• How is a "Software Developer" different from a "Software Consultant"? What makes a consultant?

  I have seen a lot of people claiming themselves to be a "software consultant". These consultants do what a normal software developer does, write code, estimate tasks, fix bugs and attend meetings etc. The only difference being the financials, consultants end up earning more. Then how is a software developer different from a "consultant"? In addition to the main question, I would like to know how can a software developer become a consultant? Are there any specific guidelines for a consultant? Do they need to amass certifications and write up research papers? Please do not confuse the software consultant with a management consultant. Software consultants I have seen are not managers.

• Qt Certification Exams

  I'm wondering about doing a Qt Certification Exam this year, but I'm not 100% sure the investment is worth. I'm considering it because I think it could be a nice + on my resume, and as you know, I'm all for improving my software engineer persona. As I already earn a BSc and MSc degrees in computer stuff, I guess I see the certification process as some kind of adventure. Anyway, I know I'll spend a lot of time preparing myself for the exam and I just wanted to know if a Qt certification is worth the effort. Apparently there are 2 certificates that you can get in the Qt world: Nokia Certified Qt Developer (basic) Nokia Certified Qt Specialist (advanced) Nowadays I build cross-platform software in C++ and this exam would fit beautifully in my resume. My main concern is that, given the obscure future of Qt, I might be throwing time and money out the window. I'm looking for some advice regarding the usefulness of such certifications.

• Warning about SSL ceritificate, am I under attack ?

  Lately I've been getting a lot of warnings about SSL certifications on my pc, Empathy keeps telling me that Facebook's certificate is self-signed and can't be trusted, and also, there are occasional warnings in Google-Chrome about security. I remember the last one saying that that the page is secured but some of the resources that the page is using are not from a secure connection, something like that. Is my pc hacked / under attack? How can I check that, and if so, how can I safeguard myself? PS: One thing that comes to my mind is that I might be under an arp poisoning / spoofing attack.

  I was looking at some certifications that can potentially enhance my knowledge and market value as a Software Engineer. IEEE's Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) caught my attention. When I looked on the net for any user experiences with it I couldn't find anything substantial. Doesn't seem too popular. And I certainly havent heard of anyone in my organization or friends circle who have done it. I would like to know from community members if anyone has done this certification and their experiences with the same. Was the certification useful in terms of knowledge. Did it add weight to your resume (not deadweight!)?

Will that help me get a great job? I've heard some say that certifications will give you a cutting edge. I've heard others say that it doesn't really matter. What do you think? I am confused what to do next.Currently i have two choices. 1) Get good at C,Learn Python & write some good code/Apps & increase my employability chances. Or 2) Do some Java/.Net certifications to increase my employability chances. Any kind of advice/suggestion is highly welcomed.   I recently passed the Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 6 Programmer examination. Now, my boss would like me to take "the next step" to broaden my competence. I tried to explain that there is no equivalent Java EE 6 Programmer examination, but a number of different exams, such as Web Services, Web Components, and Enterprise JavaBeans. Is there a recommended path to follow for the various Oracle certifications in the Enterprise Edition of Java? Is it logical to take some exams prior to taking others because the content builds upon previous knowledge or are they all independent?

• Is the increase in earning potential for a software developer enough to justify the cost of pursuing a masters degree? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is a Master's worth it? I am considering possibly enrolling in distance education at Kaplan University in order to pursue my masters. On one hand, I would prefer to have more free time so that I can continue to study for certifications and play with the technologies that interest me, work on my little side projects, etc. On the other hand, I am wondering how much difference it can make for my career if I go ahead and get a masters. I have been a .NET programmer since about 2004/2005. I'm currently working in a stable position but possibly considering a move to phoenix when my company's contract runs its course. There is not enough time between now and then for me to be complete with my masters, but I'm just trying to consider whether I should start. The main thing I am trying to determine is really whether or not the increase in earning potential is going to make the cost of pursuing my masters degree a good investment. Any thoughts?

Underline Text in a TextBlock. Why do I care? I’ve seen people do some crazy things to get underlined text in a Silverlight Application. In case you didn’t know there is a property for that. How do I do it: On a TextBlock you have a property called TextDecorations. Get the browser information from a Silverlight Application. Why do I care? This will allow you to program around certain browser conditions that otherwise may not be aware of. So when you create a new Silverlight 4 project and deploy it your customers they will get a prompt telling them they need to upgrade Silverlight. They also will not be able to upgrade to your version because its not released to the public yet. How do I do it: Open up the .aspx or .html file Visual Studio generated and look for the line below. Make sure it matches whatever version you are actually targeting. Tip/Trick #14) What is it? The VisualTreeHelper class provides useful methods for involving nodes in a visual tree. Why do I care? It’s nice to have the ability to “walk” a visual tree or to get the rendered elements of a ListBox. I have it very useful for debugging my Silverlight application. How do I do it: Many examples exist on the web, but say that you have a huge Silverlight application and want to find the parent object of a control.  In the code snippet below, we would get 3 MessageBoxes with (StackPanel first, Grid second and UserControl Third). Add ChildWindows to your Silverlight Application. Why do I care? ChildWindows are a great way to direct a user attention to a particular part of your application. This could be used when saving or entering data. How do I do it: Right click your Silverlight Application and click Add then New Item. Select Silverlight Child Window as shown below. • Branding Changes for Java EE6

  Hi Everyone, As we move the Java EE6 exams from beta to production, you may notice that we have made a slight change in the branding. Instead of being branded Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), these new credentials are now branded Oracle Certified Expert (OCE). One area where we use the Expert brand is for credentials where the technology is advanced or broader than the path based credential requires. Some are high-end add-on certifications, and others have significant additional technological breadth. In these cases, the Expert brand is an indication that someone is tested in more advanced or in-depth skills - beyond the traditional path-based certification. A few examples are RAC Expert for DBAs, or SQL Expert - also for DBAs. Because (1) all of the Java EE6 credentials require that candidates become certified first in Java SE6, and (2) many people earn more than one Java EE credential, we felt that the Expert branding would be more appropriate. • Programers first day at work [closed]

  Next week I am getting my first job as a programmer in a well known company. I have worked in other companies before, but mostly in IT department. As you can understand, I am very determined to succeed in there. I have found some related articles in the Web, but I am not even sure they are written from developers. So I am asking you, to tell us about what will you do in another way if you could "reverse" the time, and what can I do to succeed. Of course "work hard" is one of them but what about book/article reading, certifications, good practises to make good impression to my team leader or whatever else you think would help? I know that it maybe fit better at wordplace.stackexchange.com, but this is a programmer oriented post and can only be answered by experienced programmers. Thank you.
