• How can I free files that are in use by quicklook?

  I have a couple pictures I was looking through and deleting stuck in my trash (Mac OSX 10.6 latest) and finder tells me they are in use when I try to delete them. I looked around online and found the lsof command in terminal (type lsod with a space, drag the file onto terminal, press enter) it told me the file was in use by: COMMAND PID FD Finder 7747 txt Finder 7747 13r mdworker 8685 txt quicklook 8822 13r quicklook 8822 14r any idea what I can do about this? (other than restarting, this happens to me quite a bit), I'm wondering if this could be a bug as well. Thanks for any help.

• Can't install Parallels Tools on Debian 7.2.0

  (Parallels Desktop 9, latest version) As per instructions, I switch to root: $ su - root $ whoami root $ echo $EUID 0 and then execute the installer: $ cd /media/cdrom0 $ ./install and I get this error: sudo: unable to execute ./install: Permission denied What? I'm root! What's with this? I double check to make sure the execute bit is set: $ ls -lA | grep install$ -r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 17284 Oct 25 09:22 install Yep. People online are saying that you need to drag the install script to the terminal after typing sudo. So I do that, and this command is what's formed: $ sudo '/media/cdrom0/install' sudo: unable to execute /media/cdrom0/install: Permission denied What's the solution here?

• Internal+external interfaces with multiple default gateways on win2003

  Im trying to set up several web servers for a load balanced cluster and need to have each server connected to the internal network (for load balancing) as well as to an external network (internet - for administration). I have two NICs but since I cant set two default gateways I have the external gateway as default and the internal as a route rule. This setup only works half way - the internal network is fine but I cant log in from outside or see the web from the box. If I switch the gateways remote login/web will work, but the internal wont. Im sure someone encountered this before but wasnt able to find anything online. Any help will be appreciated.

• How to sync a folder on a remote computer to a server on a domain

  We have a small remote office that often share data with us. I learned that the data is shared as a email attachment, but that obviously leads to versioning hell and overriding. I am looking for a way for then to synchronize a folder directly on our main office domain controller. I personally use LiveMesh, but I would like a tool that is synchronized to our server directly without a 3rd party hosting the data, since we already have an online backup service taking care of the offsite backup. What enterprise class tool would let us synchronize a folder from a remote computer that is out of our domain, into our the file server of our domain? The synchronization has to be two-way, e.g.: Someone from the remote office will create an invoice. Someone from our office will review it and make modification to it. The remote office need to see the change. Our server is on Windows 2003.

  As a Software Engineer we had a lot of discussion on SE design. Although we sync every document on the development process on Google Doc, mind map just didn’t fit in Google doc yet. The best we can do is to store a copy and share it online. To me, Mind map is an ir-replaceable piece of tools (yet) as agile note taking tools. • How to truly sync files on Windows 7 so Dropbox notices the changes

  I want a file on my hard drive in Windows 7 to sync to my public dropbox folder. I can do this with: mklink /H "c:\dropbox\Public\test.txt" "c:\data\test.txt" And the first time after I do this, the file c:\dropbox\Public\test.txt is indeed created, and is available online via http://dl.dropbox.com/u/.../test.txt. And when I update the file c:\data\test.txt then indeed the file c:\dropbox\Public\test.txt reflects the changes, however: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/.../test.txt does not reflect the changes since DropBox somehow doesn't get the information that that file was changed. What is a workaround or another solution to this so that any changes in the original file is also reflected in the dropbox URL link?

• How can I set an account lockout policy for the administrator account on rdp?

  I'm following this page on security tips for RDP (for my online server): http://www.mobydisk.com/techres/securing_remote_desktop.html Now I don't have a special user account for RDP access. Just the administrator can log on. However, I want to make sure that someone can't brute force the password. I've set the 'account lockout policy' to 3 attempts and a retry after 3 minutes. However, when I connect back with RDP I can still try 5 times before RDP breaks the connection. I can then immediately reconnect and try 5 more times. Any ideas if there is a lockout policy which also holds true fro the admin?

• Create an alias in Windows XP

  Back in school, I used to have a .login file along the lines of alias ll = ls -l alias dir = ls -Fhl alias web = cd ~/public/public_www/development ... I'd like to do that sort of thing with my XP box here at work, but most of the resources I've found online seem fairly complicated and heavy-duty. Is there a way to do this that doesn't involve mucking about in the registry or running a large batch file? EDIT: My original reason for asking this was that I only need the command line for one command in one specific folder, and I wanted to be able to get to that folder quickly when I launched the command line. But the accepted answer for this question is so good that I decided to ask about my original issue as a separate question here.

• Hyper-V causes boot loop/failure on a non-Gigabyte Win8 Pro system

  Hardware: Intel i7 2600K (not overclocked, SLAT compatible, virt. features enabled in bios) Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z (Z68) 16Gb RAM 256Gb SSD Other non-trivial working parts Adding Hyper-V is causing a boot loop resulting in an attempt at automatic repair by Windows 8 after the second or third loop: I'm trying to get the Windows Phone 8 SDK installed and I've narrowed down my troubles to the Hyper-V feature in Win8. This is required to run the WP8 emulator and there are no install options to omit this feature. My first attempt completely borked the OS as I did not have a recent restore point or system image, so I did a completely clean install and made plenty of backups/restore points. I skipped the SDK install and went straight for the windows feature add-on for Hyper-V. This confirmed that Hyper-V is the issue as the same behavior resulted. I cannot find any hint in the Event Logs. Cancelling automatic recovery causes the same behavior to repeat. I don't have any other VM products installed. My only recourse is to use a restore point, try something else, install it again, and see what happens. No luck so far. I'm on my 10th attempt here. Any help would be much appreciated. I've tried setting 'CPUID Limit' to disabled. This seems to work partly as Win8 boots but no USB devices work at all. I also attempted disabling the usb 3.0 controller as the msdn topic lists an issue with USB controllers on Gigabyte boards. This also doesn't work. The USB devices light up but no input is received by the OS. All of my other bios CPU settings are in line with the info in the post. I'm totally stumped. • I can't launch any Win8 apps after upgrading to Windows 8.1

  I just upgraded to 8.1 and now none of the Metro apps start. The issue is that if I start any metro app, including the Store and PC Settings they immediately fail. The classic desktop is fine, as are standard programs, it's just the metro apps. If I look in the system event log I see errors like this: *Activation of application winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store failed with error: This application does not support the contract specified or is not installed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.* In addition the tiles in metro have a small cross icon on them: I suspect that my Live ID (which I somehow managed to skip during update) is not set properly and consequently none of the online stuff works. But how do I fix this? I can't start PC settings, I can't start store. I see no way in the classic desktop of setting these things. I don't want to have to reinstall for this. Is there a simple fix?

• Convert RAID-0 to RAID-1 on HP ML350G6 with P410i zero memory

  I have an HP ML350 G6 with a P410i zero memory RAID controller. As far as I can understand that means I can't expand a current single drive "RAID-0" configuration to a RAID-1 using the HP Offline ACU without installing memory and BBWC. Is that correct? What makes me think about this is the fact that expanding RAID-0 to RAID-1 should be pretty similar to replacing a failed drive in an already existing RAID-1? So then why can't I expand without memory and BBWC? Is my best option otherwise to (i) use Ghost to capture the disk, create a new RAID-1 with the existing drive and a new one or (ii) buy memory+BBWC and do it online? Thanks

  I am using Windows 7 and I am looking for a list of the different parameters to use in the Target line of a shortcut in Windows Explorer. For example: /n forces it to open a new window, even if it duplicates a window that is already open. /e uses Windows Explorer view (multi-paned) /root,X restricts Explorer to showing only the contents of file folder X (and its sub-folders) /select,Y automatically selects Y (either a file or folder). What other parameters exist? I have been searching online and cannot find anything.

  I'm trying to get a list of all computers that have a bit locker recovery key (or information for that matter) populated in their respective fields in AD. I am unable to even start on a script as I don't know where to begin. • Cascading switches: uplink to uplink?

  I'm a bit confused as to why I haven't seen any references online to using Switch A's uplink port (1Gbps, 24-port 10/100) to connect to Switch B's uplink port: everything I've seen -- including documentation, forums, articles, etc. -- has Switch A's uplink port going to one of Switch B's 10/100 access ports. As I understand it, the Uplink port (besides greater speed normally) is no different than another port except that it's "internally crossed-over" so that you can use a straight cable with it. I've also seen documentation on using the uplink port to connect a switch to a gateway router, or even a server, as it provides greater bandwidth than the access ports, but yet not sure why nobody seems to be cross-uplinking, even when there's 2 uplink ports available on some higher-end switches. Switch in question is Linksys SRW224P (x2). Am I missing something?

• Dell Vostro 1520 Unable to Read Compact Flash Card with Adapter?

  I Purchased the Dell Vostro 1520 a few months ago and recently tried using a PCMCIA adapter for the Compact Flash card my camera uses. I can't get the laptop to find the card. Tried going online to see if a CF card should work, but have not found a clear or definate answer. I do not want to deal with Dell on the phone as even 800 #'s cost me more than it's worth to use. Hoping someone can let me know if I'm wasting my time trying to get the laptop to read my CF card. • After upgrading to Mac OS X Lion, I can't boot Windows anymore

  I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion and I can't run the installed Windows anymore. It seems the issue is that the Lion installation created extra partitions so the Windows partition has a different number one. It's disk0s4 instead of disk0s3 (if I recall correctly). Searching online found several discussions about it but only one with a proposed solution, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3199099, essentially: bootrec.exe /FixMbr bootrec.exe /FixBoot bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd which didn't work. bootrec.exe /FixBoot claims that no windows partition has been found.

• How can I fix puppet refusing to start and asking for "master.pp"?

  I'm using the very latest version of puppet and have been following the Apress "Pro Puppet" guide step by step. I have installed puppet sudo aptitude install ruby libshadow-ruby1.8 sudo aptitude install puppet puppetmaster facter I have edited /etc/puppet/puppet.conf to include certname [master] certname=puppet.mydomain.com I have edited /etc/hosts and added the following line 127.0.0.1 puppet.mydomain.com puppet I have set the hostname of the server echo "puppet.mydomain.com" > /etc/hostname hostname -F /etc/hostname And then I try and run puppet from the command line. puppet master --verbose --no-daemonize And puppet gives me this error: Could not parse for environment production: Could not find file /master.pp I'm running all commands with sudo and the last line of the error message always says that it can't find master.pp and the path before it is to my current working directory. What am I doing wrong? I should also mention that I don't have a DNS record set up for puppet.mydomain.com - I saw some online documentation mentioning this might be a problem - however I was fairly sure that the hosts file would let me get around that.

  First of all I apologize for my poor understanding of network and I hope I used the correct terminology for everything: I have bought a domain name with 1&1 to create an online shop, using kingeshop. I followed the steps explains here to point the domain name to kingeshop IP address and everything is working fine. Now I would also like to use my domain name to create an email account. But 1&1 seems to say they're not responsible for this now the DNS is transfered to kingeshop's. What I'm wondering is who is really "in charge" of my domain name now? 1&1 also lets me configure the MX-record but I don't have a clue what I can do with this. Could I just use an existing gmail address somehow? Thanks a lot for any help or clarity you can bring me on that matter!

• I just ordered 70/10 line, and need a new router I think?

  Before I had the 25/5 line and the n standard router did just fine. Now it doesn't do the job. Online speedtest reads at 82 so I have the line. But my laptop is getting less than 30 in my room.   I want to put some of my own technical writing on the web: tutorials, how-to's, conceptual articles about programming etc. I write mostly for myself yet, but think others can benefit from it so I want to put it online, and I also have plans of making everything more coherent and turning it into a book. My articles are not meant as a blog, they're just meant as a collection of tutorials and how-to's, but I think a blog-type software would probably be the most appropriate mode of formatting that kind of stuff. Right now I am using the blog feature of cite u like, which is very low tech and I really need something better. On my wish list is, among other things: code snippets in scrollable boxes syntax highlighting for source code snippets tagging articles with graphical icons according to topic, like in slashdot of course users (i.e. readers) should be able to comment on articles Also, just more options than a super-simple blog should look slick! should not look wikipedia-like Is there any software you can recommend for this purpose?

• Keeping packages on a large number of openSUSE servers updated

  Question for anyone out there managing a network of openSUSE machines. How do you keep track of and apply updates? I know about YaST Online Update (YOU) but it seems more geared towards keeping a single machine up to date. It doesn't seem to scale well to a larger number of machines. How do you keep your machines updated? Our network is fairly heterogenous in terms of package installation as the servers are mostly infrastructure machines with varying roles. I know that SUSE Linux Enterprise has tools to manage updates network-wide, but updating to that is currently not an option for budget reasons.

• Hosting 3 domains on 3 PC (1 domain per PC) with only 1 static IP address

  Hey all i am trying to figure this out here. I have 3 PC's that are hooked into my router which i have a static IP for. I am currently hosting a web site (ex: blah1.com) on the 1st PC but have yet to connect PC 2 and 3 up to the network. That one PC thats online is using port 77. I direct all 80 traffic to port 77 using that servers IP address (192.168.x.xxx) My question is, how can i direct traffic for my other 2 domains (ex: blah2.com and blah3.com) to the 2 individual PC's (ip's) as i already am doing with the 1st PC if i can only use one port 80 to direct taffic to the website in?

• Using a Custom Domain Name In Place of etsy

  I am thinking about creating an online shop at etsy, the one requirement I have is, I want user to see my domain name (www.myname.com), instead of myname.etsy.com. Given that I don't have access to the etsy server, is there thing I can do on my domain redirect( assuming I am using apache), so that whatever request on www.myname.com will be translated to the etsy side? This is so that whoever comes to my website won't see the word etsy in the url. Another particular thing is that I want my custom domain name to show in the web browser location bar when the redirect completes. Is there anyway to do this with apache?
