Integrating Twitter Into An ASP.NET Website

Twitter is a popular social networking web service for writing and sharing short messages. These tidy text messages are referred to as tweets and are limited to 140 characters. Users can leave tweets and follow other users directly from Twitter's website or by using the Twitter API. Twitter's API makes it possible to integrate Twitter with external applications. For example, you can use the Twitter API to display your latest tweets on your blog. A mom and pop online store could integrate Twitter such that a new tweet was added each time a customer completed an order. And ELMAH, a popular open-source error logging library, can be configured to send error notifications to Twitter. Twitter's API is implemented over HTTP using the design principles of Representational State Transfer (REST). In a nutshell, inter-operating with the Twitter API involves a client - your application - sending an XML-formatted message over HTTP to the server - Twitter's website. The server responds with an XML-formatted message that contains status information and data. While you can certainly interface with this API by writing your own code to communicate with the Twitter API over HTTP along with the code that creates and parses the XML payloads exchanged between the client and server, such work is unnecessary since there are many community-created Twitter API libraries for a variety of programming frameworks. Can't login to Manager App in Tomcat 6.0.18

Folks, I can't login to the manager app (localhost:8080/manager/html) in my Tomcat. More specifically, it asks for my username and password, and the ones supposed to be correct aren't accepted. Here's what I already checked: I tried editing my conf/tomcat-users.xml to add my user/role. Here's the current content of this file: <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?> <tomcat-users> <role rolename="manager"/> <user username="tomcat" password="s3cret" roles="manager"/> </tomcat-users> I thought that maybe it wasn't looking up on this XML, but elsewhere. So, I came to know about Realms. The Realm part of my configuration is now: < Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.MemoryRealm" / ( please ignore the space before Realm, for some reason this site isn't accepting the literal tag ) What am I missing?

C# 4.0: Alternative To Optional Arguments

Like I mentioned in my last post, exposing publicly methods with optional arguments is a bad practice (that’s why C# has resisted to having it, until now). You might argument that your method or constructor has to many variants and having ten or more overloads is a maintenance nightmare, and you’re right. But the solution has been there for ages: have an arguments class. The arguments class pattern is used in the .NET Framework is used by several classes, like XmlReader and XmlWriter that use such pattern in their Create methods, since version 2.0: XmlReaderSettings settings = new XmlReaderSettings(); settings.ValidationType = ValidationType.Auto; XmlReader.Create("file.xml", settings); With this pattern, you don’t have to maintain a long list of overloads and any default values for properties of XmlReaderSettings (or XmlWriterSettings for XmlWriter.Create) can be changed or new properties added in future implementations that won’t break existing compiled code. You might now argue that it’s too much code to write, but, with object initializers added in C# 3.0, the same code can be written like this: XmlReader.Create("file.xml", new XmlReaderSettings { ValidationType = ValidationType.Auto }); Looks almost like named and optional arguments, doesn’t it? And, who knows, in a future version of C#, it might even look like this: XmlReader.Create("file.xml", new { ValidationType = ValidationType.Auto });

tfs 2010 RC Agile Process template update New Task progress report

Maybe my next post will just be about why I am so excited and impressed with the out of the box templates. But, for this first blog with my new focus, I thought I would just walk through the process I went through to create a task progress report (to enhance the out of the box Agile template). So, I started with the MSF for Agile Development 5.0 RC template. After reviewing the template, I came away pretty excited about many of the new reports. I am especially excited about the reporting services reports. The big advantage I see here is that these are querying the Warehouse directly instead of the Analysis Services Cube which means that they are much closer to real-time which I find very important for reports like Burndown and task status. One report that I focused on right away was the User Story Progress Report. An overview is shown below: This report is very useful, but a lot of our internal managers really prefer to manage at the task level and either dont have stories in TFS or would like to view this type of report for tasks in addition to the User Stories. So, what did I do? Step 1: Download the Agile Template In VS 2010 RC, open Process Template Manager from Team->Team Project Collection Settings. Download the MSF for Agile Development template to your local file system. A project template is a folder of xml files. There is a ProcessTemplate.xml in the root and then a bunch of directories for things like Work Item Definitions and Queries, Reports, Shared Documents and Source Control Settings. Step 2: Copy the folder My plan here is to make a new template with all of my modifications. You can also just enhance update the MSF template. However, I think it is cleaner when you start making modifications to make your own template. So, copy the folder and name it with your new template name. Step 3: Change Template Name Open ProcessTemplate.xml and change the <name> of the template. Step 4: Copy the rdl of the Report you want to use a starting point In my case, I copied Stories Progress.rdl and named the file Task Progress Breakdown.rdl. I reviewed the requirements for the new report with some of the users here and came up with this plan. Should show tasks and be expandable to show subtasks. Should add Assigned To and Estimated Finish Date as 2 extra columns. Step 5: Walkthrough the existing report to understand how it works The main thing that I do here is try to get the sql to run in SQL Management Studio. So, I can walkthrough the process of building up the data for the report. After analyzing this particular report I found a couple of very useful things. One, this report is already built to display subtasks if I just flip the IncludeTasks flag to 1. So, if you are using Stories and have tasks assigned to each story. This might give you everything you want. For my purposes, I did make that change to the Stories Progress report as I find it to be a more useful report to be able to see the tasks that comprise each story. But, I still wanted a task only version with the additional fields. Step 6: Update the report definition I tend to work on rdl in visual studio directly as xml. Especially when I am just altering an existing report, I find it easier than trying to deal with the BI Studio designer. For my report I made the following changes. Updated Fields Removed Stack Rank and Replaced with Priority since we dont use Stack Rank Added FinishDate and AssignedTo Changed the root deliverable SQL to pull @tasks instead of @deliverablecategory and added a join CurrentWorkItemView for FinishDate and Assigned to SELECT cwi.[System_Id] AS ID FROM [CurrentWorkItemView] cwi WHERE cwi.[System_WorkItemType] IN (@Task) AND cwi.[ProjectNodeGUID] = @ProjectGuid SELECT lh.SourceWorkItemID AS ID FROM FactWorkItemLinkHistory lh INNER JOIN [CurrentWorkItemView] cwi ON lh.TargetWorkItemID = cwi.[System_Id] WHERE lh.WorkItemLinkTypeSK = @ParentWorkItemLinkTypeSK AND lh.RemovedDate = CONVERT(DATETIME, '9999', 126) AND lh.TeamProjectCollectionSK = @TeamProjectCollectionSK AND cwi.[System_WorkItemType] NOT IN (@DeliverableCategory) Added AssignedTo and FinishDate columns to the @Rollups table Added two columns to the table used for column headers <Tablix Name="ProgressTable"> <TablixBody> <TablixColumns> <TablixColumn> <Width>2.7625in</Width> </TablixColumn> <TablixColumn> <Width>0.5125in</Width> </TablixColumn> <TablixColumn> <Width>3.4625in</Width> </TablixColumn> <TablixColumn> <Width>0.7625in</Width> </TablixColumn> <TablixColumn> <Width>1.25in</Width> </TablixColumn> <TablixColumn> <Width>1.25in</Width> </TablixColumn> </TablixColumns> Added Cells for the two new headers Added Cells to the data table to include the two new values (Assigned to & Finish Date) Changed a bunch of widths that would change the format of the report to display landscape and have room for the two additional columns Set the Value of the IncludeTasks Parameter to 1 <ReportParameter Name="IncludeTasks"> <DataType>Integer</DataType> <DefaultValue> <Values> <Value>=1</Value> </Values> </DefaultValue> <Prompt>IncludeTasks</Prompt> <Hidden>true</Hidden> </ReportParameter> Change a few descriptions on how the report should be used This is the resulting report I have attached the final rdl. Step 7: Update ReportTasks.xml Last step before the template is ready for use is to update the reportTasks.xml file in the reports folder. And upload the new template. Thats it. Wrong perspective is showing in Eclipse plugin project [closed]

I am working in Eclipse Modeling Framework (Eclipse plugin development) in my project the tool(project i am working) provides three perspectives. 1.Accelerator Analyst perspective 2.Contract Validation and 3.Underwriter rules Editor... By default it starts with Contract validation perspective (As we define it within the plugin_customization.ini). However after switching to other perspective does not change the perspective shown... As all perspective (Class, Id and Name) is define only inside Plugin.XML as it is the task of org.eclipse.ui.perspective that that perspective name should be come forefront. Out of 10 7 times it is working fine but I am not getting why this is not working in that 3 cases. I have been searching google, Apache Docs*, and FlashPunk forums looking for an answer to this: I cannot get Ant/Flex to find and compile the FlashPunk libraries. Here is my build.xml. VSDB to SSDT part 3 : command-line deployment with SqlPackage.exe, replacement for Vsdbcmd.exe

For our continuous integration needs, we use a powershell script to handle deployment. A simpler approach would be to have a deployment task embedded within the build process. See the solution provided here by Jakob Ehn (a most interesting read which also dives into the '”deploying from Visual Studio” specifics) : http://geekswithblogs.net/jakob/archive/2012/04/25/deploying-ssdt-projects-with-tfs-build.aspx For our needs, though, clearly separating our build phase from our deployment phase is important. It allows us to instantly deploy old versions. Also it is more convenient for continuous integration. So we stick with the powershell script approach. How to Audit and Monitor BI Publisher Reports Access?

Do you know who is accessing to which report at what time at your reporting environment ? As you delivered the BI Publisher reports to the production environment and your users start using them as part of their daily business operations you might wonder such questions. With compliance becoming an integral part of any business requirement, auditing your reporting environment is also becoming one of the most critical and hot agenda in today’s enterprise reporting deployments. Also, I believe that auditing the reporting environment is not just for the compliance, but also the way to understand how your users are using the reports and be able to improve the user reporting experience. BI Publisher have introduced Enterprise Level Auditing feature with its 11G release, with an integration of Oracle Fusion Middleware Audit Framework, which comes out of the box with the installation. Yes, this is another great example of the benefit of its tight integration with Fusion Middleware introduced with BI Publisher 11g release. What Information Can I Know about our Reporting Environment? With this new Auditing feature you can now gain the following insights. When a particular user login or logout What report is accessed by who and when and how How long does it take to process a particular report Yes, it’s all there. This is a great news for 10G users, right ? I used to be one of them working with many different IT organizations and were craving for this, but it’s here now with 11G! How Can I Access to the Auditing Information? With the Fusion Middleware Auditing Framework, BI Publisher feed such information either to a log file or to a database. If you decided to get the data into the database then, of course you know, you can use BI Publisher to report and publish, or visualize the data to gain more insights. One thing though, in order to feed the data it requires a few extra steps, which I’ll cover it later. Regardless of whether it’s the log file or the database to store the Auditing data, first, you need to enable the Auditing feature, which is not enabled as default. So, let’s take a look at how to enable it. How to Enable Auditing Feature? Here is a quick list of the steps: Enable Auditing related properties in BI Publisher configuration file Copy component_events.xml file to Fusion Middleware Audit Framework’s location Enable Auditing Policy with Fusion Middleware Control (Enterprise Manager) Restart WebLogic Server Enable Auditing related properties in BI Publisher configuration file Open xmlp-server-config.xml file, which is located under $BI_HOME/ user_projects/domains/bifoundation_domain/config/bipublisher/repository/Admin/Configuration directory. Set the following three properties values to ‘true’. AUDIT_ENABLED MONITORING_ENABLED AUDIT_JPS_INTEGRATION The ‘AUDIT_JPS_INTEGRATION’ is not in the file as default, so you need to add this. Go to the following directory. $BI_HOME /oracle_common/modules/oracle.iau_11.1.1/components 2. Create a directory called ‘xmlpserver’ 3. Copy component_events.xml file from /user_projects/domains/bifoundation_domain/config/bipublisher/repository/Admin/Audit To the newly created ‘xmlpserver’ directory. Enable Auditing Policy with Fusion Middleware Control (EM) Now you can set a level of the auditing for each BI Publisher’s auditing type by using Fusion Middleware Control (a.k.a. Enterprise Manager). 1. Login to Fusion Middleware Control UI http://hostname:port/em (e.g. reporting.oracle.com:7001/em) 2. Access to Audit Policy configuration UI from the menu Under WebLogic Domain, right-click bifoundation_domain, select Security and then click Audit Policy. 3. Set Audit Level for BI Publisher. While you can select ‘Custom’ to set a customized level of Auditing for each component, I’m selecting ‘Medium’ for this exercise. Restart WebLogic Server After all the above settings, now you need to restart the WebLogic Server instance in order to take those changes in effect. If you’re on Windows you can simply do this by selecting ‘Stop BI Servers’ and ‘Start BI Servers’ from the Start menu. If you’re on Linux then you can run ‘stopWebLogic.sh’ and ‘startWebLogic.sh’, which can be found under $BI_HOME/user_projects/domains/bifoundation_domain/bin Start Auditing! Yes, every login and log out will be recorded, and every report access will be recorded in this log file. Now, looking at this text file to understand what’s going on is pretty overwhelming. And accessing to this log file, which is located at the server’s file system where the BI Publisher/WebLogic Server are running, is another challenge in typical deployment scenarios. And that’s where the database storage option for the Auditing data comes into a picture. I’ll talk about this tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Integrating Twitter Into An ASP.NET Website

Twitter is a popular social networking web service for writing and sharing short messages. These tidy text messages are referred to as tweets and are limited to 140 characters. Users can leave tweets and follow other users directly from Twitter's website or by using the Twitter API. Twitter's API makes it possible to integrate Twitter with external applications. For example, you can use the Twitter API to display your latest tweets on your blog. A mom and pop online store could integrate Twitter such that a new tweet was added each time a customer completed an order. And ELMAH, a popular open-source error logging library, can be configured to send error notifications to Twitter. Twitter's API is implemented over HTTP using the design principles of Representational State Transfer (REST). In a nutshell, inter-operating with the Twitter API involves a client - your application - sending an XML-formatted message over HTTP to the server - Twitter's website. The server responds with an XML-formatted message that contains status information and data. MMO Data Persistence Question

I wanted to ask a question regarding data persistence strategies for an MMO. I have some experience in the games industry with social synchronous games. At Zynga, we stored static proto data in XML on both the client and the server and stored instance/runtime data in membase. For clarity sake, proto data for a Potion would be PotionName or MaxCharges, while runtime/instance data would be something like ChargesRemaining. So basically, if a player picks up a potion the instance is (via prediction) created from XML data on the client, the request gets sent to the server where the instance is created from XML and then added to membase. Is the same strategy that would be used for soemthing like an MMO? Would it be feasible to have static proto data in some kind of in-memory no-sql database on both client and server with instance data being stored on the server in a more enterprise level database? Or should all data (proto/instance) be stored on the server and the client gets everything from server? I know a lot of this might on certain game requirements, however, i'm basically looking for some general opinion/best practices here if there are any.

PowerShell to fetch a SQL Execution Plan

With PowerShell becoming the scripting language of choice for many people, I’ve occasionally wondered about using it to analyse execution plans. After all, an execution plan is just XML, and PowerShell is just one tool which will very easily handle xml. The thing is – there’s no Get-SqlPlan cmdlet available, which has frustrated me in the past. Today I figured I’d make one. I know that I can write T-SQL to get an execution plan using SET SHOWPLAN_XML ON, but the problem is that this must be the only statement in a batch. So I used go, and a couple of newlines, and whipped up the following one-liner: function Get-SqlPlan([string] $query, [string] $server, [string] $db) { return ([xml] (invoke-sqlcmd -Server $server -Database $db -Query "set showplan_xml on;`ngo`n$query").Item( 0)) } (but please bear in mind that I have the SQL Snapins installed, which provides invoke-sqlcmd) To use this, I just do something like: $plan = get-sqlplan "select name from Production.Product" "." "AdventureWorks" And then find myself with an easy way to navigate through an execution plan! At some point I should make the function more robust, but this should be a good starter for any SQL PowerShell enthusiasts (like Aaron Nelson) out there.

Graphing services using pnp4nagios

Hi! I've managed to install pnp4nagios 0.6.3 and I'm a bit confused about how pnp4nagios generates graphics. Almost out of the box, it started graphs for ping and some http servers (not all of them). But, how can I make it graph things like disk utilization (When that value comes from SNMP)?? For example, ls /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata/isis/ Cola_de_Mail.rrd Cola_de_Mail.xml HTTP.rrd HTTP.xml PING.rrd PING.xml Those are checks running on the host isis, but there are many other checks for that server that are not taken into account by pnp4nagios. How can I make pnp4nagios "see" the other checks?? Thanks!

Share an ATI Catalyst Profile across several/all users

We've set up some hotkeys in the ATI Catalyst Control Panel on a communal machine, and we're trying to share this among a number of users, possibly all users. The profile is stored as MyProfile.xml in the Local Settings tree; the profile can be loaded through a shortcut, but unfortunately the Profilename switch simply expects the name of the profile rather than the path to the XML file. And while we can copy the profile to appropriate folders under other users accounts, the mere presence of the XML isn't enough to make the profile available to the user. A quick scan of the registry didn't reveal much, though I suspect there is something in there to be aware of. Any ideas on how we can share this profile?

Why can't PHP script write a file on server 2008 via command line or task scheduler?

I have a PHP script. It runs well when I use a browser. It writes an XML file in the same directory. The script takes ~60 seconds to run, and the resulting XML file is ~16 MB. I am running PHP 5.2.13 via FastCGI on Server 2008 64 bit. I created a task in task scheduler to run c:\php5\php.exe "D:\inetpub\tools\something.php" No error returned, but no file created. If I run this same path and argument at a command line it does not error and does not create the file. I am doing a simple fopen fwrite fclose to save the contents of a php variable to a .xml file, and the file only gets created when the script is run through the browser. Thanks

The service bus console allows you to view the content that you reported. To report data you simply use the Report action in your proxy. The action itself is rather straightforward. You specify the content to report ($body for example), an optional key for easier search (for example the id of the record) and that's it. Sometimes though, what you want to is a bit more complicated. I recently had a case where the key was built from the message type (XML) and the id of the message. Seems quite simple but the id could be any element anywhere in the message depending on its type. This could be handled by 'if' statement but adding new cases would mean changing the proxy service and if you have lots of message types this can get boring so I wanted the solution to be as dynamic as possible (read "just change a configuration file and that's it"). The following entry details how you can make this dynamic in your proxy by using XQuery/XSLT. First step the XQuery We're going to use an XQuery to make the mapping between the XML message type and the location of the identifier in it. We assume here that the message type is the first node of the input XML and use a rather simple Xpath to find the identifier. The XQuery looks like this for two messages : <reportmapping> <row> <logical>messageType1</logical> <type>MT1</type> <reportingreferencelocation>//customID</reportingreferencelocation> </row> <row> <logical>messageType2</logical> <type>MT2</type> <reportingreferencelocation>//theOtherIDLocation</reportingreferencelocation> </row> </reportmapping> Second step the XSLT To get the identifier value of the dynamic path, we're going to use an XSLT transformation. This XSLT takes an XML parameter as input which contains our xpath (coming from the previous XQuery). The XSLT looks like this : <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:xalan="http://xml.apache.org/xalan"> <xsl:param name="PathToNode"/> <xsl:template match="/"> <IDVALUE> <xsl:value-of select="xalan:evaluate($PathToNode/reportingreferencelocation)"/> </ IDVALUE > </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> (note the use of a xalan function here. Xalan is the XSLT processor used in weblogic server) Last step, the proxy service We're now going to wire everything in the proxy service. First we assign the XQuery to a variable. We then get the entry in the XQuery corresponding to the record we're treating. We're then extracting the id of the message using the XSLT transformation Final assign is to built the final variable that will be used as the reporting key. The report action is then called with this variable. Everything is setup. We're now ready to test. Testing the solution Using the test console, we're sending our first XML ... <messageType1> <sender>test console 1</sender> <customID>ID12345</customID > <content> <field1>value of field 1</field1> </content> </messageType1> ... and a second one of another supported type <messageType2> <header> <theOtherIDLocation >ID67890</theOtherIDLocation > </header> <body> <data>Test data</data> </body> </messageType2> Reporting result is : Conclusion Report is done as expected.
