• Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows 8 - How to partition from Windows

  I plan to install Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows 8, and I'm looking for a CLEAR answer on how to conduct partitioning appropriately. I'm very new to all of this so a thorough explanation with minimal jargon would be great. I have an Acer Aspire M5 x64 with 6G RAM. I think I already figured out how to deal with the fast startup, UEFI and SecureBoot issues (I disabled fast startup and disabled Secure Boot). I am able to boot into Ubuntu from a LiveUSB, and I think I am ready to install Ubuntu. Note - despite some advice found here, I do have to disable SecureBoot to boot 13.04 from my LiveUSB. From what I have read here, it seems that I should (at least at first) create the partitions from WITHIN Windows 8, not from the LiveUSB, to avoid reported problems. I have run compmgmt.msc and I see the existing partitions. I see the following: Disk 0: 400 MB Recovery; 300 MB EFI System; Acer (C:) 444.95 GB (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition); 20 GB Recovery Disk 1: 3.74 GB Primary Partition; 14.90 GB Primary Partition I gather I need to create a mounting point '/' Partition (??), a swap partition, and a home partition. Please explain what these are, how big they should be, how I create them from Windows Disk Management, and anything else I need to know. Eventually, I plan to fully replace Windows 8 with Ubuntu, but for now I want to run alongside Windows 8 and not screw things up. I don't have any critical files saved on this computer yet. Thanks.

• WPF DataGrid using a DataGridTemplateColumn rather than a DataGridComboBoxColumn to show selected value at load

  My problem was that using a DataGridComboBoxColumn I couldn’t get it to show the selected value when the DataGrid loaded.  Instead, the user would have to click in the cells and like magic, the current selected values would appear and it looked the way I wanted it to on load. • Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

  Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime. • Parsing mathematical experssions with two values that have parenthesis and minus signs

  I'm trying to parse equations like these which only has two values or the square root of a certain value from a text file: 100+100 -100-100 -(100)+(-100) sqrt(100) by the minues signs, parenthesis and the operator symbol in the middle and the square root, and I have no idea how to start off... Any kind help?

  I have multiple entities like Hotels, Destination Cities etc which can contain images. The way I have my system setup right now is, I think of all the images belonging to this universal set (a table in the DB contains filePaths to all the images). When I have to add an image to an entity, I see if the entity exists in this universal set of images. If it exists, attach the reference to this image, else create a new image. E.g.: class ImageEntityHibernateDAO { public void addImageToEntity(IContainImage entity, String filePath, String title, String altText) { ImageEntity image = this.getImage(filePath); if (image == null) image = new ImageEntity(filePath, title, altText); getSession().beginTransaction(); entity.getImages().add(image); getSession().getTransaction().commit(); } } My question is: Earlier I had to write this code for each entity (and each entity would have a Set collection). So, instead of re-writing the same code, I created the following interface: public interface IContainImage { Set<ImageEntity> getImages(); } Entities which have image collections also implements IContainImage interface. Now, for any entity that needs to support adding Image functionality, all I have to invoke from the DAO looks something like this: // in DestinationDAO::addImageToDestination { imageDao.addImageToEntity(destination, imageFileName, imageTitle, imageAltText); // in HotelDAO::addImageToHotel { imageDao.addImageToEntity(hotel, imageFileName, imageTitle, imageAltText); It'd be great help if someone can provide me some critique on this design ? • Why doesn't it seem to be any development in the field of 3D VR gear, especially with regard to gaming?

  I remember that way back around 1995, there was this big craze with VR in the media, a whole bunch of (mostly mediocre) games labeled as "virtual-reality-interactive-movie (...)" were published. If I recall correctly, the first 3D VR helmet was called VFX-1 and was sold bundled with Descent and some dedicated joystick. I never owned one, and I read just one review which was mostly enthusiastic, but pointed to some weak points, like the eyes getting tired after an hour or so of playing. Then the whole thing basically flickered down and died. I suppose the main reason it wasn't successful was that the hardware of the day was not powerful enough, the VR gear's design wasn't perfected to make it comfortable and natural to use, and the companies that made it failed to market it successfully. What I can't understand is why isn't there any development in the field today. There is some vr-ish hardware mostly targeted at the consoles (Kinect, Wii remote, TrackIR), but all projects of creating some 3d head-mounted display system seem to be in early infancy, appear once in a trade show somewhere and aren't heard of again. I think it could work great with head tracking and some of today's shooters, flight sims (trackIR is nice but the movement scale translation is awkward) and other games with an FPP POV. Is there any technological reason why decent vr headgear can't be made today, or is it just that nobody really cares/everyone is scared to repeat the '90s failure?

• Problems executing check_mysql plugin

  I'm attempting to test out the check_mysql plugin for Nagios using the command line. It works great when I'm just checking localhost but when I try to specify a different server (using the -H argument) I keep getting the following error message: CRITICAL - Unable to connect to mysql://nagios_user@{remoteServerHostname}/ - Access denied for user 'nagios_user'@'{localServerHostName}' (using password: YES) It looks like it's trying to connect to the database using the localhost server even though I've specified a different host name. I've already set up this user on the remote database and they have correct permissions. I'm just trying to figure out why the script keeps inserting the localhost server name instead of the remote one.

• Does the term "Learning Curve" include the knowing of the gotchas?

  When you learn new technology you spend time understanding its concepts and tools. But when technology meets real life strange and not pleasant things happen. Reuqirements are often far from ideal and differ from 'classic' scenario. And soon I find myself bending the technology to my real needs. At this point I begin to know bugs of the system or that is is not so flexible as it seemed at the very begining. And this 'fighting' with technology consumes a great part of the time while developing. What is more depressing is that the bunch of such gotchas and workarounds are not concentrated at one place (book, site, etc.) And before you really confront it you cannot really ask the correct question because you do not even suspect the reason for the problem to occur (unknown-unknown). So my question consiststs of three: 1) Do you really manage (and how) to predict possible future problems? 2) How much time do you spend for finding the workaround/fix/solution before you leave it and switch to other problems. 3) What are the criteria for you to think about yourself as experienced in the tecnology. Do you take these gotchas into account?

• Consolidating Contacts from Multiple Services

  I'm looking for a good way to consolidate my many email/messenger contacts through my different accounts and services. I'd like to have all my contacts in one place, or have them sync between all my different services so they are the same everywhere. If possible, it should support Live Mail/Messenger, Google Contacts, and mobile syncing. Windows Live Mail is great for accessing all your mail accounts, but the contacts viewer only works for contacts affiliated with that Live account. I could go for the contacts folder built into Vista and above, but Live messenger doesn't access that so I would have a separate set of contacts for my IM account. Is there software, or an online service, that can do this? If this is asking to much, is there a proper solution to Live/Google Contacts bidirectional sync?

  I have been following verification and validation questions here with my colleagues, yet we are unable to see the slight differences, probably caused by language barrier in technical English. An example: Requirement specification User wants to control the lights in 4 rooms by remote command sent from the UI for each room separately. Functional specification The UI will contain 4 checkboxes labelled according to rooms they control. When a checkbox is checked, the signal is sent to corresponding light. A green dot appears next to the checkbox When a checkbox is unchecked, the signal (turn off) is sent to corresponding light. A red dot appears next to the checkbox. Let me start with what I learned here: Verification, according to many great answers here, ensures that product reflects specified requirements - as functional spec is done by a producer based on requirements from customer, this one will be verified for completeness, correctness). Then design document will be checked against functional spec (it should design 4 checkboxes..), and the source code against design (is there a code for 4 checkboxes, functions to send the signals etc. - is it traceable to requirements). Okay, product is built and we need to test it, validate. Here comes our understanding trouble - validation should ensure the product meets requirements for its specific intended use which is basically business requirement (does it work? can I control the lights from the UI?) but testers will definitely work with the functional spec, making sure the checkboxes are there, working, labelled, etc. They are basically checking whether the requirements in functional spec were met in the final product, isn't that verification? (should not be, lets stick to ISO 12207 that only validation is the actual testing)

• TechEd 2010 Day Four: Learning how to help others learn

  I do quite a few presentations, and teach at the University of Washington, and also teach other classes. But I'm always learning from others how to help others learn. At events like TechEd I have access to some of the best speakers around, so I try to find out what they do that works. I attended a great session by allen White, in which he demonstrated a set of PowerShell scripts. He said that Dan Jones of the Microsoft Manageability team told him while he demonstrated a script he needed to provide some visual way to represent the process. Allen used one of the oldest visualizations around - a flowchart. It was the first time I'd seen one used to illustrate a PowerShell script, and it was very effective. I'm totally stealing the idea. All of us are teachers - we help others on our team understand what we're up to. Make sure you make notes for what you find effective in dealing with you, and then meld that into your own way of teaching. • The Start of a Blog

  So, here's my new blog up and running, who am I and what am I planning to write here?First off - here's a little about me:I'm a recent graduate from university (coming up to a year ago since I finished) studying Software Engineering on a four year course where the third year was an industrial placement. During the industrial placement I went to work for a company called Adfero in a "Technical Consultant" role as well as a junior "Information Systems Developer". Once I completed my placement I went back to complete my final year but also continued in my developer role 2/3 days a week with the company.Working part time while at uni always seems like a great idea until you get half way through the year. For me the problem was not so much having a lack of time, but rather a lack of interest in the course content having got a chance at working on real projects in a live environment. Most people who have been graduated a little while also find this - when looking back at uni work, it seem to be much more trivial from a problem solving point of view which I found to be true and I found key to uni work to actually be your ability to prove though how you talk about something that you comprehensively understand the basics.After completing uni I then returned full time to Adfero purely in the developer role which is where I've now been for almost a year and have now also taken on the title of "Information Systems Architect" where I'm working on some of the more high level design problems within the products.What I'm wanting to share on this blog is some of the interesting things I've learnt myself over the last year, the things they don't teach you in uni and pretty much anything else I find interesting! My personal favorite areas are text indexing, search and particularly good software engineering design - good design combined with good code makes the first step towards a well-written, maintainable piece of software.Hopefully I'll also be able to share a few of the products I've worked on, the mistake I've made and the software problems I've inherited from previous developers and had to heavily re-factor.

• Oracle ADF and Simplified UI Apps: I18n Feng Shui on Display

  I demoed the Hebrew language version of Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 live in Israel recently. The crowd was yet again wowed by the simplified UI (SUI). I’ve now spent some time playing around with most of the 23 language versions, or the NLS (Natural Language Support) versions as we’d call them, available in Release 8. Hebrew Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 The simplified UI is built using 100% Oracle ADF. This framework is a great solution for developers to productively build tablet-first, mobility-driven apps for users who work and live using natural languages other than English. Oracle ADF’s internationalization (i18n) relies on built-in Java and Unicode,  packing in i18n goodness such as Bi-Di (or bi-directional) flipping of pages, locale-enabled resource bundles, date and time support, and so on. Comparing German (left) and Hebrew Bi-Di (right) page components in the simplified UI. Note the change in the direction of the arrows and positions of the text. So, developers who need to build global apps don’t have to do anything special when using Oracle ADF components, all thanks to the baked-in UX Feng Shui, as Grant Ronald of the ADF team would say to the UK Oracle User Group. • Port forwarding on D-Link DIR-615 super-slow, useless

  Hello I have replaced my old router with DIR-615 from D-Link, and now the port forwarding is so slow it makes the router practically useless. Accessing the router itself (admin UI) is without issues, no delay whatsoever. But when I try to access a service on another computer in the network the requests take minutes and minutes. (E.g. I can see source of my GWT-app main page, but loading additional CSS and JS files takes years.) If anyone could recommend any further diagnostics I should do to figure out what is happening it would be great. Few notes: happens with more services (web-app on Tomcat, viewing directory index via Apache) it does not make a difference whether the service is hosted on wired or wireless PC accessing the service on a localhost works fine turning off firewall on the target PC does not make difference either (makes sense) when I replace this router with the old one (both 192.168.1.1) everything works fine I see nothing suspicious in the router's log I believe I have the latest firmware (4.11) DIR-615 sucks, it already died once completely Regards Jarda Z.

  I’m still new to java and android programming and I am having so much trouble Removing an object when collision happens. I looked around the web and found that I should never handle removing BOX2D bodies during collision detection (a contact listener) and I should add my objects to an arraylist and set a variable in the User Data section of the body to delete or not and handle the removing action in an update handler. So I did this: First I define two ArrayLists one for the faces and one for the bodies: ArrayList<Sprite> myFaces = new ArrayList<Sprite>(); ArrayList<Body> myBodies = new ArrayList<Body>(); Then when I create a face and connect that face to its body I add them to their ArrayLists like this: face = new AnimatedSprite(pX, pY, pWidth, pHeight, this.mBoxFaceTextureRegion); Body BoxBody = PhysicsFactory.createBoxBody(mPhysicsWorld, face, BodyType.DynamicBody, objectFixtureDef); mPhysicsWorld.registerPhysicsConnector(new PhysicsConnector(face, BoxBody, true, true)); myFaces.add(face); myBodies.add(BoxBody); now I add a contact listener and an update handler in the onloadscene like this: this.mPhysicsWorld.setContactListener(new ContactListener() { private AnimatedSprite face2; @Override public void beginContact(final Contact pContact) { } @Override public void endContact(final Contact pContact) { } @Override public void preSolve(Contact contact,Manifold oldManifold) { } @Override public void postSolve(Contact contact,ContactImpulse impulse) { } }); scene.registerUpdateHandler(new IUpdateHandler() { @Override public void reset() { } @Override public void onUpdate(final float pSecondsElapsed) { } }); My plan is to detect which two bodies collided in the contact listener by checking a variable from the user data section of the body, get their numbers in the array list and finally use the update handler to remove these bodies. The questions are: Am I using the arraylist correctly? How to add a variable to the User Data (the code please). I tried removing a body in this update handler but it still throws me NullPointerException , so what is the right way to add an update handler and where should I add it. Any other advices to do this would be great. Thanks in advance.

• How to keep Varnish cached populate after backend down for an extended period?

  We have Varnish 3.0.2 running on Amazon's Linux and it works great. We have a ttl of 48 hours for most content pages and much longer for images, PDFs etc. This weekend we've taken the backend down for some maintenance, so I upped the ttl to 5 days earlier in the week. I had assumed that anything in cache would continue to be served for up to 5 days, but much to our disappointment we checked varnishstat this morning and the cache was almost completely empty and varnish was serving "page not found" messages. I know that this is not what Varnish is designed to do, but why would it reset its cache when the backend is down? And how can I prevent it for next time?

  I have this simple AppleScript which takes the text in the clipboard and outputs the amount of words and characters used. What I'm trying to do is passing "display dialog" to Growl or growlnotify. I know how to use growlnotify in the shell - it's great and highly customizable (stick note, assign app icon or an image, etc) - but the point is: I don't know how to do it in AppleScript. I google a bit but now time has passed and I decided to post my question here. • How to get feedback from the community on large chunks of code?

  Code Review.SE is great when you need feedback on a precise, short piece of code. But where to get similar feedback about the code itself when: you have thousands of LOC, don't have colleagues in your workplace ready or willing to review the code¹, don't have thousands of dollars to spend for a professional review by a third party developer?² Places like CodePlex are a good idea to get your project known³, but from what I've seen, the feedback you get on known projects are consumer feedback, i.e. concerns the bugs and feature requests, not the quality of the source code itself. What are the social way to get the community involved in the code review of the codebase of a certain size for an open source project which doesn't have the scale of Firefox or similar products? ¹ Which is the case for most personal and open source projects, or projects done in companies where the practice of regular and complete code review is nonexistent. ² Which is, again, the case for most personal and open source projects. ³ Even if too many projects published on CodePlex never get known, either because nobody cares or because they are presented not very well.

  JEOS stands for Just Enough Operating System.  It is  great environment for building virtual machines without all the clutter of a windowing system, games, office products, etc.  It is from Ubuntu and you install it using the Ubuntu server install, but rather than picking a standard install, press F4 and choose “Install a minimal system.” Note: The “Install a minimal virtual machine” is specific to VMWare and I plan to use VirtualBox. Be sure to include Open SSH in the install so that it installs sshd. *** Also, if you plan to install XE, you’ll need to modify the partitions to have a larger swap space (at least 1.5 G). *** Once the install is done, I find it useful to install a few other items. Update Ubuntu apt-get update Install some other tools apt-get openjdk-6-jre Yes, java will be included in any of the WebLogic installs, but I need this one if I want to do remote display (for config wizards, etc). apt-get gcc Some apps require to rebuild the kernel modules, so you’ll need a basic compiler. Install guest additions (Choose the VirtualBox Devices->Install Guest Additions…” option.  This sets up a /dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrom1.  You’ll need to manually mount this temporarily: sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt Then run the linux .bin file. Update nofile limits.  Most java apps fail with the standard ubuntu settings: edit /etc/security/limits.conf and add these lines at the end: *     soft nofile 65535 *     hard nofile 65535 root  soft nofile 65535 root  hard nofile 65535 These numbers are very high and I wouldn’t do this on a production system, but for this environment it is fin. To get rid of the annoying piix error on boot, add the following line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file blacklist i2c_piix4

• Enable live streaming on website

  I have a server colocated in a datacentre (dedicated 1Gbit line, SSDs, etc.) running CentOS 5.4 64-bit. I want to stream live video from a device (webcam, camcorder, whatever.) to my server which inturn can re-broadcast it on demand through a flash player (such as Flowplayer) so that more users will be able to watch the stream since the server is quite fast. Does a solution like this exist already (streaming software from live source to flash media server) or will I need to hire someone to code it? I see that VLC has an option to stream video.. will that be suitable in this case? Or is there a better way to do it? I don't want a browser based solution on my end. It'll be great if this can be done without running an X server but I don't mind either way. This will be running on a dedicated PC at home.

  I'm currently using Oddmuse wiki to document thing, both personal and work related. What I'd like to do is to find an android app along with a wiki engine which enables me to read and make changes to the wiki with my phone. Using only the browser is unintuitive and hard to use. Does anyone else do this? I'd rather use mediawiki or dokuwiki, but I don't knlw of any apps which can both display and let me log in to edit the wiki. Any tips would be great!

• Bizarre SSH Problem - It won't even start

  I recently got Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, got it up and running with some MediaWiki software, static IP on the box and router and was able to access the main page even from a cell phone. Everything seemed great... Then I wanted to finally get rid of the monitor and keyboard and login remotely via SSH. I installed openssh-server, let everything point to port 22 for a test run and installed putty on my Windows XP machine. I got a connection refused. Went back and started checking the Ubuntu install itself... (I'm under root from this point on) $ sudo -s $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting $ service ssh start ssh start/running, process 2212 $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting Apparently ssh has stopped or is waiting for something.... $ ssh localhost ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused I can't even connect to myself... I checked ufw (firewall) to see if port 22 is doing alright... $ sudo ufw status Status: active To Action From 22 ALLOW Anywhere 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere 22 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere (v6) sshd_config shows only Port 22 Is ssh not using the right IP address at all? I just don't get what I did wrong here. When this is up and running I will def change the port number, but for now, I don't want to mess with the default install too much until a test run with putty is successful. Edit: Here are my sshd_config file and my ssh_config file. The command /usr/sbin/sshd -p 22 -D -d -e returns: /etc/ssh/sshd_config line 159: Subsystem 'sftp' already defined. Edit: @phoibus moving the sshd_config file and reinstalling did the trick! service ssh status the above command shows that ssh is now running and I am now able to log in from my windows xp computer remotely via putty. Thanks so much! I can now use my monitor for other things!

• How to get Wifi Working Properly - I am Noob

  I'm a noob to Ubuntu, but not computers. I installed a full version of Ubuntu version 12 whatever it is. I run it on a machine that has Win7/Win8 on another hard drive. My wireless adapter is some tiny USB stick I got on eBay - it works great in Windows, but I can't get it to work in Ubuntu. More precisely, Ubuntu is providing me a list (sometimes) of wireless networks in the area and when I try to connect to mine it just keeps password prompting me even though the one I use is correct. I looked over all the settings multiple times and don't believe there is anything in error regarding what it takes to connect to my network. So, I thought maybe it is a driver issue and came across NDIS. I thought I should try installing it, but I don't know how when I can't connect the Ubuntu machine to the Internet. I tried some commands to no avail. I have the Ubuntu installation disc and it shows a NDIS common and utils .deb files in there. Can someone out there help me out to get this wireless setup so I can get online?
