• Very slow write performance on Debian 6.0 (AMD64) with DMCRYPT/LVM/RAID1

  I'm seeing very strange performance characteristics on one of my servers. This server is running a simple two-disk software-RAID1 setup with LVM spanning /dev/md0. One of the logical volumes /dev/vg0/secure is encrypted using dmcrypt with LUKS and mounted with the sync and noatimes flag. Writing to that volume is incredibly slow at 1.8 MB/s and the CPU usage stays near 0%. There are 8 crpyto/1-8 processes running (it's a Intel Quadcore CPU). I hope that someone on serverfault has seen this before :-(. uname -a 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 8 00:01:30 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux Interestingly, when I read from the device I get good performance numbers: reading without encryption: $ dd if=/dev/vg0/secure of=/dev/null bs=64k count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 6553600000 bytes (6.6 GB) copied, 68.8951 s, 95.1 MB/s reading with encryption: $ dd if=/dev/mapper/secure of=/dev/null bs=64k count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 6553600000 bytes (6.6 GB) copied, 69.7116 s, 94.0 MB/s However, when I try to write to the device: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=./test bs=64k 8809+0 records in 8809+0 records out 577306624 bytes (577 MB) copied, 321.861 s, 1.8 MB/s Also, when I read I see CPU usage, when I write, the CPU stays at almost 0% usage. • Passwordless SSH not working - keys copied and permissions set

  I know this question has been asked, but I'm certain I've done what all the other answers suggest. Machine A: used keygen -t rsa to create id_rsa.pub in ~/.ssh/ copied Machine A's id_rsa.pub to Machine B user's home directory Made the file permissions of id_rsa.pub 600 Machine B added Machine A's pub key to authorised_keys and authorised_keys2: cat ~/id_rsa.pub ~/.ssh/authorised_keys2 made the file permissions of id_rsa.pub 600 I've also ensured both the .ssh directories have the permission 700 on both machine A and B. If I try to login to machine B from machine A, I get asked for the password, not the ssh pass phrase. I've got the root users on both machines to talk to each other using password-less ssh, but I can't get a normal user to do it. Do the user names have to be the same on both sides? Or is there some setting else where I've missed. • Script to unstick VNC keys?

  I've run into dropped key events when connecting via VNC clients, leading to a "stuck key" (usually a meta key like CTRL or ALT) and searching around the common answer on how to solve it is often "press and release each meta key individually until the problem resolves". However, I've found this to be annoying and time consuming to try and solve it this way. Plus on a bad connection, it sometimes will miss the "key up" event for the meta key again, and still keep the key stuck. So I'm looking for an automated way to do this: From a script on the client side or the server side, is there a way to trigger "key up" events for all the meta keys (CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, and WIN/CMD, both Left and Right versions)? Or just a command to release all keys the server thinks are down at the moment? Or some scripted way to at least list which keys the server end thinks are down so I know which key to keep pressing and releasing to try and release it? I've got a Mac on the server end, so a Mac/Linux solution would be needed for my situation.

• Why is SSH finding remote keys for other accounts?

  This is a strange issue I'm having with SSH from my Macbook Pro to a Linux (Ubuntu 11.10) server. I have a DSA key setup on the remote Linux server under my home directory like this: /home/me/.ssh/authorzied_keys I also have the same DSA key setup for a few other accounts on the machine named "foo" and "bar". I can log into all of the accounts fine without any password. Therefore, the DSA keys are all setup correctly. The strange behavior I'm seeing is when debugging the SSH connection. During the connection, the SSH debug is outputting this: debug2: key: /Users/me/.ssh/id_dsa (0x7f91a1424220) debug2: key: /home/foo/.ssh/id_dsa (0x7f91a1425620) debug2: key: /home/bar/.ssh/id_rsa (0x7f91a1425c60) debug2: key: /Users/me/.ssh/id_rsa (0x0) This is strange for so many reasons, but essentially, why is SSH listing out keys on the server (/home/foo/.ssh/id_dsa and /home/bar/.ssh/id_rsa)? These files don't even exist on the server, so why are they listed? I'm not logging into the "foo" or "bar" accounts, so why is SSH even listing those? On my Macbook Pro, I only have a DSA key, but SSH is listing out an RSA key, what's that all about? Another user on the server doesn't get any of these messages when they log in and they have the exact same setup for their DSA key and the exact same Macbook Pro setup as mine? Does anyone know what these messages are and why SSH is outputting them?

  My company production servers (FOO, BAR...) are located behind two gateway servers (A, B). In order to connect to server FOO, I have to open a ssh connection with server A or B with my username JOHNDOE, then from A (or B) I can access any production server opening a SSH connection with a standard username (let's call it WEBBY). So, each time I have to do something like: ssh johndoe@a ... ssh webby@foo ... # now I can work on the server As you can imagine, this is a hassle when I need to use scp or if I need to quickly open multiple connections. I have configured a ssh key and also I'm using .ssh/config for some shortcuts. I was wondering if I can create some kind of ssh configuration in order to type ssh foo and let SSH open/forward all the connections for me. Is it possible? • How to remove Media Center from Windows 8

  I bought 2 Windows 8 upgrades, 1 for my PC and 1 for my notebook. I added Windows Media Center to my notebook using the free offer in November (side note: the key was emailed to me within 5 minutes, I see many people have been complaining that it takes a few days). Today I decided to add WMC to my PC as well, so I went onto the Microsoft website, same like last time, and I received the email within a few minutes. Once I added WMC, entered the key and the computer rebooted, my activation is now broken: This product key is already being used on another PC. Try a different key or buy a new one. After rereading the product key email, I realised that the WMC key was exactly the same as the one I had received in November for my notebook (I used the same email, i.e. my Microsoft account Outlook email, for both). I didn't think this would be a problem, as on Microsoft's feature pack page it states: ...is limited to five licenses per customer per promotion. So then I decided, I'll just remove WMC from my PC and go back to Windows 8 Pro. So I turned off the WMC feature, PC restarted, activation still broken because my key has been replaced. I then tried to activate it with my original Pro key. The error it gave was that this key cannot be used with this version of Windows, as it is now Windows 8 Pro with Media Center and not Windows 8 Pro anymore. I've searched a bit and it seems the only way to remove it is do a clean install. I tried the Windows 8 Downgrade Helper, which told me I was already running Win 8 Pro when I tried to downgrade, and that I was running Win 8 Pro with Media center when I tried the other option. To sum up: How do I remove Windows Media Center from Windows 8 Pro without having to do a clean install?

• Passenger/Rails not releasing memory

  I have an Ubuntu server running three separate Rails (2.3.8) applications with Passenger, REE and Apache. Recently we started experiencing problems with ruby processes eating up memory and consuming entire cores on our server. The site referenced here is a Rails application that is a RESTful API so it serves many requests every minute. Any guidance on what we should be checking or looking out for would be appreciated.

• How to "debug" a keyboard in Linux? Like pressing a key and seeing a code in a terminal.

  I didn't have an answer to my problem about adding additional keyboards in my Ubuntu 10.04. Questions mark is not working in my keyboard, only using Alt Gr key + W. So, I don't know if this is a problem with Ubuntu or Virtualbox itself (I'm running it inside a VM). I would like to debug this problem. The keyboard is plugged in, so when I press a key I believe something is being sent to my operating system, some code, I don't know. I would like to digg this problem, find some damn key code and find some damn *.conf file and manually fix my problem. So, do an application like this exist in Linux?

This now happens every single time. It is imperative that I get it sorted. The strange thing is that it behaves initially then starts to hang after several hours. I perused logs previously and nothing stood out. But I'm not satisfy with the video recording, video and audio out of synchronisation also video seems to be in slow motion. • How do I stop Gimp from autolaunching on startup?

  Gimp launches every time I log into Xubuntu (v. 13.10). Gimp is not shown under Settings Manager- Sessions and startup. It does not appear in ~/.config/autostart. • Building a common syntax and scoping framework.

  Hello fellow programmers, I was discussing a project the other day with a colleague of mine and I was curious to see what others had to say or if such a thing already existed. Background There are many programming languages. There are many IDE's and source editors that highlight and edit source code. Following perfectly and exactly the rules of a language to present auto-complete options and understand scopes in the code is rather complex. This task is complex enough that most IDE's implement different source-editors as plugins that often re-implement the same features over and over but in a different way (netbeans). From what I can tell most IDE's and source editors re-implement parsers that use regular expressions, or some meta-syntax Naur Form to describe the languages grammer generically. These parsers are implemented over and over and over again. Question Has anyone attempted to unify or describe a set of features through an API and have a consistent interface to parsing various programming languages and dialects. I'm not describing an IDE - but a consistent API for any program to use to parse and obtain meta-information from the source code. I realize various programming languages offer many different features which are difficult to 'abstract' into a set of features, but I feel this would be a worthwhile venture. It seems to me that this could possibly allow the authors of interpreters to help maintain a central grammer intepreter for their language. the Python foundation could maintain the Python grammer api, ANSI the C grammer api, Oracle the Java grammer API, etc Example usage If this was API existed code documentation generators could theoretically work across all dialects and languages to some level. It wouldn't matter if your project used 5 different languages a single application could document all of them and the comments and doc-tags within. Has anyone attempted this comprehensively?

  SSE (Server-Sent Event) is a standard mechanism used to push, over HTTP, server notifications to clients.  SSE is often compared to WebSocket as they are both supported in HTML 5 and they both provide the server a way to push information to their clients but they are different too! See here for some of the pros and cons of using one or the other. For REST application, SSE can be quite complementary as it offers an effective solution for a one-way publish-subscribe model, i.e. a REST client can 'subscribe' and get SSE based notifications from a REST endpoint. As a matter of fact, Jersey (JAX-RS Reference Implementation) already support SSE since quite some time (see the Jersey documentation for more details). There might also be some cases where one might want to use SSE directly from the Servlet API. Sending SSE notifications using the Servlet API is relatively straight forward. To give you an idea, check here for 2 SSE examples based on the Servlet 3.1 API.  We are thinking about adding SSE support in Java EE 8 but the question is where as there are several options, in the platform, where SSE could potentially be supported: the Servlet API the WebSocket API JAX-RS or even having a dedicated SSE API, and thus a dedicated JSR too! Santiago Pericas-Geertsen (JAX-RS Co-Spec Lead) conducted an initial investigation around that question. You can find the arguments for the different options and Santiago's findings here. So at this stage JAX-RS seems to be a good choice to support SSE in Java EE. This will obviously be discussed in the respective JCP Expert Groups but what is your opinion on this question?

• Facebook connect And Yahoo.. How and what exactly happened? Is there way to import facebook friend's email id?

  Hello, I have seen that yahoo now enables their users to import facebook friend's email addresses into their yahoo addressbook. As far as i know, facebook doesn't allow any API to fetch email addresses of any user on external websites. I have also seen that Yahoo imports email addresses only when the friend's have chosen not to display their contact email to themselves only. Many people in the world trying to implement applications using facebook's API to import email addresses of friend's (Only those email addresses which are visible on user's facebook profile) but API calls always return NULL to their requests. So i would like to know what exactly happened between facebook and yahoo? Does facebook have provided any concessions to Yahoo's addressbook importer application to import facebook user's email addresses? Is there any working API/method/way available to fetch email addresses of facebook friends who have chosen to display their contact email ids on their profile with 1: only visible to friends, 2: visible to everyone privacy settings? I have also seen that, facebook API page clearly listen that email/contact_email field's can be fetched using FQL. Nevertheless there is no official explanation on this issue of returning NULL when email/contact_email is requested from any API call. Regards

• Keypress detection wont work after seemingly unrelated code change

  I'm trying to have the Enter key cause a new 'map' to generate for my game, but for whatever reason after implementing full-screen in it the input check won't work anymore. I tried removing the new code and only pressing one key at a time, but it still won't work. Despite this, I have camera movement set inside another Game1 method that uses WASD and works perfectly.   I need some help or maybe only a hint for the right direction. I've got a system that is sperated into two applications. An existing VB.NET desktop client using Entity Framework 5 with code first approach and a asp.net Web Api client in C# that will be refactored right yet. It should be possible to deliver OData. The system and the datamodel is still involving and so migrations will happen in undefined intervalls. So I'm now struggling how to manage my database access on the web api system. So my favourd approch would be us Entity Framework on both systems but I'm running into trouble while creating new migrations. Two solutions I've thought about: Shared Data Access dll The first idea was to separate the data access layer to a seperate project an reference from each of the systems. The context would be the same as long as the dll is up to date in each system. This way both soulutions would be able to make a migration. The main problem ist that it is much more complicate to update a web api system than it is with the client Click Once Update Solution and not every migration is important for the web api. This would couse more update trouble and out of sync libraries Database First on Web Api The second idea was just to use the database first approch an on web api side. But it seems that all annotations will be lost by each model update. Other solutions with stored procedures have been discarded because of missing OData support and maintainability. Does anyone run into same conflicts or has any advices how such a problem can be solved!

• An ideal way to decode JSON documents in C?

  Assuming I have an API to consume that uses JSON as a data transmission method, what is an ideal way to decode the JSON returned by each API resource? For example, in Java I'd create a class for each API resource then initiate an object of that class and consume data from it. for example: class UserJson extends JsonParser { public function UserJson(String document) { /*Initial document parsing goes here...*/ } //A bunch of getter methods . . . . } The probably do something like this: UserJson userJson = new UserJson(jsonString);//Initial parsing goes in the constructor String username = userJson.getName();//Parse JSON name property then return it as a String. Or when using a programming language with associative arrays(i.e., hash table) the decoding process doesn't require creating a class: (PHP) $userJson = json_decode($jsonString);//Decode JSON as key=>value $username = $userJson['name']; But, when I'm programming in procedural programming languages (C), I can't go with either method, since C is neither OOP nor supports associative arrays(by default, at least). What is the "correct" method of parsing pre-defined JSON strings(i.e., JSON documents specified by the API provider via examples or documentation)? The method I'm currently using is creating a file for each API resource to parse, the problem with this method is that it's basically a lousy version of the OOP method, as it looks exactly like the OOP method but doesn't provide any OOP benefits(e.g., can't pass an object of the parser, etc.). I've been thinking about encapsulating each API resource parser file in a publicly accessed structure(pointing all functions/publicly usable variables to the structure) then accessing the parser file code from within the structure(parser.parse(), parser.getName(), etc.). As this way looks a bit better than the my current method, it still just a rip off the OOP way, isn't it? Any suggestions for methods to parse JSON documents on procedural programming lanauges? Any comments on the methods I'm currently using(either 3 of them)?

  You may have noticed that some JSRs have a classification of "Inactive" on their JSR page.  The introduction of this term in 2009 was part of an effort to enable and encourage more transparency into the development of JSRs.  You can read more about Inactive JSRs here and also in the JCP FAQ.The following JSR proposals have been Inactive since at least 2009. If you are a JCP Member and are interested in taking over the Specification Lead role for one of these JSRs, please contact the PMO at [email protected] on or before 23 April 2012.   Basically, I want to make api calls using an SDK I am writing. I have the following classes: Car CarData (stores input values needed to create a car like model, make, etc) Basically to create a car I do the following: [Car carWithData: cardata onSuccess: successHandler onError: errorHandler] that basically is a factory method that creates instance of Car after making an API call request and populating the new Car class with the response and passes that instance to the successHandler. So "Car" has the above static method to create that car, but also has non-static methods to edit, delete cars (which would make edit, delete API calls to the server) So when the Car create static method passes a new car to the successHandler by doing the following: successHandler([[Car alloc] initWithDictionary: dictionary) The success handler can go ahead and use that new car to do the following: [car update: cardata] [car delete] considering the new car object now has an ID for each car that it can pass to the update and delete API calls. My questions: Do I need a cardata object to store user inputs or can I store them in the car object that would also later store the response from all of the api calls? How can I improve this model? With regards to CarData, note that there might be different inputs for the different API calls. So create function might need to know model, make, etc, but find function might need to know the number of items to find, the limit, the start id, etc.

  I trying to use and / with element values but I just can't get it to work. If I do it with attrubute values it works like a charm.
