All of this, despite her contribution to the team being very substantial. So here's my question: How do you make a real low profile exit from a company? Is something like that even a reality given that a fair number of people will know you in office, not to mention your linkedin and facebook.

  I was reading about this article - SEO preference for WWW or HTTP:// protocol redirection? Do www websites rank better than NON-www? I have same problem but I needed a help on this further. What about https:// How will this be treated? Is the redirect 301 sufficient to solve the problem? I have a SEO company that says if possible, i should not have redirect but I don't think this is visible? Does permanent redirect in any way have effect on SEO services if properly done? • Trying to learn ASP.net

  Hi There, I have a background in computers and had done programming some seven years ago. Switched to becoming a technical writer (oops!). And now think I should jump ship again, back to being a programmer. Of course the natural course of action where I can spend say two whole years learning to code, might not be available any more. I am keen on ASP.net as its the language that most products at my company are written in. I am sure this has been asked before, but here I go... where do I begin? • Have you tried to switch to different kind of language and find a job in a "new language" ?

  I'm a Java programmer(J2EE/JEE), but I'm thinking about switching to C#. Does any of you have been in my position and have switched from Java to C# or C# to Java or C++ to Java, etc. ?? I'm NOT asking about switching between the same kind of languages, for example Java to Groovy/Scala/JRuby, C++ to C, VB to C#, C# to IronRuby/F#/VB.NET. Or if you company was C++, but has moved to Java(you had no choice and I'm about to make a choice). Side question: How hard was it to get a job in a "new language"?

• Would you hire a computer scientist which refuses to use computers? [closed]

  Imagine that you're interviewing a brilliant CS grad. He's just finished school, has very high grades, and has been performing very well on the interview so far. You reach a point near the end, where you're starting to speak about terms of employment, salary, etc.., and you're trying to show off the environment he'll be working in. When you mention that programmers at your company have systems with two monitors, the interviewee stops you and informs you that he won't need a computer. He only ever writes code by hand, in a note-book, and relies on his phone for sending/receiving email. This is not something he's willing to budge on. Would you still hire him? • Need Sql Server Hosting 50GB or More

  Hi I am looking for a Hosting solution (Dedicated or Shared) which will allow me to host a SQL Server database service (Not SQL Express but the Web edition). The size of my database might grow to 50GB or more. The web application will offer more reads than write operations. I also need daily backups and raid 1 storage. Is there a reliable and economical hosting company that would provide this? Additional Question: If there is a easy way to host MS SQL on Amazon EC2 service, it will be preferable.

• Browser support for internal corporate tools

  We are on the verge of a conversion. For years, our company supported only IE for its internal (intranet) home-built tools. Since a few of our users are still on XP, which means IE only goes up to 8... a heavily JS / jQuery site wont even load! We have been in the process of converting to use Chrome instead, to make use of its javascript performance. But, it has now been suggested that we support all common browsers... internally for these tools. Which means more development time to scale-back some of these new applications, more time to test in all browsers, and we are already under staffed. Are there any good informational sites/posts out there, that already make this argument?

• How to delete all your old website data from the internet?

  I had my website on rohbits.com but for some reasons I had to delete it and recreate it with this URL wwww.rohbits.com/blog. My problem is that the old links are still visible on google search and when people click on those links, they land on a 404 Error page of the hosting company. I want to either delete all the previous data from the search engines or have an 404 Error page of my own so that I can tell my visitors where the actual website is. I have already redirected all the traffic which comes to rohbits.com to www.rohbits.com/blog but when they click on the expired links, they get this error page. One sample expired link is this one: http://rohbits.com/wordpress-tricks.

• Lining things up while using columns

  I have a request that may not be possible. I'd like to line up the elements of a form so that the inputs all start at the same place: Name: [ ] Company: [ ] Some question with a long name: [ ] But my list is (somewhat) long and I would like to show them in multiple columns on screens that are wide enough. Ideally, I'd find a POSH method (table-free is semantically appropriate, I think) that works on a reasonable number of browsers. My current page uses a table. I tried CSS with columns: auto; -moz-column-count: auto; -moz-column-width: auto; -webkit-column-count: auto; -webkit-column-width: auto; but Firefox (at least) won't break a table across columns.

• Passing variable from SharePoint to external website

  My company has a SharePoint site that is administered by the IT department (versus the Web Developer... go figure!). We have partnered with a vendor that has built a site for our staff to order customized stationery, etc. I need to create a link on the SharePoint site that will take the user to the external site but identify them individually. The vendor is suggesting this format: https://www.VENDORSITE.com/UI/Profile.hcf?id=a02b8106-4115-47cd-bca7-ce4dd447ef89&username=<user name>&password=<password>&name1=<first name>&name2=<last name>&email=<email> Here's the problem: I don't know how to pass that info, or even a single variable, from the SharePoint site to the external site. I would appreciate ANY suggestions.

  When XNA was released in 2006, I was happy and started doing indie attempts. After 3 years or so, there were lots of forum discussions on prospects of AAA game development in C#, and how a high performance vedio game can easily be programmed in C#. Suddenly after 2-3 more years, these discussions have died down and everybody seems like recommending native C++... What programming language should I practice on for long term? Should I stick with C# or do an extra effort for C++? Will AAA game companies adopt C# as a replacement to C++? Note : I aim to work at a AAA game company.

• How to setup VPN as Proxy

  I have an PerfectPrivacy VPN connected via the OpenVPN-Network-Manger-Plugin (Ubuntu 12.04.1) and I want to assign a system wide proxy over that VPN. I have tried proxydriver that should do that automatically, but it works partially. The browser says that I have the IP of the VPN, but when I tried to send an eMail over SMTP (Port 25), I can´t connect to the mail server. In our company the smtp server port is closed, but that should be not a problem, when I do that over a VPN, shouldn´t it? greetings

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s.   For example: Delete's should have confirms. Confirmations should be green. Prefer list-of-values over free text whenever possible. This was just a sample. I am looking for references that simply and clearly list common 'should do's' in terms of ui, interactions and usability. My company is new to software development and they keep getting suprised by contractors that don't do the obvious so I am looking for good references about the right way to do it and the basic things to always consider (like the above).   I don't understand a lot about game engines and modules for Python, even though I'm aware of the existance of PyGame and Pyglets, so please don't bash me too hard if I'll wrote something wrong in this question :-) When I upgraded my Mac to the latest version of OS X, I noticed for the first time that Apple is providing a library named Sprite kit for developing games on both iOS and OS X. It looks to me fairly complete, and the fact is managed by a big company gives me the impression of being well-supported for the time being; in summary, it looks... cool. Actually in order to take advantage of "Sprite kit" you need to code in Obj-C. Since I don't know Obj-C but only a little bit of Python, do you think that there's a chance that sooner or later someone will make a wrapper for Python ? Thank you very much and best regards
