  I have Resharper 4.5 and have found it invaluable so far but I have a concern; It seems to want to make every variable declaration implicit(var). As a relativly new developer how much should I trust ReSharper when it comes to this? Take the below code snippet from a method that Paints Tab Headers. TabPage currentTab = tabCaseNotes.TabPages[e.Index]; Rectangle itemRect = tabCaseNotes.GetTabRect(e.Index); SolidBrush fillBrush = new SolidBrush(Color.Linen); SolidBrush textBrush = new SolidBrush(Color.Black); StringFormat sf = new StringFormat { Alignment = StringAlignment.Center, LineAlignment = StringAlignment.Center }; Resharper wants me to change all 5 of those to var.   Hello fellow coders, I have a question about setting the style attributes for a data cell in the jQuery.DataTable. I was able to set the width for each column when initializing the dataTable using the following: oTable = $('#example').dataTable( { "aoColumns" : [ { sWidth: '40%' }, { sWidth: '60%' } ] } ); However, now I want to change the alignment for the second column like so: style="text-align: right;". I am adding rows dynamically: /* Global var for counter */ var giCount = 2; function fnClickAddRow() { oTable.fnAddData( [ 'col_1', 'col_2' ] ); giCount++; } Can you tell me how I can select the second cell of the added row after it's inserted? OR can you tell me how to set the style of the row before/during insertion? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• How do I create an ImageView in java code, within an existing Layout?

  I'm looking for an easy way for the user to see how many drinks they've had for a BAC calculator. PICTURE OF THE APP, for reference On button press, I would like an image to be added to the screen, directly under the spinner and with left alignment. When I press the button again, I want another image to be added to the screen. So if I pressed the add beer button, a drawable of a beer would appear below the spinner. If I pressed the add beer button again, I want there to be TWO drawables of beers under the spinner, preferably with them being added from the right. (Also, having them reach their width limit, wrapping around, and starting again on the left, but below a full line, would be AWESOME) I can't figure out how to do this. I assume adding a ImageView in code to a relative layout (because it needs to be positioned to the right) would be the best route, but if it's possible in xml I'd be more than happy to use that. Any help?

• ASP.net - Crystal Reports exporting to PDF adds the letter "i" to certain words randomly

  We are using Crystal Reports to generate pdf's of customer bills (from a CR template). It works fine except the engine seems to be adding the letter "i" to random words in the output. Certain alignment problems are also evident (words overlapping etc). Standard fonts are being used. We are using .net 4 and C# linked to the 10.5 CR assemblies. Latest version of Adobe Acrobat reader is installed on the server. We have now tried this via 12.2 CR assemblies with the same results. We have also tried multiple .rpt files with the same results.

• Why are functions loaded at aligned addresses in x86 Linux for elf executables?

  Hi, I've been looking at Linux elf executables on x86, mostly using IDA but also gdb. One thing I've noticed is functions are always loaded at word aligned addresses? Anybody knows the reason of that? I am not aware of any requirement of x86 instructions to start at aligned addresses. And it cannot be due to page alignment cause the page boundary can still be anywhere within the function. I would appreciate any insight at all. Thanks.

Oracle Multitenant, new with Oracle Database 12c, is a key component of this – a new architecture for consolidating databases and simplifying operations in the Cloud. With this, the inaugural post in the Multitenant blog, my goal is to start the conversation about Oracle Multitenant. We are very proud of this new architecture, which we view as a major advance for Oracle. Customers, partners and analysts who have had previews are very excited about its capabilities and its flexibility. This high level review of Oracle Multitenant will touch on our design considerations and how we re-architected our database for the cloud. I’ll briefly describe our new multitenant architecture and explain it’s key benefits. Finally I’ll mention some of the major use cases we see for Oracle Multitenant. Industry Trends We always start by talking to our customers about the pressures and challenges they’re facing and what trends they’re seeing in the industry. Some things don’t change. They face the same pressures and the same requirements as ever: Pressure to do more with less; be faster, leaner, cheaper, and deliver services 24/7. Big companies have achieved scale. Now they want to realize economies of scale. As ever, DBAs are faced with the challenges of patching and upgrading large numbers of databases, and provisioning new ones.  Requirements are familiar: Performance, scalability, reliability and high availability are non-negotiable. They need ever more security in this threatening climate. There’s no time to stop and retool with new applications. What’s new are the trends. These are the techniques to use to respond to these pressures within the constraints of the requirements. With the advent of cloud computing and availability of massively powerful servers – even engineered systems such as Exadata – our customers want to consolidate many applications into fewer larger servers. There’s a move to standardized services – even self-service. Consolidation Consolidation is not new; companies have tried various different approaches to consolidation of databases in the cloud. One approach is to partition a powerful server between several virtual machines, one per application. A downside of this is that you have the resource and management overheads of OS and RDBMS per VM – that is, per application. Another is that you have replaced physical sprawl with virtual sprawl and virtual sprawl is still expensive to manage. In the dedicated database model, we have a single physical server supporting multiple databases, one per application. So there’s a shared OS overhead, but RDBMS process and memory overhead are replicated per application. Let's think about our traditional Oracle Database architecture. Every time we create a database, be it a production database, a development or a test database, what do we do? We create a set of files, we allocate a bunch of memory for managing the data, and we kick off a series of background processes. This is replicated for every one of the databases that we create. As more and more databases are fired up, these replicated overheads quickly consume the available server resources and this limits the number of applications we can run on any given server. In Oracle Database 11g and earlier the highest degree of consolidation could be achieved by what we call schema consolidation. In this model we have one big server with one big database. Individual applications are installed in separate schemas or table-owners. Database overheads are shared between all applications, which affords maximum consolidation. The shortcomings are that application changes are often required. There is no tenant isolation. One bad apple can spoil the whole batch. New Architecture & Benefits In Oracle Database 12c, we have a new multitenant architecture, featuring pluggable databases. This delivers all the resource utilization advantages of schema consolidation with none of the downsides. There are two parts to the term “pluggable database”: "pluggable", which is new, and "database", which is familiar.  Before we get to the exciting new stuff let’s discuss what hasn’t changed. A pluggable database is a fully functional Oracle database. It’s not watered down in any way. From the perspective of an application or an end user it hasn’t changed at all. This is very important because it means that no application changes are required to adopt this new architecture. There are many thousands of applications built on Oracle databases and they are all ready to run on Oracle Multitenant. So we have these self-contained pluggable databases (PDBs), and as their name suggests, they are plugged into a multitenant container database (CDB). The CDB behaves as a single database from the operations point of view. Very much as we had with the schema consolidation model, we only have a single set of Oracle background processes and a single, shared database memory requirement. This gives us very high consolidation density, which affords maximum reduction in capital expenses (CapEx). By performing management operations at the CDB level – “managing many as one” – we can achieve great reductions in operating expenses (OpEx) as well, but we retain granular control where appropriate. Furthermore, the “pluggability” capability gives us portability and this adds a tremendous amount of agility. We can simply unplug a PDB from one CDB and plug it into another CDB, for example to move it from one SLA tier to another. I'll explore all these new capabilities in much more detail in a future posting.  Use Cases We can identify a number of use cases for Oracle Multitenant. High volume data distribution literally via disk drives in envelopes distributed by truck! - distribution of things like GIS or MDM master databases …various others! Benefits Previous approaches to consolidation have involved a trade-off between reductions in Capital Expenses (CapEx) and Operating Expenses (OpEx), and they’ve usually come at the expense of agility. With Oracle Multitenant you can have your cake and eat it: Minimize CapEx More Applications per server Minimize OpEx Manage many as one Standardized procedures and services Rapid provisioning Maximize Agility Cloning for development and testing Portability through pluggability Scalability with RAC Ease of Adoption Applications run unchanged It’s a pure deployment choice. Neither the database backend nor the application needs to be changed. In future postings I’ll explore various aspects in more detail. • How can I vertically center an element with GWT?

  Perhaps I haven't been searching the right way but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to center an element using GWT Layout Panels. I'm using UiBinder and I've tried all panels that implement HasVerticalAlignment (DockPanel, HorizontalPanel, VerticalPanel). None of them seem to have any impact from setting vertical alignment (or even horizontal). I've made sure they're taking 100% width and height, inspected the resulting DOM layout from my browser and nothing seems to be changed from those properties. The quick and dirty fix I've figured out is to create my own "CenterPanel" widget which basically is a wrapper around a HTMLPanel with a HTML table with a valign="middle" cell. However, this basically feels like a throwback to the classical css-layout middle centering problems. Surely GWT has something to do this that I've completely overlooked?

  Hi, I have a problem with IE (all versions). I have a header div with a relative position and inside this another div with absolute position and right alignment. <div id="header" style="position: relative; width: 1000px; height: 60px;"> content http://stadtwerke-bitburg.de/fileadmin/overflow_prob_IE.png Now when I open the pulldown menu in FF/Safari/Opera everything is all right. Whereas in IE everything which is taller than 60px disappears behind my header div. Is there a workaround for this problem with CSS or do I have to write javascript to get this fixed? thx TC

  Hello, quick question: I'd like to create some custom data types, but I don't think I'm asking the right question(s). There are "compound Boolean" values used throughout .NET, and I want to design some of my own. I've been using a series of Boolean variables, which works, but just isn't the same. Examples from .NET include: Color.Black Alignment.Centered [fontProperties].Bold* *I forget the actual name, but you get the idea I want to make something like this: ColorSortQualities None DistinguishColor DistinguishNumberOfColors DistinguishColorPattern Once that's been declared, I could do this: if(searchOptions.ColorSortQualities == DistinguishColor) [do stuff] What is this called? • About enumerations in Delphi and c++ in 64-bit environments

  I recently had to work around the different default sizes used for enumerations in Delphi and c++ since i have to use a c++ dll from a delphi application. On function call returns an array of structs (or records in delphi), the first element of which is an enum. To make this work, I use packed records (or aligned(1)-structs). However, since delphi selects the size of an enum-variable dynamically by default and uses the smallest datatype possible (it was a byte in my case), but C++ uses an int for enums, my data was not interpreted correctly. Delphi offers a compiler switch to work around this, so the declaration of the enum becomes {$Z4} TTypeofLight = ( V3d_AMBIENT, V3d_DIRECTIONAL, V3d_POSITIONAL, V3d_SPOT ); {$Z1} My Questions are: What will become of my structs when they are compiled on/for a 64-bit environment? Does the default c++ integer grow to 8 Bytes? Are there other memory alignment / data type size modifications (other than pointers)?

• Are indivisible operations still indivisible on multiprocessor and multicore systems?

  As per the title, plus what are the limitations and gotchas. For example, on x86 processors, alignment for most data types is optional - an optimisation rather than a requirement. That means that a pointer may be stored at an unaligned address, which in turn means that pointer might be split over a cache page boundary. Obviously this could be done if you work hard enough on any processor (picking out particular bytes etc), but not in a way where you'd still expect the write operation to be indivisible. I seriously doubt that a multicore processor can ensure that other cores can guarantee a consistent all-before or all-after view of a written pointer in this unaligned-write-crossing-a-page-boundary situation. Am I right? And are there any similar gotchas I haven't thought of?

• Flex 4 how to layout spark controls in an html table type way

  I have a group of controls and I want to organize them in a table like fashion. I want 1 row and 6 columns. Col 1,3,4,5,6 should all auto size to the contents and col 2 should take up the remaining available space. When the size of the group changes, only col2 width should change. I also want to be able to set the alignment of each cell. How can I do this in flex 4? I found a reference to mx:constraintColumns but this seems to be used with the canvas and in flex 4 adobe suggests not using canvases. Is there something similar in flex 4? I'm looking for something along the lines of Grid/Grid.ColumnDefinitions in silverlight.

• fieldset form with Table-like layout with CSS?

  I have an application in which I'm currently using a two column table in order to get accurate cell alignment of the left column labels/descriptions with the right column form fields. I'd like to convert it to css and use jQuery to expand/collapse specific sections. I've seen some jQuery libraries, the menu.js in particular. And they appear to all use list items for the markup. I'm OK with converting my table to UL/LI structure if that's what I need to do. Just looking for some advice.

• Android views' borders issue on some devices

  Hi there, Some users have been reporting border alignment issues on some android components such as the alert popup or the editTexts. This is happening on the Samsung Galaxy Apollo (200x400) and the HTC Pro Touch (480x640) devices. I cannot replicate that because i don't own those devices and in the Samsung Galaxy S and emulator everything looks just right. I think that the problem is the dpi or resolution of the device (because the edittext background is a single .9.png so image should look ok); however I am not sure if the supports-screens tag is the solution. Also, application was developed using Api 3 (v1.5) and supports-screens was not yet supported, nor the screen-size resource qualifier. The style used for the alerts and editText is the phone default. Could the problem be something related with the theme applied to the phone by the user? • Google App Engine - Document Editor Creation/Tap Into Google Docs?

  What is the best way to create a custom document editor in GAE? I'm making a website meant for a School Robotics Club (With support for any other organization - DRY). We currently use Google services for online collaboration, I'm wondering if there is a way to tap into Google Docs and allow users to edit a Google Document without using Google Accounts or the Google Doc interface. If that is not possible (I've researched and I don't think it is), what is the best way to make a document editor? I want it completely on the website I'm creating, so I'm assuming just some javascript editor like TinyMCE + Ajax + Datastore. Is their anything that replicates Google Doc's/Microsoft Offices's/OpenOffice.org's feature set as far as fonts, spacing, alignment, justification, etc.?

• Looking for examples of good IDEs to analyze for Form/Report design

Some of the features i'm looking to implement are: Single or multiple selection of objects Alignment of objects (when several are selected) Same-sizing of objects (when several are selected) Moving/dragging of selected object(s) Selected object resizing in eight directions (using object grips) For features and look-and-feel I've analyzed and used a mixture of ideas from: MS Visual Studio 200x (most useful so far) Visio Crystal Reports My question is: Have I overlooked some other IDEs that provide these kinds of features that are better and user-friendlier examples of what to do than others i've looked at? (They don't have to be Microsoft products. That's just what i have ready access to.)

• C++ Thread Safe Integer

  Hello everyone, I have currently created a C++ class for a thread safe integer which simply stores an integer privately and has public get a set functions which use a boost::mutex to ensure that only one change at a time can be applied to the integer. Is this the most efficient way to do it, I have been informed that mutexes are quite resource intensive? The class is used a lot, very rapidly so it could well be a bottleneck... Googleing C++ Thread Safe Integer returns unclear views and oppinions on the thread safety of integer operations on different architectures. Some say that a 32bit int on a 32bit arch is safe, but 64 on 32 isn't due to 'alignment' Others say it is compiler/OS specific (which I don't doubt). I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on 32 bit machines, some have dual cores and so threads may be executed simultaneously on different cores in some cases and I am using GCC 4.4's g++ compiler. • Checkbox in a Crystal Report

  What is the best way to display a checkbox in a Crystal Report? Example: My report has a box for "Male" and "Female", and one should be checked. My current workaround is to draw a small graphical square, and line it up with a formula which goes like this: if {table.gender} = "M" then "X" else " " This is a poor solution, because changing the font misaligns my "X" and the box around it, and it is absurdly tedious to squint at the screen and get a pixel-perfect alignment for every box (there are dozens). Does anyone have a better solution? I've thought about using the old-style terminal characters, but I'm not sure if they display properly in Crystal. Edit: I'm using Crystal XI.

• Circular dock/menu in css or jquery

  Is it possible to have a circular menu or dock using css or jquery.? I have a set of images as the dock items that need to be displayed as a circular dock... however the number of items in the dock are not constant and may vary.... so i cannot tend to use constant values for positioning each item in a pre-defined manner. Ajax loads some images into this particular div and i need to use css or jquery to style this so that they get displayed as circular dock items. Any idea on how this can be implemented..? I would like a browser in-specific implementation, but i also welcome if some one has some solutions specific to few browsers... UPDATE I don't think i exactly want a pie menu... it easily gets messed up as the number of dock items increase. I am looking for a spiral dock. and by spiral i mean that the menu items must be in the following alignment..

• How can I leverage String constants in an XML file?

  I'd like to enforce standardized keys by storing them as static final String variables on a Java class, and either referencing or statically importing them, to use them as values in either XML, Strings, Methods, Annotations, etc. Does anyone know a good way to have Maven insert (like filtering) values like StringKeys.SOME_KEY into an XML file? e.g. something like <element value="${StringKeys.SOME_KEY}"/> or similar - the main idea is to enforce commonality and prevent key mis-alignment. Or an alternative solution to accomplish the same - with some semantic that if a non-existant String is referenced, that it fails during build? Bonus points if it works in C# as well.
