• Migration with SysPrep, ImageX and

  I know that you can use SysPrep and ImageX to create a prepared image that can be used on several systems but the question is. How well does it work in a corporate environment of moving machines from old hardware off to new harddrives and new hardware? EDIT: The system runs accounting software and databases. So would SysPrep remove all License keys and other information which means would cause problems right? Would something else be a better option even though there are heavy costs involved? Currently, when I clone/copy the drive, Windows will black screen on me. So I need something with differential hardware support?

• Backup Permissions for an Active Directory Profile Directory

  I have Folder Redirection turned on so the profiles are on a Windows shared folder on a File and Print Server... \folders\Profiles I want to back up the entire Profiles directory, but as Domain Admin I don't seem to have the privileges to "select all and copy" the entire directory structure. The user profile subfolders (Appdata, Documents, Desktop, Pictures, etc.) throw access denied errors... I tried to grant Domain Admins full privileges to the Profiles directory and thought the subfolders would inherit the privileges, but I get access denied errors just trying to set the permissions... How can I assign a user to the Profiles directory so that I can copy the entire directory tree to back it up?

• No "Terminal Services" branch in "Group Policy Object Editor"

  Hi, We have several identical several servers in a hosting company. They run Windows 2003 R2 Std SP2 64bit. The servers are not in a domain. We have recently received a new server with the same configuration and hardware. However, the new server is different in some way. When we run "gpedit.msc /s" there are much less options in the tree than the other servers. Specifically we are missing the configuration of "Terminal Services". Many other items are missing under "Administrative templates" and "Windows components". • Website pages very slow to load on first access

  I have a production web server that makes sites to be very slow when load for first time. After the first time all connections are normal and fast. In the following screen you can see the first test I have run for a random site in my server: and here you can see the result of the second time request: As you can see there is a big change in the second load of the same page. Here is the page load time graph: My problem is that I don't really know anything about Red Had Linux server, and also I don't know where can I start. Can somebody to help me ? I like to find out the solution for the long time "wait" in connection. I know that my question is very minimal, but you can always ask me to give you information about the server.

• User profile and desktop unclickable and unviewable from windows explorer

  Situation: Windows Vista, latest updates. After restarting to complete an installation, I find myself looking at a totally black windows desktop without any icons. The start menu and taskbar, including quickstart icons, appears. Some, but not all task bar tray icons appear. The systems seems stable. When I open Windows Explorer and click "desktop" in the folder treeview, the cursor immediately jumps back to the previously selected item. No error. Same when clicking on my user's profile or my documents. When I try "save as" in, say, Notepad, nothing happens, the dialog box (which defaults to "my documents") doesn't even show. Again, no error. Nothing serious afaict in the event log. Typing something Start Search shows "Search failed to initialize". Anybody ever encountered such abomination?

• HP Color LaserJet 2605dn color alignment issue

  We have a HP Color LaserJet 2605dn at work that recently lost its mind. The red and blue colors are offset from where they should be and producing a rather trippy 3D look. I've performed a manual calibration through the menus and poked at just about everything I could find. These toner cartridges are not new (as you can see they're about 50% used) but only just recently started this problem. They were working great up until this error appeared. It happens on mac, pc, and via the printer menu printouts so I don't think it's a driver problem. The printer has been restarted and reset and is running the newest firmware. Anyone have any ideas? • How to specify file permission when putting a file using OpenSSH sftp command

  I am using various SFTP clients for uploading files to an SFTP server and I have a problem with default permission used when putting files. When requesting to put a file, SFTP client like WinSCP or Filezilla will send the SSH_OPEN command without requesting any explicit file permission. On the other side, it looks like the OpenSSH sftp command on Linux (Red Hat and Ubuntu) is pending the SSH_OPEN command together with the '640' mode. How can I configure the OpenSSH command to not explictly set the file mode or how can I configure it to send a mode, other than 640? Many thanks! • LFD always stops working after ~30 days, until I give /etc/csf/csf.pl -r

• Virtual dedicated server repetitive draining RAM, OOM constantly

  My linux (fedora red hat 7) virtual dedicated server has been experiencing OOM multiple times a day for the past several days. I thought the issue was with spamd/spamassassin but after disabling this the errors remains.   Because I have to stare at my command prompt all the time on my computer, it should look at least half-decent, so I am trying to get it colored. The expected outcome is as seen on this site. I have the colors I want set in my .Xdefaults file, but they of course do not color my prompt. My .zshrc is Phil's Prompt.   Trying to install MySQL onto the Windows XP machine. While going through the installation steps (in the "MySQL Server Instance Config. Wizard"), I get to a point where it the window reads: MySQL Server Instance Configuration (bold header) Choose the configuration for the server instance. Ready to execute... o Prepare configuration o Write configuration file o Start service o Apply security settings (this line is greyed out) Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. [ Back ] [ Execute ] [ Cancel ] So I press execute, and then a red X appears in the second step: Write configuration file and at the bottom, where it originally said: Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. It now says: The template configuration file cannot be found at C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin\my-template.cnf I'm unsure what it means, but I canceled the config wizard and looked in the directory that had been created (C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0). • HD Video Capture Card w/ Good API?

  Does anyone here know of a good HD video capture card that has a good (comprehensive) API? I administer a few servers that do some video encoding right now, but when we make the switch to HD cameras, they won't be sufficient. In addition to this, the servers we have now are black boxes, closed to me except to start/stop the video capture device. I'd like to be able to roll my own, so we can better integrate it with our existing systems, but I know almost nothing about what kind of HD capture cards are out there, and if I can avoid spending money just to test their APIs that would rock. So does anyone have any experience with this? All our other software is in C#, and I'd like to set up the new servers with web interfaces to start/stop the capture (also in C#, using .NET 3.5 probably). I'm not sure how language specific these APIs would be, but that's what I'm working with just as a reference point. I appreciate any help the community can give!

• Windows XP won't boot after drive transplant

  Hi all, I moved my hard drive from my Lenovo laptop into my Asus Eee PC netbook. When I started the netbook, after POST all I got was a black screen with a cursor in the upper left corner. I thought that the migration should work OK because this was a 32-bit version of Windows XP, and the Atom processor in the Asus should support the x86 instruction set. However, I don't know much about Windows, so maybe this was a dumb thought. I did verify that the BIOS can find the drive. It required major surgery to replace the drive, so any solution requiring me to remove the transplant drive is not going to fly. Keeping in mind that the netbook has no optical drive and that I have no other Windows computers (all my other computers run Linux), is there any way I can fix this problem? Thanks! Nathan

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. But still i get this, PHP Fatal error: Class 'mysqli' not found i tried enabling dynamic loading and initialize php scripts with dl("mysqli.so"); i also tried recompiling the php source: ./configure --with-mysql=/usr/lib64/mysql --with- mysqli=/usr/lib64/mysql/mysql_config even this didn't work. I modified the drive MBR with grubinst.exe (hd1), copied in its root grldr and the menu menu.lst file: color blue/green yellow/red white/magenta white/magenta timeout 30 default 0 title Win 7 test rootnoverify (hd0, 0) chainloader /bootmgr I get the error: Try (hd0, 0). This partition is ntfs but with unknown boot record Try (hd0, 1) ... ... Cannot find GRLDR. If I hit a key, anyway it boots Windows 7. • DSL connection dropping when starting game

  New connection set up last week - have called tech support, signal fine, sending out tech guy tomorrow - however i cant make sense of this using Vista, 2wire connection 6mb ATT conn, wireless, i can browse website, stream video from my PC wirelessly to my xbox, watch Hulu in high res, connection seems fine I load up World of Warcraft, i select Enter World and without fail my 2wire modem 'DSL' light goes red, my internet light goes out, im no longer connected, then after 10 or 15 seconds it works again, but game has kicked me Noticed the same thing on opening or closing Utorrent as well No other phones/devices plugged into the phone jacks in the apartment - why would joining a game cause my DSL to drop? i can only guess it throws a bunch of information to the server when i hit 'enter world' and that causes an issue that shuts my connection down or my router hates me - all help appreciated

• Giving a normal user and Mysql access to a common directory

  We need a common directory where Mysql can do a SELECT INTO OUTFILE and then the file can be picked up by a virtual server user in /home/theuser and worked on. I can perform the SELECT INTO OUTFILE into the /tmp/ dir but theuser does not have access here. Would it be ok to grant the user access to tmp or is that bad practice? The other option I looked at was creating a group 'theusermysql' containing the mysql user and theuser. I set the group on the tree /home/theuser/thedumpfolder and gave write permissions on thedumpfolder, but for some reason mysql still complains that it cannot write here. I'm completely stumped! What would be the best practice way to have a common folder for these two users?

• Windows Live Family Safety Service keeps closing Start Menu

  Got my kids a new Toshiba Laptop for Christmas. I was setting it all up for them so it would be ready to go. Tonight I installed Windows Live Family Safety Parental Controls. In the process of testing I discovered that on all the accounts the Start Menu closes automatically within 3 seconds (or less) of opening. It seems that it happens every 3 seconds, so sometimes it is immediate, and if I open it again then it will stay open for a full 3 seconds. This of course is rather annoying, and I need to wrap it up so it is ready to go under the tree. I disabled the Windows Live Family Safety Service, and that fixed it. Enable it again and the behavior returns. Is this a feature of the service? Can I disable that feature and keep the other features?

• taskmgr.exe 100% CPU Usage

  Hi. I have 2 IBM servers Intel Xeon Dual core with 2gb RAM. the problem is that Taskmanager uses one full core when i open it. The same happens when i copy files in the explorer. OS: Windows 2003 Server Things i tried: Installed all updates They has kaspersky anti virus and they previously had Nod32. All drivers installed OK. All unused devices are disabled in the bios. Reinstalled win 2003 SP2. No conflict in drivers Tried opening via remote desktop and the problem continues. • Why are they putting "processors" on hard drives?

  What does it mean when they have a processor on the hard drive, how does it work, and what benfit does it have? I don't understand - the CPU is the processor and the hard drive transfers it's contents to RAM. Do have additional processors, preprocess the data some how? Here's some examples Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB "Dual processor speed" NETGEAR ReadyNAS 312 2-Bay Diskless Network Attached Storage "Dual-core Intel 2.1GHz processor and 2GB on-board memory" and routers now have processors too, why's that nescecary? I guess it sort of makes sense - some logic needs to happen for the packets to be read in to know which ports to send them out on, but why did old routers not need them? Example or wireless router with processor: "Dual-core processor"

• ifconfig return "unknown interface: no such device"

  I'm trying to install a Linux driver for my wireless network card (D-Link DWL-G510) on my Red Hat Linux 7.1 machine with a 2.4.37.9 kernel. I downloaded the serial monkey driver from the sourceforge site and was able to successfully compile the rt73 module and load it into the kernel. The problem now is that everytime I issue the command ifconfig wlan0 up it keeps returning with the following error message: wlan0: unknown interface: No such device. I'm at a loss as to what to do here. I specifed wlan0 as the alias for the rt73 module in the modules.conf and also tried to load the driver with the command modprobe rt73 ifname=wlan0 (this specifies the interface name according to the instructions packaged in the driver), but the error message still keeps coming up. Is there something else I need to do in Linux to configure the wlan0 part or is the module not recognizing the wireless network card? It would be quite strange if it is the later since all information from the Internet is indicating this is the linux driver I should be using for mentioned wireless card.
