  • My first .net web app - should I go straight to MVC framework (c.f. ASP.net)

    - by Greg
Hi, I'm done some WinForms work in C# but now moving to have to develop a web application front end in .NET (C#). I have experience developing web apps in Ruby on Rails (& a little with Java with JSP pages & struts mvc). Should I jump straight to MVC framework? (as opposed to going ASP.net) That is from the point of view of future direction for Microsoft & as well ease in ramping up from myself. Or if you like, given my experience to date, what would the pros/cons for me re MVC versus ASP.net? thanks

  • Java printf using variable field size?

    - by paxdiablo
I'm just trying to convert some C code over to Java and I'm having a little trouble with String.printf. In C, to get a specific width based on a variable, I can use: printf("Current index = %*d\n", sz, index); and it will format the integer to be a specific size based on sz. Trying: System.out.println(String.format("Current index = %*d\n", sz, index)); results in an error since it doesn't like the *. I currently have the following kludge: System.out.println(String.format("Current index = %" + sz + "d\n", index)); but I'm hoping there's a slightly better way, yes?

  • Confusion on using django socialauth

    - by Fedor
http://github.com/uswaretech/Django-Socialauth/tree/master/socialauth/ I'm a bit confused on how I should use this. Of course, I read the notes at the bottom but I'm a Django novice so I'll need a little hand holding. The structure of this looks like a project structure since it contains a urls.py but I'm also aware that applications can also have that. It also has a manage.py which leads me to believe it's a project ( plus the subdirectories ). So should I just be integrating portions of this into my existing project? This isn't an application, right? The README also mentions grabbing API Keys. So if I want a standard interface where you click on a google/yahoo logo and it forwards itself via Javascript to the authentication page where you login if you already aren't logged in, kicks you back to your own page, would I need API keys? Any other special tips are appreciated.

  • php question regarding arrays

    - by Martin
Hi there, I'm a (complete) php noob and need a little help with something. I'm working on a project whereby a user can select up to 6 categories via a form (I'm using ExpressionEngine). The output is like this: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3" ...and so on. The user can select up to 6 categories on that form. What I need: even if my result is 3 categories I need to have 6 'cells' - for want of a better word - even if they're empty: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3","","","" I've tried this: <?php $str = '(output goes here)'; print_r(explode(',', $str, 6)); ?> ...but the output give me: Array ( [0] => Cat1 [1] => Cat2 [2] => Cat3 [3] => [4] => [5] => ) How do I get from that to this: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3","","","" Does this make sense? Thanks Martin

  • PHP Simple modification/correction

    - by Adrian M.
Hello, I got this code from someone, it's almost perfect to create a dynamic breadcrumb, but there just a little glitch because it echoes two dividers before the breadcrumb: $crumbs = explode("/",$_SERVER["REQUEST_URI"]); foreach($crumbs as $crumb){ echo ucfirst(str_replace(array(".php","_"),array(""," "),'>' . $crumb)); } it echoes: "contentcommonfile" what I want it to look like is "contentcommon1" and also I will deeply appreciate if someone can tell me how can I add links for all the items in the array except the last one (file)? Thank you so much everybody, this website really helped me a lot to learn php by examples!

  • Java WebApp: Loading resource from .jar located in WEB-INF

    - by shaman.sir
There are a lot of similar questions, but, probably, mine is a little bit different: What is the right way to load resource from inside of .jar file located in WEB-INF/lib folder (if I know the jar file name and the name of the class it resource belongs to), while Web Application is running? Should I use getServletContext().getResourceAsStream(?) for this purpose or the <name-of-known-class>.getResourseAsStream(?), and what path do I need to specify there? So, the structure is: /WEB-INF /classes /some/package/name ?.class #some Java code or Servlet that tries to read 'required-file.xml' /lib /<jar-with-known-name>.jar /another/package/with/known/name SomeKnownClass.class required-file.xml

  • std::map operator[] and automatically created new objects

    - by thomas-gies
I'm a little bit scared about something like this: std::map<DWORD, DWORD> tmap; tmap[0]+=1; tmap[0]+=1; tmap[0]+=1; Since DWORD's are not automatically initialized, I'm always afraid of tmap[0] being a random number that is incremented. How does the map know hot to initialize a DWORD if the runtime does not know how to do it? Is it guaranteed, that the result is always tmap[0] == 3?

  • Hibernate: How do I link a subclass to its superclass?

    - by Markus
Hey there! I'm having a little problem setting up my webshop project. Thing is, I have a User() superclass and two subclasses, PrivateUser and BusinessUser. Now, I'm not quite sure how to get my head around storing this relationship via hibernate. For the purpose of this question, the User() class contains only one field: String address; the PrivateUser contains: String firstName; and the BusinessUser contains: String CompanyName; Each field has its getter and setter. As is right now, I would only store and be able to get firstName and companyName. When I fetch a user from my DB using Hibernate I would get a PrivateUser/BusinessUser with a null address. Bottom line is, could someone point me towards a useful tutorial or better yet show a similar example code? Thanks!

  • OpenCV SVD Matrix format.

    - by Rick
I currently have a set of 2D Cartesian coordinates e.g. {(1,3), (2,2), (3,4)} Which will be put into a 2D array, to perform SVD properly would the matrix be put together such that the coordinates form the columns or the rows e.g. 1 3 2 2 3 4 or 1 2 3 3 2 4 I have been doing a little trial and error comparing to examples of SVD I have found online, the resulting matrix usually seems to be negated, with some of the values shuffled around. To clarify further if I had a matrix E which was MxN as shown here http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bb/Matrix.svg To define the matrix as a 2D array would it be Array[M][N] or Array[N][M] I am assuming this actually matters due to matrix arithmetic not being commutative? Can anyone actually verify this?

  • Hidden features of CSS

    - by alex
I have definitely picked up some useful tips in the hidden features style questions concerning PHP and XHTML. So here is one to cover CSS. While easy to pick up, it takes a little while to learn about everything, their default behaviors, properties etc Here are some to start the ball @charset "UTF-8"; /* set the character set. must be first line as Gumbo points out in comments */ .element { /* takes precedence over other stylings */ display: block !important; /* mozilla .... rounded corners with no images */ -moz-border-radius: 10px; /* webkit equivalent */ -webkit-border-radius: 10px } These are not so much hidden, but their use is not often widespread. What tips, tricks, rare features have you discovered with CSS?

  • Bit manipulation, permutate bits

    - by triktae
Hi. I am trying to make a loop that loops through all different integers where exactly 10 of the last 40 bits are set high, the rest set low. The reason is that I have a map with 40 different values, and I want to sum all different ways ten of these values can be multiplied. (This is just out of curiosity, so it's really the "bitmanip"-loop that is of interest, not the sum as such.) If I were to do this with e.g. 2 out of 4 bits, it would be easy to set all manually, 0011 = 7, 0101 = 5, 1001 = 9, 0110 = 6, 1010 = 10, 1100 = 12, but with 10 out of 40 I can't seem to find a method to generate these effectively. I tried, starting with 1023 ( = 1111111111 in binary), finding a good way to manipulate this, but with no success. I've been trying to do this in C++, but it's really the general method(if any) that is of interest. I did some googling, but with little success, if anyone has a good link, that would of course be appreciated too. :)

  • Website downloader library

    - by Midhat
I need to put a little project together for myself, and I need some functionality to download a page for offline viewing. Is there a library that will download a given page and its embedded images, and edit the img tags to reflect the local locations of the images. I know there are a lot of website downloaders out there, but I cant find something that i can use directly in my code. I have some basic scripts done in python, so Python is very welcome. but pretty much any language will do.

  • More pythonic way to iterate

    - by fmark
I am using a module that is part of a commercial software API. The good news is there is a python module - the bad news is that its pretty unpythonic. To iterate over rows, the follwoing syntax is used: cursor = gp.getcursor(table) row = cursor.Next() while row: #do something with row row = cursor.next() What is the most pythonic way to deal with this situation? I have considered creating a first class function/generator and wrapping calls to a for loop in it: def cursor_iterator(cursor): row = cursor.Next() while row: yield row row = cursor.next() [...] cursor = gp.getcursor(table) for row in cursor_iterator(cursor): # do something with row This is an improvement, but feels a little clumsy. Is there a more pythonic approach? Should I create a wrapper class around the table type?

  • How to debug a bundle in XCode?

    - by Paperflyer
I wrote a nice little program. At some point, it is required to load a bundle with some additional functionality. I, too, am the author of the bundle, so I have the source code and Xcode-projects for both the main application and the bundle. Until now, I simply dragged the bundle into the resources-folder in the main application, which works fine for running it, but I can't debug it (and of course there is an error in it). Is there a way to set up Xcode so that I can debug the bundle?

  • How do I customize the WPF StatusBar layout?

    - by Kent Boogaart
Adding more than one child to a WPF StatusBar results in poor layout with little option to customize. For example, this code: <StatusBar> <StatusBarItem> <TextBlock>Ready</TextBlock> </StatusBarItem> <StatusBarItem> <TextBlock>Set</TextBlock> </StatusBarItem> </StatusBar> Results in: This is not the ideal layout, since the "Set" is squeezed right up against the "Ready". How do I gain full control over the layout of the WPF StatusBar control?

  • Twitter API and rate limiting - I am confused

    - by jeffreyveon
I am new to the Twitter API, and I looked at their whitelisting policies and I am a little confused... I'm basically writing a twitter aggregrator that crawls the public tweets of a set of users (not more than 200) hourly. I wanted to apply for whitelisting, and they seem to offer account based and IP based whitelisting. Since I am using a shared hosting, my outbound IP address might vary (and twitter does'nt allow IP ranges for whitelisting). So I am considering using account based whitelisting. However, while using OAuth, is it possible for me to use account based whitelisting for a background process that crawls the API hourly?

  • Asp.Net MVC style routing in Django

    - by Andrew Hanson
I've been programming in Asp.Net MVC for quite some time now and to expand a little bit beyond the .Net world I've recently began learning Python and Django. I am enjoying Django but one thing I am missing from Asp.Net MVC is the automatic routing from my urls to my controller actions. In Asp.Net MVC I can build much of my application using this single default route: routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = "" } // Parameter defaults ); In Django I've found myself adding an entry to urls.py for each view that I want to expose which leads to a lot more url patterns than I've become used to in Asp.Net MVC. Is there a way to create a single url pattern in Django that will handle "[Application]/view/[params]" in a way similar to Asp.Net MVC? Perhaps at the main web site level?

  • NNTP & Socket - How to interrupt?

    - by Cosmo
Hi. I'm sending a message to a NNTP server in order to fetch an article's body. I don't want to wait for the answer to complete, cause I only need the first 3 lines from the body. How can I interrupt the transfer and move on to the next article? Now when I request another's article message body, I still get data from the previous one. The only way that worked for me, was to close the stream and reopen it. In my opinion this is a little bit hardcore, cause I have to login to the server every time I need a new file. Any help would be appreciated. Kind Regards.

  • Why my own UIViewController can't detect touch?

    - by Tattat
I have my OwnViewController, the viewDidLoad is like this: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; UIImage *img = [UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile: [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"myImg" ofType:@"png"]]; CGRect cropRect = CGRectMake(175, 0, 175, 175); CGImageRef imageRef = CGImageCreateWithImageInRect([img CGImage], cropRect); UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 175, 175)]; imageView.image = [UIImage imageWithCGImage:imageRef]; self.view = imageView; CGImageRelease(imageRef); } It works, and I have detect touches method like this: - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { NSLog(@"touchesBegan"); } But my UIView can't detect any touches. My Own UIViewController is a subclass of UIViewController. It is a little square view on the IB, why that can't detect touches? thx u.

  • Trouble making OAuth signed requests

    - by behrk2
Hello, I am able to successfully make non-authenticated and protected calls to the Netflix API. I am having a little trouble making signed requests to the catalog, however. Using the OAuth Test page, it is clear to me that my Base String is correct. My request URL is also correct, except for the oauth_signature. The oauth_signature is the only thing that differs. If I understand correctly, the only difference between a protected call and a signed call is that there are no tokens involved, and that I am appending on call parameters (such as term). So, I am using the exact same code that I use for my protected calls that I am for my signed calls, except my signature key ONLY contains my shared secret (with an ampersand sign on the end of it). It does not use the access token. Am I missing something here? Where else can I be going wrong? Thanks!

  • Correct syntax for php inside a feed request

    - by Simon Hume
Hi guys, I have a very basic query string which passes a ID to a receiving page. On that page, I need to dynamically call the YouTube API, giving my playlistID. I'm having to use PHP for this, and it's a little out of my comfort zone, so hopefully someone can wade in with a quick fix for me. Here is my variable $playlist; And I need to replace the 77DC230FBBCE4D58 below with that variable. $feedURL = 'http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/playlists/77DC230FBBCE4D58?v=2'; Any help, as always, greatly appreciated!

  • Is it possible to do AJAX calls in a liquid template?

    - by Brian Armstrong
I'm looking at the liquid templating language for Rails apps: http://wiki.github.com/tobi/liquid/ I'd like my users to also be able to make AJAX calls (just like the ones in rails for periodically_call_remote, observe_field, etc). Is this possible? Assuming the rails helpers can be added as filters, how will the user be able to modify what gets returned by the AJAX call? They cannot modify an rjs file on the server or anything like that. I suppose the AJAX call could return JSON (instead of rendered html) and then the javascript could use that to render something. But I'm having a little trouble envisioning how it would work exactly. If anyone can point me to an example of this or clarify it'd be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • phpDocumentor alternative consuming less memory

    - by Michal Cihar
Okay, I'm fed up with phpDocumentator. It consumes way much more memory and time than I'm willing to give it. Does there exist some really compatible program to generate documentation for PHP code? I've tried PHPDoctor, which looks nice, but it has some missing features. I've also tried PhpDocGen, but it just bails out with some Perl errors, which I'm too lazy to study. Doxygen also does not seem to play well with our sources. PS: The documentation would be for phpMyAdmin, a little bit outdated documentation is here.

  • Vehicle 2 Vehicle Communication Questions

    - by pinnacler
I have a rare opportunity to meet the man in charge of implementing vehicle 2 vehicle communication for the US Department of Transportation with 2 others in a few hours. Do YOU have any questions for him? I know this is a little outside the normal, but this is a 'reverse' thread and I felt he has some great knowledge on the subject that I want to share with this community. I'll post his answers later today to his questions. Ask about V2V implementation, privacy issues, use cases, or if you've thought of a great way to use V2V and want me to share it with him, he can at least think about it. He is in charge of panel that creates the standard. Or anything else...

  • Using OpenGL drawing operations in an object-oriented setting?

    - by Lion Kabob
I've been plowing through basic shaders and whatnot for an application I'm writing, and I've been having trouble figuring out a high-level organization for the drawing calls. I'm thinking of having a singleton class which implements a number of basic drawing operations, taking data from "user" classes and passing that to the appropriate opengl calls. I'm wondering how people do this when writing their own applications, as the internet is chock full of basic "Your first shader" tutorials, but very little on suggested organization of drawing code. My particular environment is targeted at iPad/OpenGL ES 2.0, but I think the question stands for most environments.
