• How do I stop someone using my domain for Spam emails?

  Hi Blog Readers,Every now and then I seem to have one of those low life Viagra sellers using my domain for spam emailing people.I have done everything I can think of to try and prevent then from doing this, but they seem to keep doing it. • Calculate the Intersection of Two Volumes

  If you've ever played The Swapper, you'll have a good idea of what I'm asking about. I need to check for, and isolate, areas of a rectangle that may intersect with either a circle or another rectangle. These selected areas will receive special properties, and the areas will be non-static, since the intersecting shapes themselves will also be dynamic. My first thought was to use raycasting detection, though I've only seen that in use with circles, or even ellipses. I'm curious if there's a method of using raycasting with a more rectangular approach, or if there's a totally different method already in use to accomplish this task. I would like something more exact than checking in large chunks, and since I'm using SDL2 with a logical renderer size of 1920x1080, checking if each pixel is intersecting is out of the question, as it would slow things down past a playable speed. I already have a multi-shape collision function-template in place, and I could use that, though it only checks if sides or corners are intersecting; it does not compute the overlapping area, or even find the circle's secant line, though I can't imagine it would be overly complex to implement. TL;DR: I need to find and isolate areas of a rectangle that may intersect with a circle or another rectangle without checking every single pixel on-screen.

• Designing a Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). I've been able to create [console] applications in C# that work pretty well, and they're usually structured something like this: static void Main() { // Load parameters from app.config. // Get documents from queue. var files = someInterface.GetFiles(someFilterOrRegexPattern); foreach (var file in files) { // Extract metadata from the file. // Validate some attributes of the file; add any validation errors to an in-memory // structure (e.g. List<ValidationErrors>). if (isValid) { var fileData = File.ReadAllBytes(file); // Upload using some wrapper for an ORM or DAL someInterface.Upload(fileData, meta.Param1, meta.Param2, ...); } else { // Bounce the file } } // Report any validation errors (via message bus or SMTP or some such). } And that's pretty much it. Most of the time I wrap all these operations in a "Worker" class that takes the needed interfaces as constructor parameters. This approach has worked reasonably well, but I just get this feeling in my gut that there's something awful about it and would love some feedback. Is writing an ETL process as a C# Console app a bad idea? I'm also wondering if there are some design patterns that would be useful in this scenario that I'm clearly overlooking. Thanks in advance!

• Examples of permission-based authorization systems in .Net?

  I'm trying to figure out how to do roles/permissions in our application, and I am wondering if anyone knows of a good place to get a list of different permission-based authorization systems (preferably with code samples) and perhaps a list of pros/cons for each method. I've seen examples using simple dictionaries, custom attributes, claims-based authorization, and custom frameworks, but I can't find a simple explanation of when to use one over another and what the pros/cons are to using each method. (I'm sure there's other ways than the ones I've listed....) I have never done anything complex with permissions/authorization before, so all of this seems a little overwhelming to me and I'm having trouble figuring out what what is useful information that I can use and what isn't. What I DO know is that this is for a Windows environment using C#/WPF and WCF services. Some permission checks are done on the WCF service and some on the client. Some are business rules, some are authorization checks, and others are UI-related (such as what forms a user can see). They can be very generic like boolean or numeric values, or they can be more complex such as a range of values or a list of database items to be checked/unchecked. Permissions can be set on the group-level, user-level, branch-level, or a custom level, so I do not want to use role-based authorization. Users can be in multiple groups, and users with the appropriate authorization are in charge of creating/maintaining these groups. It is not uncommon for new groups to be created, so they can't be hard-coded.

• Choosing the right language for the job

  I'm currently working for a company on the engineering team of about 5-6 people and have been given the job of heading up the redesign of an embedded system tester. We've decided the general requirements and attributes that would be desirable in the system, and now I have to decide on a language to use for the system, or at the very least come up with a list of languages with pros and cons to present to the team. The general idea of the project is that we currently have a tester written in c++, which was never designed to be a tester, but instead has evolved to be such over the course of 3-4 years due to need. Writing tests for a new product requires modifying the 'framework' and writing code that is completely non-human readable or intuitive due to the way the system was originally designed. Now, we've decided that the time to modify this tester for each new product that we want to test has become too high and want to partially re-write the system so that we can program the actual tests in a scripting language that would then use the modified c++ framework on the back end to test the actual systems. The c++ framework would be responsible for doing all the actual work and the scripting language would just integrate with that to tell the framework what to do. Never having programmed in a scripting language (we program embedded systems), I've run into a wall where I have no experience with any of the languages that we could possibly use, but must somehow give pros and cons of each language so that we can choose the best one for the job. Currently my short list of possibilities includes: Python TCL Lua Perl My question is this: How can a person evaluate a language that he/she has never used before? What criteria are good indicators for a languages potential usability on a project? While helpful suggestions for my particular case are appreciated, I feel that this is a good skill to possess and would like to be able to apply this to many different projects if at all possible

• What are my options for sharing music between Windows & Ubuntu on the same network?

  We have a few Windows(XP & 7) and Ubuntu machines in the house sharing a wireless connection, and want to share music between them. If possible, I would like to be able to serve music from both Windows and Ubuntu (but it doesn't have to be the same time). I don't know much about sharing folders or streaming, but I'm guessing both would be options (that is, using a local client to access a shared song or a local client to access a shared stream). I want to be able to share the music between the systems as simply as possible. Bonus points (but not requirements) for cross-platform -- same application on both Windows and Ubuntu? available on startup (via daemon or autostart or whatnot) open source More info: All systems have dynamic addresses (DHCP) supplied from the ISP-supplied wireless router. There are several Gigabytes of music on one Windows XP box and one Ubuntu 10.10 The music is not well-sorted (I'm thinking this might have an impact on UI usability). Only has to be available internally (private address space behind the wireless router) bandwidth is not a problem We don't have (legitimate) admin access to the wireless router

• How do you prefer to handle image spriting in your web projects?

  It seems like these days it is pretty much mandatory for web applications to sprite images if they want many images on their site AND a fast load time. (Spriting is the process of combining all images referenced from a style sheet into one/few image(s) with each reference containing a different background position.) I was wondering what method of implementing sprites you all prefer in your web applications, given that we are referring to non-dynamic images which are included/designed by the programming team and not images which are dynamically uploaded by a third party. 1. Add new images to an existing sprite by hand, create new css reference by hand. 2. Generate a sprite server-side from your css files which all reference single images set to be background images of an html element that is the same size of the image you are spriting once per build and update all css references programmatically. 3. Use a sprite generating program to generate a sprite image for you once per release and hand insert the new css class / image into your project. 4. Other methods? I prefer two as it requires very little hand-coding and image editing.

• Recommended: IntelliCommand for Visual Studio 2010/2012

  The Morning Brew is a great news source for developers for many years now. In its most recent post it mentioned an extension for Visual Studio 2010 and 2012 called IntelliCommand that implements something that I had wanted for quite some time: Some kind of dynamic help for hotkeys. IntelliCommand shows a popup when you press and hold Ctrl, Shift or Alt (or combinations thereof) for a configurable amount of time, or after you press the first key combination of a chord shortcut key (e.g. Ctrl-E) and wait for an (independently configurable) amount of time. In the following screenshot I pressed and released Ctrl-E, and after a short delay the popup appeared: The extension is available in the Visual Studio Gallery, so finding, downloading and installing it via the Extension Manager is extremely simple: The default delays (2000 / 1600 milliseconds) are a bit long for my liking, but this can be changed in Tools – Options: So far things are working great on my machine. Some known issues do seem to exist, though (e.g. that the extension doesn’t work on non-EN versions of Visual Studio).   Its a very common use-case of LOV that we want to diplay a non key value in the LOV but store the key value in the DB. I had to do the same in a sample application I was building. During implementation of this, I realized that there are multiple ways to achieve this.I am going to describe each of these below.Example : Lets take an example of our classic HR schema. I have 2 tables Employee and Department where Dno is the foreign key attribute in Employee that references Department table.I want to create a LOV for Deparment such that the List always displays Dname instead of Dno.   Possible Duplicate: Make Google +1 button +1 a specific URL rather than the URL it's on? I'm creating an image sharing website, and since it's going to have many thousand links, then it's almost impossible to put a Google Plus One button in my site. Plus one is an indication of site's popularity and trust. You follow a link in SERP, because you see that somebody that you know has already plused one that link. So, you trust that link and click it. The more plus a page get, the more trustworthy it becomes. Sites which has simple static pages can get many plus ones, but sites like mine (dynamic sites with thousands of links) can't aggregate plus ones in one page. Is there any way to tell Google that I only want the Plus Ones to be counted for the domain only, and not for the path? In other words, how can I transfer a plus one given to the http://example.com/tag1-tag2/2525 to plus ones given to the http://example.com? Is it possible at all?

• Reflector Pro has now been released!

  After moving into the .NET division in May , and having a great time working on Reflector, I'm pleased to say that the results of that work are now available. Reflector Pro has now been released! The old Reflector as you know and love it is still available free of charge, and as part of this project we've fixed a number of bugs in the de-compilation that have been around for a long time. The Pro version comes as an add-in for Visual Studio - this offers dynamic de-compilation and generation of pdb files which allow you to step into the de-compiled code. Alex has some good pictures of this functionality on his beta post from around a month ago. Thanks to the other guys who've worked on this for taking me along for the ride - Alex, Andrew, Bart and Jason. Stephen did some great usability work, Chris Alford did some great technical authoring and Laila handled the launch publicity. Like all projects, there's always more I'd like to have done, but what we have looks like a pretty powerful addition to the developer's set of tools to me. • Blending animations for more character movements

  I am making a hack n slash 3rd person game. And I want the character movements to be more dynamic not like fighting games where you have a moves list. I want to animate tons of different animations and have them "Tween" between each other? Because I want the controls to not be keyboard mouse. I want it to be all keyboard. that way you have up to 10 inputs (All your fingers) to blend and morph animations to create more fluid movements. In the end this will almost be similar to characters typing a phrase or string of keys rather than move forward mouse look click to melee. My question is. Has anyone done this before and would someone go about trying to tween lets say one for key on the keyboard excluding Tab, Caps, R+Shift, L+Shift, Enter, R+Ctrl, L+Ctrl, L+Alt, R+Alt, Windows Key, and Menu. So thats all the numbers, letters and punctuation keys. Thats 46 keys gives me a combination of 46P1 = 5502622159812088949850305428800254892961651752960000000000L (used Python) and with a minimum entry value of 2 keypresses shortening to half. This is not humanly possible to create so many inique animations in one lifetime. But I'm guessing there is a reason this hasn't been done already. Or if I just used 10 basic keys. Maybe ASDF SPACE (RIGHT HAND) 456+0 (LEFT HAND KEYPAD) it would give me 3,628,800 posible unique animations.

• Android-Libgdx-ProGuard: Usefulness without DexGuard? [on hold]

  So I'm developing a game for Android - using LibGDX - and noticed that the Android SDK (HDK, MDK, WhatTheHellEvarDK) has ProGuard built-in. Browsing the ProGuard page is like searching Google: you get that the idea is to sell some product (in this case, it's DexGuard). That leaves me wondering what features are left out of ProGuard that a game developer targeting Android should worry about. For instance, the ProGuard FAQs answer the question: "Does ProGuard encrypt string constants?" by saying: "No. String encryption in program code has to be perfectly reversible by definition, so it only improves the obfuscation level. It increases the footprint of the code. However, by popular demand, ProGuard's closed-source sibling for Android, DexGuard, does provide string encryption, along with more protection techniques against static and dynamic analysis." Alright. OK. But isn't "...improves the obfuscation level" EXACTLY what ProGuard is supposed to do? Are there better options that can be implemented at build-time in Eclipse using the Gradle options and Libgdx? In particular, the assets folder and res-specific folders will need some protection. The code itself doesn't cure cancer, but I'd prefer if nobody could copy/paste it with different game art and call it "IhAxEdUrGamE"....

  Hello, my name is Iva and I am a member of the Internship program at Oracle Czech. When I joined Oracle, I initially worked as an Alliances and Channel Marketing Assistant at Oracle Czech Republic, but most recently, I have been working in the Demand Generation Team. I am a student of the Economics and Management Faculty at Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, specializing in Marketing, Business and Administration. I have recently passed my Bachelor exams. I received the information about Oracle’s Internship opportunity from a friend. I joined Oracle in September 2008 and worked as an Alliances and Channel Marketing Assistant until May 2009. Here I was responsible for the Open Market Model (OMM) and at the same time I was covering communication with Partners, Oracle Events and Team Buildings as well as creating Partner Databases and Reports. At the moment, I support our Demand Generation Team to execute Direct Marketing campaigns in Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and Hungary. In addition to this, I help with Reporting and Contact Data Management for the whole of the European Enlargement (EE) and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) regions. I enjoy my job and I appreciate the experience. Every day is interesting, because every day I learn something new. I am very happy that I was presented with an opportunity to work at Oracle and cooperate with friendly people in a multicultural environment. Oracle gives me the chance to develop my skills and start building my career. I am able to attend interesting training classes, improve my language skills and enjoy sporting activities, such as squash, swimming and aerobics, at the same time. • What is a good basic/flexible cms for a small website? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Content Management System (CMS) should I use? I'm designing a very basic portfolio website for an artist. It features a blog, portfolio, cv and contact page. I've handcoded the basics of this site in php/java, as it is a very small website (and I like coding by hand). But I need a simple cms backend for the dynamic parts of the website (the blog/portfolio). The big systems (ruby, joomla, wordpress) are far too invasive for my liking (and frankly a bit beyond my capabilities). Wordpress for example, requires too much adaptation of the design to the wordpress structure, and ruby is far too extensive for a simple site like this (in my opinion). So what I'm looking for is a (preferably open source) cms that has a simple backend for the artist to use as a blogger, with a mysql database for the content, that will allow me to insert content with simple tags (using smarty tags for example), but is otherwise not too invasive or demanding in terms of the required page structure. Does anyone know of a good cms that fits this description? p.s.: I have tried phpnews and cmsmadesimple, but phpnews was a litte too basic (but very close too what I'm looking for) and cmsmadesimple was way too slow (but otherwise also pretty close too what I wanted, though a bit too extensive).
