  • gnome-control-center can't set display resolution under openbox

    - by Andy
I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 with Openbox on my laptop. Since I need to plug different external displays into it and Openbox environment doesn't automatically pick them up, I thought the best solution I can come up with is to use gnome-control-center and it's display settings tool from within Openbox. But although this tool does detect monitors correctly, it can't do any change -- clicking Apply button just doesn't seem to do anything. So my questions are: 1) how to get this tool working? 2) how to run "Displays" tool directly from command-line, skipping control center? 3) is there a better way to automatically detect and set resolutions on internal/external monitors under Openbox? Please note I tried arandr too and it doesn't even work for my environment (doesn't detect external display plugging in at all). For what it's worth, my laptop is Lenovo G560, Ubuntu is x64 version with all the updates rolled over. Thanks for your consideration.

  • Flaws in my PHP development setup - sharing sources causing lags

    - by Wiktor
I have following development setup for my PHP projects: Working station running on Windows 7 with PhpStorm IDE. GIT for version controlling. CentOS on virtual machine (VirtualBox) with Apache and MySQL (copy of production server). So far, I've been sharing project's source folders between host and guest systems and it was working quite well only really slow. The reason behind this is that Apache was reading files from remote folder (mounted locally). After doing some research, I found out that this set up can be improved by using disk mapping (Samba) instead of folder sharing. So I did that change. I configured my PhpStorm to automatically deploy files to mapped drive. Everything works like a charm now, except for one problem - when I change branches I need to synchronize project's local folder with the one on mapped drive and that takes time, a lot of time (like branching in SVN). Is there another way to handle this than just working on files directly on mapped drive?

  • 12.04 run from cd, cannot copy files from mounted disk

    - by user75122
I am running 12.04 live from cd and trying to copy some important files from a mounted hard disk to an external disk. (My previous installation of 10.04 crashed and I want to install 12.04, and back up some data before that). When I try to copy files from the mounted disk to the external one, I get the following error: There was an error copying the file into /media/New Volume/L300_Bkp_2012_06_04/pics Error opening file: Permission denied Is this related to the source(mounted hard disk) or the target (external disk)? How do I get around this?

  • C++ Building Static Library Project with a Folder Structure

    - by Jake
I'm working on some static libraries using visual studio 2012, and after building I copy .lib and .h files to respective directories to match a desired hierarchy such as: drive:/libraries/libname/includes/libname/framework drive:/libraries/libname/includes/libname/utitlies drive:/libraries/libname/lib/... etc I'm thinking something similar to the boost folder layout. I have been doing this manually so far. My library solution contains projects, and when I update and recompile I simply recopy files where they need to be. Is there a simpler way to do this? Perhaps a way to compile the project with certain rules per project as to where the projects .h and .lib files should go?

  • Ubuntu not showing complete list of partitions while installing 10.04 and 10.10

    - by Ravi
I am a total beginner to Ubuntu. I have tried to install Ubuntu on my 320 gb hard disk and am stuck at the partition page. The problem is, Ubuntu is not showing all the partitions. When I run the live CD and try to see all the drives these are not present. I have presently 4 drives, C: 58 GB D: 48 GB E: 87 GB and F: 102 GB. The F: drive is not shown; at the time of installing it does not show any of the drives, just a chunk of 257 GB, hence I am unable to install Ubuntu on my D: drive. On the C: drive, Windows 7 64 bit is installed.

  • I can't get suspend, hibernate and shutdown to work in Ubuntu 12.04

    - by Fostext
I recently built a computer with these specs: Asus Motherboard, Intel i3 3.3 GHz dual processor, 8 GB of RAM. I installed 12.04 on a brand new hard drive. I partitioned the hard drive between root, home and swap like I have often read how to do. I cannot get this machine to properly shutdown. I have to hold the power button down now. Although, for the first few days it properly shutdown. I also cannot get the system to hibernate or suspend properly. I have read tons on this and watched many YouTube tutorials on how to fix both, but the computer never wakes up after suspend or hibernate. It just stays on a black screen. Can anyone help? I love 12.04 so far, but these setbacks are making me worried about stability and power management issues. Also, I wonder if it's really bad for the hard drive to force the CPU to shutdown.

  • Cannot mount Android phone and sync with Banshee

    - by Brett Alton
I can't get my LG Optimus One to sync with Banshee. I read somewhere that the root needs to have an empty file called '.is_audio_player'. I did that and it still doesn't mount. I ran dmesg however and it appears that the card is unmounting before I even have a change to run Banshee. • DataSets and XML - The Simplistic Approach

One of the first ways I learned how to read xml data from external data sources was by using a DataSet’s ReadXML function. This function takes file path for an XML document and then converts it to a Dataset. This functionality is great when you need a simple way to process an XML document.  In addition the DataSet object also offers a simple way to save data in an xml format by using the WriteXML function. This function saves the current data in the DataSet to an XML file to be used later. DataSet ds  = New DataSet();String filePath = “http://www.yourdomain.com/someData.xml”;String fileSavePath = “C:\Temp\Test.xml”//Read file for this locationds.readxml(filePath);//Save file to this locationds.writexml(fileSavePath); I have used the ReadXML function before when consuming data from external Rss feeds to display on one of my sites.  It allows me to quickly pull in data from external sites with little to no processing. Example site: MyCreditTech.com

  • Laptop won't boot or enter BIOS after deleting partition in Windows 7

I dual boot my computer and later decided to delete one of the Ubuntu partitions while using Windows 7. After my computer hibernated and I tried restarting my ASUS laptop it stopped at the logo and preventing me from entering the BIOS. When I take out my hard dive it allows me to enter the BIOS. It does not boot from a CD if the hard drive is still attached to the computer. After taking the hard drive out then it boots from the CD. Can someone please help?

  • Ubuntu install and boot failure 11.10

    - by Robert Moody
I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my machine alongside Vista, and upgraded to 12.4. I decided I liked 11.10 better, so I tried to install that again as my only OS, except I increased the size of the swap file partition to 2 gigs. It boots up fine off the CD, but when I install, it gives me a non-specific error, and returns me to the desktop. When attempting to boot off the hard drive, I get a black screen with a blinking underscore that starts in the corner, drops a couple spaces, and stays there. I managed to install 9.04, and am currently using that. The computer is a little outdated, but was fired up for the very first time last week, so the hard drive is in new condition and the CD rom drive is fine too. Running a 3GHzX2 processor. I ran a memory test, which came back fine, and being new to the linux environment, I've been scratching my head for the last couple days. How can I fix this?

  • Unity and games don't work on new Thinkpad T420

    - by Clay Smalley
Here's my setup: Lenovo ThinkPad T420, brand new NVIDIA Graphics Card 4GB of Ram 128GB Solid State Drive Intel Core i5 Processor Given these specs, there's no reason games and Unity shouldn't be working. The strange thing is that both do work when I run from a live USB, but not when Ubuntu is installed to the hard drive. Is there something different with the 3D capabilities of running from the computer as opposed to running from the live USB? Edit: Some more information: When I log in for the first time when running from the hard drive, Ubuntu says "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment."

  • Clone a VirtualBox Machine

I just installed VirtualBox, which I want to try out based on recommendations from peers for running a server from within my Windows 7 x64 OS.  Ive never used VirtualBox, so Im certainly no expert at it, but I did want to share my experience with it thus far.  Specifically, my intention is to create a couple of virtual machines.  One I intend to use as a build server, for which a virtual machine makes sense because I can easily move it around as needed if there are hardware issues (its worth noting my need for setting up a build server at the moment is a result of a disk failure on the old build server).  The other VM I want to set up will act as a proxy server for the issue tracking system were using at Code Project, Axosoft OnTime.  They have a Remote Server application for this purpose, and since the OnTime install is 300 miles away from my location, the Remote Server should speed up my use of the OnTime client by limiting the chattiness with the database (at least, thats the hope). So, I need two VMs, and Im lazy.  I dont want to have to install the OS and such twice.  No problem, it should be simple to clone a virtualbox machine, or clone a virtualbox hard drive, right?  Well unfortunately, if you look at the UI for VirtualBox, theres no such command.  Youre left wondering How do I clone a VirtualBox machine? or the slightly related How do I clone a VirtualBox hard drive? If youve used VirtualPC, then you know that its actually pretty easy to copy and move around those VMs.  Not quite so easy with VirtualBox.  Finding the files is easy, theyre located in your user folder within the .VirtualBox folder (possibly within a HardDisks folder).  The disks have a .vdi extension and will be pretty large if youve installed anything.  The one shown here has just Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on it nothing else. If you copy the .vdi file and rename it, you can use the Virtual Media Manager to view it and you can create a new machine and choose the new drive to attach to.  Unfortunately, if you simply make a copy of the drive, this wont work and youll get an error that says something to the effect of: Cannot register the hard disk PATH with UUID {id goes here} because a hard disk PATH2 with UUID {same id goes here} already exists in the media registry (PATH to XML file). There are command line tools you can use to do this in a way that avoids this error.  Specifically, the c:\Program File\Sun\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe program is used for all command line access to VirtualBox, and to copy a virtual disk (.vdi file) you would call something like this: VBoxManage clonehd Disk1.vdi Disk1_Copy.vdi However, in my case this didnt work.  I got basically the same error I showed above, along with some debug information for line 628 of VBoxManageDisk.cpp.  As my main task was not to debug the C++ code used to write VirtualBox, I continued looking for a simple way to clone a virtual drive.  I found it in this blog post. The Secret setvdiuuid Command VBoxManage has a whole bunch of commands you can use with it just pass it /? to see the list.  However, it also has a special command called internalcommands that opens up access to even more commands.  The one thats interesting for us here is the setvdiuuid command.  By calling this command and passing in the file path to your vdi file, it will reset the UUID to a new (random, apparently) UUID.  This then allows the virtual media manager to cope with the file, and lets you set up new machines that reference the newly UUIDd virtual drive.  The full command line would be: VBoxManage internalcommands setvdiuuid MyCopy.vdi The following screenshot shows the error when trying clonehd as well as the successful use of setvdiuuid. Summary Now that I can clone machines easily, its a simple matter to set up base builds of any OS I might need, and then fork from there as needed.  Hopefully the GUI for VirtualBox will be improved to include better support for copying machines/disks, as this is Im sure a very common scenario. • Deleted entire harddisk. Now my laptop won't boot anything and stuck at grub rescue!

    - by Jahan
My laptop is Dell Inspiron N4030. I used to use Ubuntu 12.04 and it was on the entire hard drive. I tried to install windows 7 but my laptop couldn't install it. So, I decided to delete the entire hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows 7. But after deletion I immediately removed the gparted live usb which I was using to delete the partitions of my hard drive. And then tried booting from windows 7 cd, didn't work, tried ubuntu live cd, didn't work, tried hiren's boot cd, didn't work, tried super grub disk, didn't work. Probably I'm not doing it right. Help needed badly.

  • Why does my RAID configuration with mdadm fail on reboots?

    - by Andy B
I have been running Ubuntu server on my machine for 2 years and it has worked ok. I would like to speed it up by raiding a few drives. The machine is used to host my Mysql databases internally. using MDADM raid.. I have tried 2 schemes so far with the 3 drives. 2 partitions on each drive 1 for the swap 1 for the O/S both of them turned into drives raid level 5 3 partitions on each drive 1 for the boot 1 for the swap and 1 for the root. The boot I set to raid level1 and the swap and root raid drives were set to level5 Both setup worked fine for about a week, then on a reboot things fall apart. by fall apart I mean I end up with a bunch of hard drive errors on the screen and then get a grub prompt. Why do they fail on reboots? I am eager to understand what I am doing wrong thanks!

  • Where is Nautilus icon file located and how is it chosen?

    - by Steve
When I plug my Garmin Nuvi 265 GPS device into my computer via a USB cable, it mounts as a drive with a blue triangle icon instead of the default gray hard drive icon. HOW does Nautilus know how to do this? After much laborious searching, I found that the icon info is stored in ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus/desktop-metadata/GARMIN@46@volume/gconf.xml -- but only when a custom icon is selected. So Where is this blue icon file? Why does Nautilus use it instead of the plain drive icon? Is there a way to have give each of my drives a custom icon -- so that when I stick in my various flash drives, they have a distinctive icon (i.e. a 'favicon.ico' file on root or such?) Using Gnome 2.30.2 on Ubuntu 10.04.

  • How do I get movies to work in my dual CD/DVD computer?

    - by user289178
I have an older Dell Optiplex GX620. It has an IDE CD drive and an IDE DVD drive. I cannot seem to get Ubuntu 14.04 to allow movies to play. I've tried installing libdvdcss2 as well as the libdvdread4. VLC was installed last, but each time I attempt to play a movie, the player flashed briefly, then goes back to the initial screen like I didn't even have a DVD in the drive. I'm fairly new to the linux world, so any/all suggestions would be helpful.

  • Problem in booting Windows Vista after repairing using a boot repair disk

    - by Pubudu
Been using Vista and I recently installed Ubuntu 11 in a separate hard disk(in BIOS, this hard disk was set for the 'Boot from' option)..Apart from the partitions used for Ubuntu, there are 2 more partitions(NTFS) in that hard disk..Then I installed Windows 7 on one of those partitions (just to see which Windows operating system I'd like to keep on using, along with Ubuntu)..But after installing Windows 7, the OS selection menu didn't appear anymore and had to fix it using the Boot-Repair-Disk... It kinda worked.. Now the OS selection menu is displayed.. But whenever I select Vista, it boots Windows 7...any thoughts on how to fix this? here's the link to the log generated by boot repair http://paste.debian.net/202691 I'm new to Ubuntu btw..

  • No inodes left error, df -i command says contrary

  • replacing Zorin OS 8 with ubuntu 14.04

    - by Paul John
I was trying to replace Zorin OS 8 with ubuntu 14.04 (32 bits). What I have tried: I took an empty pen drive and downloaded Ubuntu 14.04 iso file on to this pen drive. I then restarted my laptop (Lenovo N 3000) and pressed F12 I then selected the USB drive in the boot options. After sometime I got the Zorin flash screen again. I know I am "fundamentally" wrong in the manner how I am executing this installation process. If you could please provide me a stepwise instruction.

  • Why are Back In Time snapshots so large?

    - by Chethan S.
I just backed up the contents of my home partition onto my external hard drive using Back In Time. I browsed to the backed up contents in the external drive and under properties it showed me the size as 9.6 GB. As I read that in next snapshots I create, Back In Time does not backup everything but creates hard links for older contents and saves newer contents, I wanted to test it. So I copied two small files into my home partition and ran 'Take Snapshot' again. The operation completed within a minute - first it checked previous snapshot, assessed the changes, detected two new files and synced them. After this when I browsed to the backed up contents, I was surprised to see the newer and older backup taking up 9.6 GB each. Isn't this a waste of hard drive space? Or did I interpret something wrongly?

  • How difficult did you find the Java Certification Exam

    - by user22904
I'm just starting out as a Java programmer and have very minimal experience. I would like to improve my knowledge and study for the Java certification. I realize everyone will have a different answer but for those who have taken the certification and passed it, I'd really appreciate if you could tell me your experiences. Just a couple of lines to let me know if you found it hard, very hard. Also how much time did you spend studying. Sorry that this is not a good question. My native language is not English so it is hard for me to say what I want to ask.
