• SEOs: mobile version using AJAX: how to be properly read by SEOs?

  Before anything else, I'd like to emphasize that I've already read this and this. Here's what I can do: Choice (1): create classical Web version with all products in that page - http://www.myweb.com. create mobile Web version with all products in the page and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely. But this may be long to (load + format), and may provide bad user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Choice (2): create classical Web version with all products in that page create mobile Web version with almost nothing but a Web page showing "wait", then download all products in the page using AJAX and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely. Showing a "wait, loading" message gives far more time to do whatever I want and may provide better user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Question: if I choose solution (2), google won't read anything on the mobile version (because all products will be downloaded in the page using AJAX), so it wont be properly read by SEOs. What / how shall I do?

• Opinion on LastPass's security for the Average Joe [closed]

  This is borderline on objective/subjective, but I'm posting it here since I'm more interested in objective facts, without going into too much technical details, than I am in user reviews of LastPass. I've always used offline ways for (password / sensitive data) storage, but lately I keep hearing good things about LastPass. Indeed, it is more practical having it always accessible from every computer you're using without syncing and related problems, but the security aspect still troubles me. How (in a nutshell for dummies) does LastPass keep your data secure / can their employees see your data, and what is your opinion for such storage of more than usual keeping of sensitive data (bank PIN codes, some financial / business related stuff and so on - you know, the things that would practically hurt if lost / phished)? What are your opinions of it, and do you trust it for such? Any bad experiences? If someone for example is sniffing your wifi network, would such data be easier than usual to sniff out?

• Typing commands into a terminal always returns "-bash: /usr/bin/python: is a directory"

  I think I messed something up on my Ubuntu server while trying to upgrade to Python 2.7.2. Every time I type in a command that doesn't have a response, the default from bash is this: -bash: /usr/bin/python: is a directory Just like it would say if I typed the name of a directory. But this happens every time I enter a command that doesn't do anything. artur@SERVER:~$ dslkfjdsklfdshjk -bash: /usr/bin/python: is a directory I remember messing with the update-alternatives to point at python at some point, perhaps that could be it? Any inklings as to why this is happening? Related to this problem is also the fact that when I try using easy_install it tells me -bash: /usr/bin/easy_install: /usr/bin/python: bad interpeter: Permission denied /etc/fstab/ is set to exec. I've read that could fix the second problem but it hasn't.

  Implementing remember me with Stripe, while not using their Checkout (not supported on PhoneGap), seems to be fine using the path: First time: Request token on the client side using card info. Create customer on server side using token. Upon confirm, charge customer. Second time: Check if current user is Stripe customer by requesting the info from our server. If is Stripe customer, show "use credit card on file" instead of regular CC form. Upon confirm, charge customer. However, there is one important convenience items missing--last four digits of card number. Most sites inform you of the card you're using before making the payment, pretty important in case you have to switch out cards. I have seen that you can retrieve charges which would allow me to get the last four digits. Is it bad practice to pull that and display it? Are there alternative solutions anyone has in mind?

  i'm on ubuntustudio and i want to format my hd and try kubuntu (install in my acer notebook, no partion, no double operating system problem, only istall it) i've downloaded iso file ( kubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso ), insert usb pen drive, then: system administration startup disk creator erased usb pen content, and "make startup disk" finally, reboot computer with pen inside usb port normal boot didn't start (as expected) but only black screen with this signal: SYSLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright (c) 1994-2010, H. Peter Anvin et al unknown keyword in configuration file boot: i've tried different usb pen stick and different iso files (ubuntu, kubuntu, netbook edition).. always same problem (sometimes only the first line without "unknow keyword in conf file" error) some advice?? sorry for my bad english

• Thousands of 404 errors in Google Webmaster Tools

  Because of a former error in our ASP.Net application, created by my predecessor and undiscovered for a long time, thousands of wrong URLs where created dynamically. The normal user did not notice it, but Google followed these links and crawled itself through these incorrect URLs, creating more and more wrong links. To make it clearer, consider the url example.com/folder should create the link example.com/folder/subfolder but was creating example.com/subfolder instead. Because of bad url rewriting, this was accepted and by default showed the index page for any unknown url, creating more and more links like this. example.com/subfolder/subfolder/.... The problem is resolved by now, but now I have thousands of 404 errors listed in the Google Webmaster Tools, which got discovered 1 or 2 years ago, and more keep coming up. Unfortunately the links do not follow a common pattern that I could deny for crawling in the robots.txt. Is there anything I can do to stop google from trying out those very old links and remove the already listed 404s from Webmaster Tools?

• DBCC CHECKDB (BatmanDb, REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS) &ndash; Are you Feeling Lucky?

  I’m currently working for a client on a PowerBuilder to WPF migration.  It’s one of those “I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you” kind of clients and the quick-lime pits are currently occupied by the EMC tech…but I’ve said too much already. At approximately 3 or 4 pm that day users of the Batman[1] application here in Gotham[1] started to experience problems accessing the application.  Batman[2] is a document management system here that also integrates with the ERP system.  Very little goes on here that doesn’t involve Batman in some way.  The errors being received seemed to point to network issues (TCP protocol error, connection forcibly closed by the remote host etc…) but the real issue was much more insidious. Connecting to the database via SSMS and performing selects on certain tables underlying the application areas that were having problems started to reveal the issue.  You couldn’t do a SELECT * FROM MyTable without it bombing and giving the same error noted above.  A run of DBCC CHECKDB revealed 14 tables with corruption.  One of the tables with issues was the Document table.  Pretty central to a “document management” system.  Information was obtained from IT that a single drive in the SAN went bad in the night.  A new drive was in place and was working fine.  The partition that held the Batman database is configured for RAID Level 5 so a single drive failure shouldn’t have caused any trouble and yet, the database is corrupted.  They do hourly incremental backups here so the first thing done was to try a restore.  A restore of the most recent backup failed so they worked backwards until they hit a good point.  This successful restore was for a backup at 3AM – a full day behind.  This time also roughly corresponds with the time the SAN started to report the drive failure.  The plot thickens… I got my hands on the output from DBCC CHECKDB and noticed a pattern.  What’s sad is that nobody that should have noticed the pattern in the DBCC output did notice.  There was a rush to do things to try and recover the data before anybody really understood what was wrong with it in the first place.  Cooler heads must prevail in these circumstances and some investigation should be done and a plan of action laid out or you could end up making things worse[3].  DBCC CHECKDB also told us that: repair_allow_data_loss is the minimum repair level for the errors found by DBCC CHECKDB Yikes.  That means that the database is so messed up that you’re definitely going to lose some stuff when you repair it to get it back to a consistent state.  All the more reason to do a little more investigation into the problem.  Rescuing this database is preferable to having to export all of the data possible from this database into a new one.  This is a fifteen year old application with about seven hundred tables.  There are TRIGGERS everywhere not to mention the referential integrity constraints to deal with.  Only fourteen of the tables have an issue.  We have a good backup that is missing the last 24 hours of business which means we could have a “do-over” of yesterday but that’s not a very palatable option either. All of the affected tables had TEXT columns and all of the errors were about LOB data types and orphaned off-row data which basically means TEXT, IMAGE or NTEXT columns.  If we did a SELECT on an affected table and excluded those columns, we got all of the rows.  We exported that data into a separate database.  Things are looking up.  Working on a copy of the production database we then ran DBCC CHECKDB with REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS and that “fixed” everything up.   The allow data loss option will delete the bad rows.  This isn’t too horrible as we have all of those rows minus the text fields from out earlier export.  Now I could LEFT JOIN to the exported data to find the missing rows and INSERT them minus the TEXT column data. We had the restored data from the good 3AM backup that we could now JOIN to and, with fingers crossed, recover the missing TEXT column information.  We got lucky in that all of the affected rows were old and in the end we didn’t lose anything.  :O  All of the row counts along the way worked out and it looks like we dodged a major bullet here. We’ve heard back from EMC and it turns out the SAN firmware that they were running here is apparently buggy.  This thing is only a couple of months old.  Grrr…. They dispatched a technician that night to come and update it .  That explains why RAID didn’t save us. All-in-all this could have been a lot worse.  Given the root cause here, they basically won the lottery in not losing anything. • How to build a turn-based multiplayer "real time" server

  I want to build a TCG for mobile devices that is multiplayer over the web (not local wifi or bluetooth). As a player plays cards I want the second player to see what is being played in "real time" (within a few seconds). Only one player can play at a time. Server requirements: 1) Continuously listens for input from Player 1 2) As it receives input from Player 1, sends the message to Player 2 I know some PHP, but it seems like unless I had a loop that continued until I broke it (seems like a bad idea) the script would just receive one input and quit. On the mobile side I know I can open sockets using various frameworks, but what language allows a "stream-like" behavior that continuously listens/sends messages on the server? Or if I'm missing something, what would be the best practice here?

• How do I do TDD on embedded devices?

  I'm not new to programming and I've even worked with some low level C and ASM on AVR, but I really can't get my head around a larger-scale embedded C project. Being degenerated by the Ruby's philosophy of TDD/BDD, I'm unable to understand how people write and test code like this. I'm not saying it's a bad code, I just don't understand how this can work. I wanted to get more into some low level programming, but I really have no idea how to approach this, since it looks like a completely different mindset that I'm used to. I don't have trouble understanding pointer arithmetics, or how allocating memory works, but when I see how complex C/C++ code looks compared to Ruby, it just seems impossibly hard. Since I already ordered myself an Arduino board, I'd love to get more into some low level C and really understand how to do things properly, but it seems like none of the rules of high level languages apply. Is it even possible to do TDD on embedded devices or when developing drivers or things like custom bootloader, etc.?

• Can't extract .tar.xz archive on 13.10 because permission denied

  I used to work with Ubuntu 13.04 and also i have installed Vlc 2.1.0 with a .tar.xz archive on that , but after release of 13.10 , i erased 13.04 and installed 13.10 . so i tried to install vlc 2.1.0 with the normal PPA (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install vlc browser-plugin-vlc ) way but it installed vlc 2.0.9 for me , so i 'm remove that and tried to install with the way i have installed it before on 13.04 (wget -c download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/2.1.0/vlc-2.1.0.tar.xz tar -xJvf download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/2.1.0/vlc-2.1.0.tar.xz cd vlc-2.1.0 sudo apt-get build-dep vlc ./configure make sudo make install) , but suddenly an error disturbed me in extracting the .tar.xz file : "Error setting owner : Operation not permitted" , but i the owner of file is me and i changed the all owner settings in file properties to read and write but it don't works ,so what can i do ? and also if it don't work , suggest me a good way to install Vlc 2.1.0 ! (Thanks - sorry for my bad English)

• hardy alternate cd customization and ubuntu-keyring-udeb

  I have been trying to customize Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy heron) alternate install cd. I have followed the community documentation at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization#Generating_a_new_ubuntu-keyring_.deb_to_sign_your_CD to rebuild the ubuntu-keyring packages. But when the media boots I get a warning: anna[7581]: WARNING **: bad md5sum. Though I have not been able to confirm that the message is for the ubunu-keyring-udeb package, the nearest debconf Adding [package] message is for ubuntu-keyring-udeb. This is followed by: INPUT critical retriever/cdrom/error. This message is already from syslog. I don't think dpkg.log will help in this case. I have tried modifying the md5sum file within the source package manually and signing it with my own public key, before building it. But that has not helped either. How do get the installer to work in this scenario? Alternatively, can I customize the contents of Ubuntu8.04 without signing anything?

• How do you administer cups remotely using the web interface?

  I have an Ubuntu server in my apartment and I just got a printer, so it's time to share! In the past I've used CUPS on my Desktop and I'd just point the browsers to localhost:631 to set things up. Can I used the web based admin tools remotely? I've been playing with the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file and am currently at the point where I can direct a browser on my LAN to server-ip:631 but I'm getting the 403 Forbidden error. If it's not possible or it's a bad idea for security reasons to allow remote administrator of CUPS, would it be possible to accomplish this using an SSH tunnel to the sever?

  Honestly, I hate the word "Pythonic" -- it's used as a simple synonym of "good" in many circles, and I think that's pretentious. Those who use it are silently saying that good code cannot be written in a language other than Python. Not saying Python is a bad language, but it's certainly not the "end all be all language to solve ALL of everyone's problems forever!" (Because that language does not exist). What it seems like people who use this word really mean is "idiomatic" rather than "Pythonic" -- and of course the word "idiomatic" already exists. Therefore I wonder: Why does the word "Pythonic" exist?

• Collision Detection and Resolution in Three.js

  So at the moment am making a simple game using three.js and three.firstpersonControls.js but with the current Three.js r66, they apparently removed checkWallCollision and then in the r67 firstpersonControls removed support for that collision. SO my question is how would i go about checking collision in 3D using three.js and then resolution to that collision. (Pushing player out of the block) Note I used a 2D array to generate the world so it's only cubes that I have to check collision with.... if this is a bad question or am lacking something please tell me before you -rep me, am just not sure how to do this and google doesn't want to help

• Looking for Windows shared web hosting with PHP support

  I'm looking for Windows based shared web hosting which supports multiple hosted web sites (multiple domains). Supported technologies should contain: ASP.NET 4, ASP.NET MVC IIS 7 MS SQL 2008 PHP, MySQL It is for my hobby projects so it should not be too expensive. I tried GoDaddy's Windows Deluxe hosting but the experience is very bad and I want to move elsewhere. WordPress hosted on GoDaddy's Windows hosting is unloaded every few minutes and next request takes around 20s to complete. Following request to empty site takes around 3s to complete. Even request for RSS wich transfers 1.2KB takes several seconds. The delay happens in PHP processing because static content is served within 200ms. It helped to migrate to Linux hosting (all requests are served under 1s) but Linux hosting is not what I'm looking for.
