• Store data in Ruby on Rails without Database

  I have a few data values that I need to store on my rails app and wanted to know if there are any alternatives to creating a database table just to do this simple task. Background: I'm writing some analytics and dashboard tools for my ruby on rails app and i'm hoping to speed up the dashboard by caching results that will never change. Right now I pull all users for the last 30 days, and re arange them so I can see the number of new users per day. It works great but takes quite a long time, in reality I should only need to calculate the most recent day and just store the rest of the array somewhere else. Where is the best way to store this array? Creating a database table seems a bit overkill, and i'm not sure that global variables are the correct answer. Is there a best practice for persisting data like this? If anyone has done anything like this before let me know what you did and how it turned out.

• Java combine parents of two large inheritance chains

  I have two parent classes in a huge project, let's say ClassA and ClassB. Each class has many subclasses, which in turn have many subclasses, which in turn have many subclasses, etc. My task is to "marry" these two "families" so that both inherit from a SINGLE parent. I need to essentially make ClassA and ClassB one class (parent) to both of their combined subclasses (children). ClassA and ClassB both currently implement Serializable. I am currently trying to make both inheritance chains inherit from ClassA, and then copy all functions and data members from ClassB into ClassA. This is tedious, and I think a terrible solution. What would be the CORRECT way to solve this problem?

• How can I call an executable to run on a separate machine within a program on my own machine (win xp

  My objective is to write a program which will call another executable on a separate computer(all with win xp) with parameters determined at run-time, then repeat for several more computers, and then collect the results. In short, I'm working on a grid-computing project. The algorithm itself being used is already coded in FORTRAN, but we are looking for an efficient way to run it on many computers at once. I suppose one way to accomplish this would be to upload a script to each computer and then run said script on each computer, all automatically and dependent on my own parameters. But how can I write a program which will write to, upload, and run a script on a separate computer? I had considered GridGain, but the algorithm is already coded and in a different language, so that is ruled out. My current guess at accomplishing this task is using Expect (wiki/Expect), but I have no knowledge of the tool. Any advice appreciated.

I am creating a web application using zend, here i create an interface from where user-A can send email to more than one user(s) & it works excellent but it slow the execution time because of which user-A wait too much for the "acknowledged response" ( which will show after the emails have sent. ) In Java there are "Threads" by which we can perform that task (send emails) & it does not slow the rest application. • Intent flags to Login page redirect, killing previous Activities

  Basically I have a Service that at some points it will sync with the network in order to check if the token is still valid. if it isn't, it should redirect to the login screen (from the service) and if the user press the back button, it should NOT show the previous Activity but instead exit the app. I'm not asking how to hack onBackPressed, I already know how to do it. I'm asking how to accomplish this using the intent flags. So far I have tried the following: intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP | Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); Using the FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK is mandatory because I'm calling startActivity() from a service (or at least thrown exception told me so), and using FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP cause it was supposed to remove all previous activities from the stack, leaving only the new one. The issue is if I press back, I am still able to go to the previous Activity, which makes me think the combination of both flags are clearing the activities in the NEW task, not in the previous one I might be wrong on the reason, but it doesn't work. It seems that I have the option of putting my file deployment under either <tasks> or <publishers>. Logically I would think it should reside under <publishers> but none of the examples I have seen online work this way. Should deployment happen within in <tasks> or <publishers>?

  I've searched for an exhaustive explanation of the meaning of each event monitored by the perf stat command; I've found a tutorial which explains quite well how to use different the features of the perf tool. However, it doesn't explain the meaning of several events that can be observed (and there are a lot!!). Someone know where is a quite simple and complete documentation about the events listed by the perf list command? In particular, I'm interested in finding out the percentage of cpu used by some application I wrote. Can i measure it directly through cpu-clock or task-clock? What's the meaning of these two events? • INSERT 0..n records into table 'A' based on content of table 'B' in MySql 5

  Using MySql 5, I have a task where I need to update one table based on the contents of another table. For example, I need to add 'A1' to table 'A' if table 'B' contains 'B1'. I need to add 'A2a' and 'A2b' to table 'A' if table 'B' contains 'B2', etc.. In our case, the value in table 'B' we're interested is an enum. Right now I have a stored procedure containing a series of statements like: INSERT INTO A SELECT 'A1' FROM B WHERE B.Value = 'B1'; --Repeat for 'B2' -> 'A2a'; 'B2' -> 'A2b'; 'B3' -> 'A3', etc... Is there a nicer more DRY way of accomplishing this? Edit: There may be values in table 'B' that have no equivalent value for table 'A'.

  I would like to know how a set is implemented in C++. If I were to implement my own set container without using the STL provided container, what would be the best way to go about this task? I understand STL sets are based on the abstract data structure of a binary search tree. So what is the underlying data structure? An array? Also, how does insert() work for a set? How does the set check whether an element already exists in it? I read on wikipedia that another way to implement a set is with a hash table. How would this work?

  Hi All, I am setting up a Continuous Integration server. I have one issue that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the tutorials. I have a ASP.net Web Application that I need to compile and them publish. My Problem is that I seem to be able to compile the app but when I attempt to use a buildPublisher this copies every thing including .svn files & folders and ms CS files. I am using an MSBuild task to compile my source. I tried setting my MSBuild Output Directory to directory but this didn't seem to have any effect. What am I not understanding? Thanks

• Overhead of serving pages - JSPs vs. PHP vs. ASPXs vs. C

  I am interested in writing my own internet ad server. I want to serve billions of impressions with as little hardware possible. Which server-side technologies are best suited for this task? I am asking about the relative overhead of serving my ad pages as either pages rendered by PHP, or Java, or .net, or coding Http responses directly in C and writing some multi-socket IO monster to serve requests (I assume this one wins, but if my assumption is wrong, that would actually be most interesting). Obviously all the most efficient optimizations are done at the algorithm level, but I figure there has got to be some speed differences at the end of the day that makes one method of serving ads better than another. How much overhead does something like apache or IIS introduce? There's got to be a ton of extra junk in there I don't need. At some point I guess this is more a question of which platform/language combo is best suited - please excuse the in-adroitly posed question, hopefully you understand what I am trying to get at.

• Create web page launcher, losing focus

  I have created a php webpage. I now want to create a launcher application in android phone, it simply opens the browser with the url "http://<mywebsite>/m". I use uri intent to launch the browser in onCreate function. public void onCreate(...) { .... startActivity(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, new Uri(http://<mywebsite>/m))); ... } I execute this program in my G1 phone (Cyan Mod 5). However, when I click the "Home" key, and then re-enter my application through Task list, I lose focus for my last started browser, and the screen blank Any suggestion?! Should I need any code in onResume function to re-focus my web!?

• Modifying WPF listbox items container when using groupstyle

  I have a listbox that is grouping the items with a GroupStyle. I would like add a control at the bottom of the stackpanel that holds all of the groups. This additional control needs to be part of the scrolling content so that the user would scroll to the bottom of the list to see the control. If I were using a listbox without the groups, this task would be easy by modifying the ListBox template. However, with the items grouped, the ListBox template seems to only apply on a per group basis. I can modify the GroupStyle.Panel, but that doesn't allow me to add items to that panel. <----- I would like to add a control to this stackpanel

• What's the best way to test MSSQL connection programmatically?

  I need to develop a single routine that will be fired each 5 minutes to check if a list of MSSQL servers (10 to 12) are up and running. I can try to obtain a simple query in each one of the servers but this means that I have to create a table, view or stored procedure in every server, even if I use any already made SP I need to have a registered user in each server too. The servers are not in the same phisical location so having those requirements would be a complex task. Is there a way to simply "ping" from c# one MSSQL server? Thanks in advance!

• Under Windows CE, how can I check which RAM based DLLs are loaded in virtual memory space?

  I have a problem with loading a DLL under Windows Mobile 5.0. I'm pretty confident that this is caused by running out of the application virtual memory (the 32 MB slot of the process, as explained in Windows CE .NET Advanced Memory Management). I'm looking for a way to actually make sure that this is the issue and investigate whether my efforts bring expected results. Do you know of a way to check the contents of the virtual memory application slot? Any applications that can help me with this task?

• How to identify deadlock conditions in a third-party application?

  I am using a third-party application to handle batch CD audio extraction via multiple FireWire attached devices, but the application frequently (though non-deterministically) hangs during the extraction. I suspect that the multithreaded application is deadlocking over some shared resource. The developer, however, suspects the problem lies elsewhere but is not addressing the problem at this time. I would like to be able to do some legwork on my end to a) prove the condition exists and b) ideally point him in the right direction. The problems: while I used to be a programmer, it's been awhile and I need to shake off the dust (last work I did was back in '99 and it was under Solaris, while the application runs under XP). Rather than there being a dearth of information online, there's almost too much to digest. Are there any suggested guides or tutorials that might help me get back up to speed sufficient enough to help identify and/or diagnose the deadlock, or are there tools or approaches that I should study up on to aid me in my task?   Hi I do have three dlls. a.dll - released many years ago b.dll - released not so many years c.dll - released shortly Each one contains the same function - unfortunatelly with different parameters. so I do have the following Methods aMethod(param1) aMethod(param1, param2) aMethod(param1, param2, param3) My Task is to make a new dll (or new dlls) wich is backward compatible. But as far as I've learned from Google there is no possibility to overload methods in a dll. Does any one have a tip how I can solve this problem elegantly? -- Michael
