• How can I change my "Desktop bar"?

  The problem: In Gnome 3.4 when I click the main menu, it's white. The text of the menu is also white. Original text: I have a problem. When I installed the new version of Gnome (3.4) the "Desktop bar" (I'm sorry, I don't know what's the real name of that bar, but is the bar on the top on Ubuntu 11.10) every time I click on the username icon, or the battery, etc., the menu comes on gray or white and the letters are white. I know maybe this is a stupid question but it annoys me. Besides, my username doest not appear on the login screen. I tried to reset my settings, I delete gnome, and check the Unsettings and CompizConfig but the problem is still there. Maybe I miss something on the process of looking on any configuration tool but I don't think so... Sorry if the question is something basic or even stupid but I'm new on Ubuntu and I'm experimenting whit it.

• Which other "photo booth" program can I use besides cheese (on a Toshiba AC100)?

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba AC100 several days ago, as described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/TEGRA/AC100, and seeing during the installation that the OS was able to use the camera (the installer suggested to make a photo for the first user), I wanted to play with the camera. I couldn't understand how to find a "photo booth" program in the new-style menu+desktop (not the classical menu with sections), so I remembered the popular "cheese" Linux program, and installed it via the Software Update tool (or whatever it is called; can be invoked from the panel on the desktop). But cheese doesn't start, i.e., it crashes. (The bug report telling the same.) As I said, the camera could be used by the OS on this machine -- this could be seen in the installer. Which "photo booth" programs can be installed and used without crashes in Ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba AC100 in order to play with the webcamera?

  I need a scenario for a small dialog-based game / interactive story. The game would be used as an example for a middleware tool we're developing. I would like to buy an existing story (it should be dynamic of course — with branching dialogs etc.), or hire someone to write a new one. Please advise, where to go to find such person / service? We're based in Russia, so getting a talented enough native English writer locally is a bit of a problem. Update: To be extra clear: We must get all necessary rights to reuse the story and make a derived work (i.e. the game we're talking about) from it. This is a commercial product. Borrowing someone else's work at random and using it just not going to work.

• Ubuntu 14.04 Unity not functioning, no launcher

  Yesterday I turned my computer to find that the launcher was missing. In addition, I could not using ctrl-alt-t would bring up a blank white screen. The only terminal could be found by clicking ctrl-alt-f1. I used ccsm to turn on Unity. Unity panel service was working. I installed tweak tool. I did all the troubleshooting I could find related to this subject. Nothing would work. I ultimately reinstalled Ubuntu 13.10. Also, I do not have an nvidia graphics card. I have an intel integrated graphics controller. I have also tried using "Gnome Tweak Tool" using icon themes. But that also does not worked properly (Though I can change folder icons , dash menu icons but not file icons). • I've changed my URL schema. How do I tell Google to index the new schema and forget the old one?

  I had a site where the urls were constructed like this /index.php/Topic /index.php/AnotherTopic These were indexed in google, and search results returned that pointed to these. However, I've recently replatformed that site, and reconfigured it so the above urls would be: /index.php?title=Topic /index.php?title=AnotherTopic The original urls are returning 404s. The site is linking to the correct URL schema internally, but Google is retaining the original schema in its search results. I've updated and resubmitted the sitemap which only contains the new schema. Also, Google's webmasters tool is going slightly bananas at the fact there's now a spike in 404 errors in its crawl results. What would be the best approach to get Google to 'forget' about the old schema, and instead index the new schema? Should I try blocking /index.php/ in robots.txt? Should I be returning 301 codes instead of 404 for the original urls?

  I'm writing an app that does something like a custom number (licence) place generator tool where if I ask for the plate "robin" it will suggest I try: r0bin rob1n r0b1n Are there any published algorithms which can do this? It has to be able to handle replacing single letters with multiples, e.g. m with rn and vise-versa and not fall over if it replaces an i with an l then comes to check the l and replaces it back to an i. The list of what gets swapped with what is going to be user input but I'm not expecting a huge list, possibly 10 pairs at most. I'll be implementing this in Ruby or Python but I should be able to convert code from any other language.

• After 12.10, no GUI can authenticate for administration, such as Software Center

  I upgraded to 12.10, and now I can't use Software Center or Network Administration. It keeps giving me an authentication errors.   Many years ago we purchased a domain from Yahoo. Now our website is hosted on Amazon EC2. The output of an SPF checking tool (http://www.kitterman.com/getspf2.py) says SPF records are primarily published in DNS as TXT records. The TXT records found for your domain are: i=182&m=bizmail-mx2-p9 SPF records should also be published in DNS as type SPF records. No type SPF records found. Checking to see if there is a valid SPF record. No valid SPF record found of either type TXT or type SPF. Where do I get access to these values? Can somebody speculate, where can I find an interface, or a configuration file to fill in the missing fields?

• Unable to start GRUB2 on Triple boot Macbook Pro with OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Ubuntu

  I installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp. Then I created a partition from the empty space in the Windows partition and another 4GB partition for the linux swap using GParted. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the the newly created partition from the Windows partition. Now GRUB2 does not load and I can only see the blinking cursor on the top right when selecting "Windows HD" from the 'option' key at the start up. OS X works fine but nothing else.   I want to update my sources.list file with the fastest server from the command line in a fresh Ubuntu Server install. I know this is trivially easy with the GUI, but there doesn't seem to be a simple way to do it from from the command line? There are two different working answers to this question below: Use apt-get's mirror: method This method asks the Ubuntu server for a list of mirrors near you based on your IP, and selects one of them. The easiest alternative, with the minor downside that sometimes the closest mirror may not be the fastest. Command-line foo using netselect Shows you how to use the netselect tool to find the fastest recently updated servers from you -- network-wise, not geographically. Use sed to replace mirrors in sources.list. The other answers, including the accepted answer, are no longer valid (for Ubuntu 11.04 and newer) because they recommended Debian packages such as netselect-apt and apt-spy which do not work with Ubuntu. • How can I restore a country specific apt-get update mirror?

  While configuring my new 13.10 installation, I chose to change the default update server using the "Software & Updates" GUI tool available in the System settings panel. Before this change the selected update server was "Server for Italy" (I live there). Now it's one of the mirrors available in the list of mirrors (one of italian ones). How is "Server for COUNTRY" chosen in the list of mirrors for a country? How can I restore the "Server for Italy" option? Is it advisable to do so? I want to revert that setting because I found that the selected mirror is not up to date (checked from Here).

  It is a good practice to leave comments in your code.  Knowing what the hell you were thinking or later intending can be salvation for yourself or the poor soul coming behind you.  Comments can leave clues to why you chose one approach over the other.  Perhaps staged re-engineering dictated that coding practices vary.One thing that should not be left in code as comments is old code.  There are many free tools that left you version your code.  Subversion is a great tool when used with TortoiseSVN.  Leaving commented code scattered all over will cause you to second guess yourself, all distraction to the real code, and is just bad practice.If you have a versioning solution, take time to go back through your code and clean things up.  You may find that you can remove lines and leave real comments that are far more knowledgeable than having to remember why you commented out the old code in the first place.
