  I'm having problems converting a binary rooted tree to newick format. The full explanation for such a format can be found: http://code.google.com/p/mrsrf/wiki/NewickTree An example of a newick format would be as follows: for a tree T such as http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~cs251/OldCourses/1997/topic8/images/completetreetwo.gif the newick representation would be: (((8,9),(10,11)),((12,13),(14,15))) the internal node will become the commas while the leaves will be retained. such trees have internal nodes which will always have 2 children. I have a problem using recursion to come out with this newick format. The output contains far too many nodes and braces.   I'm currently working on an implementation of the following idea, and I was wondering if there is any literature on this subject. Working with Java, but the principle applies on any language with a decent type-system, I like to implement: matching Objects from a List using a RegularExpression-esque search: So let's say I have a List containing List<Object> x = new ArrayList<Object>(); x.add(new Object()); x.add("Hello World"); x.add("Second String"); x.add(5); // Integer (auto-boxing) x.add(6); // Integer Then I create a "Regular Expression" (not working with a stream of characters, but working with a stream of Objects), and instead of character-classes, I use type-system properties: [String][Integer] And this would match one sublist: {Match["Second String", 5]}. The expression: [String:length()<15] Will match two sublist (each of length 1) containing a String which instance is passing the expression instance.length() < 5: {Match["Hello World"],Match["Second String"]}. [Object][Object] Matches any pair in the List: {Match[Object,"Hello World"],Match["Second String", 5]}, in a streamed manner (no overlapping matches). Ofcourse, my implementation will have grouping, lookahead/lookbehinds and is hierarchical (i.e. matching n elements from Lists in Lists), etc. The above merely illustrates the concept. Is there a name for this principle, and is there literature available on it?

• VBA compare and sort strings with quirky characters

  I am comparing text values from two DAO recordsets in MS Access. I sort on the text field, then go through both recordsets comparing the values from each. The sets are substantially different and while they're mostly alpha-numeric, spaces and symbols like hyphens and periods are very common. My program depends on predictable sorting and fool-proof comparing. But unfortunately, the sort will rank two values differently than the comparison function. StrComp is the obvious first choice: varResult = StrComp(Val_1, Val_2) RFA-300 14.9044 RFA300 14-2044 But for the two pairs above, StrComp returns a different value than one would expect based on the sort. Including vbTextCompare or vbBinaryCompare affects StrComp's result, but not so as to solve the problem. Note the values must always be compared as strings. Of course I make sure that "14-2044" and "14.9044" aren't evaluated as -2030 and ~15. That's not the cause of my problem. I learned API-based functions are more reliable for quirky texts, so I tried these: varResult = CompareString(LOCALE_SYSTEM_DEFAULT, _ SORT_STRINGSORT, strVal_2, -1, strVal_1, -1) varResult = CompareString(LOCALE_SYSTEM_DEFAULT, _ NORM_IGNOREWIDTH, strVal_2, -1, strVal_1, -1) The first one returns the opposite of StrComp. The second one returns the same as StrComp. But neither yields a result that is consistent with the sort order. (NORM_IGNOREWIDTH is probably not relevant, but I needed a place-holder substitute and it looked as good as any.) UPDATE: This is a complete rewrite of the original post, deleting all the info about why I really need this -- just take my word for it and enjoy the brevity.

• Merging datasets with 2 different time variables in SAS

  Hye Guys, for those regularly browsing this site sorry for already another question (however I did solve my last question myself!) I have another problem with merging datasets, it seems that accounting for time in datasets is a real pain in the ass. I succesfully managed to merge on months in my previous datasets, however it seems I have a final dataset which only has quarter as a time count variable. So where all my normal databases have month 1- xxx as an indicator of time, this database had quarter as an indicator of time. I still want to add the variables of this last database, let's call it TVOL, into my WORK database. Quick summary QUARTER: Quarter 0 = JAN1996-MAR1996 Month: Month 0 = JAN1996 Example: TVOL TVOL _ Ticker ____ Quarter 1500 _ AA ________ -1 52546 _ BB ________ 15 Example: WORK BETA _ Ticker ____ Month 1.52 _ AA ________ 2 1.54__ BB _______ 3 Example: Merged: BETA ______ TVOL __ Ticker ____ Month 1.52 _______ 500 ___ AA _______ 2 I now want to merge this 2 tables using following relationship if the month is in quarter 1, the data of quarter 0 has to be used, so if i have an observation i nWORK with date 2FEB1996 the TVOL of quarter -1 has to be put behind this observation. Something like IF month = quarter i use data quarter i-1. Also, as TVOL is measured quarterly and I have to put in monthly I have to take the average, so (TVOL/3) should be added as a variable.   I'm using a custom tableview cell (like Tweetie's fast scrolling) i've added a gradient to the context, which looks really nice, but when I select the cell, the gradient is still visible.   I'm trying to make a UITableView that shows a blog post and comments for that post. My setup is a tableview in storyboard with two dynamic prototype cells. The first cell is for the post and should never change. The second cell represents the 0 to N comments.   Hi Geeks, We are having serious MySQL(InnoDB) performance issues at a moment when we do: (10-20) insertions on TABLE1 (10-20) updates on TABLE2 Note: Both above operations happens within fraction of a second. And this occurs every few (10-15) minutes. And all online users (approx 400-600) doing read operation on join of TABLE1 & TABLE2 every 1 second. • SQL Server 2000 intermittent connection exceptions on production server - specific environment probl

  We've been having intermittent problems causing users to be forcibly logged out of out application. Our set-up is ASP.Net/C# web application on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with SQL Server 2000 on the back end. We've recently performed a major product upgrade on our client's VMWare server (we have a guest instance dedicated to us) and whereas we had none of these issues with the previous release the added complexity that the new upgrade brings to the product has caused a lot of issues. We are also running SQL Server 2000 (build 8.00.2039, or SP4) and the IIS/ASP.NET (.Net v2.0.50727) application on the same box and connecting to each other via a TCP/IP connection. Primarily, the exceptions being thrown are: System.IndexOutOfRangeException: Cannot find table 0. System.ArgumentException: Column 'password' does not belong to table Table. [This exception occurs in the log in script, even though there is clearly a password column available] System.InvalidOperationException: There is already an open DataReader associated with this Command which must be closed first. [This one is occurring very regularly] System.InvalidOperationException: This SqlTransaction has completed; it is no longer usable. System.ApplicationException: ExecuteReader requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is connecting. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. And just today, for the first time: System.Web.UI.ViewStateException: Invalid viewstate. We have load tested the app using the same number of concurrent users as the production server and cannot reproduce these errors. They are very intermittent and occur even when there are only 8/9/10 user connections. My gut is telling me its ASP.NET - SQL Server 2000 connection issues.. We've pretty much ruled out code-level Data Access Layer errors at this stage (we've a development team of 15 experienced developers working on this) so we think its a specific production server environment issue.

• With Go, how to append unknown number of byte into a vector and get a slice of bytes?

  I'm trying to encode a large number to a list of bytes(uint8 in Go). The number of bytes is unknown, so I'd like to use vector. But Go doesn't provide vector of byte, what can I do? And is it possible to get a slice of such a byte vector? I intends to implement data compression. Instead of store small and large number with the same number of bytes, I'm implements a variable bytes that uses less bytes with small number and more bytes with large number. • iPhone OS: Why is my managedModelObject not complying with Key Value Coding?

  Ok so I'm trying to build this stat tracker for my app and I have built a data model object called statTracker that keeps track of all the stuff I want it to.   I need to get a total count of JPG files within a specified directory, including ALL it's subdirectories. No sub-sub directories. Structure looks like this : dir1/ 2 files subdir 1/ 8 files total dir1 = 10 files dir2/ 5 files subdir 1/ 2 files subdir 2/ 8 files total dir2 = 15 files I have this function, which doesn't work fine as it only counts files in the last subdirectory, and total is 2x more than the actual amount of files. • Why can I query with an int but not a string here? PHP MySQL Datatypes

  I am working on an Asset Database problem. I receive $id from $_GET["id"]; I then query the database and display the results. This works if my id is an integer like "93650" but if it has other characters like "wci1001", it displays this MySQL error: Unknown column 'text' in 'where clause' All fields in tables are of type: VARCHAR(50) What would I need to do to be able to use this query to search by id that includes other characters? • Google Maps API v3 - Different markers/labels on different zoom levels

  I was wondering if it is possible that Google has a feature to view different markers on different zoom levels. For example, on zoom level 1, I want one marker over China with the label saying "5". And as the user zooms in, lets say on zoom level 4, I want the previous marker and label to disappear. And I want to have 5 new markers/labels, each on a different city in China all saying "1". Thus China will say a number and all the cities in China will say numbers adding up to China's number. The key concept I am trying to figure out here is how to hide markers and labels based on zoom levels. A constraint for me is that I am living in China currently where google is censored, so a lot of online documents are censored for me, including many of google's documentations. I am trying to query a database to find the following If a customer searches for a hotel in a city between dates A and B, find and return the hotels in which rooms are free between the two dates. There will be more than one room in each room type(i.e. 5 Rooms in type A, 10 rooms in Type B etc) and we have to query the db to find only those hotels in which there is atleast one room free in atleast one type. • After drawing circles on C# form how can i know on what circle i clicked?

  I have to represent graphically an oriented graph like in the image below. i have a C# form, when i click with the mouse on it i have to draw a node. If i click somewhere on the form where is not already a node drawn it means i cliked with the intetion of drawing a node, if it is a node there i must select it and memorize it.
