• Incremental backup up from a remote ftp box to a Windows server

  I need to backup a website to a Windows server every week and I only have access to remote FTP. I'd like to use an incremental backup program so that I can just copy the files every week on a schedule and not worry too much about the size of the backups becoming an issue. Unfortunately, I can't find a Windows program that will automatically make incremental backups of specific FTP folders and files, as most programs are designed to backup to FTP, not from it. Are there any applications that can do this? I also have a Ubuntu 10.04 box I could use to relay the site to the Windows server if I needed to run Linux programs, but I would prefer a Windows-only solution over a Linux/Windows one, and a combined Linux/Windows solution over not having it work at all.

  Hi, I've used dd to clone hard drives before using 'dd' and a live cd, but have run into a problem. The issue: dd fails with an "Input/Output Error" on /dev/sda3 , even though windows "check disk" (chkdsk) says it's ok. Context: Trying to replace my laptop hard drive w/ a faster one of the same size Laptop has NTFS on a 320gb hard drive Booting into knoppix Knoppix recognizes 'original' drive (/dev/sda) I am using a usb connection for ‘new' drive (irrelevant, but just an fyi) Knoppix recognizes the usb drive as /dev/sdb Using dd, as follows: dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb "dd" gives the I/O error above at 82Gb (out of 320Gb) I then tried checking each partition as follows and found it failed on /dev/sda3: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/null dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/null dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/null I have ran windows xp chkdsk on the offending drive in both "find only" and "find and fix" mode and it reports no errors Question How can I find and fix the error on my original hard drive partition (i.e. /dev/sda3) so that dd reads it successfully?

• How to burn a data DVD in Windows XP

  I am trying to burn a data DVD (DVD+R) in Windows XP SP3 on a Dell desktop computer. The computer has a licensed copy of Nero 6.3. Nero indicates that an update to version 6.6 is available, but after following the link provided, it redirects me to the Nero website to purchase the upgrade. I'm not interested in doing this. After creating a project in Nero 6.3, inserting a blank DVD+R and trying to start burning the data DVD, Nero indicates that I should insert an appropriate disk into the drive. It does not seem to detect the blank DVD+R. I downloaded infrarecorder and cdrtfe from Sourceforge. Neither of these programs worked either. They both indicated that I should insert the correct media, with cdrtfe saying there is no disk in the drive. I tried with another blank DVD +R with the same effect. I inserted a CDR containing data into the drive and the Windows read read this CDR without a problem. I have no reason to believe that the drive is faulty. I am aware that Windows XP itself is not able to burn DVDs. However, it seems that three third-party software programs are not able to burn a data DVD in Window XP. The specifications provided in Nero indicate that DVD+R is compatible with the drive. How can I burn a backup data DVD in Windows XP?

• Windows 8 - Ubuntu dual boot

  I bought a new Toshiba s855 notebook with windows 8 preinstalled. Secure boot feature was enabled by default. I installed latest version of ubuntu after disabling secure boot feature(it was not possible to install ubuntu without disabling secure boot). But now when I enable secure boot, the system automatically boots into windows 8, and it boots into ubuntu when I disable secure boot. EasyBCD lists the following boot entries but I can only see Windows 8 in boot menu: Default: Windows 8 Timeout: 7 seconds EasyBCD Boot Device: C:\ Entry #1 Name: Ubuntu BCD ID: {971641cd-304a-11e2-be82-806e6f6e6963} Device: \Device\HarddiskVolume2 Bootloader Path: \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi ... When I boot up now, I get the black screen with BCD error that says theres no valid file system or it may be corrupt (pardon my lack of detail, no copy/paste is available then). When I boot with the Windows 7 disc and go into repair tools, no operating system is found, and attempting to automatically repair the problem fails with Unknown Operating System (Unknown Disk) or something similar. When I drop into the command prompt, I am able to see and navigate my C:\ drive without issue. I attempt to use bootrec: C:\> bootrec /ScanOS Finds C:\Windows as a system partition. C:\> bootrec /RebuildBCD Fails with volume does not contain a recognized file system. please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. So then I attempt to fix the bootsector: C:\> bootsect /nt60 C: /force Which completes successfully (sorry, no output..) Upon rebooting, I have the same problem. I've also tried all of the above after making my Windows partition active: C:\> diskpart DISKPART> select disk 1 DISKPART> select partition 1 DISKPART> active DISKPART> exit Then bootrec as above, both with and without a reboot after the DISKPART commands. • My iPhone is stuck at screen with USB cable and iTunes logo

  I just tried updating the iPhone's firmware, and things went haywire. iTunes informed the update had failed and linked me to this page. The iPhone is stuck on the image from the top of that page. I held down the sleep and home buttons until it turned off and turned it back on, and then went through the iPhone's 'restore' mode. It then error'd again and I'm stuck back with the logos on the iPhone. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

• What causes Windows Boot to stall?

  For about 6 months now I have been having this weird problem where Windows 7 fails to fully boot correctly. What happens is this. Starting Windows shows up on the screen. Then 3 out of 4 times nothing else happens, no Windows Flag animation, just nothing occurs. After 3 or 4 restarts repeating steps 1-2 above, the Windows Flag animation finally shows up and everything works as expected. My question is what is causing this problem in steps 1 and 2? Because I have tried the following with no luck: Error checking and correcting of any disk errors Updating drivers Doing a clean install of Windows 7 My setup is as follows: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate 8 GB RAM 128 GB Crucial SSD (firmware 0005) Dell Latitude E6410 Intel Wireless and Graphics Other than what I have tried above I am totally out of ideas and looking for some new ones to try.

  My Windows 7 just restarts without giving me a BSOD. When it reboots, it will hang sometimes and you have to let it rest. Sometimes it will print a message saying that Hal.dll is missing or corrupt. When it does restart I can't run a backup or a clone drive – it comes up with constant errors. I tried to run chkdsk – it says everything's clean. What is really puzzling is SyncToy on a different drive hangs half way through and won't run either. Machine: OCZ SSD Agility 2 for C drive SATA HDD for programs, documents on D drive MSI AMD 880 chipset Event viewer says something about critical power failure I/O operations and "Event ID 14 volsnap" – but that is just telling me the computer powered off which I already know.

It has 3 drives C Drive: 80GB SDD Drive P Drive: 120GB SDD (for core programs) D Drive: 1TB SDD (for data and other) I have an MSDN subscription and I am the type of person that loves to install tons of software to check it out. I am very worried that installation programs are forcing me to place a large amount of files on the small C drive. I fear that I will quickly run out of space on my C drive while having ample space on my TB drive. What would you do in my shoes? I didn't select this PC or set the config up. I am wishing that the 120 SSD was my C, to give me a little more room to grow. I guess there are no magic solutions here but I am just looking for your general thoughts

• How do I record sound from my CD/DVD player without other system sounds in the mix?

  Using GoldWave I can record via the "Stereo Mix" channel, but I get no sound on the "CD" channel. Of course, using the stereo mix also mixes in all system sounds, including beeps, etc. I have the analog out on the DVD player connected to the CD-IN connector on the MoBo. I can hear CDs and DVDs playing just fine through my speakers - is this because the CD is also IDE data connection in to deliver the sound to the sound card, then? I specifically want to record a DVD; I can easily rip a CD using GoldWave's built-in ripper. Is there anything I have forgotten or have to enable? Or is it likely I have a damaged cable? My system is an MSI mobo and is running Windows XP SP3.

  Windows 7 won't reconnect to my network drives on startup. Once it is done booting opening Windows Explorer and clicking each share will mount them. Windows 7 Enterprise N Service Pack 1 I have attempted formatting the windows machine - first thing done to machine was to map the network drives, upon reboot they were disconnected. It is running on an Crucial M4 64gb SSD. The host of the network shares is a Ubuntu-Server machine connected through a gigabit switch. A modem provides dhcp, although both these machines have static IP's defined. It won't reconnect the drives regardless of whether they're SAMBA shares or NFS shares - therefore I believe it's an issue with the windows machine. Ubuntu 11.10 (GNU/Linux 3.0.0-12-server x86_64) I've tried using ip address instead of netbios name for mapping shares on the windows machine, Also tried setting EnableLinkedConnections=1 gpedit.msc Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System-Logon - always wait for the network at computer startup and logon = yes

When they insert a camera memory card into their printer, the Auto-Play dialog comes up, but it also launches the HP Photosmart Essential application, which is a piece of trash. It will NOT launch properly just normally from the taskbar, so that makes it pretty useless.   Are there any NBD clients for Windows? Strangely, I cannot find any, or I am searching for them in a wrong way. Such client should be possibly a driver with front-end tool (may be a command-line one) allowing to create virtual drives and associate them with given hosts (or simply localhost) and ports where NBD servers are listening. From user perspective virtual drive should be close to what physical drive is, so it should be accessible as something like \\.\PhysicalDriveX (maybe \\.\VirtualDriveX?), be visible in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) and mountvol tools at least. (The only thing I found remotely close to NBD on Windows is ImDisk's proxy mode and companion tool devio, but AFAIK ImDisk only works at partition level (so no virtual drive) and devio uses different protocol.) Secondary question is: Are there any (preferably simple) Windows-specific solutions allowing creation of virtual drive delegating read/write request to user-space via some explicit way (like via TCP, IPC, DLL implementing given API, etc.)?

• Can't open shared drive after disconnecting vpn

  I use a VPN to connect to my office network. On my local network I have another WinXP machine that shares a printer and a few shared folders. While I'm connected to my work VPN, I can access the shared printer and folders on the other machine just fine, and vice versa. Once I disconnect the VPN, I can't access the local machine any more, and the other machine can't access my machine. The network itself seems ok - I can ping the other machine, get to the internet, and get on to a web server shared by the other machine, but I can't get to the shared folders or printer. If I reconnect to the VPN, my access is restored. I'm guessing this is some sort of authentication thing, but I don't know what. Any ideas? Update This problem is bothering me again, so here's an update. Depending on when I first access the WinXP machine, I either have this problem, or the opposite problem. After a reboot, if I (for example) print, then connect to the VPN, I can't access the machine while on the VPN. If after a reboot I connect to the VPN, then print, I can't access the machine off the VPN. In both cases, if I enable/disable the VPN again, I can access the machine again. Thanks
