Incorporating GPL Code in my Open Source Project

I have downloaded a currently inactive GPL project with a view to updating it and releasing the completed codebase as open source. I'm not really a fan of GPL though and would rather licence my project under BSD. What are my options? Is it just a case of keeping any existing non-touched code under the GPL and any updated stuff can be BSD (messy)? The source will essentially be the same codebase i.e. there is no logical separation between the two and they certainly can't be split into anything resembling different libraries. Are my only realistic options to either GPL the whole thing or seek the original author's permission to release everthing under BSD?

cannot install build essential from Ubuntu 10.10 cd

after a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 i tried to install build-essential from the Ubuntu installation CD. I put the cd in the cdrom and in the software repositories i checked the box install from cd(Ubuntu 10.10 release Maverick Meerkat). Then i reloaded the software repositories. The synaptic manager then tried to download some repository related files but failed to do so as i didn't have internet connection. Then i open a terminal and wrote "sudo apt-get install build-essential". It prompted me if i want to install build essential y/N. I typed y but the terminal showed some errors and was not installed. I also tried to add the CD in the software repositories. I clicked add and it prompted me to insert a CD while the CD was still inside the cdrom. I clided "ok" then and it showed it could not find any cd. What is wrong ?

How to disable DisplayInfo for Intel i810 when there is no xorg.conf

I'm testing Ubuntu 12.04 on an office desktop. This machine has an integrated Intel i810. This very machine used to run Ubuntu (or kubuntu) quite well, until the natty narwhal release, when the xserver started freezing. This seems to be caused by an issue with a call to the video bios, which can be circumvented by disabling the option DisplayInfo. I tried creating an xorg.conf by using Xorg -configure, but it produced an error after trying to make a file. I did have a file, and I put it in /etc/X11 with DisplayInfo false (maybe it wants "disabled"?), but it wouldn't boot at all until I removed that xorg.conf. There is no 10-monitor.conf file either. All I want to do is set the appropriate option so that my intel display doesn't freeze. Is there any other way I can disable the DisplayInfo? Andrew

81% of European Shoppers Willing to Pay More for Better Customer Experience

Customer Experience provides strategic driver for business growth Research released today from Oracle has revealed that customer experience is now a key driver for revenue growth in Europe, and an effective channel for brand differentiation in a globalized economy where products and services are increasingly commoditized. The research report, “Why Customer Satisfaction is No Longer Good Enough,” reveals that 81% of consumers surveyed are willing to pay more for superior customer experience. With nearly half (44%) willing to pay a premium of more than 5%. Improvement of the overall customer experience (40%), providing quick access to information and making it easier for customers to ask questions (35%) were cited as key drivers for spending more with a brand. The pan-European research, carried out in June 2012 by independent research company Loudhouse, surveyed 1400 online shoppers (50% female, 50% male) who had made a complaint or enquiry to a customer service department in the last 12 months. New Office 2010 theme added for creating current UIs

Why do software patches have to be accepted by a developer?

In open source projects, why do software patches have to be accepted by a developer? Couldn't contributors just release their own patches and allow people to add the patch if they choose to. I'm wondering why there are so many Ubuntu programs that could use such obvious work but aren't updated. For instance, lots of people want Rhythmbox to be more attractive. Why can't the people who design themes on DeviantArt turn those into code and let users download those themes themselves, even if the developers at Rhythmbox won't accept different themes?

The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do

Simplifying ASP.NET Demos By Switching Web Server

A Virtual(Box) Christmas!

Hello and merry Christmas everybody!Yes. This year, it's a v4.0 Xmas! VirtualBox just came out with a new major version release. Version 4.0 is available at : http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads ... and of course, it's open source, and it's free. And I suggest (strongly) that you also download the free Extension Pack from the same page... Brings USB 2.0 emulation and more!I upgraded the version on my Solaris Express (get that from : http://www.oracle.com/solaris/index.html and follow the Download Solaris Express link on the right) laptop (pfexec pkgrm SUNWvbox and then pfexec pkgadd -d the .pkg in the compressed archive file, and install the extensions from the VBox GUI once it's launched). If you are on an old fashion OS without proper RBAC, replace pfexec by sudo. Which you can also do on Solaris if you really want to. :)I tell you, it's Christmas, for sure!Merry VBox!Gilles.

The Value Matrix evaluates CRM vendors on functionality and usability which they consider the core indicators in an application’s ability to deliver initial ROI and value over time. Oracle Fusion CRM is in the “Leader” quadrant. CRM On Demand enters the “Leader” quadrant with the release of version 20 delivering continued investment in Oracle CRM On Demand. Oracle Siebel CRM is in the “Expert” quadrant. RightNow continues to be placed in the “Facilitator” quadrant. Is it a good idea to appoint one of the scrum team member or scrum master as Product Owner?

Lately we had a project, in which client was busy touring. As usual scrum team was formed, management decided to appoint our analyst as Product owner since Client won’t be able to participate actively. Analyst was the one who worked closely with client for requirement analysis and specification drafting. Client doesn’t have the time to review first two releases. Everything went smoothly until, client saw third release; he wasn’t satisfied with some functionalities, and those was introduced by make shift Product Owner (our analyst). We were told to wait till design team finished mock-up of all pages and client checked each one and approved to continue working. Scrum team is there, but no sprints – we finished work almost like classic waterfall method. Is it a good idea to appoint scrum team member or master as product owner? Do we need to follow scrum in the absence of client/product owner participation?
