    Does there exist a product out there that attaches to your PC (preferably USB) that enables Infrared signals to be received (by a regular remote control) ? It seems a novel idea to be able to get a programmable remote that can be used to manipulate windows (like the Harmony remote control series) along with some programmable software (preferably Windows supported) to convert any button on a regular remote to some command on the PC. Does this exist? What is it called? This particular instance you are REQUIRED to use the crappy supplied remote, and this is not what I am looking for

  • Update to recent stable php in Ubuntu 12.04

    We run an Ubuntu 12.04 server where php 5.3.10 is installed by default. I thought Ubuntu did only apply bugfixes in their updates, so micros like 5.3.x should pass through. Apparently, our version isn't updated, but we are stuck with a critical bug in php which is solved in 5.3.15. Should I wait longer for this release to bubble up? Or are there safe repositories to use for Ubuntu to continuously update php and php related packages?

  • PHP: gethostbyname() suddenly no longer resolves names to IPs when run in Apache

    One of our older legacy servers which gets no further updates or reconfigurations suddenly stopped resolving hostnames to IPs when PHP is executed within Apache. However, it still works fine when executed from the CLI. From the RSS caches last modification time, I deduce that it stopped working on around Mar, 28th. To reproduce the problem, I created a script using fsockopen() and it said "connection failed (errno 2)". I further reduced the problem to being related with a failed name resolution: <?php $addr = gethostbyname("twitter.com"); echo "ADDR($addr)"; ?> When I run this through Apache, the output is ADDR(twitter.com), which is wrong. When I run this from the CLI, the output is ADDR(aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd) with varying IP addresses, as expected. Nothing on the server setup has changed. CLI and Apache module share the same php.ini. PHP is version v4.4.9 with Zend Optimizer v2.5.10. Apache is v1.3.31. I know the versions are old. But since nothing has been changed, a solution like "try to upgrade versions first" is no solution as the server's feature set/versioning is frozen and will be replaced soon. Still we need a solution. If I run dig through the script, it works in both environments (mod_php and CLI) but this is more than an ugly hack as it would involve many edits and testing throughout the whole script base which is also undesired as the PHP application on the server is frozen, too, and only receives security updates. It will be replaced by a complete rewrite (on the new server). But as the rewrite will take some time and successive replace parts of the legacy application, we need a fix for the resolver problem. I already googled a bit and while the problem is known, many did not find a fix. The fix to raise memory limits did not work. Restarts did not work. The resolver in mod_php just did stop working for no apparent reason. :-(

    I wonder if it would be possible to "upgrade" from an OpenIndiana install (151a) to the current Solaris release (11.1) using the IPS. What I have done so far: added the "solaris" publisher using pkg set-publisher -g http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release/ solaris removed the "opensolaris.org" and "openindiana.org" publishers (just to make sure) tried to start the update process using pkg update --accept or explicitly setting the release name pkg image-update --accept --be-name Solaris_11 - both backed out stating there are "No updates available for this image".

    Recently I've noticed my hosts file resetting itself. D:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc (OS installed on D drive) First time it reset it to the default, and now for the first time its completely disappeared after installing a whole bunch of updates. I don't have any virus protection other than Microsoft's Security Essentials. What's going on???

    I have a windows 7,32 bit laptop.   • How to remove iso 9660 from USB?

    I have somehow managed to write an iso 9660 image onto my USB drive, which makes all my computer think that the device is actually a CD. I have tried various methods of removing this partition, but nothing seems to work. I have tried fdisk, which says $ fdisk -l /dev/sdb Cannot open /dev/sdb parted crashes when I try to use it on this device. I have even tried $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb but it just hangs with no output (either on screen or on disk). However, when I plug the USB in, it does mount, and I can view (but not edit) the files on it. edit: now the result is $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb dd: opening `/dev/sdb': Read-only file system I have also tried re-formatting it on Windows, but it gets to the end of the format process and then says "Couldn't format the drive". How can I remove this partition and get my whole USB drive back to normal again?   • phpmyadmin login should not expire on ubuntu 10.04

    On ubuntu 10.04 the phpmyadmin config is a little bit scattered. I want to set the loginexpiration time to zero, should never expire, this is a secured setup behind a firewall. I think it is 3600 by default but cannot find the setting. Where is it? Edit: I actually changed it in /etc/phpmyadmin/conf.inc.php which seems the recommended place for ubuntu. The other files mentioned below might be overwritten on updates.

Is it something I'm doing, is it working? It is installed, it's given high priority in IIS (do see it visibly present). Any ideas why it isn't logging? Should it log even if not rewriting?

    We have a sever that shares all the printers. The PC's that are running on XP professional get a error message quoting (Connect to Printer). The only way I can find to get around the problem is by restating the printer and as soon is it comes online you can then add it but you have not got long. do you think it could be anything to-do with updates on the sever? the sever system is running Windows Server 2003 any help would be much appreciated.     I started getting errors: coldfusion.server.ServiceFactory$ServiceNotAvailableException: The MailSpool service is not available. This exception is usually caused by service startup failure. Check your server configuration. It started happening after installing newest windows updates. I cannot even access CF administrator. Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise ColdFusion 9.0.1 There is a log after last reboot: pastie.org/9456023
