• Will a search engine lower the rank of my page if i have a hidden iframes?

  As a praxis, all external content on our site is put in iframes to lower the risks of any external parties injecting stuff to our users. We also do it to make sure our content shows up before banners, to make the site feel quicker. We now have an external script running which we want to put in an iframe, but it does not have any visible content to go with it so I want to put css "visibility: hidden;" on the iframe. I read in a forum somewhere that search engines will lower the rank of a page, or even drop the page, if a iframe has "the minimal size of 1x1px". Will a search engine lower the rank of my page if I have a hidden (or 1px big) iframe?

• Live USB does not work

  I've made live USB using these "Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.1.9", "unetbootin-windows-581", "YUMI-0.0.8.0" & "LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.18" in "FAT32" format, but unfortunately I could not boot using the pen-drive. My BIOS supports boot from USB drive. When I am booting from the live usb, it just show black screen with a blinking "_", but nothing happens after that( I have waited more than 10 minutes, but nothing happens). So, can anyone please help me on this? [Additional Info.: I've made Bootable USB using PowerISO and that booted, but it was not possible to access the USB normally afterwards,because PowerISO formatted the USB Drive as RAW(or anything I don't know) and it became 8GB to 700MB, afterwards I had to format it using MiniTool Partition manager.]

When I reboot the system, It shows the following. unknown filesystem. grub rescue I read the previous questions about this topic and I tried to install Linux again using usb flash drive but was unable to boot from flash drive. I do not have a DVD ROM... what Shall I do now to boot from windows...? thank you in advance....

• updating from 8.04 to a newer version?

  I have an old system. It doesn't have a DVD drive, and I think the cd drive is a bit wonky. The only disk that I have been able to get to install is an old (official) 8.04 Kubuntu disk. No disk that I've burned on a few systems works. They check out, but they don't seem to survive the install (another issue). I thought once I got a version on that I could update over the web, but no luck. It appears EOL. No updates seem to be available, or software to install. Is there a way? I'd like to get it to as new a version as possible. The next step would be to pull the drive and get a new one, but I'd rather not.

• How should game objects with fixed positions in the world be positioned?

  I have some game objects that are always at the same position in my game world as they make up some of the scenery of my puzzle game. At the moment, their positions are sort of hard coded in and some of their positions are calculated relative to the hard coded positions of other objects at the time of game initialization. This has been hard to maintain because whenever I've decided to change the position of these scenery objects as the game design evolved, I have to go and rewrite parts of the code that place the created objects and calculate their positions in the world. Is there a more maintainable way of handling the positioning of fixed game objects?

• Bumblebee screwd up my grafics-settings

  I had my system working pretty good with the external monitor working with the displayport. Unfortunately I felt that I should try to install Bumblebee. It didn't work. The monitor wasn't recognised. So I uninstalled it with the instructions on ubuntus wiki. But it didn't get back to the way it was. And when I copied the Purge-command it started deleting other stuff to, like Cheese and whatnot. I can't get the external monitor to be recognised. If I activate Optimus I get the right settings on my laptopscreen, but no Nvidia-drivers. If I deactivate optimus I get poor resolution on my laptopscreen, and still don't recognise the external monitor. But the Nvidia-drivers show up and can be activated. Why oh why did I have to try to install Bumblebee.

• Versioning Java APIs in a non-web context

  I have modular java application which consists of 40 modules. Some of these modules needs to expose external APIs which other modules or any external integration should be using. The system runs as a desktop application and each module is bundled as a separate jar file. My plan is to bundle the external api as a separate jar. But now the question is: how can I maintain multiple versions of the same API to keep backward compatibility in cases where it can co-exist? Are there any de facto standards on handling APIs versioning out of a web context ?

• True live USB: Fully Functional

  I can't seem to have the affect I'm looking for on a "Live Ubuntu" I want to run it from the USB drive, a fully functional, fully upgradable version. I do not want to use as a "trial version", or to set up a dual boot or run in a virtual system. I have kids that are killing my computer & everything on my HD, they need their own OS & drive but don't have the $$$ for a laptop for them, I just want it to work on the USB the same way it works on the C: drive

• Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening.   We cannot seem to install Ubuntu Server with USB as it reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option. My friend wants to try setting up a server so; we downloaded Ubuntu Server 10.04.4 we created a boot CD and installed ubuntu server no problem at all. But then the problem arose the hardrive we wanted to use is a 1tb sata drive and the computer orginally has 40gb IDE. So I bought a Sata to IDE and IDE to Sata converter from: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/52926/IDE-to-SATA-converter---Converts-IDE-HDD-to-SATA-inc-sata-data-and-power-cables Unfortunately this converter means I cannot plug in the IDE cable meaning I only have one IDE connection i.e CD drive has to be disconnected for the 1tb sata Hardrive to be connected. So now the 1tb drive is connected, powered it on opened the bios to make sure the hdd appeared it did as ST3ASDAPFKG (somthing like that). Fortunately the computer supports USB booting, so I read ubuntu server usb install instructions I tried: Startup Disk Creator & Unebootin Startup Disk Creator made the usb bootable with the 'ubuntu-10.04.4-server-i386.iso' All looked fine stuck the usb drive in, booted the machine up and I am quickly presented with ubuntu language choice. I hit enter to select English then I am presented with: Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, Check Disk for defects, test memory, Boot from first hard disk, Rescue a broken system I can move up and down the menu fine everything seems ok, I select 'Install Ubuntu Server', computer just hangs and screen either goes blank or locks. So I rebooted the computer loads the same menus fine, I select 'Install Ubuntu Server' hit 'enter' and the computer just restarts then brings me back to the same menu. hmmm Then I tried choosing the rest of the options separately: Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, Check Disk for defects, test memory, Boot from first hard disk, Rescue a broken system computer just restarts and back to the same ubuntu menu every-time. Grrrr At this point I wish I actually new how to command line install or something but I don't have a clue how to do that. So I tried hitting 'f6' for 'other options' and I tried them all in various combinations and individually. No Luck: (Expert mode, acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, edd=on, nodmraid, nomodeset, Free Software only) At this point I am wondering if it is a bios setting causing problems, I tried turning every option in there on off that I don't understand. No Luck. I then discovered by accident if you hit esc in the ubuntu install menu it says "you are leaving the graphical boot menu and starting the text mode interface" I hit 'Ok'. Next a prompt pops up saying 'boot:' One time it responded when I typed somthing with 'Cannot find kernal image (something like that but since then it just restarts when I hit enter in that prompt). I had a browse on the net and found someone suggesting removing quiet from install command for 'Install Ubuntu Server'. Made no difference at all just reboots... Orginal boot options noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed initrd=/install/initrd.gz quiet -- Modified boot options noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed initrd=/install/initrd.gz -- Still I cannot install Ubuntu Server by USB as it, reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option. This is a real pain as we cannot take the 1tb Sata Hardrive and swap it for IDE to be able to use the cd drive. Why is is it so hard to install ubuntu server with usb? I have wasted a full day and half on this really frustrated any help would be amazing! I know the answers out there just seems a bit illusive at the moment! • Ubuntu 12.04 Bootloader failed to install

  Sorry about the excessively long question, but I figured giving more information would be better. I recently bought a new desktop for myself, running Windows 7. It has two hard drives, and I wanted to install Ubuntu on a small partition on the second hard drive. I created 25GB "free space" in Windows and ran a LiveCD install. I wanted to select the install options myself but accidentally selected "Install alongside Windows 7," but it seemed to pick up the free space and installed itself there as I wanted it to. However, I was told that the bootloader installation had failed. I chose to "Cancel installation," leaving my computer unable to boot. I wiped my computer and reinstalled Windows. After that, I tried installing Ubuntu through Windows using WUBI, once using files from my LiveCD and once downloading everything again. Both times the install succeeded, but both times when I restarted and tried to load Ubuntu, it gave me an error - wubildr.mbr was corrupt or missing. I checked in Windows - it was indeed present on the C:\ drive. I went back to the LiveCD installation, this time going the custom options route. I assigned 16GB to an Ext4 journaling file system and 10GB to a swap file. I got the same bootloader error as before. Being prompted to select a different partition to install the bootloader to, I first tried the partition Ubuntu was installed on. A window came up saying that the install had succeeded, but a second window gave me the same error and choices as before. I went through every single option it gave me, including the Windows partition and the hard drives themselves (dev/sda, dev/sdb). Same result. I then chose to not install a bootloader. Windows still works fine, and I assume Ubuntu has installed but is unbootable. Knowing that my computer could potentially brick itself again - and, this time around, with a lot of data to lose and hassle to go through if I mess it up - I really don't want to do anything without some advice. So I'll ask this: a) Why did the bootloader fail to install? Can I fix the error and install Ubuntu fresh? b) Is there any way to get around the error, install the bootloader, and point it towards an existing installation of Ubuntu? c) Is there a quicker and easier solution I might have missed? EDIT: Thanks for the tip, AthloX. After testing the liveCD in Virtualbox with no installation problems, I looked around for some alternate bootloaders but had no success. I attempted another install, which installed the bootloader and Ubuntu just fine but bricked Windows 7. I wiped both hard disks clean, including some "System Reserved" partitions I hadn't noticed before, before re-installing Windows 7 on one hard drive and immediately afterwards installing Ubuntu on the other. Now the computer boots into Windows, but I can pop into the BIOS at startup to boot into Ubunbtu via it's bootloader, and I'm guessing it'll only take a bit of poking at the BIOS to swap the load order. • Need help partitioning when reinstalling Ubuntu 14.04

  I upgraded to 14.04 about a month ago on my HP Mini netbook (about 16 GB hard disk). A few days ago the system crashed (I don't know why but I was using internet at the time). When I restarted the computer, Ubuntu would not load. Instead, I got a message from the BIOS saying Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key I took this to mean that I needed to reinstall 14.04. When I try to reinstall Ubuntu from the USB stick, I choose "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" but then I get a message: Some of the partitions you created are too small. Please make the following partitions at least this large: / 3.3 GB If you do not go back to the partitioner and increase the size of these partitions, the installation may fail. At first I hit Continue to see if it would install anyway, and it gave the message: The attempt to mount a file system with type ext4 in SCSI1 (0,0,0), partition # 1 (sda) at / failed. You may resume partitioning from the partitioning menu. The second time I hit Go Back, and it took me to the following partitioning table: Device Type Mount Point Format Size Used System /dev/sda /dev/sda1 ext4 (checked) 3228 MB Unknown /dev/sda5 swap (not checked) 1063 MB Unknown + - Change New Partition Table... • Using NSpec at various architectural layers

  Having read the quick start at nspec.org, I realized that NSpec might be a useful tool in a scenario which was becoming a bit cumbersome with NUnit alone. I'm adding an OAuth (or, DotNetOpenAuth) to a website and quickly made a mess of writing test methods such as [Test] public void UserIsLoggedInLocallyPriorToInvokingExternalLoginAndExternalLoginSucceedsAndExternalProviderIdIsNotAlreadyAssociatedWithUserAccount() { ... } ... and I wound up with maybe a dozen permutations of this theme, for the user already being logged in locally and not locally, the external login succeeding or failing, etc. Not only were the method names unwieldy, but every test needed a setup that contained parts in common with a different set of other tests.   I am using a Dell xps l702x and I am using ubuntu 10.04 because I need to use f77 (don't ask) and I wasn't able to get it working on later versions of ubuntu. I cannot use the wifi at all. I have tried to fix it and have had limited success (changed the output from rfkill list all from Hard blocked: yes, to hard blocked: no). • iPad/iPhone duplicate view and resize?

  I'm working on an app that is similar to a Presentation application (Keynote/Powerpoint) for the iPad, that will use the VGA adapter to present on screen. However, if the presenter is using the external display for the presentation, I'm wondering if it's possible to have a miniature version of what's on the external display show up on the main iPad display (along with the presentation controls, which will take up most of the screen). In other words, I'm looking for a way with the iPhone SDK to "bake" the contents of a View (which will contain various Images and Labels in various locations) to an image (or some other static storage), resize it, and re-display it in another view. It would need to be smaller (since I don't want the 1024x768 external display to completely overlay the iPad's main display, only a corner of it), and either live-updating (literally an instance of the other View, just scaled), or be able to be refreshed, such that when updating the external display, the "picture in picture" version of itself would be updated too.

  I am running on a new dev setup for SharePoint 2010 and trying to setup some External Content types. I think that I have setup BCS correctly (since I see it running in the central administration). When I go into SharePoint designer 2010 and try to setup a new External Content Type, I get the following error: "There is no Business Connectivity Service associated with the current web context." Am I missing something with the configuration or why am I not able to setup a new External Content Type to point to my existing SQL database

• Ant Copy Task: Failed to copy due to java.io.FileNotFoundException

  I'm trying to compile a Flex application in Ant (no problems here, I can do it fine). When I try to publish the contents of the project to a Windows network drive (known as "Z:\" on my system), I get the following LAME exception thrown by Java/Ant: BUILD FAILED C:\workspace\bkeller\build.xml:42: Failed to copy C:\workspace\bkeller\web\assets\text\biography.html to Z:\web\bkeller\assets\text\biography.html due to java.io.FileNotFoundException Z:\web\bkeller\assets\text\biography.html (The system cannot find the file specified) Which kind of sucks. I can't find any way to get rid of this problem and it's pretty crucial to my project that I get this working. I know for sure that I have read/write/execute permissions on the network drive, I can create/edit/delete files on the drive just fine through Windows explorer. Drive Z is a network mount to virtualbox, allowing me to get access to my host OS, Ubuntu. I've double checked that it has write permissions. Any ideas?

• Bash scripting problem

  I'm writing a bash script to sync my iTunes music directory to a directory on a removable hard drive. The script works fine when there is absolutely nothing in the folder on the external hard drive. Once all files have been copied to the external drive, then the script begins to act strange. Even though i just sync'd everything over, it proceeds to recopy certain files again. • Java Web Service - Faulty Services - ClassNotFound Exception

  My Project has 2 java files (A.java and B.java in same package). A.java uses methods in B.java. And, an external jar has been added in the project build path. In order to create a web service (bottom up) from the class, I created a new Dynamic Web Project in Eclipse with axis2 as the runtime platform, and imported A.java and B.java source files. Next, since all my methods that need to be exposed are contained in A.java, I right click on it and created web service using the standard settings. When I deploy the web service on my apache, I get "Fault Service" and a few ClassNotFound Exceptions for some of the classes in my external jar file (I have already imported it as an external jar). Does the external jar needs to be imported in another way?

• mpicc hangs when called from makefile; runs fine as single command

  i'm trying to compile WRF (doubt that's relevant) and am having a problem where mpicc will hang when run w/ the compile script. icc and mpif90 have no issues. the compile script is executed w/ #!/bin/csh -f just to be verbose, here's an example. i run the script and get here make[3]: Entering directory `/home/jason/wrf/wrf3.5/external/RSL_LITE' mpicc -DMPI2_SUPPORT -DMPI2_THREAD_SUPPORT -DFSEEKO64_OK -w -O3 -DDM_PARALLEL -DMAX_HISTORY=25 -DNMM_CORE=0 -c rsl_bcast.c and hang. so then i run that line by itself jason@server:~/wrf/wrf3.5$ cd /home/jason/wrf/wrf3.5/external/RSL_LITE jason@server:wrf3.5/external/RSL_LITE$ mpicc -DMPI2_SUPPORT -DMPI2_THREAD_SUPPORT -DFSEEKO64_OK -w -O3 -DDM_PARALLEL -DMAX_HISTORY=25 -DNMM_CORE=0 -c rsl_bcast.c jason@server:wrf3.5/external/RSL_LITE$ compiles instantly. starting the compile script again does the exact same thing but on the next file. i have no idea what to do, and this is basically impossible to google for.

  I was looking for a way to create hard links under Windows and I found this page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc788097.aspx To try it out, I created a file (1.txt) on the root of my C: drive with 100 lines of the following content: C:\1.txt (2.598 bytes): test test test test test Then I open the command prompt and type: fsutil hardlink create C:\2.txt C:\1.txt Success, 2.txt was created but when I go to see it's size it has exactly 2.598 bytes and also noticed some strange behaviours (as far as my understanding of hard links goes): If I delete 2.txt (the hard linked file) 1.txt is not deleted, and vice-versa. If I open 2.txt after I delete 1.txt (the original file) the content is still the same. How does the fsutil hardlink create command differs from the copy command? And how can I create a true hard link under Windows? I'm using Windows XP SP 3, and my file system is NTFS.

• Embedding a CMS in an MVC Web App

  I'm working on a website for searching for businesses, then displaying a listing page. We've been toying with the idea of letting the clients manage their listing page using an external CMS. I'm not sure how often this is done, or if it's even best practice. Ideally, we want to be able to setup a listing on our website, then give the clients access to an external CRM when they can manage their listing page. We then want to embed this custom page within our website, possibly using an iframe (which will come along with it's own set of complications). We'd like this integration to be as seamless as possible. I'd personally prefer it if we could directly inject the HTML into our own page and bypass an iframe all together, but I don't know of any CMS hosting services that provide the interface for such a thing. We've experimented a little with Squarespace, and we can get a fairly clean version of someone's page which would be well suited for an iframe. I'm wondering if anyone else has looked and integrating an external hosting CMS into a website (in this case, we're using ASP.NET MVC). We'd also want to automate the creation of accounts on this external CMS, so when a user signed up we could just point them to the website with some login details. I have no idea if anyone offers a service like this, but any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We could host a service ourself too, but the aim is to have an external system that clients can use to manage their pages. Cheers, James
