  • Generating the query plan takes 5 minutes, the query itself runs in milliseconds. What's up?

    - by TheImirOfGroofunkistan
I have a fairly complex (or ugly depending on how you look at it) stored procedure running on SQL Server 2008. It bases a lot of the logic on a view that has a pk table and a fk table. The fk table is left joined to the pk table slightly more than 30 times (the fk table has a poor design - it uses name value pairs that I need to flatten out. Unfortunately, it's 3rd party and I cannot change it). Anyway, it had been running fine for weeks until I periodically noticed a run that would take 3-5 minutes. It turns out that this is the time it takes to generate the query plan. Once the query plan exists and is cached, the stored procedure itself runs very efficiently. Things run smoothly until there is a reason to regenerate and cache the query plan again. Has anyone seen this? Why does it take so long to generate the plan? Are there ways to make it come up with a plan faster?

  • Using ROWLOCK in an INSERT statement (MS SQL)

    - by RPS
Would it be wise to use ROWLOCK on an insert statement that is copying large amounts of data and inserting it into the same table? Ex) INSERT INTO TABLE with (rowlock) (id, name) select newid, name) from TABLE with (nolock) where id = 1 Does anybody have recommendations on how to improve this statement, as I see when MS SQL gets busy it will end in Timeout Query returned for MS SQL.

  • Master/Detail insert using BCP?

    - by Joseph
I've a master table with identity on for the primary key and I've some child tables. When I insert a record to the master table using BCP, how can I use the newly created ID from the master table to insert in the related child tables (May be BCP again)? Will it be possible? I may be able to set identity off, but, will it work? Thanks Joseph

  • Complex Query on cassandra

    - by Sadiqur Rahman
I have heard on cassandra database engine few days ago and searching for a good documentation on it. after studying on cassandra I got cassandra is more scalable than other data engine. I also read on Amazon SimpleDB but as SimpleDB has a limitation 10GB/table and Google Datastore is slower than Amazon SimpleDB, I prefer not to use them (Google Datastore, Amazon SimpleDB). So for making our site scaled specially high write rates with massive data, I like to use Cassandra as our Data Engine. But before starting using cassandra I am confused on "How to handle complex data using casssandra". I am giving you the MySQL database structure below, Please read this and give me a good suggestion. Users Table hasColum ID Primary hasColum email Unique hasColum FirstName hasColum LastName Category Table hasColum ID Primary hasColum Parent hasColum Category Posts Table hasColum ID Primary hasColum UID Index foreign key linked to users-ID hasColum CID Index foreign key linked to Category-ID hasColum Title hasColum Post Index hasColum PunDate Comments hasColum ID primary hasColum UID Index foreign key linked to users-ID hasColum PID Index foreign key linked to Posts-ID hasColum Comment User Group hasColum ID primary hasColum Name UserToGroup Table (for many to many relation only) hasColum UID foreign key linked to Users-ID hasColum GID foreign key linked to Group-ID Finally for your information, I like to use SimpleCassie PHP Class http://code.google.com/p/simpletools-php/ So, it will be very helpful if you can give me example using SimpleCassie

  • Why is OracleDataAdapter.Fill() Very Slow?

    - by John Gietzen
I am using a pretty complex query to retrieve some data out of one of our billing databases. I'm running in to an issue where the query seems to complete fairly quickly when executed with SQL Developer, but does not seem to ever finish when using the OracleDataAdapter.Fill() method. I'm only trying to read about 1000 rows, and the query completes in SQL Developer in about 20 seconds. What could be causing such drastic differences in performance? I have tons of other queries that run quickly using the same function. Here is the code I'm using to execute the query: using Oracle.DataAccess.Client; ... public DataTable ExecuteExternalQuery(string connectionString, string providerName, string queryText) { DbConnection connection = null; DbCommand selectCommand = null; DbDataAdapter adapter = null; switch (providerName) { case "System.Data.OracleClient": case "Oracle.DataAccess.Client": connection = new OracleConnection(connectionString); selectCommand = connection.CreateCommand(); adapter = new OracleDataAdapter((OracleCommand)selectCommand); break; ... } DataTable table = null; try { connection.Open(); selectCommand.CommandText = queryText; selectCommand.CommandTimeout = 300000; selectCommand.CommandType = CommandType.Text; table = new DataTable("result"); table.Locale = CultureInfo.CurrentCulture; adapter.Fill(table); } finally { adapter.Dispose(); if (connection.State != ConnectionState.Closed) { connection.Close(); } } return table; } And here is the general outline of the SQL I'm using: with trouble_calls as ( select work_order_number, account_number, date_entered from work_orders where date_entered >= sysdate - (15 + 31) -- Use the index to limit the number of rows scanned and wo_status not in ('Cancelled') and wo_type = 'Trouble Call' ) select account_number, work_order_number, date_entered from trouble_calls wo where wo.icoms_date >= sysdate - 15 and ( select count(*) from trouble_calls repeat where wo.account_number = repeat.account_number and wo.work_order_number <> repeat.work_order_number and wo.date_entered - repeat.date_entered between 0 and 30 ) >= 1

  • How to override ATTR_DEFAULT_IDENTIFIER_OPTIONS in Models in Doctrine?

    - by user309083
Here someone explained that setting a 'primary' attribute for any row in your Model will override Doctrine_Manager's ATTR_DEFAULT_IDENTIFIER_OPTIONS attribute: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2040675/how-do-you-override-a-constant-in-doctrines-models This works, however if you have a many to many relation whereby the intermediate table is created, even if you have set both columns in the intermediate to primary an error still results when Doctrine tries to place an index on the nonexistant 'id' column upon table creation. Here's my code: //Bootstrap // set the default primary key to be named 'id', integer, 4 bytes Doctrine_Manager::getInstance()->setAttribute( Doctrine_Core::ATTR_DEFAULT_IDENTIFIER_OPTIONS, array('name' => 'id', 'type' => 'integer', 'length' => 4)); //User Model class User extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->setTableName('users'); } public function setUp() { $this->hasMany('Role as roles', array( 'local' => 'id', 'foreign' => 'user_id', 'refClass' => 'UserRole', 'onDelete' => 'CASCADE' )); } } //Role Model class Role extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->setTableName('roles'); } public function setUp() { $this->hasMany('User as users', array( 'local' => 'id', 'foreign' => 'role_id', 'refClass' => 'UserRole' )); } } //UserRole Model class UserRole extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->setTableName('roles_users'); $this->hasColumn('user_id', 'integer', 4, array('primary'=>true)); $this->hasColumn('role_id', 'integer', 4, array('primary'=>true)); } } Resulting error: SQLSTATE[42000]: Syntax error or access violation: 1072 Key column 'id' doesn't exist in table. • SQL Server 2008: FileStream Insertion Failure w/ .NET 3.5SP1

    - by James Alexander
I've configured a db w/ a FileStream group and have a table w/ File type on it. When attempting to insert a streamed file and after I create the table row, my query to read the filepath out and the buffer returns a null file path. I can't seem to figure out why though. Here is the table creation script: /****** Object: Table [dbo].[JobInstanceFile] Script Date: 03/22/2010 18:05:36 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO SET ANSI_PADDING ON GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[JobInstanceFile]( [JobInstanceFileId] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [JobInstanceId] [int] NOT NULL, [File] [varbinary](max) FILESTREAM NULL, [FileId] [uniqueidentifier] ROWGUIDCOL NOT NULL, [Created] [datetime] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_JobInstanceFile] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [JobInstanceFileId] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] FILESTREAM_ON [JobInstanceFilesGroup], UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED ( [FileId] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] FILESTREAM_ON [JobInstanceFilesGroup] GO SET ANSI_PADDING OFF GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[JobInstanceFile] ADD DEFAULT (newid()) FOR [FileId] GO Here's my proc I call to create the row before streaming the file: /****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[JobInstanceFileCreate] Script Date: 03/22/2010 18:06:23 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO create proc [dbo].[JobInstanceFileCreate] @JobInstanceId int, @Created datetime as insert into JobInstanceFile (JobInstanceId, FileId, Created) values (@JobInstanceId, newid(), @Created) select scope_identity() GO And lastly, here's the code I'm using: public int CreateJobInstanceFile(int jobInstanceId, string filePath) { using (var connection = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConsumerMarketingStoreFiles"].ConnectionString)) using (var fileStream = new FileStream(filePath, FileMode.Open)) { connection.Open(); var tran = connection.BeginTransaction(IsolationLevel.ReadCommitted); try { //create the JobInstanceFile instance var command = new SqlCommand("JobInstanceFileCreate", connection) { Transaction = tran }; command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@JobInstanceId", jobInstanceId); command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Created", DateTime. Now); int jobInstanceFileId = Convert.ToInt32(command.ExecuteScalar()); //read out the filestream transaction context to stream the file for storage command.CommandText = "select [File].PathName(), GET_FILESTREAM_TRANSACTION_CONTEXT() from JobInstanceFile where JobInstanceFileId = @JobInstanceFileId"; command.CommandType = CommandType.Text; command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@JobInstanceFileId", jobInstanceFileId); using (SqlDataReader dr = command.ExecuteReader()) { dr.Read(); //get the file path we're writing out to string writePath = dr.GetString(0); using (var writeStream = new SqlFileStream(writePath, (byte[])dr.GetValue(1), FileAccess.ReadWrite)) { //copy from one stream to another byte[] bytes = new byte[65536]; int numBytes; while ((numBytes = fileStream.Read(bytes, 0, 65536)) 0) writeStream.Write(bytes, 0, numBytes); } } tran.Commit(); return jobInstanceFileId; } catch (Exception e) { tran.Rollback(); throw e; } } } Can someone please let me know what I'm doing wrong. • Validate checkboxes in MVC form

    - by Frode Lillerud
Hi, I have a table in an ASP.NET MVC2 form. On each row in the table there is a checkbox. Underneath the table there is a submitbutton. I want to make the button disabled when NONE of the checkboxes are selected. <% using Html.BeginForm(....) { %> <table> <% foreach (var item in Model) { %> <tr> <td> <input type="checkbox" name="selectedContacts" /> </td></tr> <% } //End foreach %> </table> <% } //End using %> <input type="submit" value="Create selection" name="CreateSelectionAction" /> The number of lines/checkboxes will vary from 1 to many. How can I use MVC2/jQuery to require the user to selected minimum one checkbox before clicking Submit button? Edit; Of the three answers below I couldn't get any of them to work. Nothing happens when clicking the checkboxes, and no Javascript errors are raised. Setting up a small bounty.

  • tolua++: Adding lua functions to a C++ class that has been exported to Lua

    - by skyeagle
I am using tolua++ to export some C++ classes to Lua. My understanding that each class is 'implemented' on the lua side, as a lua table. I am wondering if it is possible therefore, to add new (Lua) methods to the C++ object table so that I can achieve the effect of adding new methods to the C++ class. Assume that I am exporting the class Foobar. Methods of Foobar will be accessisble in Lua as follows: Foobar:method1() Foobar:method2() ... etc. I would like to be able to add new methods (newmethod1, and newmethod2) to the Foobar table "object" I have the following questions: Is it possible to 'extend' the functionality of an exported C++ object in the manner I described above? How would one go about add new functions to the Foobar table? (I am relatively new to Lua)

  • Patterns for implementing field change tracking.

    - by David
Hi all For one of my recent projects, I had to implement field change tracking. So anytime the user changed a value of a field, the change was recorded in order to allow full auditing of changes. In the database, I implemented this as a single table 'FieldChanges' with the following fields: TableName, FieldName, RecordId, DateOfChange, ChangedBy, IntValue, TextValue, DateTimeValue, BoolValue. The sproc saving changes to an object determines for each field whether it has been changed and inserts a record into FieldChanges if it has: if the type of the changed field is int, it records it in the IntValue field in the FieldChanges table, etc. This means that for any field in any table with any id value, I can query the FieldChanges table to get a list of changes. This works quite well but is a bit clumsy. Can anyone else who has implemented similar functionality suggest a better approach, and why they think it's better? I'd be really interested - thanks. David

  • How do I avoid a repetitive subquery JOIN in SQL?

    - by Karl
Hi In SQL Server 2008: I have one table, and I want to do something along the following lines: SELECT T1.stuff, T2.morestuff from ( SELECT code, date1, date2 from Table ) as T1 INNER JOIN ( SELECT code, date1, date2 from Table ) as T2 ON T1.code = T2.code and T1.date1 = T2.date2 The two subqueries are exactly identical. Is there any way I can do this without repeating the subquery script? Thanks Karl

  • Legit? Two foreign keys referencing the same primary key.

    - by Ryan
Hi All, I'm a web developer and have recently started a project with a company. Currently, I'm working with their DBA on getting the schema laid out for the site, and we've come to a disagreement regarding the design on a couple tables, and I'd like some opinions on the matter. Basically, we are working on a site that will implement a "friends" network. All users of the site will be contained in a table tblUsers with (PersonID int identity PK, etc). What I am wanting to do is to create a second table, tblNetwork, that will hold all of the relationships between users, with (NetworkID int identity PK, Owners_PersonID int FK, Friends_PersonID int FK, etc). Or conversely, remove the NetworkID, and have both the Owners_PersonID and Friends_PersonID shared as the Primary key. This is where the DBA has his problem. Saying that "he would only implement this kind of architecture in a data warehousing schema, and not for a website, and this is just another example of web developers trying to take the easy way out." Now obviously, his remark was a bit inflammatory, and that have helped motivate me to find an suitable answer, but more so, I'd just like to know how to do it right. I've been developing databases and programming for over 10 years, have worked with some top-notch minds, and have never heard this kind of argument. What the DBA is wanting to do is instead of storing both the Owners_PersonId and Friends_PersonId in the same table, is to create a third table tblFriends to store the Friends_PersonId, and have the tblNetwork have (NetworkID int identity PK, Owner_PersonID int FK, FriendsID int FK(from TBLFriends)). All that tblFriends would house would be (FriendsID int identity PK, Friends_PersonID(related back to Persons)). To me, creating the third table is just excessive in nature, and does nothing but create an alias for the Friends_PersonID, and cause me to have to add (what I view as unneeded) joins to all my queries, not to mention the extra cycles that will be necessary to perform the join on every query. Thanks for reading, appreciate comments. Ryan

  • Start position for a reused t- sql cursor?

    - by Span
I'm working on a stored procedure that uses a cursor on a temporary table (I have read a bit about why cursors are undesirable, but in this situation I believe I still need to use one). In my procedure I need to step through the rows of the table twice. Having declared the cursor, already stepped through the temporary table once and closed the cursor, would the position of the cursor remain at the end of the table when re-opened or does it reposition itself to the initial starting position (ie: before the first row)? Alternatively, to reposition the cursor must I do a 'FETCH FIRST' before stepping through again? Am I right to assume the 'cost' of doing this repositioning and reusing the cursor would be less than deallocating and reallocating the cursor?

  • Entity Framework query not returning correctly enumerated results.

    - by SkippyFire
I have this really strange problem where my entity framework query isn't enumerating correctly. The SQL Server table I'm using has a table with a Sku field, and the column is "distinct". It isn't a key, but it doesn't contain any duplicate values. Using actual SQL with where, distinct and group by cluases I have confirmed this. However, when I do this: // Not good foreach(var product in dc.Products) or // Not good foreach(var product in dc.Products.ToList()) or // Not good foreach(var product in dc.Products.OrderBy(p => p.Sku)) the first two objects that are returned ARE THE SAME!!! The third item was technically the second item in the table, but then the fourth item was the first row from the table again!!! The only solution I have found is to use the Distinct extension method, which shouldn't really do anything in this situation: // Good foreach(var product in dc.Products.ToList().Distinct()) Another weird thing about this is that the count of the resulting queries is the same!!! So whether or not the resulting enumerable has the correct results or duplicates, I always get the number of rows in the actual table! (No I don't have a limit clause anywhere). What could possibly cause this!?!?!?

  • the Memory problem about MySQL "SELECT *"

    - by Austin Huang
Dear all: I'm new to MySQL, and I have a question about the memory. I have a 200mb table(MyISAM, 2,000,000 rows), and I try to load all of it to the memory. I use python(actually MySQLdb in python) with sql: SELECT * FROM table. However, from my linux "top" I saw this python process uses 50% of my memory(which is total 6GB) I'm curious about why it uses about 3GB memory only for a 200 mb table. Thanks in advance!

  • Fluent composite foreign key mapping

The document_revision table should have a composite unique key consisting of the document_id and the revision number (where the document_id is also the foreign key to the document table). class Document { Guid Id; //other members omitted } class DocumentRevision { Guid document_id; //Part one of the primary key and also foreign key to Document.Id int revision; //Part two of the primary key //other members omitted }

  • Can I select 0 columns in SQL Server?

    - by Woody Zenfell III
I am hoping this question fares a little better than the similar Create a table without columns. Yes, I am asking about something that will strike most as pointlessly academic. It is easy to produce a SELECT result with 0 rows (but with columns), e.g. SELECT a = 1 WHERE 1 = 0. Is it possible to produce a SELECT result with 0 columns (but with rows)? e.g. something like SELECT NO COLUMNS FROM Foo. (This is not valid T-SQL.) I came across this because I wanted to insert several rows without specifying any column data for any of them. e.g. (SQL Server 2005) CREATE TABLE Bar (id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY) INSERT INTO Bar SELECT NO COLUMNS FROM Foo -- Invalid column name 'NO'. -- An explicit value for the identity column in table 'Bar' can only be specified when a column list is used and IDENTITY_INSERT is ON. One can insert a single row without specifying any column data, e.g. INSERT INTO Foo DEFAULT VALUES. One can query for a count of rows (without retrieving actual column data from the table), e.g. SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Foo. (But that result set, of course, has a column.) I tried things like INSERT INTO Bar () SELECT * FROM Foo -- Parameters supplied for object 'Bar' which is not a function. -- If the parameters are intended as a table hint, a WITH keyword is required. and INSERT INTO Bar DEFAULT VALUES SELECT * FROM Foo -- which is a standalone INSERT statement followed by a standalone SELECT statement. I can do what I need to do a different way, but the apparent lack of consistency in support for degenerate cases surprises me. I read through the relevant sections of BOL and didn't see anything. I was surprised to come up with nothing via Google either.

  • Sql Server CE - Temporary disable auto increment on a specific collum

    - by Fábio Antunes
Hi guys. I have this little question, thats been on my head for while now. Here it goes: Is it possible to temporary disable the Auto_Increment on the collum ID. So that i can add a new row to the table and being able specify the ID value when inserting the row. And then in the end enable the Auto_Increment again, and let do its work as usual? And if its possible how can i do it. The Table structure is very simple Collum Name (atributes) ID (Primary Key, Auto Increment, int, not null) Name (nvarchar(100), not null) Notice: The table name is: People. Lets also consider that the table already has data and cannot be changed. The database server is SQL Server CE. The SQL commands will be executed in a C# program, if its of any help. I really hope its possible, it would come very handy. Thanks

It seems it gets called after my finger/cursor is raised off of the cell. Thanks,

  • mnesia primary key

    - by maryjanne
Hi I have two tables one notes and one tag and I want to make the id from notes primary key to use it in the tag table, but I don't know where I do wrong. My notes id is generate from another table counter, with the function dirty_update_counter. My function for the id_notes from tag looks like this: Fun = fun() -> mnesia:write(#tag{ id_note =0}) end, mnesia:transaction(Fun). generate_Oid(TableName) when is_atom(TableName) -> F = fun() -> [Oid] = mnesia:read(tag, TableName, write), NewId = Oid#tag.id_note+1, New = Oid#tag{id_note = NewId}, mnesia:write(New), NewId end, mnesia:transaction(F). insert_n(N) when is_record(N, note) -> F = fun() -> {atomic, Id} = generate_Oid(note), New = N#note{id = Id}, mnesia:write(New), New end, mnesia:transaction(F). find_n(Id) when is_integer(Id) -> {atomic, [N]} = mnesia:transaction(fun() -> mnesia:read({note, Id}) end), N. But this function don't increment my field id_note from the table tag, despite the fact that in my note table, my id field is incremented from counter table. Thanks in advance for any help.
