both Java and Python can be "complied" (.pyc for Python) but the __main__ module for Python is not compiled Python and PHP are dynamically typed and Java statically -- is this the reason Java is faster, and if so, please explain how that affects speed.   Start with definitions: Yellow: Satisfactory. You could make some further improvements to this item. I have few sites using Google AdSense to make cents (yes, cents only). On recent update of Google AdSense, a new module called Scorecard displayed on my dashboard. In item Revenue optimization Text and image ads enabled , it is marked as Yellow. But I have already enabled Text and Image ads in all my sites. Why does it still having Yellow instead of Green? Is it a bug of Google AdSense Scorecard ?

• Network Access: I can't access 192.168.1.101 from 192.168.1.102.

  Hi, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on my PC with IP 192.168.1.101. every thing work fine, e.g. my web server is running and I can see http://localhost/ or http://192.168.1.101 properly. But the problem is that I cannot see my PC from my laptop at 192.168.1.102 e.g. at my laptop http://192.168.1.101 gives Connection timed out in browser. or trying to telnet on any port leads to: telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out laptop is running a fresh install of Ubuntu as well and there is no setup for firewall stuff in both computers. PS: Both computers can ping each other well. The router is a cicso linksys wireless ADSL modem. Currently, I can connect to FTP server on the Windows running on 192.168.1.102 from 192.168.1.101 without problem. • Ubuntu, Gnome, PAM and ecryptfs

  I would like to have a directory accessible to a couple of users, and not readable by maintenance types ... I can do what I want using ecryptfs and a password known only to the "couple of users" in question, who then can mount the directory and use as they see fit. I would love to be able to automate that process and unlock the directory at login - again, only for the "couple users" in question, without asking a password. Gnome-keyring is able to store passphrases/passwords encrypted; and, apparently, if I could get a key identity to ecryptfs, Gnome PAM modules would allow the key with that identity to be unlocked, and the directory could be mounted. Alas, I have found no way to go from point A (Gnome PAM keyring module) to point B (use the unlocked key in ecryptfs). Another use of the same mechanism would allow to build a "key escrow" mechanism, where keys to encrypted volumes are safekept with, e.g., HR; so that company information in encrypted directories can be recovered if you pass under the proverbial bus.

  I have a FORTRAN program that is called from a Python script (as an ArcGIS tool). I need to pass an array, Raster_Z(i,j), from FORTRAN to python. I have read about the Python subprocess module; however, I have not had much luck in understanding how to do this with FORTRAN. All examples I have found involve simple unix command line calls and not actual programs. Has anyone had any experience in passing a variable from FORTRAN to Python via a memory PIPE? • Bumblebee - Poor performance with games

  I have an Alienware M14x (GeForce 650m with Optimus) and got Bumblebee working correctly (trying to get ready for steam for linux :)). Also I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity. I get great framerates with glxgears and sauerbraten (a game on the repositories), but when I run games like Bastion and Splice, I get pretty terrible framerate, in fact worse than my integrated intel gpu. I have nvidia-current installed under ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates so it's driver version 310.xx. Also I forgot to add that I haven't been able to test other drivers because they seem to break glx (x can't load the glx module). I've been troubleshooting this for days now, and I'm very nearly out of ideas. Any hints on why only some games are running so poorly with bumblebee?

  I have two sounds cards, one is the on-board (it's VIA) the other is Cirrus Logic cs46xx. This is what lspci shows me: 04:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24/30 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01) It only show the cirrus logic, cause I disable the VIA card through BIOS. For example, they say: type in a terminal: ./configure but don't say in what directory. I think that isn't instructions for begginers... Right now I can't heard anything. I decide to disable the VIA audio card, cause I've read they don't get along with linux, although i use the integrate VIA video card. I have ubuntu 11.10

• Is there a solution for SugarCRM that can map roles or privileges to Active Directory groups?

  We're presenting SugarCRM as an option to one of our clients, but they want to drive permissions within Sugar by users' AD groups. Current LDAP integration with SugarCRM only does password management. Does anybody know of a plug-in that supports this? I've searched and have not been able to find anything. Has anybody change the LDAP module code within Sugar to accommodate these features? I'd be interested in chatting with you. • Is there a solution for SugarCRM that can map roles or privileges to Active Directory groups?

  We're presenting SugarCRM as an option to one of our clients, but they want to drive permissions within Sugar by users' AD groups. Current LDAP integration with SugarCRM only does password management. Does anybody know of a plug-in that supports this? I've searched and have not been able to find anything. Has anybody change the LDAP module code within Sugar to accommodate these features? I'd be interested in chatting with you. I apologize if this isn't on the correct site; neither serverfault nor stackoverflow seemed like the correct place. Perhaps webapps? Thanks!
