• Dell Latitude E6430 Docking Station + Dual Monitor + Laptop Screen Tri-Monitor setup

  I have a company issued laptop and docking station as well as two monitors The specifications of the hardware are as follows; Laptop: Latitude E6430 BIOS: A02.00 Processor: i7-3720QM CPU @ 2.60 (8 CPUs) Memory: 4096MB RAM Page file: 1825MB used, 4793MB available DirectX 11 Display Driver/Chip: MVIDIA NVS 5200M DAC: Integrated RAMDAC Aprox Total Memory: 2376 (Above 3 details same for both displays) Current Display Mode (Display 1): 1600x900 Current Display Mode (Display 2): 1440x900 the docking station is a Dell Latitude E6420 Docking Station PR03X Port Replicator and I don't think the monitor model is particularly relevant to resolving this issue but they are both Acer V193Ws The story goes like this; the laptop works fine if I VGA one monitor into the laptop through the vga port on the back of the lefthand side of the laptop I can achieve dual monitor display fine (laptop screen + monitor) if I plug the laptop into the docking station and use the vga port in the back of the docking station I can dual monitor fine (laptop screen + monitor) if I plug the laptop into the docking station, the laptop's lefthand side VGA port no longer seems to function at all I've spoken to internal IT about this issue and they're going to get me some kind of VGA splitter or a DVI-VGA adapter to use with the docking station for the second Acer Monitor, but that isn't going to happen for a few days. So I guess what I'm wondering is; is there any way to continue to use the side VGA port on my laptop while using the docking station VGA port? and as a secondary 'followup' pending resolution of the initial issue with getting both monitors up and running (at the moment I have both monitors on my desk but am just using my laptop screen as one of my dual monitor display with one of the monitors [the one connected to dock]), is there any way to CONTINUE to use my laptop monitor to in effect have a triple monitor display (2 monitors + docked laptop)? I am wondering this because internal IT told me that they were aware of some issues with the particular display drivers in my box and triple monitor displays but weren't really going to look TOO much in-depth into that (which is perfectly understandable) since getting the adapter for the dual monitors up and running was the greater priority within their purview. So this is a two parter; Can I dual monitor using two vga cables with 1 docking station vga port and one laptop vga port? is there a setting that can be tweaked somewhere? because plugging the box into the station seems to make the side port stop working and... Is there any reasonably simple and cost-effective work around (e.g. I am find with shelling out maybe a few dollars out of my own pocket for some hardware or software to make my company box tri-display capable) but if this requires some extensive rebuild or new OSs or doing stuff to the BIOS I'd rather have a straight answer about this being untenable as a slight modification to a (once again) company laptop and stop wasting time looking into it Thanks! and please let me know if you guys need any more details (tech specs or something) to answer this question [EDIT] 2/10/2014 Just an update; turned out it really was just a hardware limitation issue. The old laptop just couldn't hack it. However this one uses the php library tonic (RESTful webservices) and makes us of php cURL module. The issue is I'm not getting an error message which makes it impossible to find the issue. I am now stuck at a point where my new Ubuntu/VirtualBox VM hangs after the message "Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done" during boot. I started by installing Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 LTS on a VirtualBox VM. Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 LTS was the closest "official" Ubuntu ISO to the Proxmox container OS I could find. I installed all updates on both the Proxmox container and on the VirtualBox VM. The idea was to get same version kernal running on the ProxMox container and VirtualBox VM. sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get upgrade ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo reboot rsync the entire proxmox container to a temporary directory in the VirtualBox VM: cd / mkdir /tmp/backup rsync -e ssh -av --exclude={/dev,/proc,/sys,/tmp,/run,/mnt,/media,/lost+found,/boot,/selinux} root@my_proxmox_container_hostname:/ /tmp/backup Shut down the virtual machine, and boot the VM with a bootable linux image. I used the Desktop image of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, ubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-i386.iso Drop to a root prompt. Mount the VM root filesystem: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt Remove files from most of /mnt cd /mnt sudo rm -rf bin etc home lib opt sbin root usr var Move all of the files from /mnt/backup into /mnt sudo mv /mnt/tmp/backup/* /mnt Rebooted system. For me, at this point the system freezes after starting, after the message: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done I've tried reinstalling GRUB and all manner of other thing. I am almost ready to give up.

• Intermittent Windows Server 2008 BSOD and restart

  Our EC2 Instance (Windows Server 2008) crashed multiple times for the past 3 months (last time was today at 1:05 EST). Upon reviewing MEMORY.DMP file we noticed that possible cause of the crashes is rhelnet.sys (RedHat PV NIC Driver). Server's Event Viewer has the following records right after the crash: Critical - Kernel Power: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. BugCheck: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x000000000000002d, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff88001402d14). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 100113-35849-01. Could this be a hardware issue? Would it help if we stop and start the instance? Or is this more likely that this is caused by the software running on the system? [Update 10.01.2013] Amazon Rep suggested to update RH drivers to Citrix PV drivers on our instance: Upgrading PV Drivers [Update 10.08.2013] We performed a drivers upgrade on the cloned instance. Right after the upgrade we noticed the following errors in our Event viewer: Xennet6 errors in Event Viewer (Event ID# 5001) After digging a bit more I found this article suggesting to install the latest Citrix drivers. Unfortunately, this didn't help us at all and our cloned instance became unresponsive. [Update 10.08.2013 2] I recreated an instance and updated PV drivers again. After searching on Internet I found this article where Amazon Rep explains that: "Event ID 5001 from source Xennet6 cannot be found" message does not indicate anything wrong, just that the PV driver is looking for a feature that we have not implemented in our version of Xen. I will keep my test system running for a while to see if there any issues with it.

• How to mount a LOFS in Solaris that doesn’t cross mountpoints

  I need to access my "root" ZFS dataset to delete a file under "/var". But "/var" is overlayed by another ZFS dataset. Since these are system datasets I can't "umount" them while the machine is running. And I want to avoid to reboot the system in "failsafe" mode, since this is a production machine. Teorically ZFS would refuse to mount "/var" dataset over the underlying "/var", because it is not empty. But it works, possibly because they are system datasets mounted early in the boot process. But having the underlying "/var" not empty is preventing me to create an ABE (Alternate Boot Environment), so patching is risky, and I can't upgrade my system using Live Upgrade. The machine is remote. I have an IP KVM, but I rather prefer to avoid booting this machine in "failsafe" mode, if I can. I know there is a file in "/var/" because I can snapshot the "root" dataset and check it. But snapshots are read-only, so I can't get rid of the file. I tried "mkdir /tmp/zzz; mount -F lofs / /tmp/zzz", but when I go to "/tmp/zzz/var", I see the "/var" dataset, not the underlying "root" dataset. That is, the LOFS is crossing mountpoints. I would usually like it, but not this time!. Any suggestion, beside rebooting the machine in "failsafe" and mess with it thru the IP KVM?

• OpenSSL support for Ruby: "Cipher is not a module (TypeError)"

  The Problem Our systems admin needed to upgrade the packages on our CentOS 5.4 dev server to match the packages on our production server. The upgrade affected ruby and/or openssl. We run a Ruby on Rails issue tracking system called Redmine that is deployed with Passenger on Apache. Everything worked before the server update, but when trying to access the ticket system now, I get the following error: Error message: Cipher is not a module Exception class: TypeError Application root: /home/dev/rails/redmine-0.8.7 I've been trying so hard to fix this problem but I can't seem to beat it. I have tried following this guide: http://iamclovin.posterous.com/how-to-solve-the-cipher-is-not-a-module-error When I try require 'openssl' in IRB, I do see a true return value. However, I'm still seeing the Cipher.rb is not a module TypeError when accessing the ticket system. Possibly (probably) related: I've tried updating Passenger, but when I try passenger-install-apache2-module I see: Checking for required software... * GNU C++ compiler... found at /usr/bin/g++ * Ruby development headers... found * OpenSSL support for Ruby... /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/openssl/cipher.rb:22: Cipher is not a module (TypeError) Any help?

• Move sendmail from Fedora 1 to a different server ( fedora 12)

  We have a sendmail server that also works as DHCP, DNS, and a gateway to our ISP. It has three network interfaces, one for our ISP ( static IP) and the other two is for LANS on different subnet. The hardware is quite old and we've been experiencing downtime due to hardware failures, so we have decided to upgrade the hardware and while at it upgrade the linux OS to Fedora 12. Were trying to do this with minimal downtime. We are planning to take these steps. Install New OS (Fedora 12) on the new server with 3 network interfaces. Install DHCP, BIND, Sendmail, SpamAssassin, MailScanner, Dovecot, Squirrelmail on the new server. Transfer settings from the old server to the new server. ( This is the hardest part that we know). For DHCP and DNS, we can just copy the dhcp leases and conf file and everything should work right? How do we go about moving the users/email accounts from the old server to the new one? • zfs setup question

  Currently I have a linux storage box and server with 4x750gb harddrives in raid-5 with ext3. I have ordered 3x1.5tb disks to upgrade this. Here is my planned upgrade: Backup: Format the 1.5 tb disks Copy all data from the raid-5 disks to the 1.5tb disks Destroy the raid-5 array. New setup: Create a VirtualBox system and install Nexenta (OpenSolaris + ubuntu) on it. Create a zfs pool with zraid1 with the 4 750gb disks. Copy from 1.5tb disks to the virtualbox zfs pool Format the 1.5tb disks. Replace 3 off the 750gb disks with 1.5tb disks. Reuse the 750gb disks elsewhere. The reason I wish to use one 750gb disk is since I can't grow the disk count in a raidz array, and this gives me the option off replacing that disk later for an extra 750gb storage. Would the ZFS performance be good running through virtualbox? Or will the performance overhead be too large? Will I get 1.5tb+1.5tb+750gb storage on the zraid? Or just 750gbx3 until all disks are 1.5tb?

• Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0 on Windows 7 print to network share gives error

  I've recently upgraded a client's workstations to brand new computers, with Windows 7 Professional. The server is still Windows Server 2003. The server has 2-3 file shares that get mapped to users' workstations as drives. The client has also upgraded from Acrobat 6.0 to 9.0 Pro. Since the upgrade, when the client tries to print to the Adobe PDF printer (aka convert something to PDF via the printer interface), it gives an error in the queue if the file is being saved on the network drive. If I instead provide a local path, the file "prints" fine. Additionally, if I change the Adobe PDF printer's settings to "don't spool, print directly to printer", it prints to the network share fine, but then it resets that setting every time. Things I've checked for: Permissions on the network share. The user and the computer has full access. We even gave the "Everyone" ibject full access. Reinstall Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0 Run updates to upgrade to 9.3.4 Has anyone else bumped into such a problem? The support fellows from Adobe are just taking me around in circles. They don't seem to have a clue either.

• Network cabling with multiple patch panels?

  I am in the very early stages of planning a network cabling upgrade in our office, mainly to upgrade the old cables from Cat5 to either 5e or 6. I am also planning on upgrading all of our 10/100 switches to 10/100/1000 switches. I would like to have three small wall mounted cabinets spread around the building, each with a patch panel and switch. These would all lead back to our server room. The question is; should I have two patch panels in each wall cabinet, one with 24 or 48 ports that are connected to a matching patch panel in the server room. The second patch panel would then link to each device in that cabinets area. Then I wouldn't put a switch in the small cabinets. All switching would be done in the server room. Or, should I have one main cable from the server room to each of the cabinets - plugged straight into the switch and the patch panel is for devices in the cabinets area? I hope that makes sense!

• Dell Studio 17 - turning off suddenly

  I have a Dell Studio 17 laptop, a refurbished model almost 2 years old...It is currently running Windows 7 32-bit, Home Premium. Via a clean install, it is a Vista upgrade machine...A while back, a problem started to develop while running Vista that it would suddenly just turn off. No warnings, messages, anything. It was like I had the battery out, then just unplugged it from the wall. Just like that. Over several months of this happening (or more), I've observed several things...First, it only seems to happen when I'm doing memory-intensive things, such as watching a online video full screen or running many applications in the background...Second, I can tell when it is about to "flip" as I've termed it, when the fan starts running...the computer gets really hot in places... Anyways, I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem, because it still exists, even after a Vista-to-7 Upgrade...Is this true? Hardware vs. software? Is there anything I can do to fix this? Is it just a specific component or what? What do you recommend? Thanks!!

The reason I want it on the former machine is because it is mounted on a different file system. Lastly they tell me that all software the Apache webserver runs will need to be reinstalled/recompiled (assuming an Apache upgrade WAS needed). I am not even sure about this. Are they full of it? • Configuring suExec to work with Apache and PHP via FastCGI

  I have installed ISPConfig 3 on an Ubuntu VPS and configured it for Apache + PHP via FastCGI and suexec. I am able to upload PHP apps (e.g. Wordpress) and run them normally w/ suexec. However, for some reason the PHP scripts cannot write data to disk. For instance, trying to upgrade a plugin via Wordpress' web interface causes it to fail with the error "Could not create directory /path/to/wp-content/upgrade/plugin.tmp." Trying to upload media and other assets also fails via the web. I've checked owner/group on the directory structure and it looks good. The suExec log also seems to be normal and I don't see any indicative errors in the web server logs. I can also confirm that changing the owner/group on the directories does result in the expected error in suexec.log. Additionally, I have the directory permissions set to u=rw,g=r,o= and I've also tried setting g=rw. None of this results in my scripts being able to write to the directories. What am I doing wrong?
