• What does your Lisp workflow look like?

  I'm learning Lisp at the moment, coming from a language progression that is Locomotive BASIC - Z80 Assembler - Pascal - C - Perl - C# - Ruby. My approach is to simultaneously: write a simple web-scraper using SBCL, QuickLisp, closure-html, and drakma watch the SICP lectures I think this is working well; I'm developing good 'Lisp goggles', in that I can now read Lisp reasonably easily. I'm also getting a feel for how the Lisp ecosystem works, e.g. Quicklisp for dependencies. What I'm really missing, though, is a sense of how a seasoned Lisper actually works. When I'm coding for .NET, I have Visual Studio set up with ReSharper and VisualSVN. I write tests, I implement, I refactor, I commit. Then when I'm done enough of that to complete a story, I write some AUATs. Then I kick off a Release build on TeamCity to push the new functionality out to the customer for testing & hopefully approval. If it's an app that needs an installer, I use either WiX or InnoSetup, obviously building the installer through the CI system. So, my question is: as an experienced Lisper, what does your workflow look like? Do you work mostly in the REPL, or in the editor? How do you do unit tests? Continuous integration? Packaging & deployment? When you sit down at your desk, steaming mug of coffee to one side and a framed photo of John McCarthy to the other, what is it that you do? Currently, I feel like I am getting to grips with Lisp coding, but not Lisp development ...

  Photo by Jennifer Ortiz In his article, It's Time To Occupy IT, AIIM CEO and president John Mancini examines the evolution of "Systems of Engagement," the social technologies that are transforming how customers and employees relate to and interact with companies. Surviving the disruption that transformation entails is a matter of when, rather than if, a given organization embraces the change. But as Mancini points out, that transformation will require a "new breed" of IT professional: "While addressing this kind of challenge requires technical skills, it also requires process and customer acumen more often found in the business than in our IT departments. It requires a new type of information professional, whose expertise includes technical and domain knowledge, but who also has an idea of how the pieces of a process that spans the worlds of Systems of Record and Systems of Engagement should fit together. Gartner estimates that the demand for this new breed of information professional will grow by 50 percent by 2015." Though Mancini makes no reference to the title, the skills he desribes are those of the IT architect. While the specific definition of the role remains fodder for seemingly endless discussion and debate on various social networks and forums, the fact remains that the skills required for success in the evolving world of IT will increasingly involve a deep understanding of how all the pieces fit together.

• Do programmers need a union? [closed]

  In light of the acrid responses to the intellectual property clause discussed in my previous question, I have to ask: why don't we have a programmers' union? There are many issues we face as employees, and we have very little ability to organize and negotiate. Could we band together with the writers', directors', or musicians' guilds, or are our needs unique? Has anyone ever tried to start one? If so, why did it fail? (Or, alternatively, why have I never heard of it, despite its success?) later: Keith has my idea basically right. I would also imagine the union being involved in many other topics, including: legal liability for others' use/misuse of our work, especially unintended uses evaluating the quality of computer science and software engineering higher education programs -- unlike many other engineering disciplines, we are not required to be certified on receiving our Bachelor's degrees evangelism and outreach -- especially to elementary school students certification -- not doing it, but working with the companies like ISC(2) and others to make certifications meaningful and useful continuing education -- similar to previous conferences -- maintain a go-to list of organizers and other resources our members can use I would see it less so as a traditional trade union, with little emphasis on: pay -- we tend to command fairly good salaries outsourcing and free trade -- most of use tend to be pretty free-market oriented working conditions -- we're the only industry with Aeron chairs being considered anything like "standard"

• A Panorama of JavaOne Latin America

  As you know, JavaOne Latin America 2012 was held at the Transamerica Expo Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil on December 4-6. It was a resounding success with a great vibe, excellent technical content and numerous world class speakers, both local and international. Various folks like Tori Wieldt, Steve Chin, Arun Gupta, Bruno Borges and myself looked at the conference from slightly different colored lenses. It's interesting to put them all together in a panoramatic collage: Tori wrote about the Sao Paulo Geek Bike Ride held the Saturday before the conference here (enjoy the photos and video). She also discusses the keynotes in great detail here. Steve looked at it from the viewpoint of someome instrumental to putting the event together. • Include Binary Files in DEB package

  I need to build a DEB package from mainly Node.js Javascript files, but it should include some binary files as well. They are listed inside debian/source/include-binaries. Otherwise I get the error message dpkg-source: error: unrepresentable changes to source The command in question is: bzr builddeb -- -us -uc After adding the file include-binaries, when running bzr builddeb -- -us -uc again, now I get a different error: It says dpkg-source: error: aborting due to unexpected upstream changes, see /tmp/mailadmin_0.0-1.diff.n6m5_6 I have no idea how to get rid of this. In the next line of output it tells me dpkg-source: info: you can integrate the local changes with dpkg-source --commit But if I run this command in the build area of my package, it gives me the unrepresentable changes to source error message again, even though debian/source/include-binaries is present in the build area as well. I am missing the way out of this... I tried deleting all files that are produced by the build process, still no success. Further details: The target directory is /opt/mailadmin. Since this directory is unusual, I listed it in the file debian/mailadmin.install (which contains one line:) opt/mailadmin opt/ The bzr builddeb process uses this file as expected.

• More Tables or More Databases?

  I got an e-mail from someone that has an interesting situation. He has 15,000 customers, and he asks if he should have a database for their data per customer. Without a LOT more data it’s impossible to say, of course, but there are some general concepts to keep in mind. Whenever you’re segmenting data, it’s all about boundary choices. You have not only boundaries around how big the data will get, but things like how many objects (tables, stored procedures and so on) that will be involved, if there are any cross-sections of data (do they share location or product information) and – very important – what are the security requirements? From the answer to these types of questions, you now have the choice of making multiple tables in a single database, or using multiple databases. A database carries some overhead – it needs a certain amount of memory for locking and so on. But it has a very clean boundary – everything from objects to security can be kept apart. Having multiple users in the same database is possible as well, using things like a Schema. But keeping 15,000 schemas can be challenging as well. My recommendation in complex situations like this is similar to a post on decisions that I did earlier – I lay out the choices on a spreadsheet in rows, and then my requirements at the top in the columns. I  give each choice a number based on how well it meets each requirement. At the end, the highest number wins. And many times it’s a mix – perhaps this person could segment customers into larger regions or districts or products, in a database. Within that database might be multiple schemas for the customers.   Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?Here is how it happens: I wanted to download a 12GB torrent.After adding the .torrent file, transmission turned into a zombie process.I tried ktorrent too.Same behavior.Finally I could download the file using µTorrent but after closing the program, it turns into a zombie as well. I tried using kill skill and pkill with different options and -9 signal but no success. In some answers in web I found out killing the parent can kill the zombie, but killing wine didn't help either. Is there another way?   The effects of Agile Programming can alter the five desirable properties of modeling tools and techniques as documented by Pfleeger. The agile methodology does promote human understanding and communication through the use of short iterative software development life cycles which forces stakeholders to review the project and adjust the project for any requirement changes.  Due to the consistent evaluations of a project and requirements, process are continually being refined, upgraded, and compared against other alternatives to ensure the best design delivered to the client. Due to the short repetitive development cycles, increased time is devoted to process management due to the fact that requirements and designs could be constantly changing. This requires additional forecasting, monitoring, and planning for each iteration. Because things can change so rapidly, automated guidance in performing process must be updated for each iteration because the environment and the available reusable process could change. In addition, the original guidance and suggestions for the project also need to be updated to account for these changes as well.   In essence the automation of process execution is supported by the agile methodology because during every iteration all processes must be tested, evaluated to ensure process integrity and compliance with the customer’s requirements. I do not think the agile approach diminishes modeling, in fact I think it increases the modeling because before the start of every development cycle, modeling must be checked for accuracy based on the changed requirements. So in essence the reduced time spent initially designing the models is in fact gained as the project completes every iteration of the project.

• So we've got a code review tool, now what can we use for software documents?

  We're using Subversion as a full CM for code and also for related project documents. We have JIRA and Fisheye. When we wanted to add a peer review tool, we looked at and tested several candidates. Our weighted requirements included both code and document review, but ultimately, the integration with JIRA slanted the scores in Crucible's favor. Atlassian has slammed the door on ever supporting Word or PDF in Crucible. I've tested several workaround methods to make Crucible work for documents without success. (The Confluence/Crucible plug-in was deprecated by Atlassian, so that option is out, too.) I haven't found a plugin for Crucible that adds this functionality, so short of writing my own plug-in, Crucible for documents is unworkable. Word Track Changes doesn't provide a method for true collaboration and commenting. Adobe PDF Comment and Markup is interesting, but doesn't provide a great way to keep a permanent quality record of the conversation. We can't go cloud-based, our documents must be locally hosted on our own server only. We're only on Sharepoint 2007. Help! Anyone have a suggestion?

  I have been installing software packages from USC and I am getting the following error message. Worked fine one minute then the message below. Tried to search but couldn't find a solution Previously I was installing the sun-java6-jre package in terminal and had an connection outage and it didnt complete. I attempted an apt-get -f install with no success. i dont know what to try next. I'm relatively new to Linux. • System boots in console + login loop

  I messed up my system while trying to fix permission problems for setting up a LAMP local server. I tried this solution: How to avoid using sudo when working in /var/www? without success. Then I saw this solution: Permissions issue: how can Apache access files in my Home directory? I understood that I had to change the permissions of my root directory (among others), so I executed: sudo chmod 710 / I also changed the user group on / to www-data. I also did these operations on /home. I'm pretty sure one of those commands broke something, because it's the last commands I executed, and after that, my system showed strange/broken behavior: Firefox stopped showing pages Some icons got replaced by an red X icon (meaning "Icon not found" I guess) Applications refused to launch (no reaction) After rebooting: I got a strange graphical message talking about not being able to mount something, asking me if I wanted to wait, and talking about /tmp (I forgot the message since I was in shock) My system now boots in console, and when I login, it flashes unsignificant stuff* before re-asking me to login. My important data is on Ubuntu One. I'd prefer not having to reinstall from scratch. Is there a way to regain access to my system? Thanks a lot for your help. *Looks like a terminal header with the name of the OS and other info. Doesn't seem important.

• C printf not working on ubuntu 13.10 terminal

  First, im new in ubuntu so please bear with me. I need to create a C based program for a course in my university. I was using opensuse and its konsole when i was in the university's lab. So basically i need to install opensuse on my system or using a vmware. But i feel lazy to do that, so i tried to run it on my ubuntu instead of opensuse. However, no C code seems working on ubuntu's terminal. The compiling is success, but its not running, or at least the printf is not running. This is my code, a very very simple one : #include<stdio.h> #include<unistd.h> #include<stdlib.h> int main() { printf("test"); return 0; } When i compile it with gcc test.c -o test everything work fine and i get an executeable file. Then i try to run it by ./test, but the printf is not printed. No error or warning was shown. Am i missing something? Note : my gcc is the new one, it should has no problem. Thanks for your help :D

• Unable to record sound from web browser (firefox / chromium ) using recordmydesktop

  I have to do some screencast tutorials and i am using recordmydesktop with gtk frontend to do it. I need to record also the sound and here is where i have found the problem. It took me some time, but now I can record the sound from almost every application in my desktop ... almost. I need to capture some sound from a web application using java, but when i load the page nothing appears in the playback tab of pavucontrol. I think this is the problem, because if there is no sound stream i think the recordmydesktop program thinks there is no sound to record ... the funny thing is that I can ear the sound in my speakers! I have tried with Firefox and Chromium with no success. Although I have been able to record youtube videos without problem, so it seems that java is the key here. Any suggestion or idea? P.S.: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with this configuration. ( if more information is needed please let me know) sight i cannot post images ... so I have an audigy2 sound card using Analog Stereo Output profile. • Technology focussed solutions for Financial Services

  Just finished a short trip to London, where I presented our 3 new technology solutions for Financial Services to the Oracle Client Advisors for the top accounts in EMEA. The solutions were well received by all, with opportunities for all 3 in all the top accounts. The solutions that we are focused on this FY are - Large Scale Data Management platform - Extreme Java platform - Banking Modernization platform, which includes Payments Consolidation (Wholesale and Retail), Core Banking Modernization and Mainframe Offload. My team's responsibility is to build the resilient platform that our financial customers can run their applications on. If they chose Oracle's applications such as Flexcube or Reveleus, we have done the hard work to tightly integrate these applications with our LSDM and BM platforms. If however a customer decides to run a competitive application, they should rest assured that we have done the best possible integration work with those applications too. And in the case of Capital Markets where Oracle does not have trading or risk assets, our LSDM and EJP solutions work with our partner applications such as GoldenSource, PolarLake, Calypso to name a few.  I will detail these solutions in subsequent posts.

• Oracle Linux 6 update 3

  Oracle Linux 6.3 channels are now available online http://public-yum.oracle.com repositories. Both base channels and latest channels are available (for free for everyone) http://linux.oracle.com repositories. Behind our customer portal but effectively the same content. Source RPMs (.srpm) are being uploaded to http://oss.oracle.com/ol6/SRPMS-updates. OL6.3 contains UEK2 kernel-uek-2.6.39-200.24.1. The source rpm is in the above location but our public GIT repository will be synced up shortly as well at https://oss.oracle.com/git/?p=linux-uek-2.6.39.git;a=summary. Unlike some others, of course, complete source, complete changelog, complete checkin history, both mainline and our own available. No need to go assemble things from a website manually. Another cool thing coming up is a boot iso for OL6.3 that boots up uek (2.6.39-200.24.1) as install kernel and uses btrfs as the default filesystem for installation. So latest and greatest direct access to btrfs, a modern well-tested, current kernel, freely available. Enjoy. • Designing Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). I've been able to create [console] applications in C# that work pretty well, and they're usually structured something like this: static void Main() { // Load parameters from app.config. // Get documents from queue. var files = someInterface.GetFiles(someFilterOrRegexPattern); foreach (var file in files) { // Extract metadata from the file. // Validate some attributes of the file; add any validation errors to an in-memory // structure (e.g. List<ValidationErrors>). if (isValid) { // Upload using some wrapper for an ORM an someInterface.Upload(meta.Param1, meta.Param2, ...); } else { // Bounce the file } } // Report any validation errors (via message bus or SMTP or some such). } And that's pretty much it. Most of the time I wrap all these operations in a "Worker" class that takes the needed interfaces as constructor parameters. This approach has worked reasonably well, but I just get this feeling in my gut that there's something awful about it and would love some feedback. Is writing an ETL process as a C# Console app a bad idea? I'm also wondering if there are some design patterns that would be useful in this scenario that I'm clearly overlooking. Thanks in advance!

• Data Pump: Consistent Export?

  Ouch ... I have to admit as I did say in several workshops in the past weeks that a data pump export with expdp is per se consistent. Well ... I thought it is ... but it's not. Thanks to a customer who is doing a large unicode migration at the moment. We were discussing parameters in the expdp's par file. And I did ask my colleagues after doing some research on MOS. And here are the results of my "research": MOS Note 377218.1 has a nice example showing a data pump export of a partitioned table with DELETEs on that table as inconsistent Background:Back in the old 9i days when Data Pump was designed flashback technology wasn't as popular and well known as today - and UNDO usage was the major concern as a consistent per default export would have heavily relied on UNDO. That's why - similar to good ol' exp - the export won't operate per default in consistency mode To get a consistent data pump export with expdp you'll have to set: FLASHBACK_TIME=SYSTIMESTAMPin your parameter file. Then it will be consistent according to the timestamp when the process has been started. You could use FLASHBACK_SCN instead and determine the SCN beforehand if you'd like to be exact. So sorry if I had proclaimed a feature which unfortunately is not there by default - Mike

• High Performance SQL Views Using WITH(NOLOCK)

  Every now and then you find a simple way to make everything much faster. We often find customers creating data warehouses or OLAP cubes even though they have a relatively small amount of data (a few gigs) compared to their server memory. If you have more server memory than the size of your database or working set, nearly any aggregate query should run in a second or less. In some situations there may be high traffic on from the transactional application and SQL server may wait for several other queries to run before giving you your results. The purpose of this is make sure you don’t get two versions of the truth. In an ATM system, you want to give the bank balance after the withdrawal, not before or you may get a very unhappy customer. So by default databases are rightly very conservative about this kind of thing. Unfortunately this split-second precision comes at a cost. The performance of the query may not be acceptable by today’s standards because the database has to maintain locks on the server. Fortunately, SQL Server gives you a simple way to ask for the current version of the data without the pending transactions. To better facilitate reporting, you can create a view that includes these directives. CREATE VIEW CategoriesAndProducts AS SELECT * FROM dbo.Categories WITH(NOLOCK) INNER JOIN dbo.Products WITH(NOLOCK) ON dbo.Categories.CategoryID = dbo.Products.CategoryID In some cases quires that are taking minutes end up taking seconds. Much easier than moving the data to a separate database and it’s still pretty much real time give or take a few milliseconds. You’ve been warned not to use this for bank balances though. • How do I start Ubuntu without X server?

  So, I'm trying to install the official nVidia drivers for my fancy graphics card, and they advice disabling the X server before installing, as well as making sure that I can boot without the X server, so as not to wreck anything. However, I seem to be doing something wrong. As I understand it, this should be as simple as changing the runlevel from 2 to 1? (I am aware that all this may simply be me not understanding runlevels) If that is correct, a quick test should be simply typing "sudo init 1" or "sudo telinit 1" in a terminal? Doing that makes the system attempt to shutdown, only it stops at the purple screen with the ubuntu logo and 5 white dots underneath. I haven't observed it get anywhere from there, I always end up holding down the power button. "sudo telinit 3" has not visible effect. Alternatively, I should be able to get there using the recovery mode, activated through the grub menu? I have very little success with that. After picking recovery mode, I am faced with a set of options about how to proceed. Both choosing the one with "network enabled" and "text only", I get a dialog explaining that this will mount my / file system in read/write mode, and whether this is what I want. I choose yes, and it seems to report that my drive is fine (there's a single line of text detailing the state of the partition). And then it stops. I haven't tried letting it sit for more than a few minutes, but presumably this process should be comparable in duration to a regular boot? I am not particularly fond of messing with any .conf-files until I am certain that I can handle things with training wheels on. So, I guess there are two questions: the one in the title, and "how do I start a text-only session without changing defaults?" Thanks in advance :)
